    What does your bank charge?

Again, at least in the US, for big transfers they are cheaper.

My bank doesn't do transfers outside the SEPA zone any more since November last year, so I would have to move the funds to another bank first, but try to open a bank account in Europe while you are in Thailand.

What's more is, is that my bank has informed me that they will close the accounts in less than 2 months from now, because I reside in Thailand and they have to comply with EU law about money laundering.

Why volunteer any information to them?

It's not illegal to use a VPN?

Next time, use a VPN, so at least your IP Address does not trigger a red flag.

Not sure if you are stubborn or not, but my registration about a year ago, and several logins over that period, never triggered a red flag, however I never used a VPN.

I TOLD them that I am in Thailand, because from a Gmail email nobody can see from where it was sent. And I told them because I'm an honest person and wanted to avoid possible issues, since the transfer of my funds would involve several transactions, due to the limit that each transfer has.

Their refusal is simply unwarranted for, and used as a poor excuse because they suspect money laundering, which can easily be proved not to be the case.

    This is their excuse

Please note that it does not matter what nationality you are. We can send the funds from ********  to Thailand but we do not have appropriate license to operate in Thailand. As we have licenses restrictions, we had to close your account until you will return to ********* or reside in any other country we can accept the registrations from.

I'm a EU citizen with a legal EU passport and legal EU accounts, so where I'm using the internet has nothing to do with it.

Every time i had to pay duties customs applied the correct rate, do you have a specific example where they deliberately applied the wrong rate?

12 years ago I imported a salt water chlorinator from Australia, which is 0% import duties.

TNT was the transport company, and I had the correct HS code on the import documents.

When the goods arrived in Bangkok, TNT called me and told me I owed 10% import duties .

I told them that it was 0% and a few hours later they called me back that they would settle for 5%.

I told them again that according the HS code there was 0% import duties. Think there were a few more phone calls from them trying to bargain, but the chlorinator was delivered to me with 0% import duties.

    Where are you?

How do they know you are in Thailand?

    Did you use a VPN?

I am in Thailand, but obviously I'm still not Thai, and hold a legal EU passport with bank accounts in my name in the EU.

Never used a VPN to register, the only reason they know is that I emailed them explaining the reason why I wanted to transfer the funds from EU to Thailand.

Nah, mate. The reason foreigners aren't allowed to buy land is because otherwise the entire shoreline would've been bought up by now.

And who would have profited from that?

And who would profit from the other land in the same region also increasing in price?

And who would profit from all the buildings constructed on that purchased land?

And who would profit from all the businesses popping up in the area to accommodate to the growing population?

And who would profit from ......................

Never a problem with loud music in any of the condos where I've lived (knock on wood) - just constant problems with upstairs neighbors who walk like elephants and who couldn't give a fiddler's <deleted> less whether the noise disturbs anyone else or not.

So all the condos you have lived had upstairs neighbours that you could hear walking, or is that you selected the cheapest buildings, which obviously also have the lowest build quality?

don't buy a phone at Tukcom

the shops there come and go, warranty issues could be difficult to sort out.

    it's not cheaper either.

I found the best deals at Big C and Tesco

I have never bought a phone at Tukcom before, but I'm aware of them shops that are there  for at least 8 years.

Big C will not allow me to trade in my old phone, so it must already be 1500 baht cheaper than Tukcom, which I highly doubt

As a follow up to my OP, my local health center called today and said I can get my previously cancelled covid vaccination on Monday 28th June at my local hospital and that it would be a shot of Astrazeneca.

Maybe they managed to refill some of the empty vials under kitchen tap. ????

Why not just look up specs online? That's what I do.

Because the function I need is NFC, Near Field Communication, and for some of the phone it is listed as available in certain regions.

Nowhere is listed which regions that are, and even Xiaomi global can't answer the question, as I had an email conversation with them. So the only way to know for sure is boot up the phone and check in the settings

I generally view the phones in stores and then buy on Lazada.

    Ha ha.

That is also what I tend to do, but in this case I'm in the market for a new phone, while my current phone is still fine, but missing a certain function.

I have no use for 2 phones, and the Tukcom seller give me something back for my used phone, while that is not offered on Lazada.

The phones I'm interested had a similar price as on Lazada.

They have some more official brand shops on Lazada.

As for the official brand shops on Lazada, I'm particularly looking for a Xiaomi phone, and there are a few official stores of that on Lazada.

I messaged 2 of them with a question about the spec of a phone they listed, and they couldn't answer my question.

They have some more official brand shops on Lazada. They also have some in Tukcom. I would feel comfortable with either. I'm not comfortable with the more fly by night stalls. There are some smaller stores on Lazada that you can vet by the reviews and reputation stats. Nothing like that available for Tuk Com stalls.

Thanks that explains that your opinion is not based on rumors or prejudices.

If you live here long time, and visit Tukcom every now and then, you of course know which are the established stalls, so that are my reputation stats.

I know quite a few stalls that are there for many years, and if I'm looking for anything, that are the places I consult, and the ones calling out to you, I don't even give a glance.

I was there just yesterday, and the floor is half depleted, but most of those that I know for years, are still there.

As for the positive reviews on Lazada, I started a thread about that a while ago, about how credible they aren't.

  13. 3 minutes ago, Jingthing said:

I buy my phones from Lazada and would never buy from one of the Tukcom stalls.

Your opinion is respected, but do you have any valid reasons, and then I don't mean rumors but evidence or knowledge, why buying new phones from Tukcom stalls is a bad idea?

Prices on Lazada and Tukcom are similar, the advantage I give to Tukcom is that if you have a problem you can go back to the shop, where on Lazada you are dealing with someone online, and after 7 days Lazada does not get involved any more.

I would never buy a phone from one of those small stalls unless it's a cheap sub 2000 baht one.

If I want a Samsung phone, I will go to a Samsung phone shop and get one there, Terminal 21 have a Samsung shop.

If you do that, you will not get a cheap knock-off and you know that the warranty is valid.

Yes I know, and you will also pay the highest price.

Do you have any experience or knowledge that all phones sold at those small stalls are knock-offs?

Same can be said about Lazada, because they are cheaper as the official stores, they must be knock-offs, not?

  15.

I have seen quite a few objections to buying a new phone from Tukcom Pattaya, though I don't really see the reasoning.

When buying second hand, yes you don't know what you buy, but when buying brandnew, you of course see what you get when it's unpacked.

I believe there are knockoff phones, but I also believe they are easily spotted, and will most likely be highend phones, instead of mid range ones.

As I'm in the market for a new phone, I like to hear your experiences and opinions about Tukcom

I bet YOU wouldn't be a maid in LOS. They get treated abominably.

I had a Thai friend that left the bar job ( service ) and got a job as a maid. So disgusted at the way she was treated she went back to the bar.

People won't do those jobs because they pay too little and abuse too much. Better to go back to the village than be treated like that.

So because you had a hooker friend who got abused as housemaid, every housemaid in Thailand get abused.

WOW, just WOW,  if ever there was a generalisation.

As for your low payment. A housemaid that does a half decent job can easily make 800 Baht a day. Multply that with 6 days and 4 weeks is 19.200 Baht.

Few Thais that earn that every months, unles s of course they are hookers

  17. Well, that escalated quickly.

I already had an account with currencyfair for about a year, but never used it as some details about the exchange rates were confusing to me.

Today I sent them an email asking which were the procedures for sending more than 100K Euro from my personal account in Europe to my personal account in Thailand, because on their website is stated that you can send maximum 1.450.000 Thai baht in a single transaction.

30 minutes later I received an email with the flawed excuse that they are not allowed to register people residing in Thailand, and my account was deactivated.

That was by the way also how my Transferwise account got deactivated, only a few days after I had sent them an email asking the same question, but they didn't even bother to respond.

Am I doing something illegal here, or can anyone explain why that question triggers alarm bells?

The money is all legal and in the accounts for decades already, but the bank has stopped doing international transfers since november last year.
