maybe you get the deferred % increase, on top of the amount he would have got when he first became eligible

Yes, that sounds feasible. But in order to get the deferred % (5.8%) you would not receive (in my case) GBP19,255.60 over the 24 months you deferred. At our age, (and I'm healthy and fit having just turned 67), longevity is a diminishing return on "more yesterdays than tomorrows".

Well, that definitely wasn't so in my case! Having double-checked the correspondence I had with DWP at the time of my claim, I can confirm that I am, indeed, being paid on the basis of the April 2015 Basic Pension weekly rate of £115.95.

That said, though, maybe things have, indeed, now changed as a result of all the various changes which have taken place on the State Pension front over the past 9 years??

The following link might contain useful info for the OP:

    https://www.gov.uk/deferring-state-pension

EDIT: I see that @Polar Bear has already provided this link!

My quotes were from that link.

Certainly when I inquired about it, when my eligibility for UK State Pension started in March 2023, I was informed that even if I deferred, it would revert to the amount per week at the date of eligibility. So yes, maybe things changed since you deferred, as supported in the text of the links I copied.

As alluded to by @Polar Bear, a particular advantage to those of us living in LOS of doing this is that your State Pension could then be frozen at a higher rate than would otherwise have been the case had you claimed when you first became eligible. For instance, even though I became eligible in August 2014 I delayed claiming until April 2015 so as to get at least 1 triple lock increase under my belt!

Not so, if you live in Thailand, and you claim you are not resident of UK. As far as I can see, it remains locked at the date you became eligible:

    Quote

    Annual increases

After you claim your State Pension, the extra amount you get because you deferred will usually increase each year based on the Consumer Price Index. It will not increase for some people who live abroad.

    Quote

    f you move abroad

If you move to any of the countries in this list, the rules for deferring are the same as in the UK:

If you move to a country that is not in the list, the extra payment you get will stay the same. It will not go up or down over time.

    For myself I speculate;-

    Under 65

      60000THB (personal allowance)

    150000THB (nil tax band)

70000THB (Taxed only in UK. Gov pension)

The above all net of tax, based on actual  remittance, landing in the Thai Bank Account.

Above 65 can add 190000 old age allowance!

Then there is the 50% of pension deductible (amongst others ) up to 100k Baht.

So for me generally, I think

    380k THB Under 65

    570k THB Over 65.

Additionally, savings before 1st Jan 2024, That you can prove

Additionally savings principle created from earnings etc whilst not Thai Tax resident ongoing years

Additionally the principle arising from inheritance if isolated, but generally as Thai IHT allowance is reasonably high.

But it will all be down to your own personal circumstance, that's where reading the tax guide may help you.

Out with your question peramiters, there is the 5% tax band which would add another 142k THB net, quite painlessly.

Would not be worth getting into DTA complexity, except for the 'only taxed in UK' aspect of my small Gov pension, until remitting a more substantial amount.  " yes I can prove pensions, but only sending my .Gov pension and savings currently" if asked.

All very approx, counted on fingers and toes

Can you help me out with what I'm missing.

I'm over 65 and I come to a figure of THB500k non taxable:

    60k Personal Care Allowance

100k (up to) Pension Income Allowance

    190k Over 65

    150k Zero-rated

    500k Total

    ....what's the additional 70k?

    Thanks.

I’d be first to agree with having alcohol sales between two & Five!

During my day ive done all manner of mind altering chemicals and much more in the USA, Jsyk.

Thailands Government has  a right to rethink mind altering Weed, especially when it comes to kids.

Then we agree. But the correlation between control and kids is a stretch, IMO. I do however think that the initial rollout of the cannabis decriminalisation here was ill-conceived, in that there is no regulation on the strength and measurement of THC content available. That is the bit they needed to get right first. But it would have required planning and a means to test. Just as with alcohol being at a maximum of 40% proof, in the case of cannabis, it's dangerously unregulated. One shop I've bought from would only sell CBD products, another THC, and the gummies were far too strong, even in miniscule quantities. A spliff from another shop that someone brought one evening, had me in the death throes after one drag. I wouldn't go anywhere near it again here.

Very little concern for the children who are the ones who suffer from the negative consequences of weed in this society that cant even regulate

    proper road rules!

In case you didnt notice the Government wants to shut weed down because of the probable effects it will have on their kids.

"Without the law to regulate cannabis it will be misused," Cholnan said on Wednesday, referring to recreational use. "The misuse of cannabis has a negative impact on Thai children," he added. "In the long run it could lead to other drugs."

Bit like the alcohol sales hours then. Close sales window during 2pm to 5pm because kids come out of school, and in every other country in the world, kids automatically head to the off licence for their hooch.

He may be telling the French what the French want to hear. The French (a timorous lot with no balls nowadays alas) are "worried" about cannabis liberalisation in Germany too. The difference is, the German premier is not going to promise re-criminalisation on a French channel just so that the French give him kudos.

What we need is more major countries pulling the plug on prohibition so that prohibition countries feel increasingly isolated.

Turps is an oily solvent so is likely not to work well. Washing with soap and water or window cleaner is unlikely to be strong enough a degreaser so again is likely to be effective.

Bite the bullet and use a real degreaser as posted above.

The oil is captured by the frosted glass and needs proper degreasing.

The spidermen are still in situ, (well not as I write), but they will have a go tomorrow. They've already had several.

No need to do that. Before going to all that bother you should try various other cleaning agents on the windows. The agents are, in general order of aggressiveness, pure alcohol (easily and cheaply available), acetone  (easily and cheaply available from pharmacies), AAA thinner, one of the other thinners for oil based paints . One of these is likely to clean the oily residue of the windows.

Thank you. I have passed the information on. They have certainly tried turps, washed with soap and water, window cleaner etc. This cleaned the window of it's paint, but after rain, streaking marks were left, which never happened previously.

Why do you need to replace the frame? sliding windows can be lifted out quite easily adjusting the rollers up.

I'm not sure I understand the OP's situation.

If it were me, the first thing I'd be inclined to do is to pull the window out of the frame and turn the sandblasted side inward so it never rains on it.  And if you do splash anything on it, it's a simple cleanup job not not requiring the services of Spiderman.

I'm also a fan of a frosted vinyl film instead of frosted (sandblasted) glass.  Again, on the inside.  So it's easy to scrape the old film off with a razor scraper every 5 years or so.  With the added benefit that you can get a different pattern and/or color film if you're feeling artistic.

In either situation I need a company in Bangkok that does one of these.

I actually like the mirrored effect of the shiny side on the inside, as it's how the other frosted glass pieces are in the kitchen.

And as it is sandblasted, the vinyl alternative doesn't arise.

Again, if anyone can recommend a window fitter in Bangkok, (even if to remove the pieces and to replace the glass), please let me know.

  11. My kitchen window which was newly installed in 2020 had some paint dripping on it during the repainting of the condo. The outside is sandblasted, and the company cleaned with turpentine, so that now when it rains it leaves streaks.

Need to replace glass (and frame).

Any replacements company in Bangkok that anyone can recommend?

"Qatar Airways - what happened to them?"

(Partial) answer: Nothing happened to the airline directly but now that the World Athletic C'ships and the football WC have moved on, Qatar has no need to try and impress. Consequently, services on the State airline have deteriorated.

I'm sure there's something in that. I flew on them in October 2022 ahead of the World Cup, and there had been a hiatus between that trip and my previous one, due to covid. Even in October 2022, despite trying to impress, they were woefully short of their previous levels of service in Business, which I have enjoyed and previously lauded, over the preceding 10 years. Anyway, they slipped off their perch as the Best Airline to Best in Business, but I guess Skytrax is bought and paid for, so it's all a bit meaningless.

All done. I had an SG VPN on and the JAL website was much for navigable, (than even the Japanese site). Go figure.

@gearbox Thank you. I managed to get through and thought I was about to book, but they've asked me to come back and try again in 2 hours, as they have an IT glitch🤨

Initially they asked me to do what I have already done....go and make the booking request on their website. Not sure we wont go back to that rigmarole again, which is a complete waste of time and effort.

The Avios points (77,500 each) come with a service fee of THB14700 each.

    @gearbox

I am indebted to you for your advice to use the Live Chat facility. Was going along swimmingly yesterday until they had an IT glitch. Then couldn't get back on Live Chat until today, and spent 4 hours booking 2 flights, (using 2 laptops for the two of us), and we successfully managed to book JAL with Avios points (plus the fees) from Qatar. The Live Chat went down in the middle of the process, but everything confirmed, except now I need to check the JAL site for booking, (which is not yet showing), and to select seats. When/if that happens, I will proceed with the unrefundable accommodation bookings.

A major palaver, and frankly not one I will undertake again. Only use Avios on Qatar or BA, not any of their partner airlines, as the system is simply not geared to it.

Yup... We just had a right old song and dance trying to get Air-mile Seats with TG.

3 of us... BUT... some flights did not have 3 seats available... so we've had to mess about with what we can get at what times etc..

We ended up outbound with 2 Air-miles Seats... And a regular Ticket paid for with Miles+Cash... and then a return with 3 Air-miles seats.

It was a lot of messing about...  as the availability shown on the TG Website is not quite the same as that shown with the call centre.

1 hour on the phone for something which takes 10mins with Emirates !!

So.. we could only get the Air-miles seats over the phone...

And I could only get the 1 way regular ticket with Cash+Miles online....

Just an awful lot of faffing around... in total with taxes etc it was still 30,000 baht for 3 return tickets BKK to Japan.

It just doesn't need to be this awkward - its as if the airlines want to present the 'facade' that its all giving and shares with other airlines etc, but they really don't want to so have no interest in making the process seamless.

Yes, it is a protracted process to make it as unattractive as possible. To put it bluntly, it is a complete con. If the airlines don't want to give reward miles, just drop it, and stop pretending it's a benefit.

Same...   When I fly Buisness Class (which seems to be more rarely these days)... I used fly at 2am (already knackered and not hungry)..

I'd just drop a sleeping tablet and ask the Flight Attendant to wake me up as late as possible with a coffee...

....as soon as the seatbelt sign is off, I'm horizontal and asleep a few mins later...

No need for food etc... I just want to lie flat, sleep and have the flight pass as quickly as possible - IMO that the best way to fly.

    Absolutely agree.
