Rich Cor was correct but I would add to take your possible new address into the different ISPs offices and have them check what is available. The same provider will have different capabilities in different parts of the city. I had my provider change me from DSL to cable, but they said fiber is not allowed in our development (don't know why not). I have a 200MB/50MB program.

The embassy will try to find any family members "back home".
Then these family members should contact a funeral and/or repatriation company in Thailand. Some embassies give names of possible companies to the family.
Then the family contacts one of those repatriation companies and hires them to sort this out.
What the repatriation company will do:
- They talk to the embassy to get the details
- Check for bills to pay, i.e. hospital, etc.
- They talk to the family what the family wants. I.e. repatriation of the body, cremation in Thailand with or without big ceremony, transport or scattering of the ashes.
- Getting documentation from embassy, police, etc.
- Translation of those documents
- Maybe sending personal items to the family
- And many other details.
Cost of such a service is about 50,000B including everything excluding external bills like i.e. hospital.
This is what happened in the cases I have been involved in but I would modify it just a little bit. The embassies are notified and they will try to fine the NEXT OF KIN. It is the next of kin rather than just family members who make the arrangements. In cases where the expat is married to a Thai, the surviving spouse is the next of kin and responsible for making any and all arrangements. There have been cases when the next of kin in the U.S. has formally authorized through the Embassy the girl friend to act for them as she see fit.

Why was it even stopped. Stupid Government.
Mail went out and came in on passenger flights so, since passenger flights have been stopped, no mail.

The answer about renewing by mail is a definite yes! This was told to me by a citizen services officer at the consulate just last month. Follow the instructions on the Consulate's web site.

Go to the Tessabaan and complain. Ask for a form for neighbors who agree with you to sign echoing the complaint. The Tessabaan will sent out an inspector and, if agrees with you, he will talk to the owner and have him sign a notice to take action. Follow up will be in 2 weeks to see if action was taken. Done that; it works.

There are some Thai organizations that provide home care takers on a 24 hr basis. They get some 3 months of training, can give basic care to bedridden patients, with or without feeding tubes, put in wheel chairs, bathe in bathroom of sponge bathe in bed. The American across the street is bedridden after a stroke, uses a feeding tube. Has a live in care taker for roughly 20,000 baht/month.
Ask a nursing home (e.g., Chiangmai Nurse, sort of across the street from Ruam Choke) for references.

The clinics I have heard about are late afternoon or evening ones after the good doctor has completed his real job. I do not like those hours and find I do not have to acquiesce to them. I used to use Ram until BKK Hosp was built. It is closer to the house so I go there now. If I want to discuss something, e.g., a blood test, after the day I took it, I simply book an appointment on line with the doctor that ordered it and go in for discussions. I have also walked in and been seen by the doctor. At least at Bangkok Hosp, I have not found a doctor in any discipline that will not listen to and answer my question about my health issues and the pros and cons about different treatments.
The ophthalmologist surgeon at Ram we still deal with takes the time to discuss every issue and answer any and all question. So, Stargazzer, you are saying the Ram doctors you deal with will NOT discuss your medical issues with you? How old are your doctors? Are they from the old school of "I am an educated man and you are a village person" era?

For some of us, it is not a waste of time. It is a reason to go to Promenada, meet friends who are on the same calendar reporting time, have a nice lunch with them at Dukes, do a little shopping, etc. Sure there are other ways, but how much fun is on-line or by post?

Suthin Alloy Automatic Gates is replacing my motor this week (waiting for part to come as I type this) after 15 years of use. The motor comes with two remotes and he said our old remotes will continue to work. The new motor comes with a self charging battery for power outages. I am also replacing the wheels under the gate as it takes quite a bit of effort to open it when the motor is disengaged.
The new motor slightly higher than the old one, so they will remove the existing toothed track and weld it back on at the new height.
Total cost hardware and labor is 27,000 baht. I attached the motor brochure.

The law has always required a Thai license or International License for the type of vehicle being operated. Enforcement is a separate issue.

I use a simple wire transfer. It does cost $30 per wire, but I find it very convenient to do it on line logged in to my account; no 3rd party involved. Prior to wiring, I had to set up the Thai account with the all the details, see attached. Now I effectively log in, specify the amount, and click send.
Several of my friends use Transfer Wise and are perfectly happy with them. They seem to be cheaper, but I prefer to maintain complete control of my money.

If you try different bank's ATM, don't forget to check the exchange rate you got. For example, if you take out 25,000 baht from a Bangkok Bank ATM, see what your 25,220 baht withdrawal was in dollars. Say you bank debited your account for $812. Divide 25,220 by 812 and see you got 31.059 baht to the dollar. Compare that to the bank to bank exchange rate and make your decision if the rate is OK or not.

If you are coming as a retiree, you get one combined shipment of household and personal goods duty free. This should be covered somewhere in Thai Visa.

report lost and stolen passports to the Tourist Police and they will give you a report in Thai and English.

You should have included one or two options worded around speaking the language and accepting the culture. Thai Visa is full of expats posting about having continuous problems with both.

You apply for the passport at VFS in the Trendy building not the embassy.
See: https://www.gov.uk/overseas-passports
Have you done a police report for your lost passport?
I know the U.S. requires a written official Thai Police report. Your reply to UbonJoe did not specifically say you have that piece of paper from the Thai Police. Thus this post.

I obtained one today. I visited my local Amphur first to enquire what was needed etc.
Yellow Tabien Bahn + copy
passport + copy of ID page
Visa page copy.
Returned with required documents etc and a 10 yr ID card was issued in under 10 minutes.
Cost= 85 baht. Was told next one would be for life.
Hope this acts as a guide to others but please be sure to check with your local office as what they require, as Provincial Offices can and do vary.
Chiangmai - Sansai: same information and copies; about the same amount of time. Mine was issued for life being I am of age.
The airlines reject it because it say not good out of Chiangmai. I have used it everywhere an ID is required except sometimes at the bank when they want to see the passport against the account that it was opened with. Registering a SIM card. Can be used anywhere a certificate of residency is required.

Two thoughts
1. If he has been here 4 years, he has friends. Funds could be funneled through them.
2. When a citizen is arrested, the Consul or Vice Consul or a representative should be visiting him in jail. They can/should communicate with you (if he asks them to) telling you what needs to be done to pay his fine, buy his ticket, and fly home. If nothing seems to be working, you might send the embassy an email. I find such emails are answered in 24 hours but I do not deal with the UK embassy.

YES USPS will track through Thailand.
My experience has been to enter the USPS tracking number into the Thai post office tracking system and then follow it to delivery. Vice versa for tracking mail from Thailand to the U.S.

@Our Man in the Tropics said: trust that this is a most stimulating topic for all nationalities everywhere.
I appreciate stimulating intellectual subjects but (it may be because of old age?) I quickly lose interest if there is no practical use or application. Does this one have either?
Never the less, I see two avenues that have to be taken. First, as has been mentioned lightly, a thorough examination of international law pertaining to diplomatic immunity and the bi-national treaty dealing with local national Embassy/Consulate staff is required. That seems like a daunting task requiring extensive time spent in a law library.
The second avenue would be to search Thailand precedents in this arena and deciding under what extraordinary circumstances would a Thai court even accept such a case. And then deciding whether one would have the slightest chance of finding a qualified lawyer capable of filing such a case. My immediate reaction is these are daunting tasks #2.
This isn't, by any chance, some law school required paper, is it?
