  1. Thank you Tanoshi for the link.  I still have my original BB ATM cards from 1995.  They still work in tandem with the Be1st debit cards I have. The Visa Debit/ATM network is part of the Plus system of ATMs worldwide. Mastercard uses Cirrus.  Especially travelling overseas you will need Visa for charges and ATM withdrawals.  So after these cards expire,  I suppose I will open another account with a bank that offers Visa debit.  This causes great consternation.  If it ain't broke,  don't try and fix it, as they say.

  2. You will get 1 percent on a savings account and in a fixed account you will get 1.5- 2.0 percent.

So you will get 2000 per 3 months on saving and you will get 3000-4000 on a fixed deposit.

Best I can tell.  I am going to open a couple fixed deposit accounts so all time periods will cover me for the 3 months seasoning requirement. .ie. 2 six month deposits 6 months apart.  Or 2 one year deposits six months apart.

  3. I have heard from an actual example that a three month fixed deposit will not qualify as the time the money is in the account and earning interest is less than three months.   Neither will they accept it on the maturity date because you are starting at day zero.  The money has already been in there 3 months and you are starting fresh from the beginning of the maturity cycle.

  4. This might provide some clarification.    My friend has a one year fixed deposit.  The amount is above  800,000 Baht.  His extension stamp finishes on August 31, The amount in the fixed deposit account must be at least three months from the last MATURITY date.  It doesn't matter if you have had the account for 5 or 10years, the only things that matter are the amount and the time from the last maturity date. At least three months.

  5. When you submitted your papers did they take your photocopy of the Laos entry stamp?

This really sounds like a scam for the guys outside to make extra money by doing photocopies. There no indication on the Laos Consulate website about the requirement. How would the guys next to you in the line know whether this is a requirement or not?

The lady at the desk took all the documents. The guys in the line had a friend who got the visa a few days before. He said that he needed to submit the copy of the Lao entry stamp, otherwise the consulate wouldn't take his documents.

  6. Thx Maestro, actually it is stamped 'admitted until 22 Mar 2009' which is this sunday, is immigration open Saturday? Am i supposed to go on the date stamped? Can i just go tomrow (Friday 20th) and still get the extension until 20 APR 2009?

Yes you must go today (Thurs) or tommorrow (Fri) Your 30 day extension will be added to your admitted to stay date.

You will not loose any days. This should take you up to 21st April.

Hi, I got the double entry tourist visa with no charge from the Thai Consulate. I arrived at 7:20 a.m. on Tuesday. There were 10 people in front of me at that time. An elderly Lao gentleman came up to me and asked me if I had all the proper documents, photos, etc. He said you also needed a copy of the Lao entry stamp in your passport. I didn't have this so I asked a couple of guys in the line and they confirmed that you did indeed need to show the stamp. This was my third trip to Vientiane and had never heard this before so was suprised. I reluctantly gave the man my passport to go make a copy of this page. After 5 minutes he returned and handed my passport back to me. Total charge was 40 Baht.

At 8:30 went in through the gate and got my number which was 32. I had checked x 2 next to visa type requested, but she asked me again as I had "tourist" written next to Purpose of visit. So she marked x 2 next to this also. After that I waited for my number to be called in the adjacent room and received the receipt at 9:05 and was finished. There was a big crowd the next day but we all managed to get in, get a number to pick up our passports, and wait inside. It took approximately 40 minutes to get the passport. It seemed the old consulate system with no numbers was quicker when retrieving your passport, but not necessarily so when submitting your passport.

  7. With a birth certificate her mother can get a border pass for the child. Or possibibly the housbook that the child is registered in. Both would be best.

The mother likes to take the express bus from her town directly to the center of Vientiane. They just stamp her passport at the bridge. So I guess they will need to stop at the shop in Nong Khai to get the child a border pass. That would be out of the way for them. Any other way to get the border pass??

  8. Yes, got the 30 day extension. So it is just a matter of leaving the country and coming back in before the enter before date for the second entry. Thanks.

I will soon be going out of the country since the first entry of my double entry visa is almost

finished. Once you pass through Thai immigration at the Thai-Lao friendship bridge on your way out of the country, do you actually have to enter Laos before you return to make the 2nd entry valid?? Or can you just walk across the street and enter Thailand again without ever having gone into Laos?? Just wondering as this would make things quite a bit easier.

Yes you have to enter Laos. You will need to get a visa on arrival there. Photo, 1500 baht or $35.

Did you get a 30 extension for your tourist entry? If not that would delay your trip across border.

  10. Hi all,

I'm going to be doing a visa run this week to Vientiane and I'm rather excited as it'll be my first time in Laos as I've gone to Penang in the past. I've read through this entire thread in the last few hours, a lot of great info - thanks to all who shared!

I was wondering if anybody would have a guesthouse or hotel that they'd recommend in Vientiane? My budget is from 500 BHT - 1,000 BHT though cheaper is always better. I guess I fall into the flash packer category of traveler, what I prefer in a room is quiet, air con, clean, and secure. Doesn't have to be fancy at all.

    Thanks for any advice!

I've stayed at Aroon Residence near the embassy, The Riverine on the river, and I've also heard Vayakorn is a great questhouse. All about in your price range.
