My experience changing temporary 2 year license to 5 year license:

No appointment is necessary at Hang Dong Office https://maps.app.goo.gl/Rwy3NZeM5MCf8tYf8

As already mentioned do NOT queue up at the Info window in the middle, but go directly to window 27 for foreigners.

From 2 to 5 year renewal NO test is necessary (but from 5 year to 5 year watch online video and answer simple questions at https://www.dlt-elearning.com/ before showing up at the office).

    No photos are necessary.

    The following documents are required:

1.) Medical Certificate (original and signed copy for car and moto)

2.) Certificate of Residence from Immigration close to Airport 2nd floor (original and signed copy for car and moto)

3.) SIGNED copy of TM30 which usually resides in your passport (2 copies for car and moto)

4.) SIGNED copy of 1st passport page + visa + extension + entry stamp  (2 copies for car and moto)

    5.) Old Trial Driver License(s)

You drop all this together with your passport off at window 27.

You will have to fill out a simple form with name and phone nr for each driver's license.

You are asked to sit down.

Your NAME will be called after a while.

You will be given a print out of your data for the license! CHECK IT - my address was incorrect - they simply took the old license address and not the one from Certificate of Residence.

You make a visual test for color blindness.

    You are given a number.

When the number is called you go to the window specified and pay for your driver's license (205 THB motorcycle, 550 THB car) - cash & promptpay, card with extra charge

You are ushered in to the musical chair room where the photos are taken and at the same time the driver's license is printed and handed to you.

DONE (Total 2 to 3 hours right after their 12-1pm lunch break)

    International Driver's License:

I wanted to get an International License too.

The clerk refused to even talk about it until I had my new Thai licenses in hand.

Then I was told validity was one year, cost for car license500 THB, and I have to specify the country for which the license was valid. Those restrictions were not attractive for me, so I passed.

I hope this will help someone. 🙂

Feb 20th 2024 Thanks, Your post is spot on. I renewed my 9 month expired 25 year car license at Hang Dong this morning unbelievably quickly: Arrived at 7:45 having done the online training video yesterday with the paperwork you listed. Waited with about 20 others until they opened at at about 8:10. showed the printout of the training confirmation with its QR code, was directed to counter 27 and from then on, just as you described except I was out by 8:50 with my new license.  Of note:

    1. 7:30 would be a good time to get there - even a bit later and it may take all morning.
    2. Sitting through the Training Video and taking a screenshot or printout of the confirmation at the finish, is essential or you may have to do it on the day if space is available. (Actually, if you can get past the style, the videos are surprisingly good and emphasize situational awareness, predication and a bunch of good driving habits. Definitely a huge improvement from the past efforts: they even mention rear view mirrors...)
    3. Rajaveh Hospital is good for the medical certificate. Monday at 5pm: 100 baht and took 20 minutes. Parking now much easier there.

    Thanks for the clarification.

In your standard range Dolphin buy did you get the free home/wall charger like listed below for the Dolphin?

I've heard that getting the wall charger when buying a Dolphin might also depend on whether a person is paying cash or financing.    A neighbor of mine who bought an Atto just a week before I bought my Atto told me such.  This was almost 3 weeks ago.

I paid cash - The only mention of the charger was that it was available at a "special price" of about 15k if I recall.  We already have a charger so I wasn't fussed.  I suspect that the extras are likely standard with the Dolphin extended range model.  The 3M window film was priced at 5k.

As Bandersnatch mentioned above, North Star at Thapae Gate is very busy and seems to be selling every car it can lay hands on at the moment (I think the pink SR Dolphin may be an exception!) I see the demonstrators around town a lot.

  3. My comment about the items included with BYD cars was based on purchase of a standard range Dolphin last month at a couple of baht under 700k - can't run into millions for a second car!  Anyway, sorry for the confusion, I should have qualified my statement!

Bandersnatch, That's the model I drove.  It's got a brilliant head-up display - can it show more than just the speed?

Great video  - thanks for sharing.

I really like the BYD seal, but it’s not as practical as an SUV and when I sat in it I found it a bit of a squeeze

The only things that concerned me about the BYD Seal U was sunroof - not sure if there is a sun screen - the Irish guy complained about the heat. Also the acceleration  - 9.6 seconds is ICE car performance, but maybe like the Seal it will come in dual motor variant.

    Stats from the video:

    BYD Seal U

    Honda CRV for comparison
    4,691mm L; 1,855mm W; 1,679mm H; 2,660mm WB

19 inch wheels range WLTP comfort 420km design 500km
    Battery comfort 71.8kWh design 87kWh

    AC 11kW DC comfort 115kW design 140kW
    Heat pump and V2L

I drove the top spec Seal a few weeks ago and liked it a lot.  A bit less spacious than I'd expected, but comfortable and good to drive, at least on the Thapae Gate - Airport Plaza - Chiangmai Land and back to Thapae test drive circuit.  I was told the version I drove had a sub 4 second 0-100 but resisted the temptation to give it a go.  By the way, if you're considering BYD, be aware that their new car promotional prices don't include a wall charger, window film and some of the other enticements that other brands offer.

  5. Wing 41 pass time and I just discovered that my (25 year - no wonder I forgot!) license is now 6 months overdue for renewal.  My wife tells me that they are only issuing 5 year licenses for Thais - does that go for foreigners too?

I can easily get all the paperwork together for the procedure outlined above to do a renewal application at Hang Dong but wondering if Klaimor Hospital is still able to do the medical certificate.

  6. Firstly, the online appointments to get a family/marriage extension seem all taken until about mid September. Was told that the only other option was an early morning walk-in which I suspect will be a long and tiresome process.

Preparing paperwork today- two questions if anyone has recent experience:

Marriage Cert Kor Ror 2 - will last year's do?  was told it was OK last year but seems a bit chancy.
Do they want copies of my blank passport pages?  Had this go either way over the past few years.

  7. I test drove A Neta V about 6 months ago and was quite impressed, given the price.  Have had an MG4 since February and last week my stepson and I went to check out the Neta again.  After almost 5 months (mostly) in love with the MG, I was very impressed with the responsiveness of the Neta infotainment system and the thought they seem to have put into the features.  As you'd expect, the build quality reflects the price to some extent but not quite as much as you'd think.  Neta is giving a 10k baht Lotus voucher in with the 549k price until the end of the month and the dealer says he expects the government subsidy to end or be reduced by November.
We are giving this some thought as a second (city) car and I'd like to hear the opinions of anyone who's had one for a while.

  8. High quality Quad HD Viofo A119 v3 dashcam that Dashcamtalk rates as "Best Bang For The Buck". See picture for full specs or check out the many reviews on YouTube.  A reliable dashcam provides evidence for the police, your insurer and others should you be in an accident. Many insurance companies will offer you a discount when you fit one, and knowing you can prove blame in a dispute brings peace of mind whenever you drive. This is one of the best affordable cameras on the market. Video samples available on request.

    ·         Sony Starvis 5MP sensor

    ·         Very good video quality day or night

    ·         Advanced parking mode (requires hard wiring rather than just connecting via the 12v lighter socket)

    ·         GPS Logger and Motion Detection (videos can be viewed showing map position average speed etc.)

    ·         Capacitor Powered (no batteries to fail in Thailand's heat)

    ·         Quick release GPS mount and 12v car connector.

    ·         Good support from Viofo and I can recommended installers in Chiang Mai and Bangkok.

The current price online is 3 - 4,000 baht.  Buy mine for 2750 (price firm)

  9. Very good explanation Crossy.  Thanks as ever ????

We're just at the point of having a contractor supply and install a Hybrid system sufficient to offset our monthly bills (three phase: around 3,500 bht) and provide charging of a (they told me today) soon-to-arrive MG4.  From the prices I've seen so far it looks like about an 8 year payback (depending on future electricity prices) although I hope that if the job is done properly the value of the house will improve and provide some compensation.

Planning to visit one of the two Fully Charged Live Shows when I'm over in England this April/May.  If the events are anywhere as good as their YouTube channels it will be very interesting.

I think you will find that both the X and the D models here in Thailand have the standard range ( 51 kWh ) battery.

In the U.K. the SE (D) is available in standard range and SE (D) and Trophy (X)  available in extended range .

“ The MG4 is priced at 869,000 Baht for the D variant and 969,000 Baht for the X variant.
It comes with a 51kWh lithium battery powering a rear-mounted motor developing 170hp and 250Nm The MG4 has a range of 425kms (NEDC) or 350kms (WLTP).
It is built from MG’s new Nebula Pure Electric Platform and offers sporty handling, thanks to a low center of gravity, short overhangs and a 50-50 front-rear weight distribution.
Distributor MG Thailand recently invited the Thai media for a short drive opportunity for the MG4 X variant at the Pathumthani Speedway. “

The difference between X and D variants is D lacks:

Sat Nav, rear spoiler, 360 degrees camera, access to the iSmart app and voice controls , wireless charger, two tone interior, availability in Brighton Blue amongst other things.

The X version on sale here is a good looking car at a great price and the RWD/ LFP battery combination gives an excellent 50/50 weight distribution.

Don’t get me wrong, it’s second on my list of EV’s that I would like to buy, if the extended range battery was available here it could be first.

Thanks for the info.  Nowhere could I find the battery comparison for Thailand but the overall higher specs were the main deciding factor for me so I'm not disappointed that both D and X are the same size.

  11. Ordered and paid a deposit on an MG4 (extended range) which I'm hoping to see in February and now planning the solar setup to support it (and possibly another BEV in due course) as well as run the house for about 8 hours in the evening and send any surplus back to the grid.  Am I right in thinking that this requires what is termed a Hybrid system here in Thailand?

I've been an EV enthusiast for some time but not yet got to grips sufficiently with solar so any advice would be much appreciated.

  12. OK, so it's a year on, but the first (as far as I know) EGAT Elex charging station has appeared in Chiang Mai city, on Huay Kaew road near to Maya mall. This one seems to be BMW branded so I guess they're selling ad space as well as power. Not yet operational by the look of it but along with the units sprouting up in every other PTT station it's a definite step in the right direction.  I've now got an MG4 on order and starting the adventure into covering the house in solar panels so 2023 looks like being interesting.  Any thoughts on how feasible a Chiang Mai - Surin trip might be in early March?

  13. It wasn't the original issue, I think I probably overtightened while refitting the cartridge (I dissembled it completely and now wish I hadn't as it's a so-and-so to put back together ????  )

I've superglued it and now going to have another go at installation.  Kerox is a major valve manufacturer based in Hungary, by the way. The cartridge was decent quality but got very stiff to operate after eight years of service as they all tend to do.  Thanks for the advice anyway.
