  1. I don't use Outlook nor Gmail, but normally the sending of emails is done via the smtp server, and is not related to wether you chose IMAP or POP to read your emails.

Can you send emails from your Gmail accounts when you use POP3?

You're correct, outbound email uses smtp.gmail.com whether using PoP3 or IMAC, but for some reason, I still couldn't send email using an IMAC account whereas my PoP3 accounts worked fine.  When setting up the IMAC accounts, I performed the test and each time it failed.

  2. Why are you complaining??? Buy a car with a smaller engine! Beautiful will cost you....

I do like your cars... Can I borrow either one of them for a week? I will pay for my own petrol... (I dont mind)

Still cheaper here than back home, ltr for ltr...

I did not think corkscrew was complaining, just remarking, and he had a good point. I hear Sierra Leone has the most expensive petrol, and Venezuela has the cheapest.

Right, PeaceBlondie, I was not complaining....just commenting. People in the US are really grumbling (making it almost an election issue) at $4.25 a gallon when they have a family income of $75k per year. Here people have to pay almost 20% more for petrol.

My tank holds 70 litres....to fill it from scratch would cost about 3,200 baht. That is the equivalent of 6 working days for a Thai making 16,000 per month. In the US that $77.35 fill up might amount to a half day of work for an equivalent worker.

My little SLK (just 4 pistons) is not thirsty.....but this BKK traffic changes everything. :o

I had just remarked to the wife the other day that I haven't seen any decrease in Traffic flow in Pattaya even though we have seen a substantial increase in petrol prices.  There may be a few more motorbikes on the road, but I still see a substantial number of Thai drivers cruising around in their cars and trucks.  I had commented many times on the number of people that appear to be driving around during the middle of the day.  There must be a lot of retired Thai's living in Pattaya.

  3. Pattayadavid

I have had the same TOT package as you for several years and it started out ok, being able to stream video etc but the last year or so it has been so bad that skype voice wouldn't work, forget anything bandwidth intensive like skype with video, or even viewing naughty images. Impossible.

Here is a speed test a did a while ago.

Remember this should be a 2meg down connection.

BTW this is from CHonBuri to Bangkok, internal not even international. The second test was to NY if I remember correctly.

Heck, I get better speeds on the road using my AIS GPRS aircard :o

    Bangkok

    293812107.png

    And the USA

    293813038.png

I get fairly good connection speeds; it just that I can't use the internet to it's fullest.  My service has been generally reliable, but I would like to do a little bit more than surf the internet and send/receive emails.  Every time I try to watch any video from any source, at best it will load about 2 seconds worth of video then freeze.

Both TOT and TT&T are provided on my compound.  I originally went with TOT 3 years ago because there was a 4 month waiting list for a TT&T number.  Maybe it will be easier to acquire a number now, but if not, I can always sign-up for a number and keep my TOT until it's available.

Any other suggestions for service in the Soi Khaw noi area of the dark side?

  4. I have used TOT GoldCyber ADSL services for 3 years and as all of you are well aware, TOT has blocked video streaming sites such as YouTube.  Actually, I have been unable to view any videos from any source in over 6 months now.  I live on a compound off Soi Khaw Noi and want to make a switch.  My service had been out or the past 2 days and while talking to the service technician, he confirmed that TOT, being a government owned or controlled, whichever, company does indeed block YouTube.  I asked him as to why I am unable to view videos from other sites, but he didn't have an answer.

I'm looking for the best service provider in my area.  I presently have a TOT phone line and would prefer to find a good provider that could use the existing TOT line because there is generally a waiting list to obtain a new phone line connection, but if not, I am willing to make the switch.  I want to make sure that I sign-up with a provider that doesn't restrict the viewing of flash videos such as YouTube.

I welcome your suggestions and if possible, could you provide contact information and/or package prices.  I presently have the 2G/512K TOT GoldCyber package.  I want to get it right this time!

    Thanks,

    Pattayadavid

  5. I downloaded and installed "The Bat". It seems to be a pretty good mail client. I was able to import all of my messages, folders and contacts from Outlook. The one feature that I could not import from Outlook was my Rules and Alerts settings. As I said, I have setup a lot of individual folders in Outlook to store my messages. I use Outlooks Rules and Alerts feature extensively to direct my mail to the appropriate folder when it arrives in the Inbox. I can't find this feature in "The Bat" nor can I import my rules from Outlook. This is one feature I would hate to give up.

Also, Gmail did not list "The Bat" as one of its IMAP clients. Has anyone tried to setup Gmail IMAP accounts in "The Bat"?

    Thanks,

    Pattayadavid

  6. I downloaded and installed Opera 9.51 today. 9.5 had been working fine. Twice already I have gotten the message that Opera has encountered a problem and has to close. Not much of an improvement. :o

I had a lot of crashes also when I upgraded from 9.5 to 9.51 last week, but it seems to have stabilized now for some reason.  If it starts crashing again, I'll go back to 9.5.  One think I do like about Opera is that when you reload after a crash, you can continue from where you left off, opened tabs and all.  Maybe Opera will rush out a newer version rather sooner than later since we are having problems.

  7. Sorry for the late reply, but my fantastic (lol) TOT ADSL connection has been out for the past 2 days or so. I initially went to the Gmail website and made sure that IMAP was enabled then downloaded the instructions for setting up IMSP in Outlook. I opened Outlook and established two new accounts in IMAP for my two Gmail accounts. During testing while setting up the accounts, neither would pass the send portion of the test. I opened the Outlook folder in Windows and noted that there was two new outbox (out(account name).pst folders for my IMAP accounts along with the original Outlook.pst folder. It took a long time to initially download all of the headers stored on Google Gmail.

The single most problem I had with IMAP and Outlook 2007 is that I could not send messages using Outlook from either of my Gmail accounts. I spent an entire day trying to troubleshoot this problem. I finally gave up and did a system restore to return to an earlier time before I had setup the IMAP accounts because I had also deleted my POP3 accounts; everything is as it was previously. Has anyone had any problems or success sending email messages from Outlook 2007 using IMAP accounts and Gmail? I may give it another try if I receive some encouraging input from others who have had success with IMAP and Outlook 2007. Of those who can send messages with Outlook 2007 using Gmail accounts, did you do something different that following the settings recommended by the Google Gmail site?

I have tried leaving a copy of messages on the Gmail server, but still, once I download messages from one computer under Outlook 2007, say 10 messages, then try to do the same on my Notebook computer, the messages won't download a second time. I can go to the Gmail website and the messages will be in the Inbox, but I guess that Gmail thinks that they have already been downloaded and won't let me do if for a second time. I never had this problem with previous Pop3 or hotmail accounts, just my Gmail accounts. I'm open to try anything.

Gmail did not list "The Bat" as one of it's IMAP clients. Has anyone tried to setup Gmail IMAP accounts in "The Bat". Speaking of "The Bat"; it appears to be a good email client, but I found one glaring omission after importing all of my data from Outlook. I have a lot of individual folders setup in Outlook to store my messages. I use the Rules and Alerts feature extensively to direct my mail to the appropriate folder when it arrives in the Inbox. I can't find this feature in "The Bat" nor can I import my rules from Outlook.

    Thanks,

    Pattayadavid

  8. I use several different computers and Outlook as my primary email client.  I've setup several Gmail POP3 accounts within Outlook.  The problem I have is that when I download email from one computer, I can't download it again with the second computer.  I've tried all kinds of settings, but nothing seems to work.

Today, I went to the Gmail website and under settings, I saw the option to use IMAP and did some reading on it.  I decided to try he IMAP setup because it appeared that it would be better to use with multiple computers accessing Gmail accounts.  I followed the instructions as to setup IMAP in Outlook and it downloaded all of the message headers and placed them in an IMAP folder similar looking to the Gmail website page.  I've tried everything thus far, but for some reason I am unable to send messages written in Outlook.

Anyway, I was curious as to your comments on using IMAP especially those who have tried it or regularly use it.

    Thanks,

    Pattayadavid

  9. maybe try this guy?

Aahahahhahahahahaha. Sorry. BHT 3000 to unlock an iPhone? Using "the best unlock" method? That is surely a joke?!

First off, I had a guy in Chiang mai unlock and install Thai language pack for me in Chiang Mai for... BHT 300. Second, the ZiPhone application will unlock any iPhone in a few minutes - it has one big button, unlock. Connect your phone, start Ziphone, unlock. It's that easy. Only reason I had it done on my gf's phone is that I don't know where / how to install the Thai language pack and the number ID fix - the Chiang Mai shop - PDA Clinic in Tall Teak Plaza @ Nimmanhemin road - did it all in 10 minutes, for 300 BHT.

    Back on topic...

The above post was about the 3G iPhone. No one can honestly say right now when and where and for how much it will be available. We will have to wait until after it's released. You can "buy" a 3G iPhone on ebay right now - but who knows when you'll get it, and in the worst case the "seller" underestimated the iPhone street price and will suddenly and mysteriously not be able to deliver. Too bad. In the best case, the street price is lower than the seller's price and you will get it - but then you'll have overpaid.

So hold your horses and wait until the 3G iphone is officially available. When you buy it really soon after release, better make sure it's real, it's working, and you are holding it in your own hands before parting with your cash.

After a short while the market will have matured and everyone will know where and how and for how much to get the grey import 3G iphone. I'd wait until then.

Anyone claiming to be able to unlock a 3G iPhone now is lying. It's hard to unlock something that isn't available. What is known is that the grey market distribution model - buy in the USA, unlock, sell here - won't work anymore. There's no way around it, if you buy in the USA you must also sign a 2 year contract. And pass the credit check.

Once the new 3G model goes on sale in the U.S. and can be purchased unlocked, it would make since that the older models would also become available in unlocked versions without contracts.  Wouldn't the cheapest route to purchase an iPhone (not 3G model) be to purchase it in the U.S. in the coming months after the official release of the 3G model in the states?  The older models should be really cheap to pick up in the states and if they could be purchased unlocked without contract, couldn't you then have it shipped over here and have it unlocked if necessary?

    Pattayadavid

PS. I also think that by the time the iPhone 3G is available for purchase in Thailand or at some point this year, other manufacturers will have substantially made inroads towards the iPhone format. We will be seeing a lot of iPhone copycats with touchscreen function in the next generation models from most of the major manufacturers.

  10. Duuh, DL is dual layer.....not ready to get a new burner now. may try to resize it, but i'm already converting the movie from avi format to DVD format. It's a 3hr 22min movie, Apocolypse Now.

    Jaideeguy,

Is there an advantage to converting a movie from avi to DVD format.  I had recently downloaded a 22 episode TV series torrent that was formatted in avi format.  I was going to convert these to DVD format, but I could only burn 2 episodes on a DVD for best quality or 3 episodes per DVD for average quality.  I ended up using Nero and just copying the avi files to DVD enabling me to put 12 episodes on the first DVD and 10 episodes on a second.  The picture quality is good although there is some slight stuttering during playback.  I don't know whether converting an avi file to DVD format would have eliminated this since the avi file is was the original source.  Since your movie is also sourced via avi, have you considered just burning it on a single DVD and try playing it.  I didn't have any problem playing back my burned avi files on my home Denon DVD player; it even transferred the menu for the episodes.  If the picture quality will be better converted to DVD format then that's another story.

    Pattayadavid

PS. If you have a very old DVD burner in your computer, an upgrade to a new burner will not only allow you to burn dual layer DVD's; it will also burn much faster. Also, you can use your old burner as the player and the new model as the burner when copying DVD's. Just a few suggestions off the top of my head, sorry if I'm rambling.

  11. Bought mine nearly a year ago, and it's by far the longest I've ever had any phone. Not only am I not bored with it, but because there are so many new applications available for download onto it, it's a delight to find new ways to use it everyday.

did you buy yours in bangkok, and if so, may i ask where? i have been thinking of buying the older 8 or 16gb version when the 3G comes out and prices drop, but have heard a lot of stories about problems with hacked versions and unlocking etc. yours is ok though?

I have the same question.  I had read somewhere that the older firmware versions (don't know firmware #) were easier to hack, but there was difficulty hacking or maintaining the hack on newer models.  I had also read that you lose the hack when performing updates then have to reinstall the hack again.  Is this correct?  Is the iPhone a hack and forget or a constant stuggle to keep it functioning?

  12. I always use Outlook. I know you don't like web based accounts, however I use G-Mail setup as multiple Pop3 accounts in Outlook. I think that G-Mail has one of the best SPAM filters out there. Used with Outlook, which is integrated with your anti-virus or internet security suite, I think it is the best of both worlds. Also with Outlook, you can right click on your attached files and save them to other folders. I also believe that you can go to the Gmail website and in personal preferences, you can select to have all of your messages deleted after downloading, but I'm not quite sure of this.

    Pattayadavid

  13. The largest capacity I've seen thus far is 8.5GB. I believe it is a dual layer or dual side, maybe both, I'm not sure. I bought one, a Mitsubishi brand, at ITCity last month. The Mitsubishi brand was the only large capacity brand offered. They're not cheap; a single DVD+R 8.5GB will cost you some where between 120 - 150 baht.

  14. Which Hi Speed Internet packages can be used on my TOT Adsl line, besides the internet package of TOT itself ? I am interested in both prepaid as well as 1 year packages.

I wouldn't count on TOT for high speed internet service.  I have their CyberGold package here in Pattaya and it is so, so slow.  Trying to connect to my bank back in the U.S. over the past two nights, it took so long to connect that they wouldn't even load the normal HTML webpage.  Instead, they loaded a lighter text version with the following message:

"We detected a slow connection on your computer and have redirected you to a lighter version of usaa.com. You will be able to complete these transactions faster."

I don't know where you are located, but if you are in Pattaya I would look for a different provider over your TOT line other than TOT itself.

  15. What you mean with qualifying? I think that has nothng to do with that. But some Updates MS will never run via the automated updates. May it's just to be as much sure as possible that the used Version is a genuine one or whatever reason.

As long as the used version is original there wouldn't be any problem.

One think I've found is that if you do a clean installation of Vista include all required drivers and than SP1 and the rest of available Updates, the system runs much better and very stable.

I had done that now with 4 computers with a huge improvement. And that even with the exact same software installed, after the above described one, and even more applications.

    Cheers.

    Reimar,

What I mean by qualifying, does Microsoft offer a lot of these type updates that can only be downloaded via their download website versus via the automatic download function?  If so, should these downloads be installed in the order as they were made available.  I'm feel sure that not all of the available downloads will be necessary for me to download, however i am interested particularly in the ones that increase speed and reliability.  My Vista 64 version came with SP1 integrated with the operating system instead of being a separate application so I was unable to install SP1 at a later time.

  16. Let's try to tell with this words:

If you register with MS after installation, MS will keep your complete registration on it's database. (If you didn't register but activate only instead, they keep the known data as well but not personal on.

To re-activate a unregistered Version of Windows is less hassle than an registered one.

As I wrote in my post before, just give them a reason why you need to reactivate. There shouldn't be any problem.

Once I had the same version of Windows Server 2003 Web Edition activated 6 times on one day just to find out how far I can go. All 6 times went OK with 4 times calling. and all installations on different hardware as well. That's 1 1/2 year ago.

    Cheers.

    Thanks Reimar,

I guess I will go ahead and run the validation tool and register.  I'm assuming that this update will make a significant improvement in my Vista 64 function.  Does Microsoft offer a lot of updates in this manner that don't qualify as automatic updates?  In addition to the above update, are there other Windows Updates that you highly recommend for Vista Home Premium 64-bit SP1 integrated?

  17. Reimar,

I clicked on your the link you provided and was going to install the update, but hesitated when I was redirected to the Genuine Windows Advantage page requring that I run the validation tool before I can install this update. What gives? I have a genuine OEM Vista 64 installed and registered with Microsoft and receive Windows Updates automatically almost daily, so why must I run this validation tool? If I choose not to run the validation tool at this time, will this update eventually be available for automatic download? I've done some reading concerning the pros and cons of installing the Genuine Windows Advantage Validation Tool and at this point, I am still undecided as to whether to install it. What is your take on this?

Also, I understand that the OEM version of Vista 64 is locked to a single motherboard. Does it become locked to my motherboard at the time of installation, at the time of initial registration or does it not become locked to the motherboard until after running the Genuine Windows Advantage Validation Tool? In other words, until I run the validation tool, can I remove my Vista 64 operation system from my present computer and move it to a different computer?

    Pattayadavid

PS. I'm still updating my computer and reloading programs following the clean install of Windows Vista 64. When I finish completing this effort, I plan to give you a call and discuss issues of Raid Storage and memory upgrade as we have touched on through our PM's.

I don't think that this update will available in Automatic Updates. So if you want to install you need to run the Genuine Windows Advantage Validation Tool. There wouldn't be an problem, only if you use an pirated version of windows.

And here we go. The OEM version is bundled to Hardware but you're able to buy that version freely in Thailand and those version are NOT bundled to specific Hardware. Even if you need to re-install and later re-activate while changing hardware, there isn't any problem.

You can use your Windows Version on any computer you like but after the first activation you maybe need to reactivate via phone which isn't a deal because you can use the Toll Free 800 number. Just need to give them a reasonable hint why you need to re-install and you may just tell you changed some hardware because of power problem or so if they ask.

    Cheers.

    Hi Reimar,

I bought my OEM version through NewEgg.com in the United States and had it mailed to me; it was also not bundled with specific hardware.  I was informed that when installed it would be locked to my computer's motherboard, however I was told that it may possibly, not definitely, be moved to another computer same as you said above by contacting Microsoft.

My question concerns the point at which my OEM version initially becomes tied to the computer motherboard.  Does it occur during the initial activation of Windows Vista following installation or will it occur after installation of the Windows Genuine Advantage Tool after it completes a scan of my computer?

  18. You should always backup a RAID 1 volume. It is not designed to be a backup in itself and only protects your data from single hard drive failure. RAID 1 does not cover you from data corruption, viruses infecting your data, etc.

In case the files on your RAID volume become corrupted, you should ALWAYS, ALWAYS have a backup, preferably off-site...

To be honest, I don't see the point of RAID 1:

RAID 1 (mirrored disks) uses two (possibly more) disks which each store the same data, so that data is not lost so long as one disk survives. Total capacity of the array is just the capacity of a single disk. The failure of one drive, in the event of a hardware or software malfunction, does not increase the chance of a failure or decrease the reliability of the remaining drives (second, third, etc).

I have two identical disks and use the second as a backup. With RAID 1, if you screw up the first disk, you also screw up the other disk!

That's fine and well as long as you backup regularly (daily), but if you only backup weekly or monthly and your primary hard drive fails then you've lost that week or month's worth of data.  I prefer the Raid 1 configuration with a weekly backup.

  19. Which DVD is better for Burning Movies and Videos I'm busy downloading via Torrents?

I was told that +R is Better, and playable on almost all machines.

but some on this forum are recommending -R as easier to Burn, as I'm having some Burn problems.

    All Debate is welcome.

    Thanks

    CS

I asked this same question when I first started downloading torrents and went to purchase DVDR's.  I was told by the salesman that DVD+R's were generally better because they could be used to record in multi-session, but DVD-R's could only be used for a single session.  If you are only recording a single movie and don't plan to use the additional free space on the DVD then either +R or -R would be fine, however if you are planning to record multiple movies or multiple episodes of a TV series and wish to use all of the space on the disk, I would go for the DVD+R's for their multi-session capability.  With prices being equal, I would go with the DVD+R's unless you are having compatibility issues with your DVD recorder.  I cannot confirm the above information, but only that this is how it was explained to me by the salesman.

    Pattayadavid

PS. I've just recently recorded my first DVD+R of a TV series downloaded via torrent and experienced no difficulty in recording or on playback except for a little jerkyness during playback which I pretty much contribute to the original .avi torrent.

  21. Hi,

I am a little bit confused as to your reference to "Drivers".  I have both DVD and CD units from ASUS and when I checked for drivers on the ASUS site, there weren't any drivers to download, however there were firmware updates which I was able to download and then flash my drives.  Is this what you mean?  I didn't think DVD and CD units came with drivers anymore, however I have been known to be wrong on many occasions (lol).

    Pattayadavid

Whoa.... Lucky I started this thread....

OK... I have a firmware update... and I just downloaded the lateset version....

So now what do I do ??

I take it that I should NOT uninstall the existing DVD driver....

The download zip contains an exe.. Do I just click on the exe from the d/l folder and let it install itself...???

    Click and Forget about it?

Or is there something more complicated I must do?

Like "Flash" my drives??? Duh??? (Like what's that, man :D )

I just wish these computer had everything straitened out with them.. It's not like we are using modern Technology, is it?

These things have been around for ever.... What has it been.... around 30-40 years, give or take.

They should have all the bugs worked out by now... Wouldn't you think? :o

    CS

Like ballbreaker said.  If you've ever done a BIOS upgrade, this will be similar, but simpler.

  22. I've never used Norton Ghost as a result of my previous experience with other resource hogging products from Symantec, as others have pointed out. I have used Acronis products in the past and have been very happy with them. I have just completed a clean install of Windows Vista 64 and plan to install backup software soon. I am currently using Acronis Disk Director for hard drive partition management. I've also used Acronis True Image in the past and have a copy of version 10 and plan to install it soon, but like the OP, I would be interested to see if there is something better out there. Speaking of Acronis True Image, is there any significant improvement in version 11 over the previous version 10 which I have?

Also, I have 4 320GB hard drives configured as 2 RAID 1 systems. Is it possible to use one 750GB external hard drive, possibly split into 2 volumes or partitioned and use one volume (partition) to backup the 1st RAID 1 system and use the second volume (partition) to backup the 2nd RAID 1 system? Can this be done using Acronis True Image, Norton Ghost or by some other software means?
