Maybe we can make an estimation ourselves. I live in Korat, and do my retirement extention begin september. The extention has a number. The average number for the last 4 years is 4500. So that means in a year the korat immigration issues about 6750 retitement extentions a year. The most expats live in Bangkok, Pattaya, changmai, pucket and udon thani. If people from those regions make the same estimations for their province, we can see if we come close to the 72000.

there are 70 provinces, so total over 500k

  2. There is truth in these words.

Numbers from the West fell due to lack of travel insurance cover, Asian travellers do not feel the need for such covers, probably because they are self-insured from higher savings.

The truth is not that there was an increase. The first six months were down due to Suthep following his marching orders to disrupt the streets with highly visible confrontations and protests that led to travel warnings from sane governments.

So the numbers were down because of the protests, and not the nightly attacks on the protesters? Stories of protesters being attacked, and collateral damage murder of young children (reported world-wide) may have had a small effect.

yes, bangkok shut down meant to blockade the town from any activity.

That's why 16 major road interchanges were blocked, as well as ministries, government offices, with a danger of escalation into the airports as in 2010 (remember thai airways offices closing down during protests or tractors being brought from ayuthaya to close down airport?).

tourists, businessmen don't gather nigh time around the violent mob

  3. "His remarks came following renewed calls for martial law to be lifted, with many tourism businesses arguing that it adversely affects the sector."

generals always know better and will be continue martial law until they can't rob the country any more, over the bodies of dear tourist and export industry

  4. a british council (254 Chulalongkorn Soi 64, Siam Square Phayathai Road), as well as cultural centres run by consulates, usually do have small libraries and a reading room for newspapers.

they might as well have a digital subscription to read on their computers and they might charge a small fee for using it

  5. dave, available now is a 1 bedroom garden bungalow, 2 aircon, fridge, washing machine, water heater, kitchenette.

we are 4km west from sai thai mai - southern bus terminal. It's on the other side of the river from the siam sq. From khaosan rd/the old town it's 15 minutes on a free elevated motorway.

It's still bangkok, suburbs, border of the districts talling chan and thawi wattana, but very close to Nonthaburi (a province north of bkk).

long walks with dogs through nature along canals, including a major khlong maha sawat, and along a railway line. We also have a boat to paddle on a canal which is 20m away.

rent 450b/night, 2.5k week, 5k month. For weekend that would be 900b, with check in any time on friday and check out any time on sunday.

  6. thailand moved in ranking from 69 position in 2012 to 65 position in 2013, that is during a democratic ruling by the abolished government.

in 2014 they are close to position 112, as non of the countries in the chart have a martial law and unelected military government. Most probably thailand will drop from the comparison altogether. Thank you thai nationalistic capitalists and generals, pawns in their hands

  7. max, myself and my family have 5 detached houses to rent, from 1 bedroom bungalow to a modern 5 bedroom family house.

there is almost always something available.

they can be rented by units of lower or upper floor, with independent entrances.

we are off western outer ring road, motorway number 9, in thai wong wien rob nok. Less than a kilometre north from the intersection with boromratchonnani elevated motorway (it's free, runs to phra pinklao bridge, some 10km). It's 4km west from the southern bus terminal, sai thai mai.

access to houses through a 150m path along a canal Bang Tan. Parking can be arranged with neighbours for some 800b/month, if needed.

we are in the suburbs, so green and space for walks. Your dog can stay outside.

if you are working taking care of the dog can be arranged. Also boarding, if you have to be away.

depending on the season, as we depend on international tourists, rent starts from 5k/month + bills at cost and deposit 5k.

I don't mind if you stay week by week, before finding something more suitable

  8. Several years back an acquaintance was involved with unpacking/processing some newly arrived helicopters at Don Muang.

They needed all the shrink wrap removed, blades installed, tail gears set up & connected to the drive shaft etc...

That tail gear is set up at a 45 degree angle to the drive shaft gear & runs in an oil bath.

The local mechanics were checking the oil temperature.....Had make sure everything back there was 45 degrees ya know.

OK------sorry but what are you trying to tell us,------"ya know"---- no I don't

    here:

"45 degree angle to the drive shaft gear & runs in an oil bath.

The local mechanics were checking the oil temperature.....Had make sure everything back there was 45 degrees"

    the mechanic couldn't read/understand english

  9. 2 Years ago 3 fell inside 2 weeks and investigations was done but as per normal the results was never made public. At that time there was an article about the state of the countries choppers. About half of the choppers were not airworthy and they were using spareparts from broken ones to fix the ones that were in better shape. Approximately the same amount they wasted on the BT 2000 was needed to fix all the choppers. But this same army can afford 1400 generals, a blip that keeps on falling and an aircraft carrier without aircraft. If they cant run an army only a devine intervention can save this country now.

they have blamed a magnetic fault and the bad forest spirits, which live in that part of kaeng krachan national park. That's what my wife has told me at that time. The thai population has bought this explanation as absolutely sensible
