No extension is available unless you are married to a Thai person.

Immigration are unable to process anything without a passport. You need to speak to the embassy.

They will tell him he needs an embassy letter
I posted this link earlier -
http://piv-phuket.com/long-stay-extensions/marriage-m/
It clearly states that Phuket immigration does not accept monthly income from abroad for extensions based on marriage unless supported by an embassy letter.

how long is "previously" reaching back in time?
It could be years - and re-entry permits do not count as new entries.

wrong
it gives you ONE YEAR on a multi entry Non-Imm-O based on marriage with a Thai. He will have to do a border run every 90 days, though
The visa might be valid for a year - BUT it does NOT provide a one year permission to stay NOR does it guarantee entry.

ah and not to forget . . anyone who is married to a Thai, can apply for a 60-day permit of stay based on "visiting the wife" on ANY immigration inside Thailand !
Only if a 60 day extension has not previously been given on the same entry

if this hasn't been mentioned yet, here it is . . it is no big deal:
He can get a 1-year permit of Stay by applying for a multi entry Non-Imm-O visa based on the marriage to a Thai, on the consulates in Savannakhet, Laos, or in Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam,
WITHOUT any proof of finances.
All he has to do on this visa, is a border run every 90 days
end of story
Using a M/E visa gives 90 day stays NOT a "one year permit to stay" --

Been living here some time now, and know many people getting an extension of stay on income from abroad.
'If not keep quiet', please control yourself.
Please explain why I and three others I know were refused.

Phuket Immigration requirements for an extension based on marriage -

Please note monthly income from abroad is not accepted unless supported by an embassy letter.

No idea what you're talking about. Phuket immigration accepts proof of income from abroad. Your statement ' It is a fact that Phuket immigration will only accept 400K Baht in a Thai bank, income from employment(verified by Thai tax records) or an embassy letter which is no longer available to Australians, Americans or Brits. ' is simply not correct.
Do you live in Phuket and have you secured an extension based on marriage using monthly income from abroad? -- If not keep quiet

Read the OP.
I did - The OP is NOT proof and is grossly misleading as those of us who deal with Phuket Immigration know.

That's what I mean if you read what I wrote. What would he declare as his income to the US Embassy if he cannot produce that same income to the Thai Immigration
You wrote " Was he going to give false financials to the US Embassy?"

How was he going to produce the required financials for his income letter from the US Embassy? Was he going to give false financials to the US Embassy? Wasn't this the reason that the 3 Embassies refused to verify the income on the income letters.
Americans never had to evidence income to their embassy - They just swore an affidavit as did Australians - Only Brits were required to provide proof of income before the embassy would issue a letter.

If he had 400K Baht in a Thai bank for the requisite length of time the problem would not have arisen

Mmm - It sounds as 'tho this American guy was attempting to renew his marriage extension based on 40K+/month income from abroad. It is a fact that Phuket immigration will only accept 400K Baht in a Thai bank, income from employment(verified by Thai tax records) or an embassy letter which is no longer available to Australians, Americans or Brits.

Some countries and notably Vietnam will refuse entry to those with an overstay stamp in the passport.

An onward ticket is rarely asked for by Thai immigration but you may be refused boarding by the airline if you do not have one. A cheap throw-away ticket to any of the neighbouring countries will suffice.

If your extension became a 90 day report how does that change the interval between reports to less than 90 days?
An extension does not 'become' a 90 day report but in my case the period between my last report and the expiry of my extension is less that 90 days - and the reporting date reflects that fact.
-
Some immigration offices reset the 90 day report at the time of renewing an extension. My next report is due in Feb on the day my extension expires - less than 90 days!

If I apply for extension to visa on arrival,
You do not qualify for a VOA but will be able to get a Visa Exempt entry which can only be extended at an immigration office. You will need a completed form + copies of your passport ID page, entry stamp and departure card. The cost is 1900 baht.

I've been advised by a friend that all I need to do is go on holiday as normal and before the first 30 days is up just do a visa run to get the second 30 days, does that sound sensible?
That would work but probably more expensive than 1900 Bht for an extension from an immigration office.

There is no period of grace beyond the extensions expiry date although if only a few days delay in renewing is involved immigration may renew the extension once the overstay fine is paid.

There is no 'fresh' start with the new year with the exception of visa exempt entries at land border crossings. A persons whole visa/entry record is available to the IO's at airports and someone who has been living in Thailand for extended periods of time using TV's should expect to be questioned and possibly be denied entry.
