  1. That is for the child of a person that has permanent residence to to apply for permanent residency.

You read this differently that I do. I read this to say

    (3) Humanity Reasons category: he/she must have relationship with a Thai citizen or an alien who already possessed residence permit as the followings:

    1) A legal husband or wife. You can apply if you are a spouse of a Thai citizen

    2) A legal father or mother. You can apply if you are a parent of a Thai citizen

    3) A child who is under 20 years of age up to the application submission date and must be single. You are a minor child (admit I don't understand this one, any random minor can apply?)

  2. The requirements and other info can be found here. http://www.immigration.go.th/nov2004/en/base.php?page=residence

You need to be on extension of stay for 3 years and be working with a work permit to qualify. It also rrequires 3 full years of tax payments.

You don't need a lawyer or agent. All they can do is help get all the paperwork together to do the application.

Please comment on (3) which, to me, clearly states any one of the following 3 categories is eligible for permanent residency (my bold enlarged font)

1.2 has personal qualifications that fit one of the following categories:

    (1) Investment category

    (2) Working/Business category

    (3) Humanity Reasons category: he/she must have relationship with a Thai citizen or an alien who already possessed residence permit as the followings:

    1) A legal husband or wife.

    2) A legal father or mother.

    3) A child who is under 20 years of age up to the application submission date and must be single.

  3. I have one with key and keyboard, gives me more safety

However.. that is not the main issue.. small safes like the one you displayed will just be carried out of the house and forcefully opened later on..

So you need one to screw on the wall / floor or with sufficient weight.. but don't forget that models with screws are worth much less for fire protection (15 mins instead of 1-2 hours)

Swiss is absolutely correct from my viewpoint. I have an older style that has the key and combination lock and both have to be worked to open it.

And one small enough that someone can carry off doesn't provide much protection. But if all you need is a fire proof one for papers, then maybe your preference would be OK.

The same manufacturer offers the FIREPROOF & ANTI-THEFT LC-70A which weighs 100 kg. Notice the safe within the safe?

Maybe be way more than you want or need today, but something to think about for long term storage of papers and valuables.

  4. Under Thai law, parents have the right to reclaim ownership of any real estate property that they have gifted to their descendant or descendants. This is done by filing a petition with the court and obtaining a court order to undo the transaction at the Land Office.

Before being scared of this happening, one should remember that civil cases like this can take a year or more in civil court if contested.

If not contested, then the child just signs the chanot back over to his/her parents; done, finished.

But if contested, then the parent(s) have to think about whether or not they want to spend the time, effort, and lawyer fees.

The issue needs to be put into perspective.

  5. You could Google cost of living in Thailand and check what all comes up. This particular site offers insight in the the COL for Bangkok averages and range and may have links to other cities. COL

oh, should have read all the replies before posting; this was already covered.

  6. I have made printed copies of my Thailand address in English and Thai side by side to be stuck to the envelope, and this has always worked for me, plus, use registered post so that the letter is traceable and has to be signed for.

Does the recipient gets mail regularly when the address is written in English? Whether or not, getting the address in Thai to put on the evelope is excellent advice.

And if they get Thai mail regularly, then the advice to use registered post is also an excellent suggestion.

Assuming you can track the letter on line in Australia, you can track the letter from the day you mail it to the day the recipient receives it. The THAI Post Office has an on-line tracking web site that does track foreign registration numbers. I have used this method for sending and receiving letters.

  7. I have maybe 10 of these, black and orange ones. I say maybe 10 because they want to hide all the time. The largest (happens to be black) is some 20 inches long. The smaller ones (orange) are around 6 - 8 inches long. They seem to be quite slow growing.

I, too, got the orange ones when they were quite small and would not see them except rarely if I came out and surprised them. They would immediate hide under some water feature. And for the first year or so, it was like they had all disappeared, like you said.

Now that they are so big they do not have many places to hide, they are out more and have gotten used to me. So I see them most of the time. If I go into the pond to clean something, they swim to the other side but do not seem to panic like they used to. But there are still some unknown number of them that squeeze into small areas and stay out of sight so I am not how many there are.

As an aside, I have the suckers; hundreds of the little "mosquito" fish; maybe 15 or 20 algea eaters of various sizes (now some 7-8 inch size) which hide all the time; and 19 large koi/carp all nicely living togetherin a large tiled fish pond.

  8. I questioned a business when they gave me a 052 area code and was told that 053 is considered filled and 052 has been started for new service. Now is this only for businesses as Bettlejuice suggested? I do not know. I just know to not be surprised when I am given or see a 052 areas code for in and around Chiangmai.

  9. Elgordo38.... I am not sure I understand what you said. Did you mean to say that the first attempt to process the charge on your Canadian card was rejected but on a subsequent attempt the amount being charge was approved? If that is the case, it may simply have been a transmission line error, partial data corruption the cause of which cleared up for your last attempt.

All charges I make at Chiangmai Ram with either a U.S. visa card or a SCB visa card all get the Kasikorn Bank receipt. Now they did use a different machine when I used an American Express card. So, should I ask if they have a 3rd one?

  10. While Elektrified doesn't like it, I would say it is OK for the price. I have enjoyed it by itself and with meat in a sandwich.

It was in Rim Ping Ruam Choke yesterday, labeled Pepper Cheese 500g. It is more like a pepper mozzarella than a Jack Cheese. Kind of hard to see, not clearly labeled. I only found it by looking for a block of white cheese with peppers in it. And it is not with the imported cheeses.

  11. The OP clearly does not understand the meaning of the word "Corruption"

Corrupted morality and ethics are not a justification for corruption, they are precisely the argument against corruption.

If you struggle with that, consider for a moment the vast numbers of families being forced off their land by corruption - That the local money lender of a number or some people in Bangkok benefit from these evictions is not justification for the corruption that gave rise to them.

The polls Gonzo referred to should have started out: GIVEN THAT ......In moral discussions, corruption is spiritual or moral impurity or deviation from an ideal [e.g., Buddhist teachings] AND that in government/business behavior discussion, corruption is when an office-holder or other governmental official or civilian person in position of power acts in an official capacity for personal gain. .........

As we have all seen in every single poll ever published, (including the ones here on Thai Visa) the poll results is skewed by the framework in which the poll question is asked and the fixed answer options provided. People usually chose a close fit if there is no way to change the options.

With hundreds of years of the people having to live with officials helping firstest and the mostest those that pay upfront for favors, is it any wonder that the poll responders were not too excitied about something was seems just like a way of life. The poll Gonzo mentioned probably didn't offer the choice of "would you have more money if you did not have to pay for service that the official was required to provide for free and, if fact, was paid to provide you? Would you be happier in the long run if it did not exist? Would Thai society benefit? ".... or words to that effect.

  12. I expect the rep wasn't really sure what you were asking. The ol' Thai-English communication problem. I wouldn't even waste anyone time by asking about "international speed, torrent download, etc." as a rep won't be able to give you any specific answer and may just get confused....and then in turn confuse you or make you mad. You just need to ask about the plan pricing and is it available to your residence.

Pib's answer matches my experiences when I had TOT. But let me suggest that you take a Thai speaker into a "real" office, not a sales booth in Lotus, say. Examples............

    1. I had TOT ADSL for a year. Neighbor moved in across the street, new house. TOT, the only option then, said NO ADSL. It tooks a discussion in Thai to learn that the servers were maxed out and they were installing more. They forecasted about 3 or 4 months. Sure enough, in a little over 3 months they called him and set him up.

    2. Fiber came to my area but it required new wiring. I had had good service with TOT so I went to their office and asked if they could give me the same speeds for the same or cheaper price. They asked me to wait, called the "back" room. The technicians checked my line and said that it could not handle any higher speed. Again, the number of users and the infrastructure were conflicting.

So, not only check what the different programs are, have them check the line capability.

  13. Fiber on poles in front of the house and then copper coax into the house. If your house is prewired, True will go into the attic, put on a splitter, and route the internet to your computer location and the TV to your TV location. If not pre-wired, they will do it through the wall where you request it.

The router DOCSIS 3.0 Cisco ECP3025 modem/wireless router works very well for me (PC ethernet connected, tablet wireless). They also provide the cable box with remote.

As I remember the package, yes, it is 30/3 down/up and 105 channels of TV, BUT mobile data has a fixed max value per month. I seem to recall it worked out to maybe 2 hr/day? But do not rely on that as I do not use it, so I do not remember what it was. I do know it was shown on the brochure as a limited amount per month. But I can not longer find the brochure.

RE elfpattaya's response: my contract has no clause saying this is a one year special offer, but that does necessarily mean anthing.

  14. Rexal, I think you combined two different subjects. The switch of the over-the-air broadcasting from an analog signal to a digital signal is one subject and cable TV is entirely different.

If all the stations are sending only a digital signal and you have an older TV that can only receive analog signals (e.g., from a roof top antenna like most of Thailand is still using), you will get nothing. That is why people with those older TV need the boxes, to convert digital signals to analog.

If you are watching True satellite TV, you have no need for the new box. The signal is already digital

Cable TV is literally that, cable to the house to the box that the provider gives you that gives you access to what every level program you are paying for. Again, the signal is digital but the quality may be higher.

Cable TV usually is bundled with the internet, like what True FTTX is providing. Fiber optics running on a pole in front of the house, copper cable running to and into the house, splitting off with one branch going to a TV box and one branch going to a modem/router.

So, as KittenKong said, digital is the future and if you want to watch TV, you will have to be able to receive and decode a digital signal.
