It’s a scam but not much can be done if not regulated. Basically they are trying to recover the 3% visa and Mastercard are charging them.
....which I thought these card companies specifically discouraged.

I think you will need 2 letters of residency. Interesting if you can use twice.
Doubtless. My thinking was too logical.

Yes return old DL.
Went today very quick and easy.... I watched the video before hand... Showed the QR code which I saved on my phone.
4 little tests, color of traffic lights, depth of perception, and peripheral vision, and brake test.
505THB 5 years
Done in less than 2 hours. 👍
Thanks to you and Kh Benq. Will watch the vdo and get the QR code.
The other question that sprang to mind today is whether I can use my certificate of residency from IMM for both Thai DL renewal and International Driving Permit (IDP), if I apply for both on the same day. I only have 1 original, but wonder whether it would work for 2 things. IDP also seems to require an original letter/certificate. Sounds too simple and logical, but I might try and do it that way. (I'm going to Japan in May and want to drive, but Thai DL requires IDP.)

I will report back on the 13th.
Thanks! I just asked a Thai staff member here. He says for renewal before expiry of 5 year DL, (which I am), no need for oral question. Also he said no need for form completion, just return old (existing) DL.
(But this may only be for Thais.)
Anyway, I await your report. I was planning on going tomorrow, but my Certificate of Residence will not be available until Wednesday; I already have the Medical Certificate.
As far as I understand it, we only have to do the nonsensical antediluvian tests with wooden sticks etc.

As others have stated, cataract surgery does not require an overnight stay. However, having had both mine done, first at Rutnin Eye (Bangkok) where the anesthetic procedure caused hemorrhaging, (needle into the eye), I still went home to recover the same day, and administered the requisite drops until I went for a follow up the next week. Given my experience I then had the second eye surgery performed at Samitivej Hospital (Bangkok) with drops anesthetic and went home afterwards. I was picked up by my partner both times, and managed the washing (shower) without getting water anywhere near my eyes. The prices you are quoted seem very reasonable. Rutnin was around THB140,000 and Samitivej around THB75,000 (both eyes normal lenses).
My straightforward experience at Samitivej is the norm for these procedures, (as everyone kept telling me before the horror show at the first surgery).
Happily everything is OK in both eyes now, and the difference in my sight is dramatically better; I no longer need long distance glasses.

I will know in three days. The English website of DLT does not help much.
Daughter (Thai) had confirmed I needed it.
If you could let me know, I'd appreciate it. I started to watch the vdo and there was a question about brake distance depending on speed, but the answer only came subsequently, and I got it wrong, so will have to have another go. It is rather protracted and unfocused, but I suppose if required, better to watch it at home, rather than at DLT.

I suggest you do that e-Learning procedure at home and get a QR code.
Can save you sitting at the office and watch some video there.

Quite boring and some very simple questions.
I have just done that in preparation for my 5yr/5yr extension next week.
The page in the URL for private cars says not required for Driving Licence renewal...I think:
It does not apply to obtaining a new driver's license and driving license renewal

Do you need photos for a renewal?

Don't understand their reply but unless I'm mistaken the platform fee is not new and applies only to GrabTaxi. This is Grab's fee on top of the metered fare. For other ride types the fee is wrapped up inside the fixed price that you are quoted.
It was Grab Car Premium on both occasions.

Here's a clue about slow fulfillment:
...how many days has Srettha been behind his desk in Bangkok, or in Thailand, as opposed to abroad, drumming up so-called intangible "business" or non specific invitations to other countries' heads of state or government?
...who is actually running the government?
...why doesn't the foreign minister go off gallivanting?
...why doesn't the transport minister sort out immigration delays at Suvarnabhumi?
...why doesn't the interior minister go to the "Deep South", or to visit Issan, or other photo ops up and down the country?
Perhaps the coalition is so fragile it cannot progress one item on the election promises agenda, and Srettha is just keeping the seat warm for the chosen one, and until MFP have been eliminated, before the next general election.

They also added another new fee "platform fee" of THB20 per ride. But since questioning it, they see to have stopped. Their answer was a complete word salad:

Actually after relatively low AQI numbers in Bangkok last week, (around 60-80), today the AQI is back to 130-150.

Cervical spondylosis is a common part of aging. Millions of people globably exist with this degeneration of the bones and disks of the neck. It would also not be a stretch to think that there are people currently behind bars with this condition.
"....not be stretch..." Actually that might be a solution to his problem, as below:
8 minutes ago, Misty said:I had a lot of pain in my neck and right arm during covid. Finally had it checked out, hospital ran some x-rays and said there were signs of degeneration. they thought related to aging.
Ended up working with a physical trainer and added a series of daily stretches to my normal workouts. These helped, but only some.
What really helped (and now have no pain) was starting to do pushups regularly again. Hadn't really done these since army days. Good form with neck straight is obviously important.
I wonder how much of what medicine calls "normal aging degeneration" can be helped in this way.
I too have recently been to have physio at MedPark, (at vast expense), and the stretching exercises have certainly helped. Most of the rest of it is a bit of a racket, as to be expected from the medical hub of the world.

Sorry to be so flippant.
I have Xiomi.
2 smaller ones in the bedrooms, and one large one in the living room.
As to their effectiveness, I have no way of measuring that, but there is a indoor air quality monitor device you can buy on Lazada to measure.

Yes, rather like the telephone kiosks which remained out of service for what seemed/s like a couple of decades.

Thanks, but the cycling is for my partner's back, (slipped disc between L4 & L5). The stationary bikes in our gym are not suitable, as they are a seat variety, (as in you do not lean forward, or stretch the spine). @ricklev seems to have provided a solution for me to check out.

Pun Pun is likely gone forever. I expect the overengineered bike stands will block the sidewalks for a while longer. However, there are some app bikes sitting next to the deserted Pun Pun stand on Rajadamri close to the entrance to the park. You just scan the QR code, set up a payment card and off you go.
I forgot the name of the bike rental app. I walk past there all the time and see them there. They look OK, fairly new. Better than the Pun Pun bikes anyway.
Thanks I just walked up to the park and inquired at the Rama IV entrance opposite U Chu Liang entrance. Some English speaking young Thais directed me towards the Silom MRT station, to which I went. None there. So completing my circuit, I went via Sathorn Road, and noticed two stations, both devoid of bikes and obviously dead....
a case of no pun (pun) intended
So thanks for your suggestion. I will look further, at the area you suggest.

When I have Googled the only information I have found is the "Pun Pun" bike rentals at Lumpini. The website tells me that all the stations to pick up a Pun Pun nearby are "temporarily closed", and it would seem the only one open is at Central World.
Has anyone reading this ever used Pun Pun, and do they have any information to share, such as quality of the bikes, availability, ease of use of the facility etc, (as it seems to rely on the card working on the machine), and I have no idea whether these stations are properly serviced.

I can deal with cancel requests, annoying, but it is what it is - at least they are upfront even with the old broken down excuse, I more despise "coming to you" (auto translate) then they don't move for 15+ minutes in areas with no traffic, in those scenarios I just flag a normal taxi, and call their bluff, I turn off location permission for the app so they can't see my location as I move away in a normal taxi or alternative app (under Privacy and Security), let the bluff ride, eventually they move, then I wait until they are within 100 meters, then cancel and swallow the 15baht fee. It's petty but if they don't even attempt to communicate I feel no guilt.
THB52 charged to me this morning, when I cancelled because "too far away".....(more than 10 minutes).
Same reply for below. It's a scam. They seem to be getting more creative at little rip offs here and there.
On 2/7/2024 at 2:02 PM, richard_smith237 said:The drivers accept the ride... then have no intention of taking the ride, so instead of contacting you and asking you to cancel... (which you can report), they just 'wait you out' and hope you will cancel for a different reason (i.e. driver too far away etc or something similar)... then they are free to take the 'next ride' in the hope its to a destination they prefer.

One possible answer is the government is projecting into the future, the potential impact on Thailand of a change in US policy after the elections. Another possible angle is that we don't have sight of some key data or facts that might influence our view.
Yes, we are in agreement on limited or no impact on the economy, but the impact on the Thai property market for foreign investors may be an issue, (depending on other factors, obviously). But with uncertainty about implications, it is likely to put some people off; I'm assuming this from what I've read, but my mind is muddled by the back and forth, and whether an inward remittance for property investment would be subject to the highest rate of tax of 35%. Certainly I know of an investor who was going to pay around THB50m for a condo, which is now in abeyance, until there is more clarity. With such an oversupplied market, it may be a beneficial delay, but then, to revisit another unknown, but speculated factor, the state of the economy, and the political risk, which could become a major factor in the coming months.

Grab - what happened?

Yup, not a lot of money. But I'd rather have it than Grab. Their new add on charges are costing them a lot more in reputational cost than the credit card fee and the "platform fee", (which seemed to only be effected 2 times).
