Visa expires August 1
Are you sure you're talking about the "visa"?. Isn't it your current residence permit/permission, that expires Aug. 1st.?
When you're already in Thailand, then the expiration of a "visa" has no meaning anymore (there are a few exceptions, though).

Either way, if you buy M1 hardware now, or M2x or whatever they're going to come up with later this year, make sure you get as much RAM as you can. I got me an M1 Macbook with 16GB recently and these 16GB are just about ok. If you only use BigSur standard apps, you may quickly fill 9 or 10 gigabytes. Opening an Appstore app or two and you easily hit the 15GB mark.

At this time it is possible to apply for a 60 day covid 19 extension of stay.
Ah, thanks a lot for the quick reply, ubonjoe. So I'll try this tomorrow.
9 minutes ago, ubonjoe said:What type of extension of stay did you apply for and what was the reason it was denied.
Can't remember the official name for this, is it "retirement residence permit"? (400k-based). Each time I tried to apply for this 1-year residence permit during the last 8 years, the IOs point at an odd but legally perfectly correct remark about our surnames in our marriage certificate. It has never caused any problems when applying for a visa at the embassy. I'm wondering if the IOs just want me to try harder, e.g. to "create a nicely designed envelope with beautiful artwork in brownish colours" or something like this.

End of March I arrived on a Non-O visa (marriage-based), and now have to extend my residence permission. As expected, my application for a 1-year residence permit was rejected again for several reasons. What alternative options do I have now? Can I apply for a 60-day extension in this situation? That would give me the time to prepare an 800k-based application in two months).

This is how I instantly got rid off this problem. I've turned off all the screensaver and powersaving options:
1.) SystemPreferences > Desktop&Screensaver > ScreenSaver > Start after: NEVER
2.) SystemPreferences > Battery > Battery > Turn display off after: NEVER
3.) SystemPreferences > Battery > PowerAdapter > Turn display off after: NEVERAs it turned out, these functions hardly saved energy, but created all kinds of problems.
If you really want to save battery life, these are the two most effective measures:
a) Close all browser windows that contain animated objects. Websites with animated ads, for example, are massive energy guzzlers even in background mode.
b) Watch videos in full-screen mode only. Otherwise the WindowServer process frequently hits the 50% CPU load mark for a sustained period of time (depending on video resolution and some other factors). -

Yes, I agree. This was most likely the scenario.
The disturbing part of the story was that these so-called specialists had put enormous pressure on my father to agree to a lucrative series of treatments. Buzzwords like "life expectancy", "probability calculation", "peace of mind" etc. were dropped, if I remember correctly. -

Pretty disturbing marketing campaign. And by the way, after a routine blood test my dad was diagnosed "probable prostate cancer" at the age of 69. High PSA figures, lateron "enlarged prostate" according to some CT scan a.s.o.
After talking to his GP again he ignored all the recommendations of those high-salary surgeons. Instead, he paid a bit more attention on his diet. Lower fat intake, sufficient amount of vegetables. Last year my dad died at the age of 92 in the middle of the night, while sleeping. "Age-related cardiovascular arrest" if I remember correctly.A remarkable statement by his GP at those times: "Always ask your surgeon what his/her net income is per year. If you don't get an answer, run away as fast as you can."

buy them in fresh markets - fresh.
It seems their name is "straw mushroom".
Second that. The ones you get at the supermarket often have no taste, but the ones you find at the fresh markets/wet markets can easily keep up with the best Almond Mushrooms from France or southeast Europe.
Just in case anyone wants to do a little further research:

But we are customers of Villa
Last time I looked at Central Festival I couldn't find any Royal Project products.
Some of the Villa markets do Oolong teas from the Suwirun gardens, by the way. Their Oolong 12 and 17 are excellent. A bit pricey, though, but definitely worth a try. Just checked, it seems you could also place an order directly at the Suwirun website, see

Try "LUSH The Greeench" powder. Amazing stuff. Developed in the U.K., manufactured in Japan, if I remember correctly. There are LUSH shops in some of the Terminal 21 shopping centres, otherwise you can order it online,

They discontinued exactly this one.
That's one of the reasons I completely switched to Royal Project teas a while ago. The Highland Black Tea, as recommended by @fantom is quite nice. Since the moment I started experimenting with the Oolong varieties of the Royal Project, however, nothing else goes into my teapot anymore. Their Chiang Mai and Chiang Rai tea gardens are some of the best in the world, IMO.
Difficult to get in Pattaya/Jomtien area, though. (In Bangkok: there are Royal Project shops at MRT Sam Yot and MRT Kampheng Phet stations.) Alternatevely, Villa and makro do Dilmah teas. They are pretty nice, too. Try the Dilmah English Breakfast Tea.- 1

the trick is to find a place where the mountains block some light pollution,
In my experience, the trick is to avoid agriculture, not light pollution. In Thailand, unfortunately, agriculture is synonymous with smoke. And this is where the mountains come in. Mountainous regions have less agricultural activity, i.e. less smoke in the air.

That's not the job of an ELCB.
Lighning protection includes one or several Surge Protection Devices. If correctly dimensioned and installed, the Surge Protection Device trips before dangerously high voltage can appear on metal enclosures.

Wine Connection has a reasonable range of decent wines
Kinda strange, innit. The climate in Thailand is ideal for growing some of the major grape varieties. Why don't they sell original Thai wine from real Thai grapes? It's just "not cool", I guess.
The only place for single-origin Thai wine that I know of is Silver Lake near Sattahip. Their red wines are quite okay, but surprisingly, their whites are exceptionally good. I just don't like their marketing bs very much.
Any hints on where else to look?

There is no such thing as an instant international money transfer.
It depends on the type of account at the Thai bank.
My wife has two accounts with GSB, both opened at the same GSB branch in the sticks.
(1) is a standard savings account with a debit card and pretty low recurring fees.
(2) is some sort of special savings account with a visa credit card. Costs around 600 Baht a year IIRC. It's not a giro account.
We tested the transfer times to both accounts several times. Same amount, same reason "sending home to family", nearly-simultaneous transfer of the Euros to Wise's Belgian SEPA account.
The results are always the same:
Transfer time to (1) is between 10 and 22 hours.
Transfer time to (2) is between 1 and 30 minutes.(on condition that
- the amount is less than 2000 Euro,
- the transfer is made during the Thai bank's business hours,
- the sending bank allows Realtime SEPA Transfers) -

would be nice to invest in a fixed-income asset
First of all you should learn about the monetary system.
As soon as you understand the graph below (M2/U.S./10y)
you'll understand that an investment in fixed-income securities is generally a losing proposition.

Bonds often publish the yield figures only for legal or taxation reasons.
This number has little to zero influence on the overall performance of your investment in the long term. -
Last week I travelled from Hua Lamphong to Udon on the night train. No issues whatsoever. Later, however, on arrival in a rural village, the picture was somewhat different. The wife of the village elder started to ask silly questions, indicating that everything I look at gets instantly contaminated with billions of virus particles.
4 minutes ago, AndyFoxy said:No wonder the virus is booming with attitudes like this.
As always, the biggest health risk in this case is travelling to and from the railway station. 331,592 injured in road accidents during the first 3 months and 23 days of this year. Plus 5,120 killed this year so far.
Or as my GP says, always wear a KN95 mask in public places and you're pretty much safe from any respiratory disease problems.

Blue Butterfly Pea blossoms (อัญชัน - an-chan). The scientific name of this plant is indecent language. Do your own research if you really want to know.
Grows on nearly every type of soil. Needs a lot of sun. A cold infusion maintains this flashy blue colour. The hot infusion changes the colour towards navy blue.
The pure unmixed taste is somewhat dull, mildly floral and sweetish, slightly grassy. This, however, goes very well with a moderate amount of lemon grass or ginger.

Where the heck can one find accurate information?
There is a clickable map at

A click on the name of most provinces leads to a page with five news sections each (in Thai language). Usually section 2 is the link to the rules for travelling in or out of the province.

no less than Baht 400,000 in a bank account
@Surelynotreferred to a "bank book or passbook". This obviously rules out a chequing account/current account for the 400k requirement. So what type of bank account does it have to be? Fixed-deposit account? Savings account?
I'm in the same situation as the OP, with the same type of visa. After 2 weeks of ASQ plus 1 week of Songkran with the banking system coming to a standstill, I guess I'll have precisely 5 days to open a bank account to get the two months seasoning period right.

The problem being the online site hasn't been working since the middle of February.

This indicates that for hotels there is currently a way to do the TM30 in paperless way.

Do nothing. How long are you staying?
yes, if I would silently leave the country after the Non-O-intrinsic 3 months residence permit, then I could simply ignore the TM30 issues, hoping nobody takes notice.
My plan, however, is that I'll try to open a bank account a.s.a.p., so the money necessary for a 1-year residence permit can "mature" for 2 months before I apply for that residence permit. Therefore, it'll be inevitable that I get in touch with an Immigration Office in the near future. And that's the moment the officers will have a close look at my TM30 history.

I can second that. Actually, I was even asked for a slightly higher amount. It seems that the general rule is: the larger the province the higher the figures for the brown envelopes. In my case the solution was I moved to one of the smaller neighbouring provinces and tried at this IO (requires a new address, i.e. a rental contract for at least 1 month). The officer at the smaller province IO then recommended me to do a 60-days covid extension first, which cost me precisely 1900 Baht. Then she explained me the procedure on how to proceed after the 60 days' period, and then just indicated that the "... rookies in this room would be absolutely delighted if you ...", which I happily did and was completely voluntarily, anyway.
