Australia which has one of the strictest quarantine regimes has found how difficult it is to contain outbreaks via hotel workers. For months now there have been no locally acquired cases. The only positive cases have been with people in quarantine or a small number of hotel workers that caught the virus despite incredibly strict non contact rules.
I cannot see how a "sandbox" would be able to contain the virus with the constant movement in and out of workers.

When you say "operate" do you mean own the business or just work in one.
Most replies seem to assume you mean to work or manage the business.
Does any prohibition also mean you cannot "invest" in a business owned and operated by a Thai. E.g. you lend money to a partner that then has to repay you with interest.

A year in the army might be an interesting "gap year" experience for him and a useful skill in his cv.

Let the bank foreclose.
If it really is a bank loan then she will still get the difference between what is "owed + costs" and the forced sale price. If there has been any sort of capital appreciation she could still walk away with a tidy sum. I would not worry about her welfare. You and the aunt then should ask for your "contribution" back. You wont get it but it might give her something to think about.
But it actually sounds more like a gambling debt to a loan shark. I'd get out before it's just "the cattle get sick"

This is a very important situation. Assuming they were official police and assuming it is legal for them to to make random checks then they should be trained to introduce themselves and display their is when they first approach you.
As has been pointed out already you have no way of knowing they are genuine. They could be trying to obtain personal information for fraudulent purposes.
Either they were breaching their own procedures or the RTP are too incompetent to have a proper procedure.
Either way it does not encourage confidence in the authorities .

Ninety dollars postage and AUD120 import duty for some sunglasses even if they are Raybans sounds like it might be cheaper to just walk away and not collect the "present".
Its the thought that counts anyway.

Perhaps the "new rules" mean they really mean it this time

I have no intention or desire to live here full time but i am a frequent visitor coming 3 or 4 times a year for periods of one to three months. The current visa rules are quite satisfactory and i have never had a problem.
However, the regular reinterpretation and inconsistant application of the rules makes me wary and nervous each time I come back.

A 15 day emergency work permit can be applied for and should be issued within 1 working day.
WP10 application form is here. http://wp.doe.go.th/wp/images/form/Form_tt10.pdf
Thanks Ubonjoe for that information and the link.
My apologises for not defining the acronym FIFO. "Fly in, Fly out" is correct but I was thinking of unscheduled emergency situations rather than rostered rotation.

Ok I know everyone has to have work permit and as a specialist consultant on short term contract I probably have enough time to organise one, just.
But i wonder about specialists like engineers that might have to fly in on just 24 or 48 hrs notice to fix sophisticated machinery that is costing millions sitting idle. How are they covered?

Today I went to get a two month visa in Vientiane. There was a big sign up saying that you must state your intended Guesthouse address in Thailand or visa may be refused.
I am actually chartering a yacht in Phuket, so I gave the marina address. This confused the clerical staff no end. She even had to check the meaning of word boat in her phone. She went away to check with supervisor, not good enough, must give address of hotel or guesthouse. After a futile attempt at explaining what a yacht charter means I gave up and totally invented a guesthouse name in Phuket.
All happy.
Tell the truth ... no good .... lie, everyone happy. Ssssheesh!!!!

What about banks like Aust where people often have mortgage offset accounts to minimise interest.
Any wages/income is automatically credited to their mortgage and they draw down progressively during the month for living expenses. They never have a credit account.

These monkeys are very territorial. Releasing them into another groups territory is going to cause enormous conflict with a lot of injury and death.
Managed and humane culling to reduce the population to more natural levels is a far better solution.

Can someone clarify what exactly is meant by "visa free".
Does it mean no fee to pay for the various types of visa. Surely it does not mean you do not need a visa at all. There must still be different types of visas with different conditions.
I assume it means you can get a visa on arrival at no cost. It's very ambiguous to call it visa free.

should not be too difficult to locate a gang leader with a name/alais.as reported and as well known as this group seems to be.
even the rookie BIB should be able to find this eleusive fellow as the locals seem quite famaliar with the group and apparently pay them a few bob to stay off their hit list. the gang is probably drunk/dopped up, passed out from their ill gotten gains. they are probably in no condition to find a shade from the sun sop easy picking for the BIB.
Wasn't it under Taksin that lots of alleged drug pushers in Bangkok accidently got shot and died "resisting arrest".
Ooops sorry, I'm getting confused with the US.
It is a popular sport on Thaivisa to criticise Thai police, and deservedly so in many cases,, but we should realise that our own police forces are not squeaky clean either.

The line thru Laos was first announced 4 years ago to be up and running in 2015 ......

Criminals can always get guns in virtually every country. I doubt that the sawed-off shotgun used in Sydney was legal.
The US has the world's 3rd largest population and a lot more of almost everything occurs there, including negative news.
The gun homicide rate per capita in the US is actually below the world average for countries even though gun ownership numbers are far above average. LINK
Your link takes you to a website called the "Crime Research Prevention Centre", which claims to publish "academic quality research" but is in fact a front for a pro-gun site founded and run by a noted conservative Fox News columnist. It is not a reputable or peer reviewed site for data.

Actually, i had a student very similar to this, I made sure he was involved in every lesson, gave him the homework to distrbute and used him as the ( whiteboard writer), Had him wipe the ( windows10 screens) and used him as a demonstration model when i was teaching body parts and/ or names of clothing....It worked brilliantly. Children are empty vessels that need to be filled with knowledge and there are many ways to achieve that goal. Sometimes it may be left side or out of the box, but so what ?, use what works
As an ex-chalkie myself (from the days when we still used real chalk) I used a similar technique. Many kids are attention seekers, some seek it by being "good" others by being "bad". Teachers want to be "fair" and resent giving unwarranted attention to the "bad" kids but if you give those kids the extra attention they seek you can often redirect their behaviour in a more positive direction.
Instead of yelling at the kid or throwing them out of class and shunning them the rest of the time I used to try an engage them in friendly personal conversation outside the classroom. In many cases they would then begin to feel they had a special relationship which they did not want to jeopardize in the classroom and their behaviour in the classroom would change dramatically.

I caught a minivan to Pai once. The driver was so bad, cutting corners and speeding I almost became a Christian.

You hear a lot about the sleazy teacher that hits on students and it is right and proper that these scum are exposed and sanctioned but you rarely hear about the student that offers themselves willingly for extra grades and favours. Its happened to me at least three times. It goes without saying that any teacher that goes along with it should be criticised and sanctioned

‘Billions of Baht worth of Assets’ .. Even if it’s only 2 billion, that’s more than $70,000,000 and could take an awful lot of explaining. It’s a shocking amount of money & property to be found in one persons home, but perhaps more shocking to me is the initial response from some of my Thai colleagues. Many seem to see whatever’s been perpetrated here as a 'victimless crime', and in a way, see these people as being good at what they did, except of course, when it came to getting caught. They seem to think that those assets have materialised out of thin air and can’t see that whatever’s been taken has been taken from some person, or from some organisation. They simply can’t see that this, along with the many other forms of corruption here, is taking money directly out of the economy, and indirectly, out of their own pockets.
Hat’s off to the authorities for going after the juicier fruit.
Sadly, there is much the same sort of attitude to corruption by the ruling elite in Laos . Instead of outrage by ordinary people there is passive acceptance verging on admiration for the way these people have manipulated the system and a desire to copy them.
It is the same when it comes to cheating in education institutions. Most really don't see it as something wrong. Their main regret is they do not have the money to cheat themselves.
There is little understanding of how corruption is a cancer that affects everyone in the country.

There wont be many tourists from Australia where you have to get permission from the govt to leave the country then spend more than $3000 on hotel quarantine when you get back ....
