I just heard that Ron Parker passed this month. He lived here for many years. We were friends years back.

I knew Ron as well.  RIP to an interesting fellow.

  2. Uncertainty is certainly a drawback for foreigners living or thinking about living in Thailand. In the past, there was at least a basic level of stability even with all the prior coups but the current regime has raised the bar on the powers they may evoke. There is also uncertainty on inevitable events and now the banks are making it more difficult to transfer money out of the country. There are a lot of obvious things like the dangers of driving and corruption, but the uncertainty is what caused me to move away.

What banking laws have changed? I don't have any problems transferring money.

Bank of Thailand released new regulations for Thai Nationals that want to transfer money overseas last week. Don't have the news story but things seem to be tightening down.

  4. Alcohol abuse in Thailand is huge. Just look at all those restaurants, karokes, and bamboo bars that abound and are full of people in the evening. And that is the civilized part! When we moved 20 miles north out of Chiang Mai, I was astounded by how much the locals drink. It was quite common to meet someone at 9 AM totally wasted and barely able to cope. When we built our house, our excellent crew drank virtually every night of the week, but they were light drinkers compared to most of the upcountry folks.

  5. We had this exact problem in our bamboo grove as well. Your local booze or funeral supply store will have fireworks rockets that look like an M80 with the fuse in the middle. Pound a 1 inch diameter PVC pipe into the ground and launch a rocket right into the tree after the birds have arrived. Those fireworks going off took care of the problem after about two nights! Keep a few handy if they come back.

  6. Re: T-Dog......Haven't decided any area yet but should be near town as we won't have transport, well maybe rent a scooter or close to a songthaew route. I would be interested in knowing more about the "seasonal friends situation" We would be looking at 1 or 2 bedroom, no studios, kitchen with a few western additions and a balcony big enough to sit out to have a morning coffee. Washing machine (for her who must be obeyed) would be nice too

Re:Steve 187......The 90 day multi then border run sounds good. Do I go to consulate here to apply for initial 90 day visa before travelling ? I live in Vancouver.

    Sent you a PM . . .

  7. I have a tree next to my house. Today I noticed something what looked a bit like a dead leaf, yet too small for this tree. So I decided to take a peak through camera.

Apparently I have new neighbours! Any idea what bird this is?

Looks like a sunbird, but not sure which one.

  8. Have relocated many tukkae after they started making a mess at a rental house in the way past. Have a basket handy, and hit them with the garden house. As soon as the water hits the wall they lose traction and you can catch them as they fall or put the basket on top of them and then slide a sheet of plywood under it.

By the way, the tukkae trade must be one of the best urban legends in Thailand. Everyone talks about it in the villages, but no one has ever been able to sell one to a real buyer. Been asking about that for nine years and still no first hand knowledge.

  9. Our old neighbors told us about the Pangolins that used to inhabit the bamboo groves next to where we built our house so I had hoped to see one on one of my mountain bike rides. Not much chance of that happening anymore as they are actively hunted and sent to China. Would love to see one of these beautiful creatures in the wild.

  10. If your extension and re-entry permit expire while out of the country you will get a visa exempt entry. You will then need to start all over again by getting a non-o visa and then applying for a new extension of stay.

Okay, so if I am understanding this right, the re-entry permit is NOT good for a year, but expires at the time the permission to stay expires? Guess the best thing to do then is to just apply while away as Mario suggest.

  11. Can someone confirm my understanding of being out of the country with a TM-8 single re-entry permit filed: If I understand this right, if you leave and then come back within the term of the re-entry permit and your permission to stay (O-A visa) has expired while you were gone, you are given thirty days to again apply and acquire the permission to stay. Is that correct? Any details to be aware of? All help appreciated.
