I've been ordering pipe tobacco from the United States once or twice a year for over 10 years and never once paid any taxes. This time however, they've levied an insane 100% tax (2000 baht) which if you don't include the shipping costs is over 100% of the value of the product ($50 USD + $20 shipping).

No doubt this is to help recoup loses in the government coffers during the pandemic, but we warned this is probably a bad time to order anything unless you can be sneaky about it.

The fact that you've been able to import tobacco for personal use without paying any taxes is unbelievable compared to other countries importation laws and practices.

If a buyer in America ordered tobacco he'd have to apply for a permit or be punished under USC Title 18, Section 1716E which means paying amount equal to 10 times the retail value making a 100% tax look cheap.

There is an array of FDA laws in place governing it so it's exceptionally strict as you probably know.

These are ofcourse federal laws. I'm pretty sure if you break it you can be sent to prison and then you got a criminal record and your life goes up in smoke from there.

So all in all, comparing to the Evil empire, a 100% levy is a nothing burger.

  3. Stop the madness and stop sanitizing your banknotes!

The more you move the banknotes around while attempting to sanitize the more microparticles is dislodged from the banknotes and released into the air you breathe.

The covid virus will die in a couple of days on the paper anyway, so if you withdraw a pile of cash for safekeeping just leave it be for a few days and stop touching it.

Btw the virus can attach itself to shoes so be mindful of that.

well, you can re-enter, but not in the coming month.

There's a contingency that only workpermit holders can enter.

@Max69xl: 'Where's the scam?'  The scam is the purchase of a 3800 THB multiple entry permit good for Jan 2020 to Dec 2020 that suddenly can not be used as there's a new contingency on entry, namely workpermit.
Nope, the boarder isnt closed to people who have a workpermit and meet the entry criteria. If the borders were closed to everyone , cool, understood but it's not so.

If retirees and marriage visa holders meets the same criteria as workpermit holders, namely insurance + covid test+ healthcert they ought to be let in as they hold a valid visa and multiple entry permit - But now they're being asked to ADDITIONALLY present a work permit and there's absolutely no sensible reason for that other than an ad hoc irrational praxis to differentiate some long term residents vs. tourist by workpermit.
Workpermits have nothing to do with the global pandemic.

It means a dude who lived in Thailand for 20 years and has a family and children in Thailand and popped over overseas for a quick visit to the relatives can't return to Thailand because no work permit, despite having a 1 year marriage visa and a multiple entry permit, insurance , health cert and covid19 clearance.  Meanwhile peeps who may have lived in Thailand for just a few months but have a workpermit can still return.

    Think about it.

I would call it a global pandemic.

The policy means a bloke who lives in Thailand is not allowed back in to his wife and children because he doesn't have a workpermit.

It's an inept policy to differentiate people by the criteria of workpermit or no workpermit versus their existing visa.
it's an oversight on the migration office and may get rectified but that's how it stands currently, only numskulls try to defend it.

You may  have a  good  chance of  survival if the theory that hot air is a Covid  killer  holds   true !

The hot air theory seems unlikely to be true as the virus is prevalent in countries like Thailand and Singapore with hot air throughout the year.

How is that fact addressed by this theory? (I'm asking without sarcasm here)

  7. one thing also to keep in mind is that if you live in a condo and someone in the building catches covid, the entire building instantly becomes quarantined.

Apparently they'll provide the residents with food and supplies.

Some block of condos I've seen literally got 1000s of units within one area. So not only do you need to worry about not catching it yourself but also everyone in your building.

Someone just got it in the building in conjunction where my Mrs goes to seminars, not cool given there's a shared elevator.

Why do you think you have the right to feel cheated?

I paid 3800 THB for a multiple entry permit in January to be used with my 1 year marriage visa.

It's now declared if you leave Thailand and attempt to come back you need a workpermit which I don't have.

There's no contingency to have a work-permit issued as one pays for a multiple entry permit. I paid 3800 thb for a permit that cant be used.

Do I have the right to feel cheated or as I'm not special, I too need to bleed quietly and whisper 'thank you' while getting ass fukd while my own European country hands out permanent residence permits like it was confetti at a wedding?

She won't sell it until she NEEDS to sell it and if/when that times comes she will need the money at that point in time.

Dude, this is exactly what I said. Then you painted a sob story that everyone is selling now because they lost their job.
People sell to cash-in on the higher gold price and for a lot of reasons. Sounds to me that you think no Thais could sell their gold because they're not financially savvy to cash in and take a profit, so you're belittling them.
You don't need to go all Oliver Twist white man' s burden on me telling me I don't understand and the values and Thai family. Thailand has lower and higher income brackets just like any country, not everyone returns to Issan because no work in Bangkok even though that's what you're basing your assumptions on. White man burdens syndrom in 2020. highly unorthodox

Someone sent me this today as an easier way to read the requirements.

    Good and clear info.

I paid 3,800 Baht just 2 months ago for my multiple re-entry permit to use with my non immi O marriage visa which now won't permit me to leave and return to Thailand. The permit was issued based on non immi O visa not a contingency of having a work permit.

What do you call issuing a permit that legally can't be used now again?

    Oh that's right. A scam.
