  1. Yep. On 3BB here, speeds have been capped at 120kb/s during 'peak hours', which basically means at all times from 10 am to midnight. I've called them and that's their reasoning anyway. Time to play the not paying game again.

All good for me in Lak Si Bangkok and Mahachai Samut Sakhon.

3BB, True (BKK) and TOT (SS Prov)

I just did a quick test here, and our 3BB, TOT, Sophon, CAT, and True connections are working without issues outside of Thailand.

So your actual download speeds can be maxed out or close to maxing out? The 150 KB/s thing did appear to be a ISP cap. I always get 940-1020KB/s at all hours of the day with TOT. This is something very recent they must have done (first noticed it on Sunday of this week). But why? Landline capping? It cannot be that serious.

Actual testing confirms that my 8 Mbit line still has the capability to download at that speed (from local Thai sites). All international downloads (so basically, all downloads) are virtually capped at around 100 kb/s. This does appear to be a recent development as my download speeds went from 900 kb/s to 100 kb/s virtually overnight, with the use of a download accelerator. I only noticed the change shortly after I came back from vacation about 4 weeks ago.

Like I mentioned above, they don't listen to your words, only your money. I've shown my dissatisfaction by not paying in the past here, especially with ISPs, and it really is the only thing that can force any change from their end. Get their managers involved, make a lot of ruckus, etc. The aim of the ISP customer service here is to keep you as a paying customer using a sub-par service by feeding you platitudes and trying to shove you in wrong direction in regards to where the problem lies.

Edit - And another note, do not trust the online 'speed' tests. For the most part, they're pretty much all rigged at this point, at least from 3BB.

  2. Never missing, but held up at Thai customs for longer periods of time for sure. I once ordered something from e-bay with a tracking number. I waited for 7 weeks *after* it arrived in Thailand to declare it missing and asked for a refund. 3 days after receiving the refund, my package arrived. It took customs 7 weeks to process my book.

Things move a bit slower here I suppose. :)

  3. Wow, thanks so much for the numerous replies! I must embarrassingly admit that I sort of forgot that I made this thread. I'm going to be checking out the store in Panthip. I'm pretty sure I want to get the Audio-Technica ATH-M50's, though I didn't manage to find them on those websites. But as has been said, I'll make my final decision when I get to test those and a few others.

Again, many thanks for the numerous thorough and helpful responses!

  4. I've been thinking about picking up a nice pair of headphones as I don't really own one that's even worth mentioning. I guess I don't want to really set myself on too strict of a budget because I understand that you're going to get what you pay for, for the most part. After a bit of reading and research, I've decided that I'm interested in a few models, for example:

    Audio-Technica ATH-M50

    Denon AH-D1001

    Denon AH-D7000

Anyone know where these brands can be bought and how much I should be expecting to pay? The first two are something like $150 in the US and the last is close to $1000. I don't really mind going that high, I just don't want to pay $800 dollars for a $150 product.

Any other input or feedback is greatly appreciated.

    Thanks!

  5. The Thais are a very personal hygiene directed people, They shower on the average 3-4 times a day, I have also picked up that habit. That is one thing I do hear Thais mention about falangs is that some of then have an aversion to bathing

I once had to change seats at a bar when a falang sat down next to me and his stink was over whelming,

The reason why bar girl give you a shower before any action, make sure you do not stink and to check your body for signs of disease.

You can be poor and have great personal hygiene habits, there is no excuse for not bathing often.

    Cheers::bah:

Honestly, the Thais I know don't shower half a dozen times a day. That is a complete myth. My rational guess would be that 1, maybe 2 showers on hot or active days are commonplace for the average Bangkokian. Besides, Thailand is a big country that encompasses a large number of people with different habits. Is anyone here really going to pretend that every, or heck, even most Thais keep themselves regularly clean? I don't want to rain on everyone's parade here but I have encountered plenty of bad smelling Thais. This isn't even uncommon, it just means they have a strong body odor (genetic) in a country that is located close to the equator where constant sweating is the norm. It's normal and healthy to sweat, so that's something you'll have to deal with. Every expat I personally know practices good personal hygene. The truth is that some people simply don't, Thai and others alike, and there's plenty of both.

Seems like another thread full of exaggerations, stereotypes and claims without sources. Classic ThaiVisa.

  6. I'm not willing to pay $200 for a video game. That's how much a console is supposed to cost.

The game costs THB2500 or about US$80

In the US it costs $60

Problem is the version they sell here is for the entire Oceania region, which includes Australia

That explains the high price to me. Steam makes games just for Thailand and are much cheaper (but they can only be played from a Thai IP address)

I must admit that SC2 is now my favourite RTS, beating Supreme Commander 2

Most fun I've ever had with an RTS

If only it had Lan Play :(

You're only getting the Terran campaign, hence a third of the game. Keep in mind that the other two campaigns are going to be sold as seperate installments which count as their own game, which means they're not expansion packs. Which means they'll be priced as high as this one. Which means you're paying at least $180 for all three campaigns.

Their excuse is that the game was simply 'too large' to release all at once. I hear the main campaign is something like 12 mission. I'm pretty much done with the Activision pricing schemes. It's sick.

  7. Quit months ago for the following reasons:

    1) Battle.net 2.0

    2) RealID

    3) Poor customer service

    4) Robert Kotick

    5) No path of the titans/ gimped archeology

    6) Community hitting rock bottom

    7) Gearscore

    8) Epics too common

I could go on. Truth is, it probably boils down to the deteriorated community and that every nook and cranny of the game has been data mined. I got a huge kick out of exploring, traveling and discovering. That was pretty much removed with instance queues. SW:TOR looks ok, but I've got my eyes on a few others.

  8. To be honest, I wouldn't ever really recommend any of the local beer to anyone I know. I suppose if I don't have a choice I'd stick to Leo, but I pretty much exclusively try to drink import beer (as horrendously overpriced as it is here) just because I can't feel good about giving money to a brewery that cares so very little about how its beer tastes. Cheers isn't beer. I'd probably drink month old sewage before I drink Cheers.

For good beer in Thailand, go to Tawandaeng. They make a fantastic wheat beer and their dark isn't too shabby either. If they bottled the stuff it'd be the only thing I'd buy here, even at 70-80 baht a yai.

Until the beer makers here go through a major overhaul on how they brew their stuff, I'm going to stick to shopping at Wine Connection and Foodland for my import beer.

  9. instead of speedtest here is a download rate from usenet at 18:00 today on True 16mb premium from a US based server in LA.

everyone is quick to blame the provider, look very carefully at your router stats Line Attenuation, SNR etc. before u shout that international bandwidth is low with your isp.

Lines in BKK are old, overhead cables, old condo wiring....

    screenshot20100610at180.png

Your rhetoric that the ISP is never at fault is the same crap I had to deal with True for 5 years. Under the same exact conditions, I applied for 3BB and their service was, to me, unbelievably better. For years I was told that my settings were wrong, lines were damaged, etc. But I switch provider and in one day I go from 15kb/s downloads to speeds that look like your screenshot. I expected much more from True living in downtown Bangkok. At least now I can finally stream youtube.

ISP's here in Thailand are far from perfect. In fact, they're far from good.

  10. Thanks guys. I didn't get it all at once, naturally. Projector first, though purchased in the US, cost roughly 32,000. I believe the sound system and receiver cost 38,000 so in total roughly 70,000. I know people who paid more for their LCD tv's so I usually don't feel like a huge spender anyway. I had an SDTV up until recently, and have been looking to upgrade to an HDTV for something like 5 years now, though they were always totally affordable for me (back then). I finally just bit the bullet end of last year and it was totally worth it! Full HD gaming really makes a huge difference.

  11. I pride myself in my gaming set up, so here it is:

    Optoma HD20 projected on a 92" screen

    Klipsch Quintet series III

    Marantz NR1501 HD A/V receiver

I use the screen as my computer screen as well. Operate everything from an L-couch. Gotta love wireless. :)

  12. One example from one ISP does not set the standard for package quality, consistency and reliability nationwide. I'd say you got it all wrong. Most packages and ISPs here are still terrible and volatile (ranging from .5Mbit to 8Mbit download speeds depending on time of day on a similar package to yours. Additionally, many users still suffer from unstable and highly fluctuating latency to areas outside of Thailand, especially the US. Congratulations on striking lucky with True, though, you're part of the small minority.

I ditched True after using their service for half a decade after I couldn't take their lackluster and unreliable service anymore. The worst part about them is the customer service. They simply don't care nor do they know how to fix any of the problems the users have. I feel like a fool for having subscribed to them for as long as it's easily the worst ISP I have ever subscribed to, by miles. I'm now on 3BB and pretty much sit in the same boat as you. Reliable connection, great latency, no disconnects. All going through the same phone line.

If there's one thing I'd tell to people who are looking for ISPs it's that you should never expect the service that you pay for, but rather, feel grateful when you get it.

A lot has changed with True internet since you left 5 years ago! Customer service is efficient if you raise a fault they will have a engineer out within 24 hours of your call. True internet has now the most international bandwidth of any provider. In my opinion and I have used all the providers available to central BKK that nothing is better than true PREMIUM packages i cannot comment on standard packages they offer.

I didn't leave. I only recently changed my ISP from True to 3BB. 2 months ago, I believe. True's service and the quality of the internet they offer is random depending on customer. I too have friends that can attest to a flawless connection while others on the same package are stuck with dial-up speeds and laggy latencies. All I can say is that with True, where I live, I got less than a 15 kb/s download speed from international sites without a download manager and youtube didn't even stream (8Mbit package). On my 3BB 12Mbit package, it never downloads below 500kb/s unless the server i'm downloading from can't upload any faster. Torrents clock in at max speed (1.2MB/s). Same phone line, same phone number, same router, same OS, same settings, same apartment. True said that improving my speed or quality would be impossible because my building's lines are damaged. 3BB set up their internet and I was gob smacked at the difference. I felt literally cheated, as a loyal customer, to know that the bandwidth that I was paying for was being allocated to people like in this thread, who get more than what they pay for. Never again. I would ultimately advise everyone to stay as far away from True as possible, at least their internet service.

  13. I think the old Thailand does not have the international capacity for bandwidth is no longer applicable.

The reason is your ISP has not purchased sufficient international bandwidth or the package you have selected with your ISP or your line quality or your router/computer setup.

Lets take the 16mb True Premium which I now use. Results as of time of posting (You cannot exactly say Thailand has a problem with international bandwidth anymore I get these speeds 24/7):

    841226897.png

    841229378.png

    841230092.png

So basically I am on the fastest 16mb product available for the Thailand consumer and that is more or less exactly what I get worldwide.

Lack of international bandwidth do not think so, Poor choice of package and ISP perhaps.

I think a lot of complaints of slow speed is due to line quality. For example the old'ish condo where we stay on the 33rd floor has terrible internal wiring (The True line to the building is new and of excellent quality and not far from the dslam)

now initially the wire pair they used to connect from the building exchange to my condo was giving a very low SNR and getting speeds of between 5mb-9mb on the 16mb True Premium package. (Talking router sync rates here not speedtest.net results).

After some persuasion i got the building to put me on a different wire pair to their exchange. Went from the above sync rate to (Sync rate of 18mb and max capable of 22mb)

One example from one ISP does not set the standard for package quality, consistency and reliability nationwide. I'd say you got it all wrong. Most packages and ISPs here are still terrible and volatile (ranging from .5Mbit to 8Mbit download speeds depending on time of day on a similar package to yours. 14. "Not to mention that behavior like that can get you into serious trouble in Thailand"

again, you patronise me. As though I've no idea about the differences in culture in this part of the world!?

An appropriate, mature response to being ripped off is what?

To be happy about being ripped off?

To *pretend* to be happy about being ripped off?

To walk away as though you weren't ripped off?

I kind of usually do go for the last one, but on this occasion, I thought the insult to me was especially obvious, so I returned a small part of that in a small gesture!

I guess I would interpret a mature response as saying 'Sorry, that's too expensive for me.' or simply saying nothing and moving on. Sorry if I don't find you bird flipping appropriate. And again, I'm not patronising you. I understand you have experience in this corner of the globe as a resident. Don't think that I'm being condescending when I'm merely pointing out the obvious.

Ok, I would normally agree, but I believe you had to be there to appreciate the context and the OTT audacity (not to mention stupidity - when there are literally dozens of other vendors nearby selling the exact same products) of the vendor, which I took as an affront. Probably (in fact almost definitely) in a different context, I would have simply laughed at them and moved on to buy at the next vendor.

By the way, regarding this whole "you should expect prices to be 'flexible' in Thailand/Asia" topic, I would argue it's simply a sign of an immature economy; as it was common practice in many other now major capitalist economies around the World, centuries ago. But here, the paradox is that parts of the economy are modernised and follow free market principles, while others are not. Why, is a much broader and complex question. Recent events, I believe, would be linked to it. But then, we are just talking about "a sausage" aren't we?

    :)

I suppose. At this point it is much ado about nothing. There are instances when you can really find yourself angry over overpricing (like when motorcycle taxis charge double for 'traffic') and you're pretty much screwed because you actually HAVE to pay the guy. Either way, I don't want to derail the thread further. Sorry if I came off as patronising.
