  1. Hmmm, went through the same rigmarole a couple of years back and the end result was a marriage certificate from the amphur office. That, together with the house book, my passport, and in case you want to register a vehicle, a letter from immigration/your embassy, and you're pretty much covered for most official form-filling, unless you are employed and that's a whole new can of worms...

This was the answer I expected at the beginning of the thread. All I did was register the marriage at the Amphur and was finished. In all the years since then, I have never needed anything else (e.g., something from some ministry in BKK), except as Pikey pointed our for registering a vehicle, etc.

I have never been asked for anything else from CNX immigration, so has anything really changed?

  2. During day time i'll have car and driver for work but after evening i'll have to be by myself. i heard there is no taxi in CM.

any suggestions or tips will be highly appreciable.

    thanks so much.

Forgot to add that there are plenty of taxis in CM and, to me, not unreasonable. Cost a lot more than that baht buses and tuk tuks and I normally don't use them just in town, but they can be worth it for convience in some cases. You can get their dispatch phone number from the hotel. You will see them at the Kad Suan Kaew shopping mall and some other locations.

From your question I get the idea you are new to CM and, therefore, want to see as much as you can during your free time. Unless you are constrained to that location because of your day time commitments, I think you can find a hotel in a better location, even staying in the $25-$30 range. You can definitely improve your location and quality of room by paying not much more.

Go to http://www.hotelthailand.net/search_instan...;bd=1&sList= and look at hotels. You can check their location at each hotel web site or get a map print out of downtown (i.e., the moat and east to the river) and find the hotel locations by address.

  3. Hello Chiang mai,

i'll be visiting Chiang mai for work purpose on week days. I'll be staying in suan dok kaew hotel for 3 days. Does anybody has any idea about the location and standard of the Hotel?

    .............

any suggestions or tips will be highly appreciable.

    thanks so much.

The hotel web site is: http://www.r24.org/siameservices.com/chiangmai/suandokkaew/ . Based on the pictures showing no rugs on the floor in the room, the overall write up, and a rate of about $25/night, I would guess it would be more of a motel quality than hotel. Very basic accomodations, but clean and adequate if you will only be there for sleeping?

From the map shown on the hotel's site (no where near to scale) and another map of Chiangmai showing the moat and Kad Suan Kaew (available on Thai Visa) should orient you as to the basic location. But it is a long way from the Ping River, the Night Bazaar, and most of the night life tourist enjoy. However, being near the university, there will be a continuous stream of baht buses and tuk tuks available after work (and an interesting street night life as the students come and go as college students do everywhere).

  4. Thought it would be good to have a thread here with the link to the thread in the Visa forum. It hasn't been confirmed yet though.

    http://www.thaivisa.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=167699

There is another immigration office behind Home Pro/Carrefou (sp?) that currently performs some immigration functions and, according to the employee I talked to, will (may?) someday handle the visa work currently being done by the airport. Whether or not this actually happens, it may be the source of the rumor (i.e., the airport location will close).

  5. A very apt avatar Mestizo....<deleted>

To the OP.....Both Methyl and Ethyl alcohol are available here, although you might encounter a few problems with the latter. You don't mention what it's for. If it's not for consumption you can get Metyhyl alcohol at any of the pharmaceutical suppliers along Suthep Road, and inexpensive.

I, too, would like to find some for human consumption. I want it to leach the "essence" out of some seasonings for cooking. The receipes for doing this call for Everclear (i.e., require the highest alcohol content) and I can see the need for it after trying the vodka route (the vodka just becomes flavored vodka instead of a seasoning).

I think a good example of why it is preferred would be if you compared the difference in effectiveness of imitation vanilla (no alcohol) and the genuine vanilla extract (high alcohol content).

  6. .....the bad part for me today was when I visited the IRS office in order to obtain additional information on the ITIN.

    http://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p1915.pdf

    Questions:

    1. Does my wife have to physically be here in the States when applying the ITIN for this year (2008) tax return?

    2. Is it true that she has to be here for six months? She cannot absent from her work in Thailand.

    3. What other routes you can recommend?

    4. If she successfully obtains an ITIN, will I be able to file my return jointly while she is still working in Thailand?

I deleted some of your words for brevity....

Sounds like you got an IRS agent who was not willing to admit you sprung something new on him so he just spouted off.

My answers to your questions (based on what friends have done) are:

    1. No
    2. No
    3. Get married, apply for the ITIN by mail IAW pg 6 of the publication you cited (I think it was pg 6) for an alien spouse filing jointly. Attach a copy of your marriage certificate. Be sure to make a copy of your application.
    4. Worst case, you have not received the ITIN by 2008 filing time. Just file jointly, leaving her ID number block blank, attaching a copy of your application and marriage certificate to the 1040. My widow friend did that for several years before the IRS just sent her a number (I have no idea why her husband didn't request one; I found all this out after he died).

    Comments on your banking questions:

I have no checks sent to me in Thailand as all the banks want months to let the checks clear before depositing them into my account.

I have my money deposited in a Wells Fargo bank account and a standing wire dollar transfer made each month into my Thai bank account on a certain day every month. WF charges a $12 fee for that transfer.

If WF coverted it to baht before the transfer it would be at the lower US exchange rate. This way I get the higher Thai on shore rate.

I have another account for ATM withdrawals here in Thailand. I control that account such that I never have much money in it in case it is compromised in some manner. ATM thieves could only get hundreds of dollars instead of thousands.

I am seldom charged any ATM fee as long as I use BKK Bank and Siam Commercial Bank ATMs. I don't know why, just know that is the way it is. A friend uses another US bank and gets charged 2% every single time.

    Hope this helps.

  7. (1) My research for a widow after 25 years of marriage to a US State department retiree said she was ineligible for SS benefits because she never lived in the US. Her 25 years of multiple visit (they lived in Thailand the whole 25 years) did not count.

    (2) They filed taxes jointly so the IRS gave her a Tax Identification Number vice a SSN. She was not eligible for a SSN because she never worked or lived in the US.

    (3) Their children were born in Thailand, births registed at the embassy. They carry US passports and currently live in the US. However, they are eligble for Thai citizenship/passports.

  8. i,ve had it with the uk ,would people recommend moving to thailand cheers for any help.warren

Hmmmm, this could lead to a very interesting survey: How many expats living in Thailand are really happy if they only moved here because they were unhappy in their native country?

And it would be even more interesting if the survey were linked in some manner to the one on expats' Thai speaking ability (covered in another survey started 1/24) such that a correlation could to be made between the "happiness factor" and how much Thai the expat speaks.

Now the problem in constructing the survey would be in defining happiness. There are many expats who are very happy at how far a limited retirement income goes over here, and/or some other major aspect of their life, but seem basically unhappy about everything else, based on their complaining.

Lots to think about in deciding to become an expat anywhere in the world, let alone in a country where you don't speak the language. And everyone's situation is unique.

  9. I thinks it's time to look at Thailand's Nationality Act. Section 13 describes how a Thai woman married to a foreigner can get rid of her Thai nationality:

    --

    Maestro

And to support Maestro's input that a Thai national does not have to give up Thai citizenship, look at the U.S. State Dept's policy on Dual Nationality at http://travel.state.gov/travel/cis_pa_tw/cis/cis_1753.html

Among other points, State Dept site states:

"Most U.S. citizens, including dual nationals, must use a U.S. passport to enter and leave the United States. Dual nationals may also be required by the foreign country to use its passport to enter and leave that country. Use of the foreign passport does not endanger U.S. citizenship. "Most U.S. citizens, including dual nationals, must use a U.S. passport to enter and leave the United States. Dual nationals may also be required by the foreign country to use its passport to enter and leave that country. Use of the foreign passport does not endanger U.S. citizenship. "

  10. .....the installation ceremony of our Chiang Mai VFW Post on the morning of the 17th at the Grandview Hotel .......... surprise, at least to me was the very impressive number of vet's wives at the event. ....

My wife and a friend's wife went hoping just to meet the other wives. Having been a military wife longer than anything else, and a Thai miliatry dependent before that, she knew that the wives would have much in common (beside Farang husbands) despite any age differences or home town. She/they thoroughly enjoyed the morning and made plans to meet with other wives later on. I think the installation was a success from both the husbands' and wives' viewpoints.

  11. Swazi, you'll be fine. You have up to a YEAR after the expiry date, before you have to sit the tests again, do all the eye, reaction tests, etc.

I went in on the day the licenses were expiring, but it was explained to me by the staff there a year ago when I got my 1 year, that I would have up to a year to renew after expiry.

As mentioned above, all that is needed are the passport copies (front page, current visa/extension page), a Certificate of Residency, a medical certificate, and copies of both of those as well. Of course bring the expiring licenses, and the fee (605 auto, 355 moto).

You should be good to go on 21 January.

PS The office opens at 8:30 AM.

    Thank you very much McG,

As always, most helpful and a mine of information.

    Much appreciated.

    Cheers.

BTW I am on a multi-entry O type visa and am half way through a 12 month residential lease in a condo. complex.

Where do I get a Certificate of Residency ?

The letters given to me by well-wishers when I applied for my last licences, gave me and the staff at that Department a lot of aggravation, before they finally accepted them in lieu of a certificate of residency.

    Will appreciate your advice.

    Thank you.

My experience was to take passport papers w/visa and go to the small building across the parking lot from the main immigration office (same building where you validate your address every 90 days). They gave me the authorization letters for buying a car and being registered in the tabien ban. I assume the first letter could also be used for getting a driver's license, but best to ask, of course. You do need the photos you can get on site. With photos and passport/visa, it took me 15 to 30 minutes.

  12. Today I went with all the required documents (expiring licences, copies of passport main page, current visa page, a Certificate of Residency and a medical certificate).

Can you obtain the license with a tourist visa? And do you really need two licenses for auto and moto, not one where both are included?

The official word is that a Thai drivers license will only be issued to foreigners who are resident, and have a 1 year visa.

The Dept. of Land Transportation wants all those copies of the visas, the Certificate of Residency, for a reason, I would imagine. :D

However, TIT (this is Thailand), so who knows?

And yes, a separate license for each category of vehicle. The moto says "Private Motorcycle" on the back- presumably to differentiate from a license for "Public Motorcycle", ie motorcycle taxi for hire, etc.

PS The 5 year expires on your birthday. As my 1 year expired in Jan, and my birthday is in Oct, my new licenses are good for 5 years, and 10 months.... :o

If you time it right with the 1 year, you can receive just short of 6 years validity.

Has anyone heard whether or not a Life Time license will be replaced with a smart Life Time license?

  13. I thought that they were off the air. I think they used to be 93.5 or 98.5. I tried finding them the other day and I thought that the station was now different.

They are at 98.5 at home and in the car in the Mae Jo area but I lose them as I travel elsewhere. I still get them at the Lotus on the inner ring road, but the reception is not clear.

  14. Never had a problem - Chiang Mai is very safe on world standards.

Early in the morning the temples are beautiful - and the City has many of them.

    Enjoy your stay.

    Regards

exactly! If you are up early enough, between 5 am and 7 am you'l probably see the Monks going about on their early morning Binderbaht rounds. If I may suggest, try finding a local market and watch the people doing their morning food shopping.

Take your camera. When you find that market, find a coffee push cart or stall, and sit a while. Drink some coffee (or Ovaltine) and take lots of pictures, almost randomly. You will have a good time and end up with a great number of good shots and probably some great shots. It may be one of your best memories from Chiangmai.

  15. I've searched the net in vain. Does anyone know where Pentax lenses are available in Thailand; in particular the DA 50 - 200mm zoom?

    http://www.pentaxslr.com/lenses/lens_50_200

    Cheers

    J

Not a direct answer but.... I am using a Sigma 70-300 (1:4-5.6) DL Macro Super that I bought for my Pentax film camera with my Pentax K10D with good results. Auto focus, auto exposure works as advertised. So you might find a suitable substitute at a bargain price by looking at film lenses, specially a used one.

Re buying on line from the UK and importing. How much would the import tax be on top of the 7% VAT? The last thing I had mailed in cost only US $20 but I was taxed 15% plus VAT. I might want some more camera gear but try the mail/FedEx/shipping route if the tax is high.

  16. Had a request for pumpkin pie on the Christmas menu. (You know who you are :o )

Does anyone know where I can buy it ready made in CM

    Thanks

Not that it answers your query, nor is it as easy as buying one, but I made an excellent one for Thanksgiving using local squash. Simple receipe available on line. That is an option if you have the time, an oven, and a mixer (too labor intensive without one for me).

  17. I want to buy an average bicycle for casual riding that will let me adjust the seat high enough such that my legs pretty are much extended at the bottom of the pedal cycle. I am 6'2" and have 31"-32" legs. What I have found so far leave me with legs at what seems like a 70-80 degrees position on the down stroke, and these are nice bikes (i.e., costing 3000-5000 baht).

And then, if I do find one with a high seat, I want to be able to lift the handle bars up so I am fairly erect and don't have all my upper body weight riding on my hands.

Does anyone know where I might find such a bike, preferrably near Mae Jo (but anywhere will do)?

  18. Good news, will I have to wait until my existing policy expires?

No, talk to your Broker and he will add the items as an endorsment.

He said he could not :o

Some companies in the US will cover household contents and personal property in Thailand under a Renter's Policy (and I have such a policy).

  19. HI GUYS AND THANKS FOR LOOKING,

COULD YOU HELP US FILL OUR 4 DAYS IN CHIANG MAI ,

    FRI +SAT +SUN+MON

ONLY THING BOOKED SO FAR IS WE RENEWING OUR VOWS ON SAT WOULD LOVE A GOOD EAT FOR SAT NIGHT

HOTEL TRI GONG ANY ONE KNOW WHERE THIS THIS ? WHATS IT NEAR TO ECT ?ANYGOOD ?

LOOKING FOR NIGHTS OUT GOOD EATING PLACES , TRIPS ECT -GIVE ME SOME TIPS PLEASE AND THANKS . :o

Tri Gong Residence is how it is listed, not hotel. 8 Lane (Soi) 1, Sriphum Rd, Chiang Mai 50200, Thailand. Based on the address I would guess it is inside the moat on the north east corner. You can find quite a few reviews of it at: http://www.tripadvisor.com/Hotel_Review-g2...Chiang_Mai.html

  20. I had ipStar from ToT. the 512k package was 2200 baht per month and it was reliable but really slow and i had to have a huge ugly satellite dish in my front garden. We could not have ADSL because we were too far from town, (4km).

I now have maxnet 1meg package for 590 baht and it is mostly reliable twice as fast, athough nowhere near 1meg and most importantly 1/4 of the cost.

So perhaps maxnet sucks but it does not suck anywhere near as hard as ToT, (in my area anyway).

Land & Houses Park Mae Jo (3 km south of Mae Jo University): TT&T available but I selected TOT. Started out lower but now have their 1.5 mb ADSL at about 790 baht/month; happy (but I don't play on line games, either).

  21. I was in Chiang Mai last year. I bought this painting from some store there, no idea which, nor can i remember where it was in Chiang Mai! I loved the painting and want to get some more. Problem is i dont know how, nor how to contact the painter. Im attaching pics of the painting and the painters name!

Perhaps if anyone has bought similar paintings can help!

A bunch of artist paint in the bottom floor of a building of tourist shops on Chang Klan road (Night Bazaar) and you can find similar paintings there. There is an art shop in Kad Suan Kaew where you could also find such paintings. They have wide varieties of subjects or, in either location, you could commission a painting of any subject.

If you are really asking for some one to find paintings of this genre and send them to you, that is an entirely different question.

Back to the thread: original post said meetings are on Wednesday every fortnight. So I don't go on the wrong nights, on exactly what dates will you be meeting in December?

  23. I am still looking for a maid in the Sansai area.

Need someone around 3 days a week.

Please PM me if you know anyone.

    Thanks.

I know my maid's aunt is looking for house work but she doesn't speak English (nor does my maid). She lives in Mae Jo near the University. I can ask if she would be interested if English is not a prerequisite.
