  1. I'm on my 3rd ThinkPad; the first one being a 2000 model A20P, strong as a tank and still works like new, but with a P3 750 processor, I can't do much with it so I use it primarily for downloading movies and other programming from torrent sites. I replaced it with a T40p, Pentium M 1.6Ghz processor, great computer until it died. I still don't know what is wrong with it; it just continuously shuts down by itself. It seems that the T40 series had motherboard problems especially with proper soldering of the GPU. Last year, during my vacation trip to the US, I bought my first Lenova, a T61, and it seems to have the same build quality of past IBM's except that I'm not so satisfied with the display quality. It has backlighting leakage, visible on a blank screen and during normal usage, the display screen is not as bright as past IBM's and particularly the one Dell laptop I had previously owned. Battery life is also not that good.

I don't know much about the Y series, but I think it is part of a special packaging to keep the price down.

  2. This might be a stupid question, but what software are you using to monitor your hard drive temperatures. I have 4 hard drives in my Lian-Li case, but have no idea of the running temperature of each drive? The same goes for the hard drive in my ThinkPad laptop.

  3. That is why they are marketing it as an "Acrobatic Circus" and there are many of these types of circus around the world

Never saw any marketing material on this circus.  I only found out that there was a circus in Pattaya from reading this thread.

  4. They had a flyer in the Bangkok Post of a few days back.

    Info was:

    Promotion Period - 26/02 to 26/03

    Cost: Adult - 350bt / Child - 200bt

    Phone: 038-723400 + 038-267077

    Daily show at 19.00

Pictures on the flyer indicate only acrobats, clowns etc but no animals.

I took my wife and son to the Circus Wednesday night.  Prices are as stated above and yes, only acrobats and clowns, no animals.  Also, the show did not last for 3 hours as someone else had mentioned.  The show we attended lasted for only 2 hours including the 15-20 minute break.  Also, if you are driving, you really can't enter via Soi 6 so you either need to enter via Soi 7 or the Soi that runs directly into Pattaya Park.  Enter through the Pattaya Park where you receive a pass from the guard then turn right to park either in the Pattaya Park parking area or continue to the Circus tent and park just outside the Circus tent entrance.

Overall, not a bad show, beautiful Russian ladies, however in my opinion, a circus is not a true circus without live animals from my past experience.  Still makes for something to do after a nice meal and before the Pattaya night life really gets wound up.

  5. When it rained yesterday I was unable to stop and almost hit a car in front. The wheels didn't lock up and I was pumping the brakes anyway - but the dam_n car just kept going as the tyres slid on the road - at maybe 50km/h - not fast.

    Simon

Unless I'm mistaken, it is my understanding that if you are pumping the brakes, you are defeating the purpose of the Anti-lock Braking System (ABS).  You should apply constant pressure on the brake; like you said, "The wheels didn't lock up".  Pumping the brakes will result in extended stopping distances.

I don't doubt that you may also have a problem with your tires, but just wanted to point out that you shouldn't defeat the intention of the ABS.

  6. Looking at the gsmarena.com website that was provided by one of the posters, I saw that the new Nokia E55 will be out next month with the E75 following a month or so later. The N97's release has been delayed until June. The E55 has a lot of the missing features that many owners of the E71 complain about. It has a 600MHz ARM processor, 3.5 audio jack, photo viewer as in the N models, multiple email account function, recharging through the USB connection etc. It is smaller than the E71, aluminum casing versus steel, same 2.4" display, but utilizes a half QWERTY keyboard whereby each each key is shared by two keyboard letters such as QW ER TY etc. I'm not sure smoothly this function will work, certainly not as well as a single key dedicated to a single letter, however I think that many people will like this phone due to it's smaller size. It is a big improvement over the E51 which it replaces and also uses the same 1500MaH battery of the E71. I would have been happier had they just made an updated, call it version 2 of the E71 with the upgraded features.

The E75 doesn't seem to be as appealing. It is almost 50% thicker than the E71 due to the slide out QWERTY keyboard, but only uses the older 339MHz processor, 50% less internal memory than that of the E71 and a reduced 1000MaH battery.

It seems that the two best choices are still the old E71 model or the new E55 model being released next month unless we want to wait until the release of the N97 model in June. I'm going to wait to make my purchase until I can put my hands on an E55 for comparison with the E71, but for now, I am leaning towards the E71. Hopefully, the E71 will come down in price after the release of the new models. I also read that the E71 can be purchased in the color black, sounds interesting.

  7. I've read a lot of reviews from the various sights, but wanted to hear more from users here in Thailand in case there were some compatibility issues over here or phone features that were unusable. Most of the comments that I have read are on the E71 were favorable with the users from Europe, particularly the UK, having the most problems with their phones. Before I buy this phone, has anyone heard any rumors of an upgrade or replacement model for this phone in the near future? I saw that, I believe it is the E97 will be out soon, but it will be similar to the E90 although smaller and lighter.

    Pattayadavid

PS. Does anyone know whether the E71 3G capability will be compatible with Thailand's upcoming 3G service?

  8. I have owned an E71 for over 6 months now and have to say it's an amazing phone that does everything I need plus more. I have to travel a lot for work, and quickly receiving emails instead of turning on my laptop every time is a god send. The office software is more than capable for quickly creating docs for clients. With an 8gig micro SD card I have given up carrying an mp3 player and now just use the phone. The battery life is exceptional one charge usually lasts 3 days of heavy use. Google maps works very well in Thailand as a GPS. My only small gripe is the bug that means some phone numbers in your contact list don't show peoples names when they phone you. Overall an excellent phone you won't regret owning.

Thanks for the review.  Does your E71 have the English/Thai keyboard or is it English only?  I have seen both models over here, but I'm not sure if everything inside of the phone is identical on both models.  I assume that the English keyboard model is imported from Europe.  Do both models use the same phone, wi-fi/ gprs/edge, 3G frequencies?  Are both of these models fully useable here in Thailand?

    Thanks,

    Pattayadavid

  9. I've been doing some research on the internet for the Nokia E71 mobile phone, but I prefer to hear from actual users or those who either have some hands on experience with this phone or know someone who has.  Anyway, I welcome any reviews, comments or opinions of this phone, particularly as to how it performs here in Thailand, ie phone, wi-fi, email, push mail, camera etc.

    Thanks,

    Pattayadavid

  10. I know it's kind of big, bulky and heavy, but what do you guys think of the Nokia E90; it seems to be able to do everything? I saw yesterday that Nokia is coming out with the N97 with full QWERTY keyboard similar to the E90 in the first half of this year. It appears to be slightly smaller and slimmer and most likely weighs less.

  11. I just recently went throught this display ordeal and it seemed that every monitor that I was interested in purchasing was either not available in Thailand or could be ordered, but was ridiculously expensive unless it had a TN display. I would have bought the HP because I liked the versatility of the stand, easily raised and lowered and could rotate the display 90 degrees, however it had a glossy finish on the display which I felt resulted in too much reflection. Since I had relegated myself to purchasing a TN display, I opted for the 25.5 inch Samsung T260, a great looking display. I also have a Samsung 226, 22 inch display and this the T260 is much better looking. If I were to recommend a 24 inch display, I would say the Samsung T240.

  12. Have a new T*Omnia on its way to me, so if anyone in Bangkok is interested in a lightly used Omnia with Warranty and extra software then feel free to PM me.

Where did you find the T*Omnia for sale; did you have to order it from Korea?  Anyway, congrats on the pickup and I'm looking forward to reading your review of the T*Omnia and it's comparison to the orginal Omnia.

  13. The Koran version T*Omnia is awe inspiring though with all the Omnias features + 3.3" screen with WVGA(480X800) resolution, DNSE sound engine and DMB TV tuner included.

Look forward to the screen upgrade on this regions models......next year ?

"Koran Version T*Omnia"?  Is this some sort of religious (Islamic) version of the Omnia?  I'm assuming you meant Korean version (lol).

  14. First, PAD is sighted in Pattaya, what's to follow, bombs going off around Pattaya as has happened in Bangkok? Just thinking about this though, maybe if we're lucky, tourism will go to pot this year, foreign currencies will increase in value against the baht and those of us who live here permanently will experience a better quality of life.

  15. Thanks Fun2Fun, for your very useful tips.

I have one major problem with Windows Mobile on my PC. I am unable to back-up (sync) my data from the Samsung Omnia to my PC. I did install Windows Mobile on the PC (PC runs Vista), but when I try to sync, I get the message "Outlook has not been installed". As far as I could ascertain, there is no Outlook program for Vista. So I am stuck.

Can I simply copy my data files (in particular the Contacts) from the Omnia to my PC, and would you know which file on the Omnia contains the Contacts?

Thank for any help you can provide.

What do you mean, no Outlook program for Vista?  Outlook is part of the Microsoft Office Suite which you can purchase here in Thailand either in the original version or pirated version.  I use Outlook extensively for my email on both my desktop (Vista Home 64-bit) and my notebook (Vista Home 32-bit) with no problems.  Also, Outlook was not included in Windows XP either; Windows XP included a slimmed down version called Outlook Express, not the same thing.  Get yourself a copy of Microsoft Office and if you don't want to install the full suite, do a custom install of Outlook only.

What can I say; I have been looking for a program called "Outlook", which would run under Vista, but I was told it has changed name and is now "Windows Mail". But my Windows Mobile does not accept or recognize Windows Mail. Isn't it strange that I have to actually buy a very expensive program (Microsoft Office" to be able to back-up my mobile phone?

I hope I am wrong, and would welcome any suggestion to make my Windows Mobile sync the Omnia.

I may be mistaken, but I think that Windows Mail replaced Hotmail or maybe it was Outlook Express; I'm not sure because I don't use either, however I use Outlook daily.  Save yourself some trouble and go down to TukCom, 4th floor, and pickup a copy of either Microsoft Office 2003 or 2007 Enterprise Edition for 150 baht and be done with it.

  16. I had to show proof of residence during my last 2 90-day reporting visits. I used my drivers license (old version) on both occasions. I saw a post recently concerning a poster who had received one of the new digital drivers licenses and that it did not contain his home address. If you have one of the new drivers licenses, check that it does indeed have your address on it, otherwise you will have to use a different means as proof of residency.

  17. Conclusion:

It has been stable and have worked great as a phone, it lasts a few days for every charge and it has connected easily to both GRPS/EDGE and WI-FI. (Never tried 3G).

Its not perfect though, it would be even better if it had a metallic body, higher resolution (like Wvga) and an additional connector so you could charge it and listen to music at the same time, but all in all its a very good mobile which does most functions very well and at the same time fits easily in your pocket.

Very helpful review of he Omnia.  I agree with your asertions that it is not perfect.  I too, would like to have seen it produced in a metallic body, higher resolution display and also non-proprietary connectors to list a few quirks.  I don't yet have an Omnia, but have been reading reviews and watching introductory Youtube videos of it since it was first announced.  I'm waiting for the initial sales shock in Thailand to subside and the prices begin to drop and stabilize before making a purchase.

One question I do have; with all of the available functions, GPRS/EDGE, WI-FI, GPS, what would be your recommedation as to best service package plan to sign-up for that would be both productive and provide the most bang for the buck?  Do you need a monthly subscription service or can you sign-up for a good prepaid plan?

  19. One thing that I find frustrating is that after starting a new post or posting a reply on the Thai Visa forums, I find it a pain in the *** to return to the Forum Topic Page.  Is there a setting that I can choose that will automatically return me to the initial topic page after posting a new post or reply because I haven't been able to find it?

  20. You guys are frequenting all the upscale touristy places which cost you three times the amount a Thai would pay. On Soi Bakeaw just south of Pattaya Klang, are two watch shops on the East side of the street. as you are facing away from Pattaya klang, the second shop on the left is excellent and very reasonable, Never paid more than 80 Baht for a band, or to have my watch repaired.

    Barry

Sorry Barry, but I don't agree with you. Neither of the shops I mentioned charge a lot, and you have an expensive watch I wouldn't take it anywhere except the guy in Royal Garden. I have already said that he does excellent work on the spot and has all the spares (if necessary) for name brand wtches.

Each to his own, but the difference between 80 Baht and , say 200 Baht to repair a watch worth over 20k is not even worth thinking about.

    Mobi,

My wife has about a 10 year old Rolex and it has never kept good time; do you think that the guy in Royal Garden could make some sort of adjustment or replace the mainspring with original parts to improve its timekeeping?  My Rolex Sub-Mariner is about the same age as hers, but has kept excellent time from the day I bought it to the present.

  21. Those speeds are on the LAN side of the connection and won't make any difference in the overall speed - WAN.

Now I'm confused.  If the speed from my router to my desktop through an ethernet connection is rated at 100 MBPS, but my wireless connection from my router to my notebook is rated at 54 MBPS, wouldn't that constitute a transfer speed difference, at least theoretically?

Ok, your connection to the rest of the world is at your router. Say your connection is 512/256, Ok, so far?

That 512/256 is the fastest your overall connection will ever be to a website, Ok...? The WAN side.

The higher speeds are the LAN side. The connection speeds from the PC's to router only.

So, your LAN side will be faster than your WAN side, but the overall speed to connecting to the rest of the world is still

whatever the WAN side is. Hope this helps you understand. Also, the hard cable ethernet connections are typically 100Mbps.

Some wireless routers (newer standard;G, Super G) are rated at over 100Mbs. BUT, the intel wireless chipset talking back

to it is still only 54 Mbps (The one in your laptop/notebook). So, the connection will only be as fast as the slowest link.

    Digitele

Yeah, I follow your explanation above, however my notebooks intel wireless chipset is 802.11B/G/N capable so although G provides a maximum of 54 MBPS, N is rated at up to 270 MBPS at 5.0 GHz and at 130Mbps at 2.4 Ghz.  Below are a couple of posts that I have extracted from the Lenovo Forum and before you ask, I have addressed my problem on that forum also, but have yet to receive a response.

"Given the response from others that they have been able to get the 802.11n working on the WRT600N, I reset the router and started again. I am now able to connect at 270Mbps using 5.0 GHz and at 130Mbps at 2.4 GHz."

"I found that the WRT600N was finicky in that it advertised 5GHz but did not give me 300Mb - only 270. However, my 4965AGN gave me 300Mb. The primary issue today for all 5GHz devices is that the FCC limits the output power of 5GHz. U cannot get a signal for 300Mb further than 30 feet or so. Past that, it drops like the rock. For best balance of bandwidth and distance, you can only use 2.4GHz in N only mode for 130Mbps."

Thanks for your interest and help.

  22. Those speeds are on the LAN side of the connection and won't make any difference in the overall speed - WAN.

  23. You might want to make a new thread for your review. I don't care you posted it in this one but if you made a dedicated thread it might get more views. :o

Just made a quicky in response to monty's request :D

Might also make a full review with pictures in a new tread if there is any interest :D

I would like to see a full review of the Omnia with user opinions.  I saw on Fox News last night that the new Blackberry Storm with touchscreen was recently introduced in high demand in the United States.  It's a good looking phone, but I really don't know anything about it.

  24. I have a D-Link Model DSL-2740B Rangebooster N ADSL2/2+ Modem Router.  It is supposed to support 802.11n draft wireless connections of up to a maximum of 270 MBPS versus 54 MBPS for 802-11G wireless.  Of course, I don't expect it to reach the maximum transfer speed, particularly here in Thaiand, however I would expect it to produce results better than the 54 MBPS rate for 802-11G.

I first tried it on my ThinkPad T61 which incorporates Intel® Wireless WiFi Link 4965AGN.  When connected, it shows a speed of 54MBPS (802-11G) instead of higher wireless 802-11n speeds.  I've upgraded my router to the latest firmware and have tried different configurations with no improvement in performance.  One think I have noted is that when I make an on-line configuration change to my router configuration then select "apply", immediately my ThinkPad rate changes to 150 MBPS momentarily then my connection is lost (to be expected as the router changes are being implemented), followed by reconnection of wireless signal only to return at 54 MBPS again.

I also have an older ThinkPad model without built-in wireless capability so I purchased a Belkin wireless 802.11n USB adapter to connect to my router.  Again, the maximum connection is at 54 MBPS.  When I repeat configuration changes to my router as I did above, my ThinkPad connection momentarily changes to only 1 MBPS instead of 150 MBPS as in my other T61 ThinkPad then reverts back to 54 MBPS once the configuration changes have been completed.

Has anyone successfully used wireless 802.11n successfully at the higher transfer rates (above 54 MBPS)?  Is it possible that my TOT Goldcyber connection speed is artificially limited?  I notice that my rated speed for my desktop computer connected to my same D-Link DSL-2740B only indicates a rated speed of 100 MBPS.  I use Vista Home Premium 64-bit on my destop, Vista Home Premium 32-bit on my ThinkPad T61, but us Windows XP Professional on my older ThinkPad.

I feel that my problem is either with my ADSL carrier (TOT) or compatibility with my D-Link DSL-2740B Modem Router and my ThinkPad T61 internal wireless card and/or Belkin wireless n USB adapter.  IT-City is letting me swap out the Belkin USB for the D-Link Rangebooster n DWA-140 USB adapter next week when they restock.  The only other think that I can think of is that wireless n just doesn't work in Thailand and that maybe I should just stick with wireless G and go with a higher powered wireless USB model such as the business rated EmGenius EUB 362 EXT.  Has anyone used this model and had good success with it; I've heard that it is a long range model and has the capability of reaching 108 MBPS through some sort of magic?

Looking forward to reading your replies and possible solution.
