If people cannot come here without quarantine, insurance, etc, then it doesn't matter whether it is lock down or not. In that case, I prefer lock down.

People who really hate or loath Thailand so much but still choose to live in Thailand for reason other than working, only have themselves to be blamed.

You can almost enjoy the irony. The economy has swooned and will continue to do so. Yet the mighty Baht keeps charging upward. Someone must think Thailand remains a great investment...
Yay for the mighty baht. Hope it keeps rising.

This reminds me of a story where a man is in the hospital in critical condition with a head injury. The doctor mistakes him for another patient and amputates both legs. The patient survives and the news media hails the doctor as 'SAVING THE PATIENTS LIFE"
Thailand is hot, humid and a young population. Every country with those characteristics has a low incidence of covid infection and death.Unfortunately Indonesia and Philippines disagree with you.

My opinion will be unpopular one, but I support more public holiday. Do I care about Thai economy ? nope. Do I care about Thai tourism ? nope.

Well, I did read your post. There are about 3 above expressing same thoughts.
The end result of all this after all the dust settles is Thailand will cease to be a retirement destination. As many people are experiencing the frustration of spending millions of baht in condos, cars, bikes, etc and being locked out of the country changes will be made. Fool me once shame on you, fool me twice shame on me. And worse part is there is no end in sight to this debacle.
There are going to be huge bargins on everything as expats liquidate to set up in other countries just as soon as travel opens up. Would be good time to have cash on hand......
At last someone able to see that it's better to leave Thailand than stay but keep complaining so much.

It's time for Thailand to reform themselves. The old strategy doesn't work anymore.

It's better if there is no coronavirus and life becoming easier for expat. But since that's not what happening, I can only hope my company will extend WFH policy.

BoT sits on one of the world’s largest reserves of USD. Why not release it? Instead they let the Baht/USD rise every day.
Set an assets tax, and say goodbye to expats.
Personally I really want to see less expats in Thailand.

Maybe this is blessing in disguise. Thailand should move from mass tourism and make things easier for investment.

I don't follow Malaysian politics, but their leader, an ageing old figure, was coming on the BBC news saying he was going to stop China's proxy inexaction of Malaysia, and stop their hand in every single sector. I thought back then he is going to be in trouble soon.
Cue a few days ago i turn on the news, and he is out of power, and on corruption charges.
It's obvious what is going on in SE Asia. Puppet governments for China.
White people ignorance at its best.

Given enough time and opportunity (accumulated time exposed to animals), moves closer to a certainty. That it happened in China does not make China responsible. The authorities in China delayed the flow of information for sure; they screwed up. However, the chances that they could have curtailed its spread and kept the outbreak in China is small, very small. Blaming China for the disease is ridiculous, blaming their system for failure to address the issue is appropriate, but a global outbreak was inevitable as it took weeks to discover carriers could be asymptomatic.
Blaming China for the lack of fun having a massage with a masseuse in a mask is pathetic on two counts. China can't really be blamed and genuine massages are not impacted by the wearing of a mask.
Now for the conspiracy theories. Covid-19 is not the flu. No doctor, virologist, infectious disease expert, or immunologist has said so. Politicians and armchair 'researchers' aren't qualified to comment. The great sadness of the internet is the false belief that having the capacity to state an opinion means the opinion has some validity. Most don't.
It will take months before the true transmission characteristics of Covid-19 are understood. Those will only be understood after the collaborative work of hundreds of learned medical professionals - not a bunch of self-proclaimed genius armchair researchers griping that their liberties are being stolen by some global conspiracy to rebrand a common flu as a dangerous pandemic. If doing nothing for months and allowing 130,000 to die in the US is not a clear sign that such thoughts are patently wrong, perhaps you'd be better off looking for aliens, Elvis and Hitler partying on the moon in broad daylight. I know another genius who has the coordinates if you're interested...
During a two hour massage I spend over an hour face down or on my side. Why do I need to see the masseuse's face? When some muppet talks too much, either to the masseuse or on the phone, most decent shops will ask them to shut up so all the other customers can relax. If you want more from your massage, fine. That is your choice. Don't conflate a sub-standard massage and a happy-ending with a real massage.
I agree with you. Many blame China because China is convenient scapegoat for their falling. We know white people is racist toward Asian especially Chinese. Having Trump as President doesn't help either because China dare to rise to challenge America hegemony. That's given they won't let this chance to bash China and Chinese until the end of the world.

America's fault that THB is manipulated? How so?
How about if America also manipulate dollar to make it weaker so American product will become more competitive instead of keep blaming others ?! But I doubt America will do that. America is an importer country after all rather than exporter country like China, Thailand, and Taiwan. So, America can only crying wolf.

This change would really help me out. I am in Thailand on an ED visa, and have been waiting to fly out since March in order to switch over to a non-B visa so that I can begin teaching. I was just about to fly out when the draw bridge got pulled up.
The school where I would begin teaching is strict about following the law, and says that I cannot come in to the school until I have the proper visa. There is no way to switch from an ED visa to a non-B without exiting the country and applying at a Thai embassy.
I've been hired, but can't start working or get any pay until this visa problem is sorted out. It really sucks. School started on 1 July, and someone else has to cover my classes.
I really hope this change goes into effect, and allows me to change my visa without leaving.
My company is hiring expat already in Thai and recruit just fine. Wonder how they do that without the expat leaving the country.

As much as I feel sorry for expat that cannot come back into Thailand, I feel happy that it is less crowded now in Bangkok. I used to hate riding BTS on weekend because there are so many tourists. It is very suffocating. I am happy with less tourists. I vote with my wallet not to come to place with dual pricing so I don't feel any attachment toward Thai economy or Thai tourism. Less tourist is much better for my personal life.

Yeah man.. Really sucks. I might have an option now to get a work permit through a friend of my GF her company. They are seeking English speaking foreigners with translating help. It's basically them translating and then me correcting the grammar. Will only be a few hours a week. Hopefully They will be able to get a me work permit now during the pandamic.
Doubt it. My HR say that it was impossible to get WP right now. Many comps recruit from expat already in the country as far as I know.

There are a lot of worriers and they still think they might have a problem with immigration when the amnesty is lifted and they haven't done a 90 days report since the amnesty kicked in. If you want to do it,do it online instead. If the app doesn't work, try the website.
For WP renewal, they need to do 90 days reporting. Maybe that has been the case.

With an average monthly salary in Thailand of around 18,000 baht, the term "wealthy" can be construed to mean people earning 50,000 per month, not a western definition by any means.
I agree. Wealthy according to Thai standard and western definition is very different. I hope Thai will up their games and focus on value.

There will always be affordable options and the government strategy suggestion will not eliminate such facilities. Many visitors to Thailand will not need nor want the high end resorts and that's ok. They will still have those options. However, the days of making it easy for the marginal people who take up space and do not cover more than their immediate cost of being in the country are coming to an end. Thailand is following the strategy established by mature Tourism destinations. The USA, Canada, Australia, Japan et al do not encourage the entry of financially marginal visitors and when that demographic shows up with insufficient funds or visa issues, they are denied entry. Thailand is moving towards a similar strategy. It's going to force many Thais to up their game and to focus on quality and value, and that's not a bad outcome, is it?
I agree. If this mean that Thai will up their game and focus and quality and value, then go for it. Hope something better will come from this.

I love this post because it really does bring some reality to the comments being made in this thread. Posters trashing Thailand as a destination but claiming to understand what the rich people need and where they go, whilst living here....oh no, Thailand is a sh*t hole and the wealthy would never come here, never mind the fact that I live here and know what rich people want.......the irony of it all.
It also magnifies the extent to which many farangs play up the poverty side of Thailand yet never balance it with the the other sides....the poor, the hungry, unemployed and down trodden. Is this a reflection of where they spend a majority of their time and who they hang out with, is that all they ever see and how come they never see the other side? Whilst there is a segment of poor people in Thailand, just as there is in every country, there is also a very large middle class and an ever growing upper class and there is a lot of wealth inside both those groups and a lot of normal also.
Perhaps this is a case of foreigners projecting, they look at them and realise their own circumstances are not as secure as they'd like. Just like the arguments about the strength of the Baht, posters tell us they fear for exports and the tourist trade if the Baht stays strong when really they're saying, jeeze, I wish the Baht would weaken because my lifestyle is getting stretched!
I agree with what you said. Sometimes I don't understand westerners who live in Thailand for retirement or have family here but at the same time keep trashing Thailand. If they don't like Thailand that much, they can live in another country. It's not like they cannot move into another cheaper destination like Indonesia, Philippines, Vietnam, Malaysia, Singapore, etc (of course for Singapore it's not cheaper but I think it's better country for western expat). All these countries are very beautiful, even Australian like visit Bali so much. I don't like some Thai government policy either but I don't think it's appropriate to keep trashing Thailand this much.

As I alluded to on another thread, they want rid of sex tourism and this is gonna do it for them.
It's been a wild ride guys, but the party is over.
I think this is their true goal. They are not abandoning mass tourism who really want to go shopping and holiday. They want to get rid of sexpat.
