  1. Nooooo!   The Captiva ( affectionately known as a Craptiva in Australia) has a shocking reputation for issues. They are a cheap badge engineered vehicle that GM bought from Daewoo.

I would not recommend buying one at any price...

watch this , then make up your mind..

I don’t have a favourite as such but currently I’m enjoying watching Tread the Globe.

A down to earth Brit couple who sold up and went to travel round the world in their van “ Trudy “.

80,000 km to date and this month they are in Thailand, a particular favourite as they honeymooned here 25 years ago, and stopping at various places on their way back home.

Obviously they are discovering things here that we have known for a long time but interesting their outlook and reactions.

I have been watching this couple as well, and although I think they are genuinely nice people , I find them very annoying to watch because they are really quite uninformed.

On the other hand, I find Paddy Doyles videos much better. Good cinematography, a bit of a story , and quite informative.

For my motoring fix, I follow Mat Armstrong, and Tavarish.

That is an awful lot of labour intense maintenance house an all. so you intend to make a lot of noise with your jet skis and go-karts.  Even your faraway neighbors/and future will get really peed off. not offence intended, but you need to pull in your reins. I'd stick to bananas pineapples.

    I disagree here.

Plan big , cut back where finances or experience dictate - but do what You want.

My Thai family shake their head at some of my excesses - but hey  - I don't waste any money on cards or lotteries. It is swings and roundabouts!  They poo-pooed some of the advanced trees I bought - but now - a year down the track, they water them and like them even more than I do!

Wow... 50 rai! Hopefully with a third of the land turned into a lake (which will happen sooner rather than later depending on existing clay content) it will be manageable. A ride on lawnmower was always a bucket list item, so ideally that and a houseproud wife will keep things under control.

Stay calm - great advice although it's not one of my strong points. I'm hoping this project will both frustrate and mellow me, if that's possible.

     👍

Ride on mowers are dear as poison in LOS ( and I have only seen geared and not hydrostatic transmissions too), and generally not up to the task - especially if you have a few rocks! ( where I am , I have a bit of dirt hiding between the rocks!).

I ended up with a small kubota tractor (B2140) with a 1 metre slasher deck. Does not do a manicured fairway (!) - but keeps the jungle at bay!  A good second hand tractor (with dozer blade & slasher) will set you back a similar amount to a ride-on - about 150k , but give you greater opportunity to use it. Just  my opinion!

    Cheers

  5. Congratulations!  Exciting (and sometimes frustrating) times to come!

We have done a similar thing, been in house for nearly a year now. Loving it - but always plenty to do!

We ended up planting potatoes back in some of  our land (we have 50 rai) - otherwise was just too hard to keep it under control. In the dry season we can cope, but in growth times, I clear an area, turn around - and it is all back again!  (we owned the land for a few years before we built so we could plan things properly - 'do it properly - do it once')

Good luck with the project. Enjoy - and stay calm!

  6. As others have said - no problem with buying buffalo. Surely some local issan farmers will be happy to sell you one/some - but be prepared to pay farang price.  Should be from about 12k up , depending on age/sex/pregnancy etc.

As far as the donkey goes... Why? they are obstinate , useless creatures - definitely not 'pet material'. (more like pet food)

The only suggestion I would have is to make sure you have some sort of yards or handling area , in case the beasts need medication or treatment at some time.   Bloody Hobby Farmers!!  they use to be the bane of my life!

Generally it was a young greenie couple with 1 cow. They would call me because she was sick. I would arrive at the property - to be told 'Clover is over there. She is really quiet'.  When someone new comes up to her - unless she was on deaths door - the poor vet (me), would spend the next 20 minutes trying to catch the patient!

One of my rules of veterinary practice was 'if you can't catch the patient , it doesn't need treatment!'

  7. I had a .22 rifle in my early twenties. Used it for work, carrying it around in the back of my car. (country vet - used to euthanise animals) .  Handed in after the Port Arthur incident.

Don't miss owning a gun - and feel happier in a society where they are 'less visible'.

  8. Mass poisoning of rats in Bangkok would be a no go due to potential collateral targeting of other animals and people by rodenticides - either the anticoagulant varieties or cholecalciferol poisons - which cause acute renal failure when ingested.

Myxomatosis is a viral disease that only affects European rabbit species.

Bubonic plague is a bacterial disease , that was spread by fleas, often carried by rats.  The great plague epidemics in the past occurred at a time when there were no antibiotics. We now have many antibiotics that could treat the Yersinia infection. I think there is no fear of another major Bubonic plague outbreak!

The way I see it, the basic and universal problem is that the legal distinction between male and female humans is itself a discrimination on the basis of sex, a discrimination between men and women. Eliminate that distinction and all problems are solved.

Separate sports competitions, for example, have been mentioned and possible problems arising if a man choses to identify as woman and enters a competition for woman. If you have competitions for humans instead of separate competitions for men and women, no problem arises. Has anyone ever seen separate races for male and for female horses or dogs or mice, etc? (Don't mention cock fights or the animal rights activists will come after you 🙂

FYI there are many horse races that are only for fillies , or colts and geldings.

I am not well versed on mouse racing...

  10. So let me try to understand this.

"safety concerns" with people keeping lions in Thailand.

Recent reported incidents involving lions attacking people in Thailand - none that I am aware of.

Response : scrutinise , fine , confiscate lions

People keeping Pitbull type dog breeds in Thailand - no problem

Numerous injuries and deaths following attacks in the last few years.

Response , generally a rap on the knuckles or furious attempts to rehome the offending dog.

No, still don't really understand this....

  11. I have had reading glasses , and prescription driving glasses made for me by the top shop which you are referring to. They do their eye testing in store , check my prescription , check against my older glasses - and the finished product - it is always okay - but not quite as good as the pair they were replacing. A lens fell out of one pair after 2 days! They did fix that, but it was a 1 week turnaround..

My eyesight has not deteriorated, I just needed to replace glasses because they were scratched or damaged.

I no longer go to the Top shop.

I have bought better and Much cheaper glasses from Zenni.
