  1. Does Work Permit work the same as DL?

Yes, in fact logic dictates it should only be WP holders who get Thai rates as these are the only foreigner's paying income tax in Thailand, and thus contributing to the upkeep of the parks via their tax, a DL means nothing, as a tourist can get one, so this shouldn't be used as a measure of getting the Thai rate or not and its most certainly not a measure of " residency "

I've worked and paid taxes here for almost 20 years. Now I'm retired, but spend money everyday and therefore pay VAT.

The driver's licence rule makes perfect sense.

Not to mention the tax drivers pay on fuel etc!

Excise tax is paid by even people who ride in taxis, it is not income tax.

Your logic is not verry logical.

I have no work permit, but I pay tax on everything I buy plus tax on the intrest of my bankaccount (that's income tax).

  3. My wife owns 3 investment properties in Australia 100% and not 49% (land and buildings) but I am forbidden from investing in Thailand. There should be laws that if a farang is banned in Thailand then Thais should be banned overseas. Won't happen tho as other countries welcome foreign investment no matter how small.

You can enter Thailand without a visa. Thais cannot enter Australia without a visa.

    Different countries.

  4. no one in their right mind would prefer to be in a relationship with someone much older. It's simply a trade off where needs must.If a young asian lady has a high education,is well qualified, and can earn more than enough to support herself, save, get a morgage,i dont think she's going to be looking at some old fella for a relationship. When i go back to sydney i see hundreds of young asian ladies, and they would not give me the time of day......they dont have to.

So come on guys do not be kidding ourselves...you want a young lady here you are going to have to pay for the priviledge.

My husband is 15 years younger than me. He makes more money than I do.

  5. "Hi-so" just means posh and stuck-up right? This is desirable in a wife?

    Perhaps you're right Brewster.

Then, the top bloodlines in this country are in another category.

The ones I speak of only marry same.

Yet from the very top family of Thai society there have been inter-racial marriages.

Enroll in a university, study whatever you want.

Only if the University offers courses in what is "wanted" to be studied and only if the applicant can meet the Universities admission criteria which is much higher than the usual "ed visa" language school qualification of "high school failure" !

AFAIK - the MOE only monitors grades from universities and not actual progress towards a degree. Private universities tends to be more flexible with foreigners that are non-traditional students. I know a few people who attended Bangkok University's International Program on the GI Bill.

I attended both Webster and Chula. (full ride at WUT)

I know people who have attended Ramkhampaeng and ABAC.

We (Thai hubby and I) are heading back to the US next year when his greencard is ready to study and work for a few years. Then we'll probably return here. (I have the employment history here to be comfortable and he's a leader in his field. But if we do it'll be to split time. Summers in Maine and Winters in Thailand.

I am sure you must be correct which would explain why many Thai university "degrees" have little or no academic credibility in the West or indeed in countries like Singapore or Taiwan .

Could be, but my spouse has a computer science degree from one of those schools and is in high demand with MNC's

I just screwed around and took classes that I was interested in. :)

  8. 10 years multi entry, now that is something thailand could learn from .. naaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaah

they like to show who is boss of every square meter overhere

my 'thai' parents in law have a nice xx million baht house in the US .... and in the US, they are not afraid they will steal the land and bring it to thailand in their suitcase

The US government should revoke this stupid law that allows them to hand out 10 year visas to Thais when American citizens get nothing like it in return.

Even more ridiculous is the fact that Thai passports are only valid for 5 years! How the hell can you issue a visa that is valid for years beyond a passport's entire validity?

China and the US, as well as China and Canada recently concluded bilateral deals on 10-year tourist and business visas. Citizens of all three countries have 10-year validity passports and as part of the agreement, an American gets a 10-year Chinese visa, while a Chinese person gets the same if going to America. Similarly for Canadians and Chinese as part of their agreement. The period of stay is 90-180 days at a time though.

Now that's what I call a fair agreement.

But the American-Thai one - ridiculous. No other country does it. The most Thais going to Australia can hope for is a 1-year multi entry with a 3-month stay limitation; Australians coming to Thailand can also get a 12-month multi entry visa, but not one that is based on tourism but rather, business (type B) or family reasons (type O). In the case of Thais going to Australia, up until recently Thais could generally easily secure the 1-year multi entry particularly if they have been to Australia before and complied with the conditions of stay. But of course they can't expect to use it for de-facto residence, doing one day or even one week visa runs between entries like Aussies on multi 1-year Thai visas can.

You need no visa at all to visit Thailand from the US.
  9. My salary is in the same range.

I get it 12 months. I have a full month break between 1st and 2nd semesters which I use to fly to the US.

During the long break I am free for a month and have to be around the school during the week (Tuesday,Wednesday Thursday) a few weeks. During those days I "teach" 1 hour a day.

Benefits include an awesome townhouse in a secure compound, free medical at work. Etc etc etc. (we have 2 swimming pools, etc)

Our students as have other duties and field trips, so there are about another 2 weeks where I don't teach.
