  1. Good morning everyone,

The topic of retiring to Thailand is a popular and reoccurring one so I want to create discussion on something partly related.

Does anyone on here spend their winter months in thailand/se asia and if so how do they find the practicalities of doing so. Particularly relevant to the Europeans and north Americans who have horrible winters.

Me personally I am from the UK,now 40 and work in a job I enjoy and hoping to retire at 55. I live in a quiet village in south west England and from Wales originally. I am realistic in that the UK has its issues(where doesnt) but I still enjoy it here, particularly with so many places to visit in Europe being 1 to 2 hrs short hop on a plane. So I cant see myself permanently retiring to Thailand.

But I hate the gloomy winter months, lack of sunshine, damp and wet,the 17 to 18hrs of darkness. I do honestly believe I have the SAD disorder as I've grown older.

I usually spend 6 to 7 weeks of holiday leave in Jan and Feb in Asia, most of that in Thailand. This is the first year in 6 years I havent been able to do that due to covid. So I'm asking, does anyone spend 2 to 3 months every year escaping the winter in their homeland, when do they leave and return, and what do you find is good about this and are there any drawbacks?

    All advice is gratefully received

    Cheers and stay safe

Heard on the news today CEO of Delta airlines said  don’t expect international travel till summer of 2021

There is already international travel right now. And getting busier each day. He might have meant travel from US to other parts of the world and vice versa.

UK and  Europe as example are now travelling within each others areas with only a few exceptions(serbia)

Covid is a death sentence.  Better safe than sorry!!!

This illness is not Ebola. Which has between a 60 to 80% mortality rate!

Thailand has dengue fever which has worse mortality rate than covid 19. I recommend that WHO should ban thai nationals from travelling abroad forever because of this.

Or maybe people stop living in fear because the media tell you to do.

  4. It's a shame as YouTube vloggers recent videos show Bangkok and pattaya and other places getting back to some sort of normality. I've never been to Thailand i the rainy season so i wouldnt be travelling now,but i would be looking to book oct/Nov and feb/March trips now. Just cant risk making those bookings so soon with such a changing fluid situation both in the west and in south east asia

  5. I've been visiting Thailand for only a short period, since 2016. I usually visit twice a year and use it as a base to travel short haul to neighbouring countries, which has allowed me to pack in a lot of countries in each trip(Cambodia,Vietnam,Laos,Singapore etc).

This year in January I went purely to Thailand and spent 3 weeks,2 in samui and one in pattaya.

I'm very fortunate to be in a strong financial position whilst youngish at 38 and in a secure job, but I think the chances of me returning to Thailand or Asia this side of xmas is slim.

I almost feel an obligation to holiday in the UK and see some of the parts of my country I've never been to,to support small businesses here. I think others around the world will be doing likewise. Maybe short haul to Europe at the end of the summer hopefully as I had a trip to Portugal booked for September and Poland and Czech in october

Sounds pretty much like what is happening in the tourist areas, nation wide.

If I had to chose, I would say Samui would be one of the the first dominos to fall in Thailand's tourism industry.

I'm in samui at the moment heading to pattaya later this week.

It's been 2 years since I was last in samui and it is dead here! What were the busy bars in chaweng..ark bar, green mango, hush bar,on a Thursday Friday night they were half empty.

The restaurants and quiet bars are scrambling around for customers,I've eaten at a different place for lunch and dinner every day and they're all lucky if they're 30 40% full.
