  1. I signed up for TOT ADSL in Pattaya 3 years ago when they were offering 1MB/512K for 1,000 baht. Sometime since, I think it was last year, they offered a free upgrade to 2MB/512 for the same 1,000 baht. I didn't have to do anything; it was automatically upgraded. Yeah, I guess I could have opted to keep the 1MB/512K at a reduced price, but I preferred to accept the supposedly increased bandwidth.

TT&T does offer 2MB/512K for 590 baht per month, but it is for their Indy package which means that you share a server with 20 subscribers and is touted as aimed primarily at local users and is deemed as not very good for international users. The 2MB/1MB Premier package costs 1,090 baht per month and is touted as better for international users as you share a server with 10 subscribers. I am considering changing over to TT&T primarily because I had not been able to view YouTube videos for more than 7 months, but YouTube has recently been unblocked by TOT. Also, I was told by TT&T that there were no lines available off Soi Khaw Noi and to check back with them in a couple of months. Yes, you can pay for cheaper service, but you get what you pay for, primarily slow international connections.

  2. I have TOT 1MB/512K package which is costing me 2700B/month, I see from the maxnet link that for slightly cheaper I could be getting 4M/1M from them, anybody know what the service is like from Maxnet in terms of how frequently it drops out ?

Also does anybody know if I would have to have a new TOT telephone line or if they would be able to connect to my existing TOT line that I'm using currently with TOT ADSL ?

Monty sounds like your a bit of an expert on this am I correct in thinking that If TT&T don't have a DSLAM within 2Km of my home then download speeds of 4M would not be possible ?

Is it possible to find out from the web or TT&T office where their DSLAM's are located ?

Why does your TOT ADSL package cost 2,700 baht; do you have a business package? I have TOT GoldCyber package (2 gigibyte download, 512k upload) and I only pay slightly over 1,000 baht.

Yes it's a business package but it still uses goldcyber as the username in my modem setup, so to be honest I don't really know what benefit I'm supposed to have with this business package as it's slower than your goldcyber account. Are you limited to a certain amiunt of downloaded data per month or something ?

BTW my TOT has been dropping in and out terribly over the last 2 or 3 days, usually only for a few mins to 10 mins but very annoying, be interesting to know if this has only been limited to TOT or if other companies have been dropping in and out which would suggest that there is a problem with CAT as I beleive all internet in Thailand eventually connects internationally via CAT.

I think that the primary advantage of the business package is that there are fewer connections sharing a server so you shouldn't experience as much of a slowdown or dropouts, but what you have written, it doesn't seem to be working very well for you.  Actually, my TOT ADSL has been working much better over the past few days.  I got great connection and download speeds this morning.  Yesterday morning was fairly good also, but after around 11:00 AM, there is a serious drop in speed and I begin to get internet dropouts.  Videos have been downloading over YouTube this past week, but sometimes they won't play, hangs up after a few seconds of playing although the bar at the bottom of the video window indicates that downloading is progressing.  Other times, videos play nicely as they are downloading; I really don't know why they play sometimes and at other times they do not.  Can anyone tell me if they experience the same symptoms viewing YouTube with other ISP's such as TT&T?

  3. Anyone else experience this problem with TOT on tuesday night? All night long disconnected every 3 or 4 minutes. From 8 pm already and now 02.25 am.Changed modem already, changed settings.Getting wild by now because 1100 service says ofcourse that there is no problem with the connection. But it took me about 45 minutes to get in with them.

I can't believe I'm saying this, but I'm glad to see that someone else was having a problem with TOT yesterday and again this morning. I thought it was just me because yesterday afternoon, I changed my connection IP Address to a static address to setup Port Fowarding for use with Utorrent. I couldn't understand why my connection speeds had slowed down so drastically especially the international connections. It seems that TOT always screws up in conjunction to when I make a change in settings therefore I never know whether it was my settings change that caused the slowdown or malfunction or TOT themselves.

Well let's have an update on my problem. As I reported before, since 8 pm tuesday,my adsl connection disconnected every 4 minutes for about 2 minutes.Every 6 minutes I got a new ip address from tot.I reported it to the 1100 customer service at 2 am wednesday. However when I woke up an wednesday the problem was still excactly the same.At 1 pm I call again to 1100 and they tell me that there seems to be no problem with their line so it will be my modem. You have to know that I switched modem 3 times already during that time.At about 2.30 pm,I still get disconnected every 4 minutes,I remember that the day before in the morning a techinician from tot called my mobile to know if ny connection was ok :D .So i look up that number and call it.Again same s-hit about the modem. At that point I get realy upset and tell them that if the problem is fixed in the next 30 minutes I will be at the TOT office and it will not look nice when I arrive.Mysteriously my adsl hasn't disconnected once since that phone call.So who are they playing with the b*lls as they first can't fix a problem for 24 hours but when you get realy mad they can fix it within less then 4 minutes. :o

Thank God you got it fixed today.  With the Buddhist lint holiday beginning tomorrow, you probably wouldn't have been able to contact the TOT office until Monday.  This happened to me during Songkran this year; my ADSL service was out for over a week.

    I have TT&T 2 Gig and I pay 690 a month.

    Barry

If you are only paying 690 per month then you much be using TT&T's Indy package; good for local connections, but if you want better international speeds then you should opt for the Premier package.  The Indy package has 20 people sharing a server whereby the Premier package has half as many (10).

  4. Another thumbs up for Gmail, plus it can be used as either/both PoP3 and IMAP. Also, Gmail hasn't required an invitation to join for a long time now. Just go to their website and sign up.

  5. I too, haven't seen dual layer -R's anywhere, but I wouldn't have any use for them anyway. From what I have been told, +R provide multisession recording, but -R does not. I'm assuming that your recorder only supports -R, but if it does support both -R and +R, I would recommend that you go with the +R.

  6. Now seeing the pic from your memory one thing springs in my eye: Bank one (TRANSCEND): 16 Chips

and Bank two (Samsung): 8 Chips.

That will force problems right a way.

The Acer MB's for Laptops are designed for Dual Channel Memory in first line. Using of different Chips and than even different Memory size of the chips in the different Bank, will force compatibility problems.

I had the same on my laptop at beginning and after changing the memory to both the same the problems was gone. Important is to use the exact same memories in all slots.

    Cheers.

I'm not familiar with the Acers, but on my ThinkPad T61 I have mixed my memory size and experienced no problems. I have a 1GB Corsair high performance memory card in the primary slot and a 2GB memory card of the same time memory in the second slot. I think that having the same type memory is more important than the size of the memory in the available slots. I haven't experienced any problems at all with running Vista SP1 on my laptop. the only time I can't get the cursor to respond is when Outlook is sending/receiving messages, but that is normal for Outlook on every computer that I have owned whether I'm running Vista or XP.

The T61 has an max of 3 GB memory and as far as I know didn't support Dual Channel Memory (i called once a few weeks ago to IBM

Service about exactly that). But the Thinkpad series are not sensitive about memories like Sony, Toshiba and Acer!

    Cheers.

    Reimar,

I didn't realize that a maximum of 3GB memory could be used in the T61.  The only reason I used 3GB was due to the Vista 32-bit operating system used.  I guess it wouldn't be of much benefit to run the Vista 64-bit operating system on my ThinkPad, but I'll check into it further.  My ThinkPad came with 2 1GB sticks of Korean made Hynix memory.  The specification indicated on the memory stick is 1GB 2Rx16 PC2-5300S-555-12.  I can't remember what the specification was on my Corsair 2G stick of memory, but I was mistaken, it is not high perfomance memory.  It is Corsair Value Select PC-5300 DDR-2-667MHz.

  7. I am a TOT user in Pattaya and have not been able to view any YouTube videos since late last year, but for some reason TOT was allowing YouTube videos to be viewed on Friday and again yesterday, but today they are again blocked. They must have had a problem in their blocking hardware/software, whatever they use to block YouTube, over the past two days. That, or they were just putting out a teaser for their current subscribers then rub it in our face by blocking it again. I'm on the waiting list for a TT&T phone line then I will be rid of TOT's sensorship.

  9. I use TOT in Pattaya and haven't been able to view a YouTube video since late last year, but after reading your post, I thought that I would give it a try. At least for tonight, I am finally able to view YouTube videos again; I am using Opera 9.50. I'm crossing my fingers that the block has been eliminated for good.

  10. Aha! There we go!

Despite that there would be for sure some out there and talking the opposit I just like to explain the best way how to move to an surprisingly working Vista Ultimate, or min. an Vista Business, because of the limitations in the lower class Vista's!

    Ok, here we go:

Using an Vista OEM Version, because of the differences in price and/or cost, the Hard Disk should be formatted before installing or latest within the installation process. An Upgrade from XP isn't possible witn an OEM verion and even for someone who is using the MS Original Vista, it's quite downgrading.

Follow the screen instruction with one difference: DO NOT USE THE CD-KEY YET!

    Install Vista complete!

Install all required Drivers (may you need to download some) but NOT any Application Software yet.

    Install SP 1.

Upgrade Vista by downloading all of the rest upgrade.

Set the Upgrade option include other MS products.

Install all MS Applications you want to use incl. Office 2007.

Run Upgrade again to get the latest Upgrades for MS products.

NOW INSERT THE CD-KEY AND ACTIVATE VISTA!

Avoid Anti Virus software like Norton, NOD32 pp. I use Avast and ClamWin.

Download and install AWC (Advanced Windows Care).

Download and install Auslogics DiskDefrag and RegitryDefrag.

Using this way on an bunch of computers already has shown me that this brings the most out of Vista without extra tweaking.

As a sidenote to this: I even don't use the OEM Manufacturer Vista but the "OPEN" OEM Vista which isn't bundled with an bought product. Last has shown me that it's less powerfull for which reason ever.

I had found out while working with Vista that the best way is to install all MS software, Upgrades pp BEFORE activation. Even running Auto Update after finish the Installation hasn't any negative effect as far as I can tell until now.

    Cheers.

    Hi Reimar,

Very excellent guide for installation of Microsoft Vista.  I pretty much followed along the same lines as you when I recently installed a clean open OEM version of Vista 64.  I've never tried Avast, but have not experienced any problems with NOD32 Smart Security 3.0.  I also use and like Advanced Windows Care.  I've tried on several occasions to use the AWC3 Beta, but had some initial problems with Vista, but several days ago, I tried the lastest version, AWC3 Beta 2.71 and thus far it has been working fine.  Have you been participating in AWC's Beta program?

    Pattayadavid

  11. approx. 10 hours of tweaking later, I found out that Vista is indeed quite slow.

A phone call to a trustworthy computer geek and moderator :o sorted something: Get rid of the NOD antivir and give AGV a try....yep! That one did it! Speed increased significantly but still 57% RAM used....having Outlook 2007, Groove and Firefox 3.0 with 11 tabs open.

Will report back tomorrow when we start WORKING with this come.....working means here some 20 windows open and at least as many tabs in firefox...all for business purpose of course...

The Vista Computer wit 2 GB Memory is all showing 57% of memory using, with 4 GB it's 38% and with Vista 64 Bit and 8 GB it's 21%

The more interesting part is the CPU Usage which is, used the way of installation I posted before, by dual core normal 0-3% and by opening some program up to maybe 50-60% for a very short time (a few secs maybe).

I run in the Sidebar 3 different Gadgets: 1. the Watch, 2. A WiFi Meter and 3. a Multimeter with CPU (DualCore) and RAM usage.

The WiFi Meter and Multimeter I'll attach as 1 .RAR file, both are Freeware.

    Cheers.

    Hi Reimar,

I downloaded the two gadgets to give them a try.  The Wi-Fi meter gadget indicates that I am disconnected, of course I am connected.  I couldn't find any settings or options to input into it, do I need to restart my computer to get it to function properly?  I like the Multimeter gadget except that it is onlydual core as you had indicated; have you seen a quad core version?

    Thanks,

  12. Last week or so, maybe up to half of the video's on youtube come up as "We're sorry, this video is no longer available".

Strange in the fact that maybe an hour later the video might work again.

Strange since it all are video's showing up on a youtube search. If it's not available anymore, why does it shows up on the seacrh in the first place?

At some times, simply ALL the video's are like that!

Following screenshot is of a most watced video...

    post-4701-1216603201_thumb.jpg

At least you can see some videos; I get the same message on all videos.  I haven't been able to see a video at all this year; I'm using TOT in Pattaya.  There has been occasions that when I switch from fow to high quality download, I could see the bar moving across the bottom as though it is loading, however when I go to play it, I can only view about 2 seconds of video.  If I continue to hit play, I will see additional 2 seconds of video.  I can even move the slider to the right to a different point, play press and again, I see only about 2 seconds of video.  This same thing occurs when I've tried to use a proxy server.  The funny thing is, I can download and save videos using a YouTube download program and play them back later.  Many times the downloads dropout so I don't get a full download.

Sometimes I tend to think that it is the flash player function that is being affected by the ISP since I can sometimes download the videos.  I have tried uninstalling and reinstalling my flash player many times.  Even after a clean Vista installation, I get the same results.  All three of my computers are affected and react in exactly the same way.  I plan to check my laptop at one of the free wireless sites, maybe at the hospital to see if I can view YouTube videos from a different ISP other than TOT before changing my ISP carrier.

Yesterday, for the first time ever, I setup my PC LAN with a static IP then setup Port Forwarding in my Router. So far, I really haven't noticed any increase in speed or reliability, but will continue to monitor over the next few weeks.

  17. I went to the TT&T office in CarreFour today and was told that there were no available (free) TT&T phone lines in my area, all were taken. I was told that I would have to wait for a cancellation which may take up to two months. Now, it looks like I may have to choose from either CAT ADSL, if they can use TOT phone lines, or Banglamung Cable Modem ADSL. Is there anyone living off of Soi Khaw Noi who is presently using either CAT ADSL with a TOT phone connection or Banglamung Cable Modem ADSL? If so, could you give me your opinion of your service, in particular, your international connections and steaming video capability?

    Thanks,

    Pattayadavid

  18. Is Supernet and Banglamung Cable Net the same or are they two different companies? I live off of Soi Khaw Noi on the east side of Sukcumvit and am presently using TOT Gold Cyber, but have been very disappointed with it's international service and lack of video viewing such as YouTube. I am presently using Banglamung Cable TV so would their cable net be the best route for me to go? Do you prefer the cable modem service over traditional ADSL services in Pattaya? Do you get good international download/upload speeds? Can you view videos such as YouTube and downstream videos from sources such as CNN or Fox News? Can I still use my D-Link 2740B wireless modem/router in conjunction with the cable modem for use with my notebook computer? Where can I find Supernet or who carries it in Pattaya?

    Pattayadavid

  19. I have supernet 2 mbit.

Speeds are usable for surfing, if you come from dial up you'll find it blistering fast :o

I think you're better of with the 1 mbps package, unless you want to download a lot.

Regular surfing and downloads see between 500 and 1000 kbps, but when I use a download manager (which opens several connections simultaneously) I get close to the advertised 2 mbps.

As Reimar said above, any application which needs incoming connections (webcam, p2p etc) won't work properly or will not work at all.

Supernet is not a full blown ISP, which means they do not hand out public IP address to your PC. You only get a private IP address, with the only public address visible on the internet will be the address from Supernet's router! To which you do not have access, so port forwarding cannot be done.

All in all, for regular web use it's a good choice, but if you need it for anything else, it gets useless due to not having a public ip address!

    Monty,

I keep a copy of the file in my Software Downloads storage - DRW-1814BLT_FW114_1129

    It's the latest version.

    Any Ideas?

    CS

I have the same model, ASUS DRW-1814BLT, as you.  I just performed a clean install of Vista 64 a couple of weeks ago and upgraded my firmware with the lastest version, the same version above and have had no problems at all with my DRW.  Of course, I wasn't having any problems with it using the previous version firmware either.  It sounds to me that you may have a hardware failure versus a firmware problem.  Is your DRW still under warranty?  If so, I would consider exchanging it.

    Pattayadavid

  21. OZEMADE,

Banglamung Cable Net sounds interesting. I have used Banglamung Cable TV for 3 years now and have been very much satisfied with their reliability although the programing could be better. Is the cable modem installed inside in the vicinity of your computer? For 9,090 baht, did you actually purchase the cable modem or is it still only a rental?

You stated "My Download speed today at 3PM was 1820Kbps and Upload Speed was 460Kbps." Where was the speedtest connection performed, was it Bangkok? What kind of connection speeds do you get say to New York and San Francisco.

I checked my speeds with my TOT Gold Cyber recently with the following results:

    Thursday night at 2140 hours:

Bangkok 1779 kbps download 343 kbps upload Ping 310ms

San Francisco 581 kbps download 62 kbps upload Ping 999ms

New York 60 kbps download 35 kbps upload Ping 936ms

    Friday morning at 1010 hours:

Bangkok 1760 kbps download 383 kbps upload Ping 216ms

San Francisco 1739 kbps download 148 kbps upload Ping 586ms

New York 172 kbps download 91 kbps upload Ping 784ms

No wonder I can't watch Fox News videos with a 60 kbps download being that Fox News is located in New York. I tried to watch Bill O'Reilly's talking points 2 min 50 sec long. It took a good 5 min just to get a picture then another 4 or 5 min followed by an 11 sec playback, another 5 min pause following by 15 sec playback. I figured it would take me 30 - 45 minutes just to watch the full video. A year ago I could watch this same video interrupted by only momentary (few seconds) pauses. Note that downspeeds to San Francisco displayed a notable improvement during the morning hours here.

Could you do me a favor and perform a speed test using www.speedtest.net for San Franscisco and New York for comparisons? Also, could you go to the Fox News link http://www.foxnews.com/video/index.html and try to play one of the videos and provide me your results and opinion?

    Thanks,

    Pattayadavid

  22. I run 64 bit Vista for quite a while and so far nearly everything works. The only things that haven't have been the odd minor piece of software written by hardware vendors (the kind of crappy stuff you wouldn't want to run anyway). For example, ASUS PC-probe doesn't work (but maybe, they have a 64 bit version now somewhere).

64 bit version of ASUS PC-Probe is available for download, however it won't start automatically.  Vista will ask you for permission every time it loads.

  23. The single most problem I had with IMAP and Outlook 2007 is that I could not send messages using Outlook from either of my Gmail accounts.

Can you verify that your setup was / is like this? (Pay particular attention to the Outgoing Server Settings.)

I have tried leaving a copy of messages on the Gmail server, but still, once I download messages from one computer under Outlook 2007, say 10 messages, then try to do the same on my Notebook computer, the messages won't download a second time. I can go to the Gmail website and the messages will be in the Inbox, but I guess that Gmail thinks that they have already been downloaded and won't let me do if for a second time. I never had this problem with previous Pop3 or hotmail accounts, just my Gmail accounts. I'm open to try anything.

This is odd. Both PCs should show the exact same messages using IMAP. Were BOTH PCs setup using IMAP?

The above problem is when I use Gmail with POP3 on multiple computers, not IMAP.  This is why I considered changing over from POP3 to IMAP.

  24. One thing worth thinking about is TiT... Things have a way of changing here, it's quite possible we could change from ToT to another provider and that they confirm that access to youtube is no problem with them, also it's possible they are telling the truth, but then Tit comes into play and it all changes over night, for what ever reason youtube blocked again...

    Just a thought :o

Good point, however it has been at least 6 months since TOT began blocking transmissions, but others have not followed suite.  My understanding, talking with the TOT technician today, is that TT&T and others are private commercial companies and are not obliged to block these sites.  Also, it's not only YouTube that is blocked by TOT.  I can't download any streaming video; even Fox News videos want play.  YouTube may be blocked by decree, but I kind of think that TOT has expanded this in order to control bandwidth; possibly they have over extended themselves.

  25. I really think the internet quality here has a lot to do with location, not provider so much.

I've been in about 8 different locations and had horrible to great experiences with the same providers.

It's a mixture of line quality and exchange quality.

Thankfully now we have both CAT and tt&t (2 adsl connections), and they both are great :o

I agree; most of the time my TOT connection is fairly good for Thailand standards.  I would not be looking to change if it wasn't for TOT's, either voluntary or mandatory, blocking of most if not all steaming video viewing.  I wish that there was a map or diagram of some sort that identified the location of each provider's stations.  This way, I would be able to choose from those available in close proximity to my home.  I will checkout CAT and TT&T Maxnet in the coming days even though CAT is a little out of my price range.  It wasn't mentioned, but is CAT's ADSL carried over their own phone lines or are they available over TOT lines?
