I second the place in Ratchada, good dentists at a fair (not cheapest in BKK) price.

I've only been in Thailand for 22 years, not 35. And in fact, I did get a case of the G.I.Blues... ONCE... after eating at a very exclusive hotel restaurant in Bangkok. It lasted almost 4 hours, taken care of with two Imodium tablets. Four hours out of my 22-year existence in LOS, eating street foods often, everywhere I go. Even eating sausages of varying types often. Street foods and their vendors are an integral part of Thai Culture, and to avoid them is doing oneself an injustice. One only needs to be a bit observant and street-smart when choosing which vendor with whom to give your custom.
Funnily enough the only time I've been really sick in LOS was after a meal at the Shangri La hotel in Silom....

For 80 baht, not for 100. In our city is not one who sells them for 80.
I said to one I'll call the cops, they don't seem to worry. Great job Pinocchio, it worked for two weeks. Or was it ten days?
100 baht is just for ‘lucky’ tickets in BKK they will sell you unlucky numbers for 80..... -
Got lucky and managed to get gf a ticket despite having to register for a login on the day.
27th was full but there was a space on the 20th. She’s already had many desperate messages on fb from fellow Thais asking to swap her ticket (sick relatives... and buffalos etc etc)They really should put on more of these flights, there is clearly plenty of demand and they could even charge a bit more I think.
Anyone know what happens next in terms of making payment to Thai? Should they be in contact soon or nearer the time?

She should register now for the a flight. She might get on one of the flights in September since Thai's get the seats first.
Info is here in Thai: http://www.thaiembassy.org/london/th/thai-people/10479/119895-**การลงทะเบียนเพื่อจองเที่ยวบินพิเศษกลับประเทศไทยใ.html
Thank you!

Does anyone have any idea what the current waiting list time is like in the U.K. for repatriation flights back to Thailand?
I guess to put it another way, what are the chances of getting a spot on one of the 3 flights for Sept when the window opens on Monday?
This is for a Thai National (gf)

I always leave my water bottle on a partially hidden ledge when I run in lumpini. It got nicked once but apart from that nothing bad has happened. I’d do the same if doing laps in the park in London.
Incidents like this story are very rare if it’s even true!

I dated the receptionist of that D&D hotel in the picture for a while.
Real goer of a girl called Ayay and loved being played with in public (unusual for Thai in my experience).
We’d sit at the bar inside at the big Irish pub on Khao San where Thais go and she’d push my fingers up her skirt!
Sadly it transpired she had an Aussie bf in Sydney and she went over there to be with him.

That's a one dimensional view. For every existing business that cannot start up once again there will be new businesses getting ready to launch and cash buyers looking to buy existing businesses that are in distress. You seem to imagine the cycle only includes existing business and business owners, it doesn't, it also includes necommers, new capital, acquisitions, mergers, opportunists and others.
In an economic depression such as the one the world is currently facing the number of businesses closing is significantly higher than those new ones opening. (I don’t know the number for Thailand but in 2009 in the U.K. the net number of businesses closing was 125,000)
This is a much bigger economic crash than 2009 and the pain for the millions of over indebted Thais who have leveraged themselves to the hilt with mortgages, cars, credit cards etc will be severe when unemployment inevitably starts to rise.

"Guys from Ireland are hard." Don't confuse guys from Northern Ireland with guys from the Republic of Ireland. Two different countries entirely.
Not really let’s be honest.
Half of the people who live in Northern Ireland believe themselves to be Irish not British.
One day maybe it will be united again as a single country.- 1

Many of the working girls take it, gogo girls included.
I often joke with them and say ‘you take ya ba tonight?’ Most of the time they will say ‘a little bit’
It’s a massive problem in this country and it’s mostly a Thai lower class issue not Farang induced.
I don’t go near it personally! I saw a documentary that showed ex yaba addicts in a mental hospital in Thailand and it was harrowing beyond belief. They had truly lost their minds.

Great to hear. The short formats of the game are as exciting and fun to watch as any other sport. The only hurdle to playing cricket is the need for a proper pitch and to maintain it plus all the equipment, not cheap.
Btw, the BBC article linked says "batter" and I thought what the 'ell BBC mixing up cricket and baseball? Then I realized batsman may not work in this case:-) But what's wrong with batswoman?
ha! Bbc seem to use it across their woman’s cricket coverage. Agreed batter doesn’t sound right and batswoman would make more sense. Bbc are on this whole politically correct gone mad tip at the moment though in terms of LGBT/pronouns etc

Currently playing in the World Cup and really doing Thailand proud with their attitude and some excellent fielding.
I’m the first to Thai bash on many things but this is quite an amazing achievement and shows a clever piece of Thai administration for once.

Interesting. Not sure I want anything locked up at the moment though as getting pretty bearish on the world economy!

You could say the same about any investment that doesn't throw off income or a dividend. Gold, art, Bitcoin, Beanie Babies or a thousand others. At the end of the day, the ROI comes from appreciation in value, minus any expenses incurred in buying, holding, and selling. The other benefit of real estate is that you're generally leveraging your cash by taking out a mortgage. You may have 10% cash tied up, but you're getting the benefit of appreciation on 100% of the value.
Thanks for the lesson, I'm a CFA charter holder so I also understand finance a little bit ????
I wouldn't put bangkok condos in the same asset class as gold or even art though. Gold is highly liquid and even art is fairly liquid if it's a high quality piece.
BKK condos are highly illiquid and have no visible secondary market / secondary pricing. As many others have stated it's not in the Thai mentality to lower the price of any asset to make a sale so the only time these condos will start transacting is when the banks take the keys off the defaulted owners and flog them at any price to get them off their balance sheet. (we are not at this point yet but if you look at how this virus is affecting the global supply chain / world tourism then it's easier to be quite bearish on the thai economy)

And given the Thai disdain for buying used stuff and the risks inherent in being a landlord, it makes sense to buy it, make sure it's secure, and sit on it vacant until it's time to cash out.
It may have sounded like nonsense to you, but one thing I found in 20+ years of living in Asia is that my paradigm may work well back home, but it doesn't work well in a very different culture.
I'd also add that, just because the Chinese aren't able to travel to Thailand, doesn't mean they aren't investing in Thai real estate.
Sorry I don’t understand. Why is it a good investment vs a 1% Paying bank account.
They don’t have a tenant so there isn’t a yield and let’s be honest the chance of getting a positive absolute cash return on any sale (if they can find a mug to buy it) is looking fairly limited.
Plus they have to pay ongoing service charge and condo blocks in Bangkok deteriorate quickly due to their poor build quality.
So overall if this was an NPV decision I’d take the 1% paying bank account every time.
If you are long the bkk condo market I hope you have your lucky amulets on!!

Way overbuilt and way overpriced. ghost towers.
Yeah this is exactly what I always think about Bangkok condos. Why are there so few lights on at say 9pm on a Monday night.
Many are apparently bought by hiso Thai as investments and they never rent out I believe for some superstitious reason (some Thai explained it to me one time but sounded like nonsense)Unless the economy seriously crashes and people start defaulting on their loans then I guess we won’t know the true ‘market price’ of these shoeboxes.
For now it’s surely a case of catching a falling knife and best avoided.

Must have been on a suicide mission to ride a road bike in thailand.
It doesn’t feel particularly safe riding around London most of the time but riding alongside drunk somchai who suffers from micro sleeps in his speeding pick up is not a great idea for anyone who wants to live longer than a few weeks.

Agreed, there are no good hiphop/rap/r&b clubs. There's only two I used to know of a few years ago. I remember RCA in the past always had some sheett foreign DJ's who can't play any decent hiphop song in full and end up mixing it into a new song after playing a it for like 10 seconds or has a terrible remix of a song. The only other option was Sugar which had something ridiculous like a 500 baht entry for some small crappy club. If someone opened up some good hiphop clubs in BKK I'm sure they could rake in the dosh.
It's equally bad if you like underground house/techno like I do.
There are 20+ better lineups in London every weekend than the best thing Bangkok usually has on. Glow/Beam occasionally have some good DJs but it's often half empty even for decent headliners.

For a city of its size Bangkok doesn't have a very innovative nightclub scene sadly.
If you want to buy a bottle with some mates (not too expensive), listen to EDM and be surrounded by hot freelancers then Insanity on Soi11 is usually a good bet (it's open the latest in the area)
If you like more underground house and hip hop then I recommend Beam in Thong Lor (soi 55 I think). This place attracts hiso thais and foreign expats.
This isn't a place to pick up freelancers. Drinks aren't cheap.

Cost of living for a single person in Bangkok?
in Bangkok

Agree with this. 30-40k a month is a peasant lifestyle in bkk and leaves no room for unexpected expenses. (I know a few TEFL teachers on this and I wouldn't want their lifestyle)
80-100k allows for the occasional trip home, some local holidays in the region and decent health insurance. It doesn't give a hugely luxurious lifestyle but comfortable without penny pinching every day.
