  2. Hello

Well it looks like due to work commitments I'll be in Nakhon for Christmas Day, just wondering if any body knows of anywhere doing a Christmas Dinner?

If not a western dinner - then perhaps a nice restaurant in which to celebrate the festive day?

    Appreciate any suggestions.

    Aimee

I was invited by Jennifer of "One More Beer" in Khanom for a Christmas dinner-party which will be held on a saturday (Dec 22nd) 'Coz most of the teachers in Surathani won't be able to come on a weekday. Interested?

Hey thanks for the invite - Khanom might be a bit far - I'm in Pak Phanang and only got the bike - does anyone know how far it is?? Don't fancy wobbling my way home!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  3. As some of you know, my wife's restaurant has a small collection of books for people to borrow. We rely on donations for our stock. However, the number of books being ''borrowed'' far exceeds the number donated! The collection is rapidly dwindling and I have moved the books upstairs until can create some book shelves and a management system.

I, like many others in Nakhon, find it hard to come by books, I rarely go out of the place and shun the tourist destinations where one can obtain English books. I have been giving the problem some thought and have an idea for a ''Foreign Language Community Library". The number of books in the restaurant at present is not great and relying only on donations will never amount to much. I feel something must be done to expand the library. Here are my thoughts.

I would like to issue a card entitling the holder to withdraw one book. A deposit of B150 would be charged, returnable on the return of the card and any book withdrawn on the card. Anyone donating 5 books would get a free card. If one did not return the card the deposit would be lost.

A charge of B15-25 would be made on each withdrawel. This would pay for the materials needed to run the system.

I would expect some to lose or keep the books they have borrowed. I would also expect there to be a profit for the library on the withdrawel charge. These profits would then be used to buy more seconhand books for the library.

With this system in place, with donations and purchases of books I think we could expect the library to grow.

    Your thoughts please

  4. I think the idea has always been to lend them to friends and share the word, so to speak, rather than try to make a profit from it. Sean's little library is great as it is (bring a book and swap it), and you can always have a cup of tea there...

Up to know people have been free to borrow books when they wish on trust that they will return them. This has not been happening and the selection of books has dwindled remarkably. I would like to keep this little 'library' going for the community, however there will soon be no books as people are not returning them. While I make no claim on the books themselves, I am going to insist in future that people leave a book for each book they take out.

Any donations would be most welcome to re-stock the shelves. Should, in the future, I leave Nakhon I will pass on the books to someone else interested in running this service.

No problem - I'll take a drive out to the restaurant this weekend and drop you off some books to refresh your supplies - I also have a few magazines - look forward to meeting you.

  5. I have motorbikes to rent .... B150/day. Enjoy the fresh air, save money and go on two wheels!

Hey thanks for the info everyone, I ending up using the guy in my Soi - its 1000 baht per day, and a fairly new pick up, - off to Koh Lanta tonight, looking forward to a weekend on the beach.

It's a shame that there is not a more reasonable rental place here- the one I used to use in BKK was about 3000 per week (based on rental 1 month or more) nevermind, its all sorted.

Trevor , you can still use my guy when you finally return, am having dreams about the Red wine and prawns at the cape, hurry up and come back so we can go out there again!

  6. Muang Tai Tour Nakhon, 0819786332 or 075 342768 !! I think he has a Toyota Yaris, Mitsubishi something and a truck. I think its 1,200baht a day and the guy doesn't speak English so you will need a Thai friend to call and go with you to pick up the car. Good luck

    Thanks. :o

  7. Does anyone know of any car rental places in Nakhon?

I normally rent a car off a neighbour in my Moo Baan but they have just doubled the price on me, so thought I'd see of there was any rentals available in Nakohn.

Prices and contact details would be brilliant!

  8. You should have a chat with Nakhosisean... He has a big oven and he should be able to make turkey. He also said a few months back that he would like that. (Might have changed his mind though).

Also check if his resturant is still open, I dont know so talk to him...

    Merry Christmas...

I would make turkey, if I had an oven, but I dont so I will not make turkey this year...

I am hoping to finally make it to his restaurant this weekend - so if he's around I'll ask

    Thanks Snowflake.

  10. Interesting - not every one working in the South is a teacher, so not sure if you are wanting info from other occupations? - But if so I earn about 500b per hour - based on a 45 hour week.

    When I was teaching - I also earnt 500 b per hours - but I only worked 2 hours a day :o very relaxing!

  11. I am interested in any feedback anyone may have regarding the mini-van/bus trips offered in Penang to Thailand - in particular Krabi. I am going to Penang soon and would be interested in taking the bus to Krabi - but wanted some information on what the trip is like etc, any feedback on this trip greatly appreciated!

If you can't do that, but can get to Hat Yai (220 baht from Penang) a couple of places I asked the other day were doing minibuses from Hat Yai to Krabi at 9am, 12:30pm and 5pm (though could vary by 30 mins each way) and the first price quoted was 350 baht.

Thanks I already have all the prices and times etc - just wondered if anyone has actually done the trip and what it was like.

  13. Hi!

Will someone coming from the US to Bangkok on a round trip ticket whose return date, also on a flight out of Bangkok, is 120 days after arrival have any trouble getting into the country with the 30 day on arrival tourist VISA? Two trips into Laos, along with an extended 40 day trip into Cambodia, Vietnam, Laos and China will ensure that no more than 90 days will be spent in Thailand; but this will be extended over a four month period.

From what I've been reading here and in other places, it does not seem likely that someone coming in like this will have a problem; but I am a little uneasy about it. I will appreciate any insights that others may offer about this.

    Jenny

I have never had a problem, but it is always possible

    Hi

It will depend on the airline and the staff at check in time - the airline is not meant to allow you to board if you do not have a onward ticket within the validity of your visa (in your case 30 days)

I was once required (by Qantas) to purchase an onward ticket - which was a very expensive exercise - before they would allow me to check in so if you can not get a visa before hand I would recommend that you bring you credit card with you and book a flight which is refundable.

  14. many thanks for the advice. I seems Home Pro will be my best bet. Im not after a luxury job something equivalent to MFI in the UK. I also have not seen a front loading washing machine that can be fitted under a worktop. I was twmpted to ask if I could come to you Scrabble evening but I dont arrive in Bangkok until the 22nd and then have an apartment to clear out and drive to Thammarat so I guess I will be too busy. Still if you have another one I would be interested

    Hi

Today a fellow popped by my house (I'm in Pak Phanang - 20km south of Nakhon) selling front loading washing machines - Lux brand - so they are available, here I got mine from Central in Bangkok, I'll look out for hi again and get his card if you are interested.

  15. Hello Gisele

Otherwise will join once I have wheels.

    Kind regards

Hi fellow Nakhon Si Thammarat dwellers,

I was wondering if anyone would be interested in participating in an evening of playing "Trivial Pursuit" and other board games like that?

I have a "Trivial Pursuit" game at home, not recent but it would do.

We could get together at my house or at another venue you suggest.

    Anyone game?

    :D

  16. I have never looked for houses around Paak Panang so do not know the market there. However, it is rare to find a furnished house around Nakhon. In five years here, I have only ever seen 3 furnished houses. If you are lucky it might have a bed and the odd bit of furniture. You will probably just have to budget for furniture.

    Thanks helpful as ever!

Yes have budgeted for the furniture!

    Thanks

  17. Hello

I am moving to the Nakon Sri Thammarat area (Pak Panang) around July. I am currently teaching at an International School in Bangkok, I would be moving to focus on study, but would like some part time work? If it was available.

I would also be interested in any information you could provide on cost of houses/ purchasing motobikes/car??

    Any help would be appreaciated!

  18. Hello

My question is very similar - I have a work permit and will finish work in July - my immigration stamp (connected to my WP) is to Feb 2008. I intend to stay on in Thailand where I am studying , what are my options visa wise? Do I need to do these visa runs? I am unsure of all the ins and outs as my employer has taken care of everything to date.

    Any advice appreciated.

    Aimee :o

Just change the extension of stay based on business to education. No need to do any visa runs.

Thanks - but I am studying at distance to my home university - ie I am not studying at a Thai School. Can I still change to Education?
