  1. Last November I faced the same dilemma, and researched my options. Selected my local government hospital in central Sukhothai. Regular open surgery was the procedure undertaken. 1 nights stay in private room and home next day. 14,000 baht total damage. Nothing but praise for all staff from beginning to end, plus the final result.  Initial assessment on Monday -> under the knife Thursday-> Home on Friday.

Private hospital (literally across the street) quoted 50,000 and would have included the very same procedure and surgeon.

I even considered using the UK NHS and found I had a 58 week wait.

What did the phone call show up as I don't keep my phone with me so if my phone shows a missed call I would know who it was. I'd prefer they send me a sms or email

Caller ID just showed a unknown mobile number. I can't be certain if it was a central administration office...or whether my details where just handed over to my local hospital to instigate the contact (Its the local government hospital which has no other records of me).

Advise then is to keep mobiles handy....and answer all calls.  Unknown  how vigilant the process will be to attempt re-contacting persons after a number of missed calls.  Wouldn't want to be confronted with the "Sorry...Pfizer is all used now, I tried calling you 3 tiimes....Sinovac okay for you now?"

    Interesting....No e-mail or SMS notification....just a friendly phone call. (Registered expatvac.co.th 1st August)

  4. Sukhothai does now have it's very own immigration office, therefore negating the need to undertake the perilous journey to Mae Sot.

Staff are friendly and helpful, and will efficiently process you visa renewals

    Good luck with the move

  5. The Immigration office assigned to Sukhothai province is in Tak at the Mae Sot / Myawaddy border post.

I have found the Immigration officials there to be friendly and efficient. I have never seen the place busy, and have never queued for more than 10 minutes for extensions etc. 90 day reports are usually turned around within 10 days.

The only downside is the “white knuckle ride” through the mountains to get there. The road itself is much improved over recent years, but the standard of driving has not.

Minivans leave from Sukhothai bus station taking about 1 hour 45 minutes to do the trip, but they drive like maniacs.

Put an extra garland around your rear view mirror before you set off and trust in Lord Buddha to get you there and back in one piece.

  6. Take it easy on how much you gamble on a result, or who you taunt…..

Two sorry stories from UK’s Daily Mirror Newspaper….

Arsenal fan with three wives loses his HOUSE after betting on Manchester United clash

An Arsenal fan has lost his HOUSE after betting that the Gunners would beat Manchester United at the weekend.

Henry Dhabasani, who has three wives and five children, made a bet with friend Rashid Yiga that Arsenal would beat the Premier League champions.

The price of the wager? Dhabasani put his family home on the line, while Yiga staked his Toyota Premio car, plus his WIFE.

The wager was put in writing by the pair and was reportedly witnessed by community leaders in the town of Iganga in eastern Ugandan.

The Ugandan Observer reports that following the match, which Arsenal lost 1-0, a group of Manchester United fans stormed Dhabasani's house and kicked his wives and children out of their home.

It's not the first time the outcome of an Arsenal match has had extreme consequences this season.

After Arsenal's victory over Liverpool, a policeman in Durban, South Africa, shot his friend in the chest after being taunted over the Reds' 2-0 defeat. ….

Policeman SHOT friend in chest over Liverpool taunts following defeat to Arsenal

A policeman was arrested after allegedly shooting a friend in a furious row over Saturday’s Premier League match between Arsenal and Liverpool.

The cop, who has not been named, is a Liverpool fan and was livid when taunted over his side’s 2-0 defeat.

Eyewitnesses said he pulled out his gun and shot his pal in the chest.

The shocking incident happened in Durban, South Africa minutes after the game had finished.

A group of friends were enjoying a barbecue while watching the match but many of them were Man Utd fans who taunted the police captain over the result.

One witness said he then pulled out a gun shouted “Manchester United – who?” and fired a shot.

His friend collapsed to the floor with blood pouring from a wound. He was taken to hospital with injuries to his lung and liver.

The policeman was arrested and charged with attempted murder. He later complained of feeling unwell and was admitted to hospital, where he is still under police guard.

  7. I have just been through a similar experience. Details are at my posting here: http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/topic/649110-report-exchange-tourist-visa-to-non-immigrant-marriage-form-tm86/

It essentially is a 4 step process

1 Obtain tourist visa from home country.

2 Arrive in Thailand and follow Affirmation of freedom to marry process at your embassy, arrange document translation, and then legalization at MFA (Ministry of Foreign Affairs at Bangkok Chaengwattana. Set up a bank account and deposit minimum 400,000 baht.

3 Go through the marriage process at your wife’s local amphur office. Documents needed are your passport, your Affirmation of freedom to marry documents, your wife’s ID card and blue house registration books.

4 With around 20 days remaining on your tourist visa follow the APPLICATION FOR CHANGE OF VISA process (Form TM86).

"Not working" is not and issue when completing Affirmation Freedom to Marry documents. You just need to enter details on your previous employment or trade, Writing "Unemployed" and income as "Nil" should be avoided.

    Good luck with it!

  8. I have read multiple threads from members requesting info on converting a Tourist Visa to a non –immigrant visa in country rather than applying directly for the non-immigrant visa in your home country or perhaps a neighboring country.

This is a common scenario for those people (like me) wishing to arrive in Thailand, get married, and then stay for an extended period without exiting.

Although replies are always informative and helpful, I could not find a single posting of an up-to-date experience with details of all necessary requirements.

This is my story on the “Change of Visa Application (Form TM86)” process to follow. Hoping it helps readers in similar circumstances.

With 19 days remaining on my current tourist visa, I arrived at Bangkok Chaengwattana immigration office on Monday lunchtime, and was handed a ticket for the C1 queue.

Documents I prepared and brought with me where:-

Completed form TM86 (APPLICATION FOR CHANGE OF VISA) (NB Print Double Sided!! Not 2 Single sided sheets!!)

Photocopy of passport pages with following pages

    - front page showing name / surname / Passport No., etc.

    - current visa

    - last entry stamp of immigration

    - last extension of visa

    Photocopy of departure card TM.6

    4 X 6 cm photograph.

    Application fee of 2,000 baht.

    - Copy of translated and legalized Affirmation Freedom to Marry documents.

    - Copy of marriage Certificate (Kor Ror.2).

    - Copy of marriage Registration Papers (Kor Ror.3).

Copy of I.D. card and house registration papers of the Thai national- Wife to sign both copies.

4 Photos mounted on A4 of couple inside house.

4 Photos mounted on A4 of couple outside house.

2x Map showing directions to house.

Letter from bank confirming 400,000 baht in account.

Copy bank passbook showing 400,000 baht in account.

    ** Remember use BLUE pen.

** Remember to sign each photocopied page (this is your certification that the photocopy is a true copy of the original), and Thai Wife to sign documents such as ID card, blue book, marriage documentation and countersign each photo too.

** Remember to bring all original documents too.

After around an hour of waiting, I was seen by the immigration officer. Paperwork was in order except that the “Letter from bank confirming 400,000 baht in account” was not required and was handed straight back to me. Also, I was requested to use Bangkok Bank ATM and passbook update machine downstairs and re-photocopy.

Immigration officer once satisfied hands me a blue receipt, and asked me to return to Bangkok Chaengwattana in 10 days’ time.

At the second visit in 10 days, the immigration front desk again gave me a ticket for the C1 queue, but explained that I do not need to take a seat and wait. I should go straight to the officer’s desk at C12. At C12 the immigration officer see’s that you are holding the blue receipt from previously and takes your passport and informs you to take a seat. 10 minutes waiting and you are handed back your passport with a 90 Non Immigrant O visa stamped inside. You are then free to use your local Immigration Office to pursue then 1 year extension thereafter.

This was my first occasion dealing with Immigration officials (other than Suvarnabhumi arrivals), and found the process to be satisfactory. As echoed in many threads, dress smartly, remain polite, and answer any questions clearly and succinctly. Hoping for a similar level of service from my local office in approx. 2 months time.

  9. The golden rule is that the price of any asset is the price that the purchaser is willing to pay, even more so in rural Thailand. Comparisons to neighboring land, or even land that your best friends aunties cousins work colleague once heard about are not viable.

From 2010, this older classified appears to be offering 36 Rai in Thung Saliam at 15,000 per rai. http://www.ddproperty.com/en/property/land-in-thung-saliam-sukhothai-71538

Usual factors such as good road access, the availability of electricity + water, and even more prominent now, the susceptibility to flooding, affect the potential sale price. Not to mention how prices often sky rocket if it becomes known that a rich farang is in town and ready to splash the cash.

Of course, the all-important paperwork (land title and chanote) need to be in order before taking any serious decisions.

Good luck with it, however you choose to progress…..

  10. Just curious, are you a Brit or Dutch or something else entirely?

I'm a Brit "W London", now living in Amsterdam, and holiday regular in Sukhothai...hence the interest

dont worry about kel mate he,s a sad manc lol...but a good pisshead :D where in sukhothai do you stay..ill be back 5th april we should meet up for a beer or two :D:)

I stay just 1 click from Sukhothai town center, and my past footie watching experiences in around town have been "eventful" to say the least. We can arrange a meet once I finalize my plans..

Any directions for "Bridge Bar", like I said earlier, "Shed Bar" was not what I was hoping for

Bad news about Ashley Cole today, for both Chels. and England, Oh well, at least it'll give him time to mull over his driving ban for going at 104mph in his Lamborghini down the in A3 Kingston

  12. Hi Eddie,

I’ll be in Sukhothai for the title run-in during April-May, and am hoping England’s number 1 can get his head straight by then…

Can you post directions to Bridge Bar? My experience of watching prem. footy in Sukhothai has been underwhelming so far and have been seeking a suitable watering-hole. In fact I heard of “Shed Bar” once and it really got my hopes of for meeting like-minded people….but in fact it really did just turn out to be “just a shed” :)

    Cheers!

Further Google searches will provide useful reviews via "tripadvisor.com" etc to assist your choice.

Sukhothai old town slows down quite quickly after dark so there is not much else to do other than enjoy a relaxing meal and perhaps a drink or two.

Sukhothai literally translates to "dawn of happiness", and it is recommended to rise early and visit the Buddha statues at the historical park in the cooler early morning where they can take on a mysterious glow in the dawn sunrise.

Rent a bike nearby to get around and explore a little further. The surrounding area has many more temples / sites etc to see.

I find the locals to be friendly, and the area to be safe...so just go ahead and relax & enjoy.

Bank repossessions can generally offer a reasonably "secure" route for a land/property purchase as the bank will hold the necessary title deeds and land registration papers etc, therefore there should be no doubts as to ownerships or outstanding secured loans etc. Although when dealing with bank repossessions there is less opportunity to negotuate price.

    Good luck with it!

  15. In regard to the previously mentioned case of the son of the former Miss Thailand who due to his aggressive driving killed one and injured three others.

    From today’s (January 30th) Bangkok post….

"The court ordered him to pay 2 million baht for relatives of the dead woman, and 800,000 baht for two of the injured people.

Mr Kanpithak or Mu Ham, 21, is the son of the former Miss Thailand, Sawinee and Kan-anek Patchimsawat, and a nephew of retired deputy police Chief Ukrit Patchimsawat.

Mr Kanpithak was also accused of smashing a rock in the face of bus driver Sathaporn Arunsiri near Sukhumvit Soi 26, after his car was involved in a minor incident with the bus."

So a 15 year jail sentence, reduced to 10 years with the compensation mentioned makes the 14.5 million mentioned by the OP as the compensation been sought in his case is highly unreasonable.

This area tends to be "backpacker" country and so there are some reviews (good and bad) at some of the "travelblog" type websites

This are is also a nice stop-overt for those doing a visa run to Mae Sot. Route 1090 used to be known as "Death Highway" due to the Guerrilla (not gorilla :o ) activity leading up until the 1980's. But lives are still lost due to brake failures on the steep and treacherous winding roads through the incredible mountain scenery.

I cannot recommend any myself as I have only passed though. I do plan on exploring further in future.

  17. The Central region appears to be suffereing markedly low tempretures this cool season.

Sukhothai provide blankets to cold weather victims

Sukhothai provincial officials have distributed warm blankets to cold weather victims in the concerned areas.

Today (January 21), Mr. Choeisak Thalathee (เชยศักดิ์ ถาละถี), Ban Kluai mayor, presided over the event to distribute blankets in Ban Kluay municipal district, Sukhothai province. Ban Kluay’s local residents have currently been affected by extreme cold weather conditions as the temperature has dropped down to 10 degree Celsius. The Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM) thus decided to declare Sukhothai province as emergency zone due to the high air pressure which has been dominating the northern region of Thailand. Sukhothai Governor Mr. Yothin Samutkhiri (โยธินศร์ สมุทรคีรีจ์) and President of Sukhothai Administration Organization Mr. Manu Phukprasert (มนู พุกประเสริฐ), had already provided 1,000 blankets to the affected residents at this point.

Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn provides blankets to cold-affected victims in Tak province.

Tak Governor, Mr. Khomsan Ekkachai (คมสันต์ เอกชัย) announced today (January 22) that, Her Royal Highness Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn has been concerned over Tak residents who have been suffering from extreme cold weather conditions. In response, Deputy Private Secretary and groups had decided to distribute 400 blankets that were graciously granted by HRH Princess Maha Chakri Sirindhorn to the affected residents at Ban Um Wab School and Ban Hin Lad – Na Hai School of Sam Ngao district, Tak province.

Thus far, 9 districts of Tak province have still been affected by severe cold weather conditions with less than 15 degree Celsius in temperature, while affecting more than 130,000 residents. Meanwhile, residents in Mueang Tak, Wang Chao, Sam Ngao, Ban Tak, Mae Ramat, and Phop Phra districts also have been enduring with the drought.

Tak officials have consistently been providing assistance to the locals in affected areas at this point.

  18. Niranut, thanks for reporting back with your findings.

Too commonly threads are started with a question raised, and a number of answers provided, but the true outcome is not explained.

You have provided some really useful info on availability and prices for appliances around your area.

I too will be seeking similar appliances and furnishings in the middle of next year. It is a dilemma as to whether to spend time in Bangkok where the choice is greater and arranging delivery / transport myself, or to source items locally within the central region with choice likely to be limited, but delivery and installations easier with the price trade-off unknown.

I imagine I'll start a similar thread nearer the time.

    Again thanks.....

    Check http://www.travelfish.org/accommodation/th...i/sukhothai/all for some reviews.

Some are better kept / cleanerthan others, and some offer shared facilities and options for private facilities.

Be aware that with Loy Kratong fast approaching Sukhothai becomes very busy and is often "full" for the week as often places are often booked even 1 year in advance. Becuase of such a high demand in this period, there is commonly a surcharge of perhaps 500-1,000 baht per night on a room, so if you are travelling in this festival period, do ensure you have reservations before travelling, or you may end up having to sleep on the seat of the bike.

    Enjoy your stay....

  20. Japanese POW’s built it, and the American Air Force turned it back into piles of wood.

Interestingly, in an “anorak” kind of way, the Americans used the worlds first ever “smart bomb” to destroy the bridge.

Dropping bombs from thousands of feet in the air, attempting to hit the railroad targets that were only perhaps 4 meters wide was thought to be futile.

So the Americans devised the first "smart" bomb by adding a remote controlled propeller on the bombs that the bomber pilot could manoeuvre with remote control and adjust in flight to help it hit their rightful target.

I recall seeing a documentary on the subject with the first B24 Liberator pilot reporting a direct hit with the very first bomb being dropped smashing through the central span.

    More info at http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Azon

Of course “Smart Weapons” have moved on somewhat since this first incarnation
