  1. 100's if not 1000's of people die every year *accidentally* from CO poisoning from either car exhaust or charcoal burners being used inside an unventilated or poorly ventilated room every year. I asterisked the word 'accidentally' because particularly from charcoal burners there is no odour, discomfort, pain or any indication of what is going on so that is an option.

  2. Finally got a least a good temporary ground installed. No shocks, no weird noises from my guitar amp anymore. Less than 1 volt diff between earth and neutral now. I have an "electrician" - don't know yet if he deserves the title, coming up soon to run a proper new ground and give an opinion/explanation on those white wires going to the ground bus.  I'm not inclined to move them just to see what happens. ????

Measuring the voltage between L and E is just a simple (for me) way to determine relative quality of ground.  IE: if voltage is pretty much the same between L-E and L-N, then you likely have a decent ground.  if voltage between L-E is same as N-E then your ground is not good.  Of course a stake in the ground will give you what it should be.

I'm not comfortable messing around in the panel with power on.

Since you are in a house take a walk and look at your power poles, a supply with MEN will have a ground wire from the neutral (usually the top wire of the ones on small insulators), if you are definitely MEN then a N-E link is a good idea.

Can you post a photo of your distribution board with the lid off (care) so we can see what's going on in there too.

    What is MEN?

Is that ground actually connected to the ground at the box and then the rod? A LOT of extension leads hve 3-pin plugs and outlets with 2 core cable!

OK. I will do my own ground. I actually started to do that but backed off because of the other opinion.  I'm familiar with the ungrounded 3 pin extensions in Thailand. ????

Is your ground really good? (how do you know)

Try measuring to a known-good ground (big screwdriver in the lawn), a floating ground would give you something like you are seeing.

Are you in a house or a condo??

I wouldn't go around connecting N-E unless you KNOW that you have a TNC-S supply with MEN.

House, and I can drive in a good ground rod and try that. Thanks.

The voltage between N and E is a concern but you are not likely getting a shock from the neutral.

What is the voltage between L and E?

Is your guitar/amp connected to ground?  (3-pin plug)

I would not bond the N and E bus without more information of your grid supply.

Unless things have changed recently, US boxes have separate N and E bars which are bonded.

Hi. Thanks. The amp is grounded. I don't know about the voltage between Line and ground - and won't measure myself because I don't know what I am doing! But will try and find out.

  8. Hello,

I hope everyone is well. I'm getting mild and sometimes not so mild shocks playing electric guitar if i am grounded. None if not. I'm repeating here what a friend has told me is the probable cause and solution. He says there is a good ground but there is a 75 volt difference at the mains between ground and neutral. When he checked each circuit it sometimes went down to to 45 volt. He suggests running a wire between the ground and neutral bus as he has done himself in Thailand (in the USA they would be on the same bus) but with only a few volt differential and is hesitant with such a large one. He also thinks this is the reason I have to set my Safe-T-cut GFI to lowest sensitivity.

What do you guys think about both the diagnosis and suggested solution?

  9. Hi Tum,

I think you made a good start - maybe hang out a bit here and other sites and be available for advice if anyone asks for it.

One thing I can tell you really pisses off this farang here, including my interaction with a very pleasant guy that I normally buy strings from online. I know Thais don't like to say 'no' but it's real irritating to me when I ask if something small, like a certain pick or something is available, and never get a response.

Happens all the time - not just with strings - and makes me not want to shop there again. How hard is it to email back "Sorry, I can't get that."? I'm sure if I asked for 50 sets of strings that he didn't have, I get an answer with alternatives or something. Don't make the same mistake. wink.png

  10. I'm not sure I understand the details here, but if the family you want to help is a 30 yo mother with young kids, then you might look at what I did in a vaguely similar situation. I bought a house (but I only had 2 million and also needed a place to live) and put it in a kid's name. At least neither she nor mom can sell it without a court order until the child is 20. You could do the same with rental units.

An alternative, but I'm not sure about a usufruct for a minor, - perhaps someone else can clear that up - If it can be done, then put it in mom's name with usufructs for the kids. Usufruct entities a person to occupy the land for a period of time, which can be their lifetime. That will also prevent her from selling it without the children's permission (until all of them reach adulthood) without a court order, and that would be near impossible to get. And when the kids get to be adults they would all have to agree to the sale. Neither is perfect, but one thing is both are very doable and while not simple, probably simpler, than a lot of the alternatives, and involve little expense other than the purchase and/or construction of the land and units.

BTW, I saw a comment here "never buy land in Thailand" which is an absurd generality, IMO.

You cannot plan the rest of their lives though. Nothing will prevent them indefinitely from doing something foolish or getting cheated so you just have to trust in God, fate, karma or whatever you believe in and not torment yourself with that. Life goes on - people adjust and things generally work out better than we fear. Just do what you can do and be at peace with it.

  11. I've got strings etc from this guy before in Bangkok, he does most of his stuff by mail. 50 Baht p&p if I remember correctly...

    http://www.acousticshops.com/store/

Looks like this is the same guy that owns http://www.stringthai.com/ and I think one other string site as well.

Interesting. Competing against yourself like that, especially if there is minimal overhead, can be profitable. Someone checks 2/3 sites and figures they got a good picture of the whole market, or gets pissed with one, tries the second one. But the acousticshops site does have a lot more than just strings.
