Don't judge all the diving around Koh Tao on just one dive site particularly when the conditions were not so good on the dive in question.
Koh Tao has much nicer dive sites to offer than Japanese gardens such as Sailrock, Chumpon pinnacles, South west pinnacles, Shark island, Green rock, Twins and White rock just to name a few.
I would suggest a return visit when the conditions are better and try to see a few more dive sites and then you will hopefully get a better picture.
As for the best diving in Thailand then as has already been mentioned the Similan and Surin islands off the west coast of Thailand offers the cream of the crop and best to get yourself on a liveaboard trip anytime between November and May (March and April the premier months) to experience some fantastic Thai diving.

I think it is funny that the topic assumes that a thai partner would be more concerned with the time spent than the content.
my partner has sat down for an entire afternoon to read TV a few times.
On these occasions she has noted: "they complain alot. why don't they go home?"
She has also been quite offended by some of the recurring anti-thai/anti-thailand themes she reads and has remarked that in comparison i come off pretty well.
she quite regularly asks me why are you still reading that crap?
i rarely have a good answer.
That made me chuckle t.s

A sadder side of the place, Thailand supplies many mailorder brides to desparate western men; we don't necessarily want to allow free access to those men to come back, given the horrendous divorce stats, and general 'loser status' of the husbands concerned - we won't exactly get the cream of society coming here with an open door policy. There are limits to comparing developed and developing countries - hel_l even NZ has to play around with their immigration formula the whole time to get the type of people they want.
You mean Steve, that Thailand doesn't want a bunch of "conjugal tourists" marrying their first tee-rak they meet on Soi cowboy and getting Thailand PR and then citizenship?? Kinds sounds quite clever public policy to me. I guess, they are then forced to move back to the partners country.
Win-win I guess, and Piggy Muldoons comment about raising the average IQ's of both countries does comes to mind.

My brother-in-law was deeply unimpressed with the Lomprayah bus, to be honest. He is fairly large for a Thai guy and barely fit in the seats. He said the bus ride was long enough to be very uncomfortable.

If you're a big person probably best to take the sleeper train ....
Train number 85 departs from Bangkoks Hualampong station at 7.30pm to arrive in Chumpon at 4am.
2nd class with fan upper bed is 440Baht or lower bed is 490Baht
2nd class with air con upper bed is 620Baht or lower bed is 690Baht
1st class bed is 1100Baht

The Lomprayah company run a VIP bus and catamaran twice daily from Bangkok to Koh Tao departing at 6am to arrive at 2.30pm and again at 8.30pm to arrive at 8.30am.
You can book at their Bangkok office on soi Rambuttri which is parallel to Khaosan road or at any travel agent in the area.
The Seatran company also run a VIP bus and boat from Bangkok to Koh Tao departing at 8.30pm to arrive at 9am.
Their Bangkok office is located next to Khaosan road in the Trok Mayon opposite Ranees guesthouse and restaurant.
The price will be around 700-800Baht depending where you make your reservation.
Both companies are safe and reliable.

Last flight I took with airasia arrived in Bangkok 30 minutes early !
This was from Krabi and as I had booked 3 months in advance the price was only 1100Baht including tax and fuel.
Bargain !

Its hard to imagine people behaving so immaturely and narrow mindedly towards somebody that their own flesh and blood cares for but unfortunately this behaviour does occur (as you have witnessed).
Coming from a male perspective, I had a similar experience with my in laws when I started dating my Thai girlfriend but it wasn't quite as brunt as your experience.
Nether the less, it was made clear that they did not approve of their daughter dating a non Thai person and their hope was that our relationship wouldn't last.
Our difference in situation is that we are living in Thailand whereas you are in Canada and the biggest fear for my in laws was that I would 'whisk' their daughter off to another country never to be seen again hence the opposition to our relationship.
This may be the crux of your in laws opposition ... they may fear that their son may never return from the land of bears and lumberjacks, his heart kidnapped by the evil canuck.
From my own experience 'time' was the answer ... our relationship continued and they had no choice but to conceed that their daughter was happy and we eventually got married.
I just stuck around like that ugly vase that 'Aunt Ethel' might give you that you intially want to throw in the trash but it grows on you with time and eventually you come to like this vase.
I just made sure that I looked after their daughter so that they could see she was happy.
Justice will prevail !
Just keep being yourself Candiandgirl and hopefully time will takes its toll on your in laws too so that they can see their son is happy and hopefully come round to accepting you and your relationship with him.

My wifes passport (Thai) will expire in November this year and will need replacing.
In her existing passport she has a valid 10 year multi entry US visa.
What happens to this visa when she gets her new passport ?
Will her US visa still be valid within her old passport in conjunction with the new passport or must we go to the US embassy here in Bangkok to get it transferred to the new passport ?

I think its a little unfair on girlx to insinuate that she's a little generous with the truth when in all fairness from reading her posts on here and in other forums she just seems to be too honest.
Theres a certain amount one can choose to reveal about ones life on a forum and weve each got our own limits ... the more information you reveal then the more information there is to be questioned.
Its certainly not too incredulus to believe drugs can be planted on people and its certainly not too incredulus to believe this can happen on Koh Phangan (or anywhere for that matter).
There is a good message in this thread for everyone (expecially those new in Thailand) and that is be careful with whom you associate and how you behave.

I'm not so sure that you are being entirely honest with us here Terence ...
I think the real reason behind your hostility towards the 'large' stranger in your midst at the Chapel Rambuttri the other night lies far from the issue of prostitution but in actual fact lies within the issue of male fireman competitive nature ...!
The chapel Rambuttri is very much a small traditional parish for regular farangs, Thais, katoys and soi dogs alike all imbibing comfortably in peace and harmony with each other... no surprises, no shocks.
Suddenly the peace was shattered by the arrival of a 'new kid on the block' and not only a 'new kid' but one that had already 'scored' ... candy in hand and proving that if hes successful elsewhere he can be sucessful on new turf also !
Not only has the new kid been successful with a member of the opposite sex he's also of 'larger stature' which means a larger stomach for drinking the dwindeling supplies of ale within Terences territory !
An imbalance was invisaged by Terence this very night as he pictured all his beloved katoys, soi dogs and beer retreating into the distance with the big stranger never to be seen again !
A modern day viking pillaging and plundering upon the very parish that Terence calls home !
So here ladies and gentlemen lies the real reason for Terrys insecurity !

I'll leave it to Bendix to discuss his go go dancing and extremely long wanger but back on track, a mate of mine had his drink spiked one night here in Bangkok and woke up minus some cash but he insists that his bottom was intact.
Unfortunately yet another hearsay story and I have yet to experience this phenomenan myself but believe it to be plausible if not exactly a common occurance.

Terry kindly forgot to mention that the said incident that occurred in the said chapel did so occur well after the witching hour and well after the better part of 2 dozen beer laos, leos and changs had been consumed.
The said perpetrator of the whole affair 'the fatman' was in fact an ELEPHANT and his small mahout (who did have long hair though) making business in the wee hours from drunk farang feeding the pachyderm bananas.
Obviously the amount of alcohol Terence consumed had a bearing on his perception of the incident and he would probably also deny any knowledge of going back to his place afterwards with the katoy 10, the elephant, the mahout, a big jar of KY and a medium sized box of viagra !

A shocking alternative is they could have called the police who would have got rid of him. It makes them aware of the problem and the trouble Thai dude would not be returning again because they would know who he is.
And if the guy was mentally ill then that takes it to a different level although wew have heard that doctor Terry did a full examination first and conclusively proved that this was not the case.
A simple solution to the problem with no violence needed.
You're right Maddy there is no need for violence as that bloody well hurt my noggin that big bottle did (it wasnt empty) and that wasnt a rifle I had under my sarong ...!
