  1. Although this sounds completely insane, there is underlying reason - namely a B387 million fund to plunder.

Consider an analogy - you have serious cut on your leg. Do you arrange for continuous blood transfusions or stitches?

Sand is mobile stuff. If you want the beach to look like it did in 1952, you need to look at what has been changed since then which may have altered the wave and current patterns, and then remove the alteration. Or, construct breakwaters/groynes to slow the movement of sand so that the amount eroded is less than that arriving. But that is a one-off cost, much less amenble to long term pilferage.

Totally agree with this comment. There have been numerous attempts to remedy similar situations around Oz, it usually has simply moved the problem to some other area of the nearby coast line.

Not an easy task and given example of other public works in Pattaya, doubtful if beneficial results are likely.

  2. From Thailand you can send photocopies in lieu of passport - why it goes via Hong Kong, maybe keeps 2 mp's in expenses somewhere in the uk until they actually think of sending them directly to uk. That might be next years directive

The application doesn't go via Hong Kong, it goes to Hong Kong where the passport is produced.

As I read it, that at some time in the future you will apply directly to the UK, they will produce your new passport and send back. I renew mine in the UK when I'm there, almost half the price.

Of course Thailand can produce a 50 page passport, complete with a biometric chip in a few days, doe 1000 Baht - Amazing Thailand.

Unless of course you happen to be a Thai national living in Australia. There you will have to wait for the mobile renewal service to visit your area perhaps twice a year, instead of travelling across the country to Canberra or Sydney. After attending an appointment with the service, say in Perth, you may wait up to seven weeks(this year, five last time) for the new passport to arrive. The chip is in the passport sure, but the holder is provided with no instructions on how to use it in the manner intended. Has BKK airport got the required machines installed yet to allow usage of the chipped passport?

  3. Most of the supermarkets (Tesco, Carrefoure, Big C, etc) have a branch of Se-Ed bookstore. As far as I can tell all the books are in Thai language and most are non-fiction.

They also have an online shop - but as I don't read Thai I'm not sure whether they will deliver abroad.

Thank ee sir, the books we bought last year were from a shop with a very limited range in Big C Pattaya, Se-Ed?? not sure. I did intend to go back there this trip but will check out their outlets whilst in Bangkok now I have a name to look for. Thanks again.

  4. Hi Guys,

Once again I like someones assistance for my next trip to LOS in November this year. When we (me, wif,e daughter) were up there last year my wife happened on a Thai language Biography of Rama IV . She has read this over and over since that time and as my daughter and I are travelling without her this year, I've been asked to obtain similar subject (thai history in Thai) books. Does anyone have any idea what retailers that carry such are available, and where in Bangkok and Pattaya I can find them?

    Thanks!

  5. I imagine the kid woluld have had at least some long tricky questioning by the authorities and kids dont hold up to well under interogation so their must have been a case that was at least beyond reasonable doubt to arrest the man, at least one would hope so

Kids, especially kids of this age, often agree with whatever a person of authority (parent, teacher or Police) wants them to say.

Guilty at this point who can say? But I wouldn't like some of they guys here to be on the jury as they seem to believe guilty until proven innocent and that's sad.

  6. Caused entirely by lack of proper maintenance of track and sleepers, as we all know. State railways of Thailand are bankrupt and lose the counrty millions of baht every year. The only answer, of course, is massive investment but if they don't, rail travel in Thailand will be become more and more hazardous. It's such a shame because the railways in Thailand are such an under-used resource. Take Bangkok-Pattaya for example. Despite an 8 lane motorway and buses trauling up and down every 30 mins or less, we still have one train a day (!) in each direction and the departure from Bangkok leaves so early that it misses the arrival times of the long distance overnight trains from north and south. So it's impossible to travel from. say, Chiangmai to Bangkok overnight and then on to Pattaya in the morning. Wonder which brain box thought that one out!

I would agree that the railways need a cash injection. In past years I've used them between Bangkok and Chiang Mai, Surat Thani to Bangkok, as well as between Bangkok and Hua Hin or down to Hat Yai. Good service, quite reliable and inexpensive.

I can't agree that there was a failure in respect to the connection times for the train to Pattaya, after all most of the passengers from the north (Chiang Mai) are Thai going back to Bangkok, few of them would be looking to go on to Pattaya.

18 years in jail for 'Da Torpedo'

    Writer: BangkokPost.com

    Published: 28/08/2009 at 12:19 PM

The Criminal Court on Monday morninng sentenced Daranee Chanchoengsilpakul, alias Da Torpedo, to 18 years imprisonment for lese majeste.

The court ruled that Ms Daranee, a United Front for Democracy against Dictatorship member, made several remarks deemed to be lese majeste in a speech on the stage at a UDD rally at Sanam Luang on June 7 last year.

The court sentenced her to 18 years in jail without suspension.

    More article,

In some countries and for lesser offence she would probably have been given the suspension (by the neck) rather than jail time.

The Reds won't be happy until Taksin is supreme ruler, neither will Taksin of course.

  8. chonburi,

I just did a renewal on my Thai i.d in BKK two weeks ago.

Mine was expired since last October. It wasn't busy at the umpher by the time I walked in. Went to one of the ladies at the counter, handed her my old card, she said 120 baht, I handed her 2x100 baht bills, and got my change back, she handed a sheet of paper for me to sign. Few minutes later, the other lady had my picture taken, waited a few more mn, then walked out with my new i.d..

Words of encourage, there are some nice people working at the umpher too, just hope your Mrs. is lucky enough to get a good one who takes pride in therir job, not the mean one who looking to make extra bucks.

    Have a great day!

Thank you Tinkelbell and everyone that replied to my query. Your answers have made my wife so much more comfortable at the thought of going to get this done.

  9. Ubon

The problem is ....diff amphur will still charge you differently, because they think they can. Also it depends on whom you are dealing with at the amphur at the time and the lenght of expiration.

However your fine shouldn't deviate too far from the 200 bths set fine.

Yeah it's just that sort of local bastardy that concerns me, but it's really the fear of authority that seems to be inherent in many Thais that gets to my wife. She has heard figures like 200-300Bht but fears that the amphur might multiply that by the number of years since renewal eg 18 x 200 = 3,600Bht, times a fear factor of 10. Many girls from small villages with limited exposure to authority have such fears, eight years ago the Immigration guy at entry in Don Muang gave her a hard time because she never had her old passport with her that showed her date of leaving Thailand which had been 10 years earlier.

  10. no problem but the amphur will want some late fee, they wouldn't give her any trouble

My stepsister had to pay around 300 bths when hers expired about 20 yrs ago. This was a few years back, in Bkk

That sounds OK even if fees/penalties have increased by a factor of 10 since that time. My wife is evisaging 30,000Bht which would be ridiculous. I'm saying if that was the case forget it, as I'm sure it's not essential if she has a current passport. Thanks for that.

  11. My family and I will be back in Thailand for only the second time in 18 years. When my wife presented herself for the new digital passport here in Oz, one of the ladies doing the fingerprinting and photographing made a big thing about my wifes identity card (which are issued at the local amphur) was so long out of date. My wife wants to renew this card on our visit but is concerned that the Amphur will give her a problem and may demand an extortionate amount to get this done due to the period since the last renewal.

Does anyone have any experience or knowledge in respect to this matter? All asssistance will be much appreciated.

  12. The current government is illegitimate.

The PAD LOST the last election.

Do they think they can ride rough shod over democracy and expect the voices of the people to be silent?

    There will be blood............................

Sorry but you need to get your facts straight.

PAD is not a party, it has never been in an ellection and is not (part of) the government.

The current government is 100% legitimate. The current prime minister has been democratically elected by the Parliament.

The current government (as it is now) is not the one that was elected, as the P.P.P and it's coalition partners were ALL dissolved BY LAW because of vote buying

Well said jbhh. Nice to see that someone commenting on this sad state of affairs actually knows the facts about the legitamacy of the government. Of course like the mob on the street, there are those voicing their opinion on this forum who either don't know, or don't care, or both.

  13. Just came back from town witnessed taxi upon taxi pass by full of read shirt supporters and an entire lorry load full of them waving their flags. Police seemed to be posted along every road but what’s the point they don’t seem to do anything?

I am not taking sides here I don’t know enough in detail about the facts on both sides but it seems to me to be a major embarrassment for this country that all this should happen. I feel sorry for Thailand. I wonder what ordinary Thai people make of the red shirts and yellow shirts and their antics?

Not too different to the way the Bikie gangs here in Oz can move around breaking many traffic laws and probably other laws in the process.

From an outsiders perspective the Reds are incited and to some extent funded by Thaksin and his supporters and as someone said earlier it may well be a case of Republicans versus Monarchists. Thaksin certainly gave the impression that he considered himself to be more of a President than a Prime Minister and paid little respect to the Thai culture and Head of State, the King.

What would you have PM Abhisit do, loose the Police and the Army onto the Reds? He would certainly go down as a villain rather than a hero if he did/does. Some of the past history of unrest needs to be remembered, where the Police and Military were allowed free rein, many of the students of the day who protested are still missing.

I don't have an answer for the dispute between the opposing parties but I think the current softly softly approach is better than a Government approved suppression action by the Military and or Police.

As for the 'Loss of Face' better that than a loss of lives.

  14. The much maligned Pattaya Taxi-meter guys will happily do a day's driving for you.

I use them regularly to go to various consulates in Bangkok, wait for me and drive me back. Khun Santi on mobile 085-180-2415 or 080-099-0268 as an example.

No problems at all and most indicate that they are willing to do full day hire.

Or private taxi services - Da Taxi at 085-285-4196 - or Somkid Haboonme at 086-163-7445

    Thanks HB,

Very useful info for me and the lady for the trip back to the village, can't stand the bus trip and I'm told it's all changed from when we used to catch one bus to Chonburi, then change to another one to get to Bangpakong.

  15. I use a guy called pau. 0812914297 speaks reasonably good english, jolly fellow, very safe driver he has a 4 door pickup in good condition and is very easy to get along with. My friends and I always use him when we dont want to drive our cars

Thanks for that I'll keep the info to hand, any idea what he currently charges?

  16. I will be returning to Pattaya in October this year along with wife and daughter. The lady wife wants to go out to Bangpakong and see the family, as well as renew her identity card (20 years out of date) at the local amphur. I'd like to hire a car and driver to make at least one (possibly two) day trips out there and back from Pattaya. I don't want to drive in muang thai as my reaction time has decreased from when I last did. Can anyone suggest a reasonable and safe operator to contact?

  17. Specialist pet shops would be the obivous place to look, but Tesco/Big C sell a cheap (79 Baht) leather collar. My Rottie crosses have only broken one of the pair I bought some months ago. Although you specified 'decent' I have not found any others. Once worn in they are OK. I will probably use new rivits if the other collar needs repair in the future.

    Length about 50 cm ?

Gee Cuban the man said a 'large dog collar'! My Amstaff has to have a minimum of 65cm, dunno what your Rotties are crossed with, but I reckon you might be choking them with a 50cm collar.

  18. doosyhindleg,

I am Australian, my wife is Thai.

We had our first baby in Thailand, by choice.

I cannot speak highly enough of the treatment that we recieved at the Hospital, and also with the Oz Embassy afterwards getting all of our paperwork in order.

Whilst there were certainly some hoops to jump through as far as getting the little ones citizenship and OZ passport, it was not too bad.

The application for my wife's Spouse Visa was submitted after the baby was born, and the fact that we had started a family did contribute to the success of this application, I believe.

We are about to have our second child here in Australia, and i can say that the hospital system here is worse than in Thailand.

Medicare does not cover a lot of the costs, and we have (after 7 months) spent more in OZ than we did in Thailand for the whole pregnancy including birth etc.

Please do not hesitate to contact me if you have any further questions.

I'd have to agree with this statement in the most part, the cost was significantly cheaper and my lady was much happier being amongst her family during the pregnancy. Not sure how the current OZ $5,000 baby bonus impacts on any decision though, it might even be possible to claim this even if your child is born in Thailand?? The embassy in Bangkok were super helpful and it did I think aid in the spouse visa process to have a ready made family to show the permanent nature of the relationship. We moved back to Oz when the child was 1 year old, she is now 18 (an there are times I wish I'd left her with the in-laws, not really), so I guess unless the $5,000 is attractive/available you can go either way.

  19. while i don't think drug dealing is exactly a respectable profession and these people were out of line for flagrantly flouting the laws, i disagree that it is anywhere near deserving of the death penalty. if these people held someone down and forced drugs into them, that's one thing, but they didn't. there will always be a supply available. those who choose to partake in it are doing so at their own risk. adults should be free to make that choice for themselves, as they are free to do by smoking a cigarette, drinking liquor, and getting into their car to go to work every day. i agree that legalizing drugs and focusing more on education & rehabilitation is the answer, rather than killing people involved in the marketing of them.

I'd have to agree with much of what you say 'girlx', there'd be no dealers if there were no customers. For those that are hooked already make their drug of addiction available in suitable amounts only through a doctors prescription. The way we are now in respect to drugs is surely similar to the way the USA was during Prohibition days. Then it was liquor that caused many of the incidences of crime both organised and smaller. There will always be those that must have something as a crutch in their lives, the best we can do is to try and ensure it doesn't continually impact on the rest of society.

  20. Unless you're expecting the international situation to get even worse than it is today I would think this is entirely the wrong time to buy gold. In my opinion gold is probably very close to as valuable as it's going to get, the increase in price has been steady since 9/11 but unless you really believe it must get worse, then look for some other investment.

In respect to it's resale value, Thai gold or gold bullion generally will certainly be better than any of the standard western alloys used in jewellery, such as 9-10k, 14-18k or even 22k. These are often called Torng k gold karat) in Thailand but the lower karats are regarded more as Torng kee (shit gold).

  21. OK so it looks as though you're never too young to retire in Thailand. My concern is when is one too old to consider retiring in Thailand?

My wife (Thai) of 20 years is saying that we shouldn't move to Thailand because at my age (70) having access to expert medical attention might be the most important thing to consider.

So, sellup and take up residence in LOS where the climate will according to some of you relioeve the aches and pains associated with increasing age, or stay in the Nanny state of Western Australia, where violence and crime seems to be increasing daily? Of course if you are a victim of violent home invasion or road rage there is ready access to medical treatment providing you're not actually dead.

My dream of 30 years ago, of living in the LOS has lost some of the drive that made it so attractive. I can still eat good Thai food every day and cuddle a laughing Thai lady but it's not quite the same as it was back then. :o

  22. Most Thai ladies including bar girls would not be happy to get into a taxi or tuk tuk on their own at night. The incidents of rape, robbery and murder that occur in such situations in Bangkok, Pattaya and elsewhere are legend.

Sad for the young lady if this is what happened, she should however look closely at both her drinking and her friendships. After the reasonably recent incident in koh Samui plus any number of past incidents in Thailand from years back, you'd have to wonder how she and her friends allowed the situation described to occur. Legless in a foreign country and dumped alone in a tuk tuk late at night, is probably as dangerous as going to a disco in Oz and leaving her drink un-attended.

I didn't see anything in the report to show that the lady reported the offence to the hotel on her return, why was that? After all the Merlin is a reasonable hotel with better than average security used to dealing with falang tourists, not some one star 10-15 room/bungalow establishment.

Though I'm not for a moment saying that it did happen in any other way than as described, it's not unknown for girls under the influence to become a little amorous and the cry rape later after realising what they've done or allowed to happen.

  23. I'm inclined to support the view expressed by VicSada and feel some level of sympathy for the 'mules'. I have only a little sympathy for the end users, but none at all for the Mr Bigs who live off the weaknesses and gullibility of both the users and the mules. The countries where these Mr Bigs live, know full well the source of their wealth but are either incapable or unwilling to move against them. Even though those countries may not actually tax the drug they welcome the foreign exchange brought into their countries by the trade.

  24. I am predicting a very short posting life here for that one!

I guess I qualify as a 'newbie' too because I don't post often and only on subjects that interest me or where some other posts stir me into doing so.

I have some sympathy for both the girl and the guy, the girl was obviously playing a game not uncommon in Pattaya, Phuket or where ever. Did she deserve to die? No way, can I understand the guys anger and loss of control? To some extent yes, but he could have found some other way to get his own back if he felt he must.

The age difference, I'm not sure if the guy expected the young wife to love him with a passion but at least he probably expected that for what he was providing there would have been some gratitude and fidelity. My thai wife is 37, I'm 69, our daughter is 16 and in High School, will it last forever, dunno, but I hope it will. If it doesn't I'd say thanks for the last 18 years, I'll miss the cooking, the massages and the affection.

In todays Thai language newspapers, you will find where a Thai man in Uttaradit chopped his wifes head off because she said he was as dumb as a buffalo. It will be interesting to see who gets the longest sentence because of mitigating circumstances.

All you young handsome experts who know that the girls choose you for those qualities rather than a chance to marry a falang and improve their and their families live, Gee, I just wish I had your conceit. :o
