  1. I have an annoying problem with Google search using the latest version of Firefox. When I type in what I want to seach for in th bar, I only manage to get the first letter typed when the page turns white and I get up in the top left hand side you only get suggestions and you can't go any further. See the attached screen captures. My operating system is Windows 7 Utimate SP1 32-bit and the Firefox version is 20.0.

    Thanks for any kind suggestions.

  2. <snip>

Thanks for the insight into your desktop - fancy putting "Hatari" there, you must be a big fan haha.

Windows doing all these tricky AI-type things pushed me towards the linux community. Good luck, AA

And what a desktop! I guess you never worked in a company that had a "Clear desktop" policy. biggrin.png

The Hatari folder is the movie I'm downloading, btw.

  3. I only get more problems when I do a system restore, so I don't even go there. Go into Safe Mode and fiddle around? Wouldn't even venture there. A complete waste of time, Mr. Gates. I think a complete reformat and clean Window 7 install is the answer. But only when the annoyances mount up to an intolerable number.

  4. Yeah, I've seen all that. Methods 1-4 check out OK, and methods 5 and 6 don't apply to my computer. I'm beginning to think that Windows is morphing into some kind of artificial intelligence. It seems to know that the first thing I do after startup is double click the Computer icon on the desktop, and it's beating me to the click.

  5. Windows Explorer opens up on startup. This is an occurrance which just started happening out of the blue. No changes to the computer or its settings just prior and no other annoyances except this. Running Windows 7 Basic SP1. Thanks in advance for any insight to this recent computer infliction.

  6. Hey crab, this is annoying me as well. About a week ago, I upgraded my ADSL package and got a new Xyxel router from them. All I had to do to get connected was to plug it in. No username or password was ever required. I went to the True shop at Fortune to inquire about this, but all I got was more frustrated. I was directed from one "help" station to another, and all I got were clueless responses.

  7. I had one built for me at Banana IT for 8,900. I just chose the parts, case and power supply and they put it together for me. I'm using it for exactly what you'd be using yours for. Just a few suggestions. Go with an inexpensive Cooler Master case, a decent power supply, have the shop partition your hard drive (NTFS not Fat32), and you'll be just fine. Stick with Windows XP SP3 and install that yourself to make sure it's a clean install. This computer is the quietest, most stable and quickest computer I've had. Here are the specs and the programs I'm using.

  8. Exchange rate changes daily. No fees are charged on the Thai side. You should get a reference number to speed up the collection process and provide a question and answer on your side for security. Send these to you friend after you send the money. She'll need to bring her ID for sure, as well. CIMB Thai bank handles MoneyGrams.

  9. "Many older foreigners seem to marry Thai women so they can stay in Thailand under less strict requirements. Instead of needing to meet the requirements of 800,000 baht in the bank they only have to show 400,000 baht a year when married to a Thai. Additionally, many of these people seem to come to Thailand simply to marry much younger girls. In many cases they are old enough to be their father. I am concerned that these people are attempting to circumvent the rules by marrying innocent Thai women. If these people don't have enough money to retire then they shouldn't be here and become a burden to Thailand," Tawatchai Suksoom of the Ministry of Interior stated.

When was the last time you heard any Thai, even a Ministry official, speak English so elegantly and with perfect sense. Great April's Fools joke.

  10. Those are some strange frequencies there, namely jedec #1 and jedec #2. Can't say I've seen odd numbers like that. Typical frequencies are 400MHz (800) and 533MHz (1066) respectively.

BTW, you do in fact have 1600 RAM as indicated by XMP-1600. However, your memory frequency seems to be limited by the CPU front side bus. In order to raise the DRAM frequency to spec, you'll have to increase FSB. Some boards allow you to do this, some don't; refer to you motherboard manual.

Thanks again SuperNova. I've downloaded the manual for my MB and am reading it. No mention of overclocking , but it has an Intel TuboMode Tech feature that you can enable. Maybe I'll try enabling that to see what happens... or maybe not. If it ain't broke, don't fix it. Your help, again, was much appreciated.

  11. you purchased one of the cheapest 1156 boards and the cheapest CPU to go with because of the on-board graphics and now your questioning the FSB of the ram, yeah just leave the ram alone, don't go fiddling the bios as it should already be performing to your expectations.

You're right, I'm a cheap bastard, but I'm satisfied with the stability and speed of this "budget" machine, and the RAM will definitely not be over heating as it's only running at 20% with 10 programs open.

  12. SuperNova beat me to it. CPU-Z and looking at SPD gives you the manufacturer information from the memory module directly which will tell you if you got what you paid for. The speed shown in your test results may not necessarily reflect that as they are the frequency set in the BIOS. If SPD shows 800 then you have 1600 memory.

Aha! Thanks to you and SuperNova.

  13. <br /><font face="verdana, geneva, lucida,">DDR stands for Double Data Rate. SO any DDR3 (and DDR2) rating is double the actual speed. So ram running 650MHz is running DDR3 1300.</font><br /><font face="verdana, geneva, lucida,"><br /></font><br /><font face="verdana, geneva, lucida,">Seems like you got 1300's</font><br />
    <br /><br /><br />

I though it was something like that, but that still leaves me short of what I paid for - 1333 Mhz instead of 1600 Mhz.

  14. I wouldn't know what settings to do or how to go about doing that. I guess it would be done in the BIOS, I've been scouring the web for instructions, but get a headache over all the technical talk.

  15. I have a dual-core i3-540, but dual-channel Corsaire RAM. Should I expect the RAM to be running at the frequency I thought it would? I thought I bought the 1600 MHz strips, but seeing what I have on my computer after setting it all up, I really don't know what kind of RAM they sold me. See the snapshots, and please help me to understand.

  16. Cheers guys. So if I don't have an iphone its easy enough to get a 3g sim?

Any particular air card better than the others?

I think the best place now for a good selection of 3G packages from different providers, and for a great selection of 3G dongles is a shop named "Program". It's on the third floor of Fortune, near the top of the escalators, sort of across from True.

  17. I ran the FREE AVG for years but started getting problems over the last 12 months, scrapped them, and use AVAST which is free and appears to be doing fine and machine is much quicker.

Yeah, the free AVG was running fine on my friend's computer for the last 18 months or so, but it eventually led to his machine not being able to boot. He needed a complete reinstall of Windows. I put on the free Avast for him, and it's been working flawlessly. I like how you can right click the tray icon and choose to disable the shields control for 10 minutes or an hour. This is useful when opening something you know isn't a virus.

  18. Thank you everyone for all the suggestions. I held my nose and installed a fresh copy of Vista Ultimate. I cringe at the thought of having to run this nightmare of an operating system, but this HP computer (HP Pavilion dv7-1207tx) basically requires that you run Vista, as the downloaded drivers are only for that OS. I still came up one driver short, but was easy to just download it from their site.

Drive C was a disaster, but luckily the installation DVD gave you an option to format the drive before installing Vista. I couldn't even format the drive from DOS. Missing the Boot Manager or something to that effect.

Overall, it's much better that the factory install that came with the machine, with all 23 HP programs running in the background and always wanting to update this or that.
