  1. To teach a language, does 1 need to be a native ?

I think its a good start to be native at least! As just yesterday I was speaking to a friend of a friend that is Chinese's and he is a qualified Chinese teacher here in Bangkok, and he was joking to me that there are French and Spanish English Teacher here in Thailand with heavy accents. He taught it was hilarious!

Don't shot the messengers here please.....

well, your friends probably "thought" and not "taught".... this from a non-native English speaking Swiss...

the majority of my language teachers (for German, French, English, Italian) have NOT been native in the languages the taught but had the proper education and degrees to teach those languages. And honestly, reading on this forum, there are quite a few English native speakers who's English would not get them through Swiss High School exams...

and since you are talking about a weekend camp... what level of English are the kids supposed to learn? Basic sentences like "where do you come from" (English version) or "where you come from" (Thai version) or "what is your name" (English version) or "what you call" (Thai version)? For basics, you don't need native speakers, just somebody who can speak, read and write the language without making too many mistakes.

It's always amusing to see the many basic mistakes made by the grammar and spelling police, especially in threads dealing with the English language. smile.png

I'm just having some fun with you. I actually agree with you that much of what's being written here by native English speakers with strong opinions on this subject leaves a lot to be desired.

  2. BANGKOK: -- THE ACADEMY of Facial and Reconstructive Surgery urged Thai physicians yesterday not to attend training courses in South Korea, as it has learned that the lectures were not provided by qualified personnel and that they lacked proper accreditation.

Since when has lack of qualifications or accreditation been of any real concern? Is it possible the Bangkok Academy of Facial and Reconstructive Surgery is more concerned with losing paying customers to those crafty Koreans?

You might be on to something. More and more Asians are heading to South Korea because it has many of the best plastic surgeons in the world. Judging by all the bad nose jobs I see in Bangkok on a daily basis, I doubt the Koreans will be worried about Thailand passing them by anytime soon.

  3. Anyone plugged in might suspect this is part of effort to promote Thailand as a medical hub for such procedures and to erode S. Korea's spot in all this. Next, we'll be hearing similar stories RE India and eye surgeries, etc.

Have you forgotten about the lousy Medical Care in England, United States, France, and Switzerland that is why all thew rich come to Bangkok or Pattaya for medical

"lousy medical care in Switzerland"??? coffee1.gif ever been to a Swiss hospital? you know how the system works here?

Was Harry joking? America also has some of the best medical facilities for the rich. I don't think many of them are coming to Thailand for medical treatment and almost none for plastic surgery.

  4. An article based on misplaced nationalism and the desire for big face as Yingluck isn't asked to join in Angelina Jolie's campaign for better female health care she has to " upstage her ". It says Jolie's efforts will be forgotten in decades but Yingluck could go down in history which may well be true but nothing to do with health care issues.

Living in the present Jolie will achieve more than the PM could ever dream of as she is known all over the world whereas Yingluck is well, known in Thailand but I could be very wrong as this is the " hub " of everything.

Pretty much what I was thinking, not to mention the fact that some (most?) of the stats used in this article are so far off. Considering the source, that's to be expected.

  5. Farang = Foreigner so Farang Food = Foreign Food.

Not sure of the point the OP is trying to make ?

Not true mate, Falang is used strictly for Western Caucasian foreigners. People of Mid Asian decent are called "Khun Khek", Chinese are called "Khun Cheen" and so on. Foods are given similar post fixes, Western foods are called kin Falang, Mid Eastern foods - kin Khek, Chinese foods - kin Cheen.

I'm not Caucasian but I've been referred to as a farang ever since I got here. So have many of my non-white Westerner friends.

  6. We have an opening for a part-time personal assistant job that could mostly be done remotely but does require some meetings in Bangkok and some travel inside Thailand. If things go well, the position could become a full-time job.

We are going to invest in some real estate projects and need a Thai personal assistant who is fluent in Thai and English to help us with Thai paperwork and contracts, some research, communicating with other Thais involved in the projects (contractors, government officials, etc.) and visiting some job sites with us.

If this sounds interesting to you, please send me a message. We will need to review your CV/ resume but we want to get started soon, so you should hear back from us very soon after you send us your information.

  7. So the party that was in bed with Newin Chidchob and depended upon him to get into office is complaining about banned politicians being involved in elections?

If Newin Chidchob was involved in election campaigning for the Democrats, I'm sure PTP would have lodged a complaint by now.

How does it work? Banned politicians can be involved in politics but cannot be seen publicly campaigning during an election?

  8. OP, I understand your pain. When you want your favorite beer, you want my favorite beer, whether it's Bud, Chang, or Chimay.

I've seen it at either the grocery store in Emporium or the one on Suk soi 11. I'll be at Emporium tomorrow and if I see it I'll report back to you.

  9. I'll buy one round based upon that, but sorry no all nighter. You understand. :)

    Thanks for your service.

I'm a cheap date. One Coke Lite is enough for me. :)

(As an aside, having been to BUD/S, even just the 3-week indoc course, I know enough of SEAL culture and the training lingo to catch all the wannabe SEALS I have met over the years. It is pretty fun to debunk them.)

First I usually figure out if they were even in the military, then if they were a SEAL/whatever. Takes two innocent sounding questions, three max. If they don't pass, I leave it alone and leave them alone. Haven't met many of these guys though. Actually heard about more of them when I was in the military. Every now and then some guy would get in trouble for wearing a trident on his uniform but idiots like that would have run into trouble eventually any way.

  10. I'm a former Navy Deep Sea Diver. Lived in the same barracks next to the Hotel Coronado as the guys going through BUDS and had two high school friends become SEALs (including the one I used to protect from bullies). Anyway, I'm up for a beer to celebrate, free or not.

  11. This discussion is generating a lot more heat than light - but as many of the contributors can't spell were/where, they're/their, Canadian's/Canadians or to/too, then this hardly surprises me.

Sarcasm alert: I agree. So irritating. It reminds me of people who can't tell the difference between 'the' and 'they'. So annoying. Kind of like your previous post:

Many tourists flock here, year after year, because the find the anarchy here 'such fun' and a relief from the stifling bureaucracy they live under!

Don't worry, I won't judge your opinion using the same criteria that you do for other posters. I actually agree with much of what you wrote after your spelling rant.

  12. From the clip above, "More PAD starting trouble in Khmer territory. Don't they have airport they have to hijack?." Khmer soldier arresting the 7 yellow shirt PAD/MP.

Must be quote of the year.

It would be interesting to hear an actual translation. The person who posted the video obviously took a few liberties when providing the translation.

Unless the aim was to preach to the choir, the commentary left much to be desired as well.

  13. This desire to preserve the purity of a language is quite common, and ultimately bumps into reality of concepts that came into existence in the last 100 or 150 years. I once wrote a dictionary of science in another language and had to deal with these issues. Concepts like element are easy enough to replace with an indigenous word, but try aberration, achromatic, aerodynamics, anion, Doppler effect, eutectic, isothermal, photon, X-ray, colloids, ions, electrolysis, etc. Then look up these concepts in multiple and unrelated languages. The practicality is that these are international terms varying only in the tonal qualities of pronunciation across borders.B)

Then again, what has allowed English to grow as a global language is precisely the tolerance it allows to acquiring additional vocabulary.:whistling:

Many people seem to think that Chinese will be more useful than English in the future because of a rising China but the actions and attitudes of the Chinese government prevent Chinese from becoming a global language useful to non-native speakers.

  14. I'm looking for ideas of fun places to take a girl on a date. I live in the Ratchada area but it doesn't need to be here. I'm usually up for something like going ice skating at Esplanade, going to an amusement park, etc. Nightlife with good food and entertainment is fine too.

Just looking for something more interesting than dinner and movies. If anyone has any good ideas, I'd appreciate them.

  15. So anyone heard of any arrests of foreigners that showed up with 20k and a ticket at the airport?

    Anyone blacklisted...?

The only people to report back here with first hand knowledge about this are people who overstayed, paid the fine and had no problems. As I stated in the other thread, I was well past the 42 day mark and had no problems. No questions asked, paid my fine and was allowed back into Thailand. I know two other people who were also past the 20,000 baht point, read the news report here and cleared their overstays without any problems or questions asked.

I'm not going to overstay again because it's just not worth the risk to me but the situation seems to be business as usual. If it turns out that the report was true and the policy will soon change (it hasn't yet) I will be thankful for the warning. If it was a false report, I won't really care.

  16. To promote sex? Don't you thing Thailand have enough sex already?

No, not to promote. To use Western-style teaching in a public light to show that Thaialnd is a "good people" and don't want children to get pregnant. I firmly believe the King does not want teens getting preganant then not going to college, getting a good job, etc. unless that is what they truly want for themselves. In the ends, it's money, however, that drives such things. It's like the AIDS... Westerners "You have AIDS." Thaiand "We don't have aids." Westerners, "You have aids we will give you money." Thaland, "OK. We have aids. What is it?" These programs tend to backfire from what I have seen and more kids end up getting pregnant because they have a new entity saying sex is ok to talk about and explore where mom and dad and foo say "wait".

And, there is never too much sex between consenting partners, sis :) If your sex isn't good enough to agree, strongly consider changing partners.

These programs tend to backfire? Can you give any examples of these programs leading to increased pregnancies?

  17. I finally tried out Duke's on Sunday and I will definitely be back. Best burger in Bangkok? I'm not sure if there is such a thing, as everyone has different tastes and restaurants have good and bad days. However, it was the best burger I've had in a while and despite the location, seemed to be at a lower price than comparable burgers around town.

I forget the name but I had the burger that comes with blue cheese, onions and bacon. It was excellent. I had salad and a bottle of water and it came out to just over 300 baht. If you don't love blue cheese, the taste may be a bit overpowering but it was way better than what I expected and I will definitely be having another one soon.

To my right, there was a guy eating something with pasta, I forget what. He liked it enough he was asking about what went into the pasta. To my left there was a family of five. The kids were devouring their food. The pizza looked very tasty.

I tend to have just one or two favorite dishes that I eat each time I go to a restaurant, so I'm afraid I won't get around to trying many of the things on that menu; next time I plan to have that exact same burger.

Side note: when I was there, the service was excellent. The big boss was there at the time and that may have something to do with it.

Oh, my hands were a mess after eating that burger, so I just went to the nearby bathroom and washed them before I went back to pay my bill.

  18. To the OP, I think age is probably the biggest factor. If you're looking for a possible long-term relationship, most single, professional guys like me who look forward to starting a family some day are interested in someone significantly younger than you. If you're looking for something less serious, again, there are plenty of young, beautiful, fit women here that you have to compete with. It doesn't help that their standards are probably lower than yours.

You say you are in your forties. Many posters are talking about 40 when it is much more likely to mean somewhere between 44 and 49. I never hear people who are 31, 41, 51, 61, etc. say they are in their 30's, 40's...

The women I've had the longest relationships with in Thailand have been women who were either born in the West or were educated there for a significant period of time. Back home, I mostly dated Chinese American women. I'm actually looking forward to going home soon and meeting more women like you. If you're not too happy with your selection here, you may need to do the same. Still, if you looked at any of the online dating sites, there are probably a lot of local guys who would be very interested in you. The question is whether or not you'd be interested in them as well.
