  1. I guess two other things I'm wondering are:

    • If these are scam attempts, what kind of scam?
    • Has anyone else experienced situations like these? Especially by Westerners? Recruiting Westerners to approach other Westerners seems like a smart idea.

The first thing the con-artist does in convince the "mark" it's not a con, if they can establish the "mark" is corrupt in some way all the better then it becomes an apparent "joint-venture" and the "mark" is invested in the scam themselves - it's exactly how the 419 scams work - a dumb mark will spend $200 to justify in their mind that the $20 was not a con.

  2. All search engines are designed with greater skill and complexity that the average person is aware.

Search engines are built to sell advertising space and the harvesting of your profile data and subjects that interest you so to direct adverts at you.

You are in Thailand and searching in English, this sets up a few very obvious clues that you will get hotels, flights and porn as your main expected content adverts.

The results offered for a typical three keyword search will be focused depending if you are using a PC in Pattaya or New York, try: "Fresh Street Meat" for example.

  3. To get a bike go to shop/man on any street corner and give them money they give you the bike - it is as simple as that.

If you seek to legally own it you will need the Green Book which will show the owner's details along with the annual taxes paid. If buying an old bike which has unpaid annual taxes you MUST pay these back taxes before the bike will be registered in your name.

To get the Green Book you will need the usual copies of passport, letter from immigration proof of address etc etc. If buying from a shop they can often deal with the paperwork for you, do not believe any BS from a Thai helper that farang can not, it just means they are scamming you or don't understand the process - shop elsewhere.

To drive legally you will need to have the basic compulsory insurance.

If you have a brain you will take out an extra policy to cover theft and your medical repair bills for when you get knocked off in Bangkok traffic, but this is optional.

You can drive for three months using an International Driving Permit that is supported by a valid motorbike licence from your country, after three months you will need a Thai motorbike licence.

Wear a helmet but to be extra safe, leave the bike in the garage and take a taxi.

  4. When ever i see solar arrays installed without a well planned access to allow cleaning I KNOW that the system was sold to someone that means well but fails to understand what is involved.

Still the installers have their money for minimal work and have ensured a call-out service visit within a year to deal with the reduced power output.

If you are concerned about payback duration investigate heat-pumps and buried pipes, a pumped system driven by much smaller solar (PV) array would give a return in months rather than years.

  5. The internet is a tool to spread your net wider than your existing social circle and for those that lack confidence to establish first contact face to face from a standing start.

Certainly IMHO women like a certain amount of self-confidence in a man, so it would suggest that many that are using dating-sites purely to counter that aspect are on a back-foot already.

  6. Look at the history of EVERY such holiday location development.

The money is made in the building (cost cutting) and first sale.

The promised parking/landscaping/pools etc are never completed because the developers and skilled project managers already have your money and have moved on to the next project. The project is then run by "lesser" people that to make "they" pocket-money need to scalp the maintenance budget, so expect poor infrastructure on-going issues like Wireless internet, internal phone systems, central cooling/solar water heating/parking etc.

As they want 10-20% of your monthly rental income they are effectively forcing buyers to run the property as a rental business and take their "dip" without the hassle of dealing with wear and tear of the condo nor empty months.

Just look at the bigger picture to see how fast you should run from this development.

  7. The Kim Dictatorship era is coming to an end, probably within 5 years the people will cause a social revolution that the military will not be willing or able to quell, already the people have found that they have some control on state policy where the state has changed it's policy so as not to appear powerless in the face of grass-root rebellion.

If the leadership is smart they will stand at the helm and guide the country through the process, failure to understand the power of motivated people will result in the Ceaușescu Option: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nicolae_Ceau%C8%99escu#Death

  8. The tax should only apply to fat people.

Eating too many pizzas and burgers makes you fat.

Eating too many bowls of noodle soup makes you fat.

Eating too many chicken salad sandwiches makes you fat.

Eating too many ripe mangos with sweet sticky rice makes you fat.

Eating too many cakes with three sugars in your small cup of coffee makes you fat.

I think I spot a trend that does not focus on Western ideas of "fast food".

  9. I recall watching a programme about a long running family run lumber mill/furniture maker and the owners were proud that each generation was working timber that had been cut by the generation before them and not the trees that they themselves cut, that was just raw material for their children.

  10. You mention your first dog was a Soi-Dog so will know about pack structure and pecking order. If you introduce a new dog vs a new puppy you would be wise if you consider exactly the process of introduction of the two dogs. I think I've written a long post on this subject before, so searching will help.

In brief, the dogs must be introduced to each other on ground that is not "owned" by either, neither dog should be stressed nor needing a walk at the time (ie bladder/bowels empted) - high value treats grilled bacon/roast chicken pieces be in good supply so that the encounter has a positive associations.

Your home will smell of the incumbent dog and so be "home ground", the new dog will need to be submissive to the incumbent top dog although being the new dog you/wife may seek to reassure the dog by giving it lots of attention, this would be a mistake. You should first give attention and praise to your first dog. This establishes and maintains the pack order, likewise at feeding time the first dog should be given food first and when head in the bowl then the second dog can start eating. Again this trains the second dog their place in the pack and so avoids creating any doubt which will result in the dogs sorting it out street-style and that will cause angst and vet bills for the resulting fights and long lasting tension in their relationship.

  11. Put in small plastic bags designed for the purpose available at any bank - x100 1 Baht coins, if you go in wearing a T-shirt and shorts they will count out the coins one by one, if you look like a real person they will just weigh them.

for more discussion of appropriate attire for a visiting a retail bank branch see this thread... www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/673011-how-should-i-dress/

I was thinking about the "how to dress for weddings/funerals" thread earlier this year.

Some people just have no idea - having to ask about coins is indicative.
