Thai people don't seem to crave it much. Chiang Mai is chock full of outlets, with no apparent customers. I only smelled it while walking thru the foreign guesthouse ghetto and a certain dance

    club zone.

I don't think 'crave' is the right word, but plenty of Thai people smoke weed, most of them are not so blatant about smoking it in public, that's all.

It makes no sense to sell just weed and have to price rent into your product.

Tell that to every retailer of anything. Of course on paper it makes sense. You can keep your inventory in a box in a safe, you need a tiny storefront and it is the most expensive agricultural product you can get your hands on per kg.  The problem is too many shops. Tragedy of the Commons.

I only go to a physical location. I don't trust online vendors tbh

I don't buy much online. My wife does it for me ( it's few purchases a year). I don't want my personal and credit card details going to ?????? Not only that be directly associated with weed which is only kinda sorta legal here... anywhere.

There are plenty of highly reliable online vendors. They all do cash on delivery. 'kinda sorta legal'. Are you scared the authorities will know who you are? They could not give a rat's <deleted> about you. It's not illegal.

I think it's a novelty. I seriously doubt it becomes a thing with middle class, educated Thais unless immersed in western culture, sensibilities. I've all the young people I've known I'd say a fraction will even try it later in adulthood. Not surprising, professionals usually not big weed smokers. If nothing else the absentmindedness

Novelty will wear off and weed shops in further dire straits. Only best and cheapest survive.

It's very much a thing with educated middle class Thais. Nothing to do with western culture. Plenty of professionals too. I really don't think that you know too much about the scene and are making some guesses.

That says more about you than about Thais. Try socializing in places other than 7-11 steps.

The majority of Thais I know have nice houses, cars, motorcycles. They can easily afford good bud. The shops I frequent are 95% Thai customers. FACT.

Absolutely agree. All of the bud shops round me (Bangkok, far away from tourist areas) sell almost exclusively to Thai customers. I never understand why people think that Thai people don't have money. Open your eyes people.

They need to keep these farmers employed, so they subsidise where they can.

Spending the money to mechanise the industry and make it more cost effective would see mass unemployment which would cost more in the long run.

They are going to have to do something. Thailand is becoming a super-aged society by 2029. There will not be enough people to do the work anyway.

No need for statistical evidence. Would you want your teenage kid to smoke weed?  Plenty of evidence available regarding its negative effects on especially growing brains. It retards cognition.

Who said anything about teenage kids? Here's what I said earlier in this thread:

"He also showed alleged proof of an unidentified youth buying cannabis buds from an unnamed cannabis shop."????

ME:  Then they should be prosecuted accordingly. Just like selling alcohol to a minor. It needs to be controlled, just like anything else, with appropriate regulations.

Strange. The longer a tourist stays, the more money they spend

Yes. But 'proper' tourists spend MUCH more than those who live here and use the system to stay here, which makes up all the people complaining right now. Average tourist spend is 5,100 a day.  150,000 a month. We see plenty of videos and stories out there about how you can live for $1,000 a month, one fifth of the spend of a typical tourist. Is it any wonder that they are happy to let tourists in for a month but make others jump through a few hoops?

Thailand has over 800,000 hotel rooms which when multiplied by 365 nights equals 292 million guest nights or 350% of the required need

If there's anything else I can help you understand, please feel free to ask.

292m guest nights. Average stay 10 nights. Based on your math that would be 35% of the required need. But it isn't, because many rooms are taken by couples (or more). Thailand's occupancy has been at approximately 70%, which is a sweet spot for hotels and of course, covers low season as well. The short answer is to accomodate 80m tourists, which is double the amount of the 2019 figure, you need to double the amount of rooms, or encourage people to stay shorter (no)! or encourage people to travel during low season and shoulder times (difficult).

Now all that is needed is for the price to become reasonable. In San Francisco the price for good quality bud is about 282 baht per gram here they are asking 650 baht and up.

Prices will become more reasonable. They have to. Supply and demand will drive them down. Look at the number of weed shops in Bangkok compared to SFO.  Big competition will come once the honeymoon period is over and they start getting better at growing.
