  1. Thanks guys for your replies, I was reluctant to install an outdoor aerial until I was sure that that was the problem, so I re-tuned the box as ThaiDown suggested and Ch7 is now back as clear as ever.

The wife is now very happy and I can have my TV back again.

Thanks once again - The power of ThaiVisa!!!!!!

  2. My wife loves to watch channel 7 every night through a digital set top box with an indoor aerial.

For the last few days there has been no signal for that channel, but every other free to air Thai tv channel is working normally. I can get channel 7 on Livenettv.net on my Amazon firestick, so they are still transmitting, but if I let her watch that, I can't watch tv!

Does anyone know what has changed and why?

  3. EMS in UK is not operated by Royal Mail, it's operated by Global Priority which is part of Parcelforce.

    Try tracking it here.

    https://www.parcelforce.com/track-trace

If that doesn't work you can contact them via the "contact us" link on that page. I had a similar problem last year and they were very helpful and the parcel eventually got delivered.

If it's still in Thailand I wish you luck trying to get any help from Thailand Post. http://track.thailandpost.co.th/tracking/track-help/contact-thai.htm

As I plan on moving to Korat, does anybody living there know any odd quirks like this at there Immigration? It would be good to know ahead of time. As I renew my retirement extension this week here in Phuket, I will be doing my next 90 day up there......last one here took under three minutes, I barely sat down. Almost enjoyable.

No such problems in Korat. If you're applying based on money in the bank the bank letter has to be dated the same day as the application. If you're applying based on income just the Embassy letter will do. Both options you need to show evidence of address, in my case that's a copy of the wife blue book and her ID card, plus copies of relevant pages of your passport. That's all.

When you arrive, you or the house holder will have to notify them within 24 hours (TM30). Don't wait for 90 days!

  5. To the OP, it depends very much on what you need it for. Only you can decide if it's worth the hoops you may have to jump though to get it.

It seems pretty obvious from the replies here that each Amphur has it's own criteria, so you can only ask your local Amphur, and it depends how well in you are with the local Pu Yai Ban as to how much his/her reference is going to cost you.

Personally I've lived here nearly 10 years and never needed one. I don't own my car and motorbike, they're both in my wife's name. Not a problem for me!

I got a 1 year and subsequent 5 year driving licence with "residence letters" from Immigration. The first one was free, the second one was 500 baht! I'm pretty sure my local LTD won't accept a yellow book as proof of residence for a licence, only the immigration letter.

I have accounts with 4 different Thai banks and never needed a Yellow book to open an account with any of them.

I'm not intending to apply for permanent residence so I won't need it for that.

So I'm quite happy spending the rest of my days here without a Yellow Tabien Ban.

So you need to go and talk to your local Amphur to check their requirements, and have a word with your Pu Yai Ban, then make your own decision as to whether it's worth it or not.

  6. So it seems like it may be not just Korat then.

Personally I don't need one for another 4 years when I renew my driving licence, but there are others who need one more often for other reasons..

I've just heard from a Swiss friend who went today in Korat for a residence letter to support continuance of his Swiss pension which has to be done annually. Initially he was refused but after a long discussion they reluctantly agreed to do it, but stated that there would be no more!

  7. In the last few days I've heard of 2 people being told by Korat Immigration that they no longer provide Certificates of Residence. They say it's a new "regulation".

That suggest that it also applies to other Immigration offices!

This has only happened in the last couple of days. One week ago they were still available.

Has anyone else had this experience at Korat or other immigration offices?

  8. I agree with Skatewash, Embassies and Consulates often give out incorrect or mis-leading information, and the paragraph you have quoted above is certainly mis-leading.

I'm totally confused about all this. Why do you need to leave the country? If you already have an "extension of stay" based on a work permit, then when you next go for an extension just apply for an extension based on marriage instead. No need to leave the country or get another visa. I know people who have done that, but not in Bangkok. I suspect that the advice you were given is because your wife may have been asking about a "change of Visa", not a change to an "extension of stay based on marriage".

If that is not acceptable to your local immigration, just make a trip to Vientiane or some other nearby Embassy or Consulate and get a single entry Non Imm O based on marriage. As many have said before, if you get a Tourist Visa you will need to get it changed to a Non Imm O in Bangkok before it can be extended, which is a waste of time and money.

  9. I just drove along about 12 Km of the Korat by-pass, not far from that accident.

In that 12 Km I counted 23 sets of white paint on the road put there by the police to indicate the vehicle positions after an accident. That means 23 accidents in a 12 KM stretch of dual carriageway over 3 days. Admittedly many of them were probably minor shunts, but it gives you an idea of how bad the driving standards are.

  10. So on Wednesdays the beaches are empty of those pesky tourists who come to Thailand to enjoy a beach holiday, to sit on a chair under an umbrella and enjoy good local food and drink, maybe a massage or an ice cream etc!

So where are they all? Probably packing their bags and planning their next holiday somewhere else!!!!!!!!!

  11. All good stuff above.

I will however add a warning for those contemplating a boost pump.

Don't pump direct from the mains!

It's illegal (but many ignore that) and you stand a good chance of sucking the contents of next doors duck pond into the supply (check valves are rarely fitted to outdoor taps) which is not something you want.

A small (1000L) buffer tank is the way to go, it will see you past the inevitable short supply interruptions too. A simple sediment filter on the incoming supply will keep out the large crunchy bits.

    Good advice from Crossy!

Whatever you do you must not fit a pump direct to the incoming water supply. You must have a storage tank in between. As Crossy says, a 1000L tank will normally be sufficient unless you have regular supply interruptions for long periods, in which case you'll need something bigger.

  12. How can this happen when Pattaya has the special beach Police (in orange) patrolling 24/7?

I was in Pattaya for 6 days a couple of weeks ago. I walked along Beach Road from Soi 8 to Mike Shopping Mall every night and never saw any of the "boys in Orange"! I saw lots of ladyboys though.

I also drove along Beach Road several times in the day-time and never saw an "Orange shirt" except on the big posters!

So where are they and what are they (not) doing?

  13. If he makes a flight out of country and returns before he has to apply it will clean him of this affliction.

    They don't care at airports.

Returning he will have a fresh 90 days.

But if he flies out without getting a re-entry permit from immigration he'll loose his extension and only get 30 days on return.

When you go for the re-entry permit it will be noticed that you haven't reported and you'll get fined 2000 baht.
