  1. After years of using WinDoze i was so sick of 20 min startups and shutdowns, crap performance, and needing a rocket scientist to install / uninstall and do "Maintenance" I finally did the right thing and get a machine that works and can do everything an average user needs straight out the box.....

    Yes Its a mac....

Yes you either love them, or hate them - (but only if you don't have one!)

    Yes slightly more expensive

Yes has a small learning curve if you're used to WinDoze

Yes some specialist software wont run, but it can dual boot if you really need to use WinDoze only software like autocad etc etc

Had mine for 4 years and will never go back to a WinDoze machine...... - Like 99% of mac users....

Explore all your options.... cheapest isnt always best.....

    Just my 2 cents worth......

Oh and can now order direct from apple via apple website in bangers.... Macbook white 37,900 baht! bargain!

  2. I believe that eating the elephant or buffalo shit is legal, :D

however eating what grows in it is, as i understand it, is semi-illegal...... :D

Just make sure you don't ingest DATURA as this will give you a trip from which you may never recover!!! :o

Cheers and make sure you brush your teeth after your trip-tastic meal, as "sure as shit" you ain't gonna pull with the ladies with elephant doo doo between ya molars!!! :D

  3. Dominator.

Yes you are correct, i also believe that all the beaches are belonging to the king and therefore in theory you should have no problems landing there by sea. And yes no doubt that machine guns are probably illegal in thailand but trust me this guy had something that fired 7-8 shots in about 1 or 2 seconds. maybe you should go over there and tell these chaps the error of their ways and point out that they are breaking the law....

Please let us know how you get on and once you have had all of your bullet holes and machete marks treated at the hospital,- if you make it back, - you could organize a T.V. BBQ on the beach with your new black clad friends... Maybe have some birds nest soup....

    Have fun....

  4. A few years ago i was sailing my boat and on the request of my customers we headed to koh tae nok and attempted to anchor near the northern bay for some snorkeling. Just as we dropped anchor a black clad chap appeared on the rocks blowing a whistle. Once he had our attention he produced a machine gun and fired about 7-8 shots in rapid succession into the air. Needless to say that got our attention pretty quick, we picked up the anchor and hightailed it out of there. Havent been back since and no plans to return.

I was told soon after that the island is used for collecting birds nests and the "owners" are prepared to go to great lengths to protect their very valuable crop from poachers etc. It was also speculated at the time that they were growing some "special" crops of the smokable variety.... hence no unwanted visitors.

Never had any other issues at any other islands anywhere around samui - phangan- or tao and am usually welcomed on any island i have visited, especially when armed with a bottle of sangsom or mekong..

  5. Exactly my query, especially KPG police catching KPG police, however that is what i heard, from KPG Local Thai's and as they knew one of the other blokes arrested i guessed it was true. Did anyone else hear of this, or am i being spun a yarn....

All happened on the pier when said cops and one local went to meet the courier.

Has the new police chief actually made any impact and stopped the road blocks etc or is he another face on the take?

    Cheers

  6. Sorry to resurrect this thread but I heard recently that about 3 months ago the KPG police arrested two of their own officers along with two others men with 200 yabba pills at the ferry pier in nathon... Anyone heard of this as i'm sure the new chief would be publicizing his effectiveness if true but i cant find any info?

Cant imagine it would be fun to be a bent cop in samui jail... anyone know how long 200 pills gets you these days?

    Cheers

  7. I have been seeing lots of new signs around samui advertising LPG. Is LPG now available in samui or are they advertising for the conversions only. If LPG is now available doesn't that nail the coffin shut on their claims that prices are high cos they have to use diesel?

On a side note, i just returned from BKK where i went to buy a vehicle, and i hired an english speaking taxi and driver from 9am to 8pm, he drove approx 80 - 100 km around BKK and acted as translator during the transaction and helped me through the name change procedure. He knew all the places to look for good deals, haggled mercilessly on my behalf when servicing the vehicle, buying tires / shocks etc.( saved me 1200 baht on tires alone.) He made the whole experience easy and i was more than happy with the 1500 baht a day he asked for and added a 500 tip for the last day.

Last time i used a taxi in samui was from airport to wat plai laem and was 500 baht for a 4 minute trip! Top value...

Anyone hear of another shooting, possibly taxi mafia related, in choeng mon last tue evening on the road that goes from choeng mon up past sila evason towards tong sai? Drove past about 20:00 and loads of taxi's, police, crime scene tape, and photographers taking pictures of a body?

Sooner the government sorts out these robbing scum the better......

    Cheers

  8. Hi all,

I've been living between samui and phangan for 10 years this crimbo, and the only way you'd get me back living in england is kicking and screaming!

I head back to blighty once every year or so, and enjoy it but i would rather live here and visit there, rather than live there and visit here.

yeah its not perfect here but even with all the bulls**t ( which can be amusing!) thailand wins hands down.

One thing i do miss tho is the smells and sounds when you open the pub door on a cold wet miserable night...... nice but not enough to go back for...

Oh and yeah, it is going downhill rapid, and even the poor rats are starting to realize the government is screwing everyone.

I propose that with all the CCTV coverage we should should use it by following every politician for 24 hours a day and broadcast it live on TV. They want all my biometric data for their ID cards so they can keep tabs on me, so i want to watch what they do and who bribes them....If they don't like it then resign....after all they are public officials who volunteered for the job.

    Roll on surveillance Uk....

If you've done nothing wrong then you've nothing to fear!! hahahahahah what a load of trollop.

  9. SBK - I believe the pier in Haad rin is actually not a private pier and was built with public money same as the bantai pier and the huge pier in banrak in samui ( which is now rented out to seatrans as they dredged the end so it could actually be used by boats!).

I don't know if part of it was then rented out to Mr Kao? for the regular ferry. However all the land around the pier is private land.

Can anyone shed more light, as i also believe that private users are actively discouraged in using this so called private pier ??

A trip to the harbour department might be in order to clarify the ownership..

    Cheers

  10. Hey frankman,

Just to save you some hassle and heartache.

I "purchased" some PTBH land in koh phangan on the advice of a "reputable" land company in koh Phangan, and i asked "are you sure you can upgrade?" "yes - no problem we do it all the time" i was told. The company said that it would take 5 months as it has land with the title of Nor sor sam bordering on it, it would be no problem.

I paid money for the "Upgrade" (supposedly just to bump it up the huge line waiting for upgrade!, ie to the top of the pile.), and money for the land office to survey it, no problems there, they confirmed that it met all the criteria for the upgrade, ie not too steep, has coconut, mango, Banana etc etc on it (so not "Raw" jungle - or worse national park!), nor sor sam on the border.... The land office officials agreed it could be "upgraded" , and guess what.... 4.5 years later i am still waiting.....

Luckily i am very good friends with the original owner, (who also tried upgrading his remaining PTBH land with the same company, - on my recommendation i might add! 20 odd rai x XXX Baht - money he could ill afford.), and we are now trying to recover the costs from the land company and sort the whole mess out. The owner doesn't have all of the money i paid to him (a lot of it went on HIS upgrade costs), but we will work something out eventually, i'm not in a hurry but one day i might have to write the whole lot off, just have to wait and see. (hehe am i an eternal optimist or what?)

Sure i expect to lose some money on this fiasco but i might recover the bulk of it. hey, life's a risk, what can you do.

My biggest mistake was believing the land company who gave me the advice and not checking it out with an independent lawyer, thai visa etc, and now funnily enough the company don't seem too keen to help me sort it out.....

Right Now I am not prepared to to disclose to the whole world who the company is (so don't ask!), as i am still trying to recover some of the costs, however if unsuccessful then i might be persuaded. (no malicious intentions of course. - just trying to save some others from believing some bad advice from the same people.)

Would i do it again? Nah..... I learnt my lesson.... :o

Mate save yourself the hassle and don't bother unless it costs you NOTHING and you are prepared to wait a VERY VERY long time.

  11. Hi All,

Thanxs for the replies so far, however still no info on where to get menthanol locally.. :o

Khun Jean, - Did think about using straight veggie oil (SVO) but to be honest i would like to try making the bio-diesel first as i fancy the challenge of making it.

SBK, - I have heard that Raja used Ethanol, not methanol, supposedly it is much harder to use ethanol. But i might investigate further when i'm next in surat.

Anglud. - I agree, but the problem as i see it, and i am no expert on this, is that the bio-fuels industry worldwide are not using the right oils with regard to crops. Why are they using corn - grain - ie foodstuffs when crops like jatropha - a weed that grows prolifically without using huge amounts of water and give a massive return of usable oil per hectare- much more than corn etc. Seems to me the use of food for fuel has more to do with economics than environmental sustainability - ie driving up the price of said foodstuff thus making more "profits" for everyone concerned. Remember the capitalist motto - "Profits above ALL else!" Anyhow, i would like to avoid debating this on this post, i am really more concerned with personal production than mass production. I am planning on using coconut oil produced locally.

And on that note anyone know of anyone supplying coconut oil in bulk say in a 200 liter drums, in samui - phangan for a reasonable price?

StonybonyTony - i have found the sodium hydroxide abundant every hardware store in samui / phangan... i belive the thai name is Soda Fai and it is very cheap by the kilo.

Well thats all for now, again thanks for the posts so far and i hope that this post stays on topic and stays in a positive mood.

    Cheers

    Marty

  12. Hi all,

I am interested in having a go at producing my own biodiesel, but am having great difficulty sourcing a supply of methanol. Anyone know where i could get a drum, preferably in the suratthani area.

I did find a supplier in BKK but they won't ship to me, and won't sell a drum to me directly in bkk unless i have a permit to transport hazardous chemicals. Current price is approx 2700 baht for a standard 200 liter drum.

    Cheers

  13. Hello everyone.

I have come into possesion of a series 2 landrover that has a registration book. However when i sent off the paperwork to change the title registration to my own name, it was returned to me unchanged and i was told by the agent that they couldnt change the name in the book as something was wrong.

Turns out that i have acquired a "fantom" car. What seems to have happened is that a very previous owner has scrapped another vehicle and used that book, including the chassis no etc, to register the landrover. The original landrover chassis number has been ground out and a "new" Number stamped into the chassis. It also has a new toyota engine with correct (?) numbers.

Anyone else have experience of this practise, as a thai friend says its no problem........... :o

    Anyone any advice?

    Cheers

  14. Hi There,

I never was aware until this year about the extension route until this year, and as i need 4 employees and dont have them. Plus i usually use the border runs to visit other parts of asia for a week or so, (otherwise i think i would get lazy and never leave the kingdom!)

Just seems to me that the powers that be just dont encourage small buisness's anymore.....

    Cheers

  15. Hi there everyone,

Can anyone explain or shed some light on why i am having difficulty getting a new one year multiple entry Non_b Visa.

I have a small company doing yacht charters, i am the only employee, and have, upto this year have never had a problem getting the above visa. (5+years already) I have a work permit issued five years ago and has been continually renewed to date.

Every time i have applied for the visa i have included a copy of my wp, company papers, tax returns etc etc

In april i travelled down to KL to get a new visa and was only issued a 3 month single entry. The staff in the embassy said that as my wp had "expired' i could only have a single entry. ( the wp had technically expired as i was over 90 days since last renewal)Apparently because the first page has a "validity" of only one year even tho the wp has been "booked" with the labour office everytime i left the country and contains all of the extension stamps to match every visa entry to the kingdom (ie every 3 months).

I have now just applied to the consulate in dublin, and have just been advised by the consulate staff that they have been issued new guidlines on multiple visa's and that there may be a problem with my application again because of my wp, only this time my last 90 day entry to the kingdom was on 6th aug so the wp is still valid. After a very lengthy call, the consuilate staff are now checking with the uk embassy to see if i can be issued with the visa. Of course i dont have the actual wp with me as it was still in the labour dept when i left, But had copied the first pages for my application. I have already emailed my lawyer in thailand to send the additional extension pages but the staff are not sure if this will be sufficient.

Can anyone please help and advise on what the "NEW" rules are and what exactly i need to do to have a hassle frre visa experience as no one so far, either in KL or dublin can tell me the correct paperwork that i need.

I just want to know the correct legal hoops i have to jump thru to be legal in thailand as i have grown to love the people, lifestyle and everything about the kingdom..... yes even the Bullsh*it that happens everyday.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated, and i hope this is a heads up to everyone trying to get a new non-b multiple..... its getting much harder EVERYWHERE....

    Cheers

    Smartie :o
