It does not matter that it is going to run out. It is better to go after the expiry date as when you get the new one it will be valid for 6 years instead of 5 years. This will give you the chance of doing it as I said and then you are definitely booked a slot.

True, but it matters if I'm driving without a current and valid license and get stopped at one of the fairly common police check points. Plus, I'm not sure insurance covers an accident with an expired license. Plus, cannot use it as a valid ID, for instance, to board a plane. I don't foresee the boarding a plane being an issue between now and 3 weeks but it did happen to me very recently and I had to take a 10 hour bus ride because I was refused boarding. I didn't have my passport with me due to extenuating circumstances. I will feel better having a new license ASAP.

You use the DLTR online booking system. You have to now watch this video and the questions asked can be in English even though the speaker talks in Thai. (Don't ask.) You are able to select that option. Take the screenshot of the QR code when you have passed this test. Take this to the DLT with your medical certificate and then at the appointed time you go and do the reaction test with the traffic lights and the depth perception test. All good and you will receive your new licence. This is what happened with me at DLT Bang Saphan.

Thanks worrab! Appointments weren't available for 3 or 4 weeks and my license is expired already 3/4 weeks. So I will have to jump into the fray come Monday morn. I'm driving around on eggshells. Got my med cert. Captions on the vid. were in English so no worries there. Cheers!

"Reporting back that this morning I was at Immigration (small building in the back for TM30, next to copy shop) and renewed a TM30 from 3 or 4 years ago as I have a new extension (Non-O based on retirement). I was still residing at the same address. The officer looked at only my old TM30 and my passport and filled in a new TM30. That's it. The cost was zero. I had tried doing it online with no success that I could discern."

Updating a TM30 filing (when necessary) is rather easy here at CM Immigration but I'm wondering why you did that.  Can you advise why you felt the need to do so?

Because I received a new extension which was switched from based on marriage to based on retirement. And I needed a cert. of residence. Maybe I didn't need to.... Nobody seems to really understand the mysterious, enigmatic, TM30. Not even Immi.

Wife listened to the video on the app in Thai for me, answered the question at each section, passed, then we went to the registry in the morning and did the brake/accelerator test, colour blind test and then press the button test, photo, pay fee and 5 year license provided.

I suppose every registry is different, don't forget the Dr's letter.

Yep, I got that today thanks!

I just renewed my 5 year a few weeks ago at the hangdong DLT in cm. I completed the video on the DLTQRlicense app and kept the screenshot of the QR code. They didn’t ask for it when I went in, just the red-yellow-green light test. There were a couple of expats renewing their 5 year as well, same thing, just the traffic light test.

Nova, did you catch what time it opens, please?

There's an online video you need to watch and answer correctly the questions that pop up in the middle of video. No idea about the English one, but Thai ones are quite straight forward, although video is all in Thai, by a man talking the whole time... It's basics, so you should know the answers to those off the top of your head (that is, if you can read Thai to understand what you're being asked). When you're done you're issued certificate which you need to bring with you to DLT.

Then it's appointment (at least at Chatuchak), and coming with health certificate on the day of renewal for the 3 tests mentioned above and if all passed, you get your new license printed after signing some forms and taking a photo.

To my chagrin, I cannot read Thai. How long ago was this, Tomaz? Perhaps they scrapped i/I hope they scrapped it!

  7. I had problems with two transfers from US. Both said they would arrive in seconds but after confirming the transfer the time for money to arrive changed to 15 hours. This continued for 5 days with Wise message continually expiring and reappearing with a new time/date. I called Wise and was told it was a hold up with Thai bank. I'm SURE this was baloney because no other evidence was showing and in fact Wise had sent a message at one point saying there was a slow down processing something or other. I was given a date two days later which was yesterday and it did finally come through. However, I am still waiting for another transfer which I did a day later. That is, last Friday. So a week has now passed and still it hasn't arrived. Usually, it takes mere seconds. To the point, I did another transfer today as I am in need of money and that one arrived in seconds. This slow processing did cause me problems as I had some bills to pay and they lapsed into overdue because the Wise money didn't arrive in its normal timely manner. Point being, one can usually, but not always, count on Wise to be quick. Plan ahead.

@bamboozled I'll try and explain where your thinking is incorrect.

The period of visa validity is different from the period of stay.  Visa validity is the period during which a visa can be used to enter Thailand.    The validity of a visa is granted with discretion by the Royal Thai Embassy or Royal Thai Consulate-General and is displayed on the visa sticker. The validity of a visa cannot be extended.
A single entry visa is 'used' on entry. A multiple entry visa 'expires' on the 'enter before date'.
Thailand's Ministry of Foreign Affairs (not Thai Immigration) are responsible for it's overseas Embassies and Consulates.

On the other hand, the period of stay is granted by an immigration officer upon arrival at the port of entry and in accordance with the type of visa. The period of stay granted by the immigration officer is displayed on the arrival stamp.  Travellers who wish to stay longer than such period may apply for extension of stay at offices of the Immigration Bureau.

An extension is an application to extend your period of stay and are subject to meeting criterial as defined in (internal) Immigration orders.
Extensions are permits (of stay), not a visa.

Got it, thanks for the input. I'm not used to doing extensions. I would get new, multi-entry, year long visas every year and do border bounces. I was never required to meet criteria such as funds in the bank...keep 800k or 400k or monthly transfers, etc... It was pretty simple. Now things seem less simple and I've got to up my game. There is a learning curve here.

When switching from 800k baht in the bank to income, there are multiple interpretations of the rules. The one I believe is most "correct" is that, in addition to the 12 monthly transfers from overseas, you must show 800k baht in the bank for three months after the last extension. This is to prove that it was your money and not a short term loan. The transfers show qualification via income for the new extension. If still using money in the bank for the new extension, you would need to show the 800k/400k/800k for the whole year.

That makes sense. In my view (which matters nought), what a PITA. I wonder if folks get called out on that.
