  1. We considered a visit to Samui.  However, when we did our research and included other islands on our list of possible destinations we found, Samui is much more expensive.  I know there is talk of 'savings' for locals and expats but, its is still expensive. Some of the high end places can attract people like us if they lower they rates.  The rooms are empty.  Why not charge 2000 a night instead of 10,000?  The only true costs are housecleaning and time.  The owners /managers are on site anyway.  You can change your food service options. Include breakfast.  Which, is also cheap.  There are so many possible opportunities.  We would pay for a massage if the rooms were cheaper.  We are going to Koh Yao Yai first because, the 4-5 star properties there include some which are 3000 or less a night.

  2. You should ask the Thai immigration folks.  I wouldn't go now.  Unless you are willing to stay there for awhile.  Maybe ask the Canadian embassy too?  They will re-open. But, you need a special insurance which is on top of the amount needed to get the original Non-O Visa.  The coverage amount was raised.  Also, you need a Covid clearance...within 72 hours or, something like that.  You really need to check with immigration.  And, if you want to come back...don't go anywhere now.

  3. Seems to me, you should also be looking at Taiwan or another country for treatment.  Nobody can enter Thailand unless they are Thai.  And, I imagine a banishment will not be overlooked. Drugs are taken very seriously here.  There is no legal 'right' to enter a country where you are not a citizen.  Do look at other countries.  Maybe Singapore too?  Malaysia has okay health care.  I would look at Taiwan, Singapore and Malaysia.

  4. This happened to me, as well.  I have been waiting over a month for a package that was at the check points wherever...in lazada space they were.  Then I got a refund and note that said they tried to deliver but, were unable to deliver.  Which is nonsense.  I have received many packages here at my condo.  There are always people at the reception area who collect deliveries.  This is nothing new to them.  Lazada lied.  I will have to seriously think about using them again.  Can we use Alibaba?  Or, maybe I will go directly through the purveyor.

  5. I need to vent a bit.  I would have made it comfortably in my current state and I still will. But, a glass of wine would have been nice at night or, a scotch.  I am pretty upset with all of the fools who continued to congregate in groups, have parties behind closed doors or, even on decks and beaches when the government told us not too.  This I believe, is the reason the rest of us are not allowed to purchase alcohol.  Because, a few persons believe it, is their 'right' to not wear a mask and to congregate with large groups of persons and party, the rest of us are not going to experience any easing of restrictions in Thailand.

I fully support the government arresting these people and putting them in jail.  Their choices are taking away, our choices.  We played by the rules. Now, we continue to play by the rules.  We should all remind our friends partying friends, they are to blame for the alcohol ban.  And, partially to blame for the extended restrictions. If you don't think they can extend this ban on alcohol and continue the other restrictions in June ,  you must be living on Mars.   In many ways, it is good that the government is choosing safety over the economy in this circumstance. I appreciate it as, they need time to create rules and regulations for businesses to open.   Its not easy I am sure.  A lot of venders, airlines, hotels, taxi drivers, tuk tuk drivers, boat employees, museum workers, monks,  nail salons, hair stylists, clothing manufacturers, retail sales people, restaurant staff et al are not going to get a paycheck for another month.  One of the reasons is, the refusal of some of us to follow the rules regarding social distancing.   As for the booze, the government is losing a lot of money here too.  They make a lot of money on alcohol sales.  A LOT.  At a time like this they too, need income to support the citizens.   And, they are giving this up.  Restaurants cannot deliver it.  Stores cannot sell it.  Wholesalers and wine sellers cannot import or sell it.  This is a lot of persons directly affected by just this. And, it IS directly associated with the fact, that some persons don't think about how their actions affect others or,  sadly, they don't care.  I hope we can stop these persons who continue to congregate against the government directive.

  6. I don't have any data to accurately know if the alcohol ban helped.  I hypothesize, it helped some during Songkran.  Less drinking means less togetherness.  I imagine the curfew has been helpful.  It keeps people off the roads (less accidents.) without drinking, there are less drunk driving accidents.  This is a good thing. People can't up and drive to their friends because, of the curfew.   Maybe we need to extend the curfew but, let us drink?  I still see people waiting in lines at immigration or, for food. So social distancing is still an issue.  I still read about the authorities breaking up parties.  I think the ban hopefully, kept some people home and away from their friends during the holiday.  And, that these persons realize that we have no right to buy alcohol.  And, because, of some foolish few the rest of us paid the price.

  7. Two years ago, when we were living in Ecuador we took a trip to LIma, Peru to shop.  Ecuador doesn't have the same abundant supply of spices, booze or cheese as, Peru does. So, we would take an empty suitcase on a trip to Lima now and then to get our fill.  One item I found was horseradish.  I have been carrying this around for 2 years I think.  When I looked at it yesterday, it appeared to have browned a bit. I opened it 'too easily' unfortunately.  I guess the seal had been broken. It smelled great but, it was bland.  In 2015 we lived in Chiang Mai.   I purchased a bottle of horseradish on a visit to Bangkok.  We eventually opened the Thailand purchased bottle in Ecuador in 2018.  That time the seal was still in tact. ???? As long as there is a good seal and lot of vinegar......a lot of things will still be usable longer than we can imagine lol

  8. I agree.  It's sad to see employees who can easily do their work from home, leaving their homes and interacting with other people while transiting to work, being in an office and returning home. I am also dismayed because, the people who cannot afford to lose their jobs are being forced to choose work over their health.  For example, people who are working in a 'snack food' warehouse who are told to come to factory, mingle with a large number of people to produce snack foods.  We have plenty of snack foods available to us in supermarkets, online and stored in warehouses.  It seems counterintuitive to ask people to meet in masses, work and then go home to their families after interacting with other people all day in a production facility.  These people need their paycheck. So, they are going to work.  We need to find a way to pay them and not require them to go to the production line now.  It's a community safety issue, its a nationwide issue and it is a universal, safety issue.

  9. I am not sure what we think about this.  I am certain, it would be very difficult to organize this kind of curfew. BUT, they do have it implemented in a number of countries. people go shopping based on the last numbers of their passport/ids and in panama, its based on that number and your gender for example.  We saw a bunch of young persons...teens/20's playing volleyball today when we were walking. None of these locals were wearing masks.  I. they are all touching the ball 2. they are falling on one another 3.  they are prespiring  4.  they scream and saliva travels and lingers in the air 5. they go home and eat maybe? do they bathe? do they wash their hands?  I don't know. But, it is situations like what we saw, that makes me think they need to be more strict.  Like everyone here, we want the fewest sick and the fewest casualties and we want it over as soon as possible.  Playing volleyball because, there is no work or school....not seeming like a good thing:(  I am not sure everyone understands how this disease is transmitted or, that ANYONE can get the disease.  I see Farangs without masks in elevators and accepting food from delivery.  I see locals doing this too:(  ugh
