I wish I'd never read or posted in this thread now. I was doing so well at telling the time in my blissful ignorance. Now I'm virtually clueless.
I'm gonna stick to *chang* time, i.e. 2 to *chang*, 4 past *chang*, etc.
Does anyone have any Nurofen?

I shall be coming to BKK in April to purchase a condo in the joint names of my wife(English) and myself. She will not be coming with me and I am aware that I will need a letter giving me POA to complete the purchase. The letter will be witnessed by my solicitor in the UK but I am unclear as to whether it also needs to be 'ratified' by the Thai Embassy in London. Can anyone help?

Try posting on the Health, Body, Medicine forum - you may find someone prepared to offer helpful advice rather than sarcasm.

The thaicounterpart to the rolling pin is the สำก (sag= pestle). Often used as a missile, made from hardwood or stone. Also very handy in the close combat.
If confronted with this weapon find refuge in the next pub! Never try to disarm the aggressor!

Two Mexicans are stuck in the desert, wandering aimlessly and close to death.
They are close to just lying down and waiting for the inevitable, when all of a sudden...
"Hey Pepe, do you smell what I smell. Ees bacon, I is sure of eet."
"Si, Luis, eet smells like bacon to meee".
So, with renewed strength, they struggle off up the next sand dune and there, in the distance, is a tree, just loaded with bacon.
There's raw bacon, dripping with moisture, there's fried bacon, back bacon, double smoked bacon...every imaginable kind of cured pig meat you can imagine!!
"Pepe, Pepe, we ees saved. Eees a bacon tree".
"Luis, are sure ees not a meerage? We ees in the desert, don' forget".
"Pepe, when deed you ever hear of a meerage that smeell of bacon...ees no meerage, ees a bacon tree".
And with that...Luis races towards the tree. He gets to within 5 metres, Pepe following closely behind, when all of a sudden, a machine gun opens up, and Luis is cut down in his tracks. It is clear he is mortally wounded but, true friend that he is, he manages to warn Pepe with his dying breath.
"Pepe...go back man, you was right, ees not a bacon tree"
"Luis, Luis mi amigo...what ees eet?"
"Pepe...ees not a bacon tree....
Ees.....
Ees.....
Ees.....

This may work for younger people also
Just came across this exercise suggested for seniors, to build muscle strength in the arms and shoulders. It seems so easy, so I thought I'd pass it on to some of my friends and family. The article suggested doing it three days a week.
Begin by standing on a comfortable surface, where you have plenty of room at each side. With a 5-pound potato sack in each hand, extend your arms straight out from your sides and hold them there as long as you can.
Try to reach a full minute, then relax. Each day, you'll find that you can hold this position for just a bit longer. After a couple of weeks, move up to 10-pound potato sacks. Then 50-pound potato sacks and then eventually try to get to where you can lift a 100-pound potato sack in each hand and hold your arms straight for more than a full minute.
After you feel confident at that level, put a potato in each of the sacks.

Aussie walks into his bedroom with a sheep under his arm and says:
"Darling, this is the pig I have sex with when you have a headache."
His girlfriend is lying in bed and replies: "I think you'll find that's
a sheep, you idiot."
The man says: " I think you'll find I wasn't talking to you."

Despite the very non-indian sounding name, Cafe Coco in the Novotel Suk Soi 33 is excellent. Good buffet and even better a la carte. Often full of indian families (a good sign!) but the live music can be a bit variable.

90 days from arrival.
The visa is just a recommendation by a Thai embassy/consulate to let you enter the country.
The decision to do so (susually they do) is with the immigration police officer at the border. S/he will give you 90 days once they saw you and the stamp wioll read:
Permitted to stay until .....
If you have a single o, the visa is void once used and you follow the permission date.
many thanks - that make sense! On the same subject, is it possible to extend tis type of visa (for 30/60 days) while I'm in Thailand? What is the procedure?
-
I will be travelling to LoS from the UK on a 'Type O' visa in June and am unclear as to when my 90 day period actually starts. Does it commence from the date the visa is issued at the embassy or does it start when my passport is stamped by BKK immigration? Any advice would be very welcome.

With the exception of the rates being quoted for serviced apartments, I assume that the figures being quoted here are for long-term contracts. Can anyone offer advice on short-term rental in BKK? I'm going to be in town from the beginning of June for 3 months and need to rent something reasonably quiet, comfortable, handy for the Skytrain and cheap! Does such a place exist? I'm asking a lot I know, but any advice would be gratefully received.

how does Guiness taste in LOS?
i love the taste in UK/IRL, but in australia is tasted sh*t
If the pint I had a couple of weeks ago in the Robin Hood is anything to go by, AVOID!

....... I'm looking for a condo in BKK nearer the other end of the scale - 1 or 2 beds with easy access to the skytrain. I'm not looking for massive investment potential, but modest rental income would be good. Any advice would be very welcome.
Here's my advice, which is worth what you're paying for it:
Residential rental property in Thailand seems to rent out for 0.5% of the fair market value. Then there's vacancy rates, failure to pay rent, other expenses, condo fees to pay, etc. How are you going to make a decent return on your investment? Do the math; I doubt it works out to a net draw. And then there's the chance of not recouping your investment......
I hear you loud and clear PB. Thanks for the advice. Nevertheless, I'm going to go ahead and buy something so if you, or anyone else reading this, could suggest an area of BKK that represents 'good value' (I use the term advisedly!) in the current climate, I'd be very grateful.
-
I'd suggest you check with some people who know before you rely on any of this.
Every real estate professionall in town will tell you the same thing: the residential real estate market, particularly at the top end, is in a state of total collapse. An 'reservations for unbuilt condos trading at a premium to their asking prices?' 'A new property boom is underway?' That's just baloney. This guy Crispin has long had a reputation as a sloppy reporter and this latest gem is a prime example why that is. Take a handful of developer press releases, stir liberally with beer and BS, and voila! A totally misleading story.
'Nobody is taking about a repeat of the 1997 collapse?' Heck, man. Nobody who knows is talking about anything else.
Highly enlightening! A friend who has just built a house on the coast near Pattaya (Ban Saray) also had his eye on the Raffine development. I'll make sure he reads this thread. This is one of the best topics in a long time. I think its about time we all should focus more on the things we like about this wonderful country.
And as for myself, cool thailand moments I get them everyday just going outside.....
Well said dm. I'll drink to that!

Hmmmmm.......... just tried dropping 'Chang hua man' into an sms to TGF and got into deep trouble. "Never say that! Not polite" Can anyone enlighten me as to the true meaning of this phrase?

Many thanks RDN. I shall investigate.

I'm going to be spending four months in Bangkok and would like to devote a few hours of each working week to learning Thai. Can anyone recommend a source of tutors for one-to-one tuition? Serious suggestions only please! Bar-girl Thai is not what I have in mind.

It seems that this topic has gained it's own momentum without any further input from me! All interesting and thought-provoking stuff.
I had a long meeting with colleagues this weekend and, having taken all the postings here into account, along with info gleaned from other sources, it appears that a TPCL is probably the way forward. We shall see!
