  1. Good information about skin cancer treatment in Bangkok.

I have an additional question for those in the know...

At Bumrungrad do they do sentinel Lymph node biopsies (aka: Lymphoscintigraphy Spect CT) for diagnosing whether melanoma cancer cells have spread to the lymph nodes?

Any other hospitals in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, or Pattaya do this?

    A brief follow-up...

I went to Bangkok Hospital for treatment (i.e., CT Scan, Lymphoscintigraphy Spect CT, sentinel lymph node biopsies, melanoma wide excision). The treating oncologist was Dr. Tanaphon Maipang.

Fortunately, no cancer was found beyond the original scrape biopsy location.

I am very happy with the care I received,

  2. Back to my original question...

I've been advised by a top US cancer surgeon to have a sentinel node biopsy concurrently with surgery to remove a melanoma. The location of the melanoma does not foretell which lymph node may be affected.

At Bumrungrad (or any other Thai hospitals) -- do they do sentinel Lymph node biopsies (using a Lymphoscintigraphy Spect CT) for diagnosing whether melanoma cancer cells have spread to the lymph nodes?

    Thanks.

  3. Sentinel lymph node biopsy is usually done by taking a sample of lymph nodes closest to the cancer to see if any spread to them. Lymphoscintigraphy on the other hand means uses a special technique to map the lymph drainage in order to determine which node that would be, if it is not already evident (which depending in the location of a cancer, it may already be). . It is usually done for breast cancer where the lymph system is large and complex.

Virtually any large hospital can do a sentinel lymph node biopsy, for an type of cancer. I don't know how many can do so using lymphoscintigraphy but frankly in melanoma that would be the least of my concerns. The bigger issue is the skills of the surgeon is recognizing suspicious lesions/nodes and in excising enough tissue, and in the case of melanoma especially, the skills of the pathologists in reading the slide need to be considered. There is very little experience with melanoma in Thailand, only a handful of docs that are really up on it.

If you need a specialist in melanoma let me know, it is quite some time since I last researched this but if I recall, the few there are, were at Siriraj. Please specify if the melanoma has already been confirmed.

Yes, initial excision diagnosed as melanoma. Further excision and lymphoscintigraphy to determine possible spreading is the recommended course of action.

What about oncologist Dr. Rattiya Cheewakraingkrai at Chiang Mai RAM Hospital?

  5. Something I wonder about as the country slowly descends into mob rule, will farangs become targets for their rage? I keep hearing that many Thais hate us and only put up with us because we spend money. I don't know how true this is or even what percentage hate us if it is true but something to think about perhaps.

I walked among the crowd at Metropolitan police headquarters a few weeks ago, I could hear people say "farang this & farang that..."

It might have been พลัง pa lang - energy, power, strength - a staple phrase in rousing political speeches . .

(btw, I posted this yesterday and it got deleted - What? Too inflammatory?

I did not hear this ("falang") in the speeches, but in the crowd. .

What I heard was people in the tightly packed crowd commenting on the fact that a "falang" was at their party & "look, he's taking photos." There did not seem to be malice to it, rather, just a tone of surprise.

The comparison with the 2010 UDD rally is probably not valid as the red shirts were "living" at Ratchaprasong. The Suthep-led folks were obviously just out for the Sunday afternoon. The big Siam malls were all closed, too, which may have pissed a few people off.

Anyways, the fact that I am a farang is pointed out to me on a regular basis...

  6. A couple of questions related to this thread...

I have a retirement visa "extension" issued in Jomtien last August. I also have a multi-entry permit. The extension expires next month.

Can I apply for another one year multi-entry permit before the expiration?

Or, do I have to apply for a new one year extension (with all req. docs) and a new multi-entry permit?

    Also...

I need to make a 90-day report prior to July 15.

Do you think the Jomtiern office will allow me to apply for my new extension (and/or multi-entry permit) at this time (my extension ends Aug. 25)?

    Thanks for your input.

  7. I just did this back in August.

Made the appointment online. Showed up on time. Added 50+ pages. Also got my income verification affidavit (for a Non-O-A Visa) at the same time. No snags. $132us on my credit card.

The only problem was I had to sit and watch Fox News in the waiting area! Freakin' conservatives!

  8. Well, on the ground here in Bangkok support is very strong for the Reds.

Increasing amounts of traffic with red flags driving around.

I would even suggest support is growing, now that more people are seeing past the propaganda this is "just Thaksin" and realising some people are at last standing up to the elites and their corruption.

Hopefully the House will be dissolved soon and the power returned to the lovely Thai people who can have a vote and excercise their Democratic rights.

Well done the reds, and well done the people of Bangkok for supporting them, cheering them, giving out food and drink !!!!!!!

LOL ... strange that NOBODy supports your views and that they are not seen by anyone that is actually on the ground in Thailand :)

That there are SOME taxi-drivers that are pro Thaksin is true. Other than that your post is just subjective propoganda.

I was at Siam last night about 11pm, walked through the entire rally, and I would have to say I had a strong 'feeling' from people in the crowd that they are expressing themselves w/o reservation. Just good Thai people who want their country to consider their views.

As I left I could see many people coming to join the rally. Besides, night time is the best time to be out and about in BKK this time of year.
