Come the revolution they will need their support ...
Would you hold the mobs at bay whilst they run for the airport, all for the promise of an extra B1000 a month?

Well, she did get more votes than Mr Trump. Quite a lot more in fact. I don't think that should be forgotten.

And the aircraft carrier and blimp? Which one of the 500 generals/senior orificers will lead the defense ? (500 is just a random number, may be less)
Try three times that!

Maybe, if he is forced into exile, he could rent himself a nice villa in Bavaria?

Imagine if you were super rich and could spend just a tiny portion of your fortune to help a huge amount of poor people. You would still be super rich after helping, have a good feeling about yourself and would even be a hero to all people.
If I was super rich, I know what I would do.
You'd have the EC after you...

Once things begin to "slide" you need to stop the movement quickly. Actions taken to deal with the problems mentioned in the OP are not going to work. The financial programme to cope with the collapse in jobs will fail, essentially because the cash which might be available will not be released (hence only 7% success rate in applications for relief) as it is controlled by the very rich who ultimately call the shots with government. Political unrest will hardly be resolved by first effectively disenfranchising 6 million voters (many of them acutely politically aware) and now as seems likely jailing their leader on trumped up charges. The utter ineffectiveness of any attempts to deal with drought or crop burning ruins the quality of life for many and highlights the incompetence of the regime for many others. All in all, they seem to be greasing the skids!

I suspect that they will move quite quickly on this. Under the current restrictions there can be no rallies, protests or effective campaigning.
The world is less likely to take notice.

Very possibly staffed by graduates of Trump University. At least we will know the value of their qualifications.
It will need a big headquarters complex - New York would be a suitable location - does anyone know who might have suitable real estate their?
Their will be a considerable requirement for conferences and meetings and so on. Underutilised golfing resorts are ideal, does anyone know...
Their will be a need for a bright young person of significant talent to head it up, preferably someone with close ties (kin maybe) to a major world statesman, does anyone know...

Hope they have plenty savings in the bank and haven't squandered it all on big cars and smart phones.
Times are about to get tough!
Most of those who are worst affected, have lost their jobs and are being refused state assistance have never had money to squander. They will be the B300 a day day workers. Their income will have stopped on the last day they worked. Money in the bank!

Well, they tap the rubber from the trees in the plantation outside my house very early in the morning - well before dawn, 3am or so.

Ironically, wasn't it the General in charge of "welfare"?

I am always amazed at the function of so many "volunteers" in Thailand from emergency response teams to policing, and so many other functions in between, now health monitoring. Wonder what training they receive, and why are these people volunteers rather than salaried?

There seems to be quite a strong tradition of "volunteering" particularly in rural communities. Up here in Chiang Rai, away from the city, virtually all the first aid/ ambulance services are provided by various volunteer organisations, as are much of the police (non crime fighting) activities - traffic control, escorting funeral processions and so on. They are the visible ones there are others such as the health care volunteers.
Of course the uniforms and perceived power and authority may, for some, be an attraction. Thais are a gregarious bunch, and they love to be part of a gang, if that gang is providing a needed service, that makes them feel better. There is also the element of gaining merit as a Buddhist, Equipment and training may not be as good as you (and possibly they) wish, but without them there would be no other service. Occasionally I give some appropriate English lessons to my local " Rescue Foundation" (ambulance) volunteers. They are enthusiastic, committed, actually quite knowledgeable, and the only resource in the area.
I had a bad year last year, a couple of accidents which required me to be carted off to hospital - nothing serious. On both occasions the volunteer ambulance crews were excellent, Without them I would have been even more knackered!

Have you any proof or evidence that such political beliefs were behind any decisions to make such procurement arrangements?
You see, the last twelve months or so on this forum suggest that your views on just about any matter are also driven by your somewhat trenchant political beliefs.
On occasions I may agree with you, more often I don't, but that doesn't make me, or anyone else who disagrees with your views an idiot.

Well it rather seems that you may, in due course, have a couple more.

I hear tell a ban on booze sales in Chiang Rai - effective now until 16 April.

Perhaps Reuters should take over running the national response to the Covid 19 epidemic, rather than the government (who quite disgracefully does not seem to include a single viral epidemiologist amongst it's senior ministers) and has had instead to rely upon the advice of experts?

Be very careful when dealing with True.
I have had dealings with them twice.
On both occasions they have lied like a cheap alarm clock!
If you manage to get a response from their customer relations people, (in itself no mean achievement) they will promise to investigate, and that will be the last you hear. Any follow up emails go unanswered.

Gracious me, I didn't know that the lottery had been suspended - interesting then that only 10% of lottery ticket sellers qualify!

I'm sure that it is not a "curb". However, putting in place the correct "informal" fiscal procedures required to regulate an increase in such trade is not an overnight task! Otherwise you will end up with the sort of unpleasantness referred to by the previous poster.
????
Incidentally, I am impressed with the concept of a "a digital thermometer that reads the ear temperature towards the end of February" - what do you use for the other 11 1/2 months of the year?

Thought about running out and stocking up, but figured it is easy enough to just go 10 days without. Kind of a forced detox. No big deal at all. Just wonder what the reasoning is behind this. It is just assumed drinking is ALWAYS a social activity? That is certainly not always the case. And even so, with social distancing, and just a few people, the risk is so low.
Also, cases really do seem to be flattening out, so alot of this appears to be severe over reaction, and rather mindless policy.
Spidermike, I think that whilst there is an initial idea of ensuring even "unofficial Sonkran" doesn't happen (probably not really coherent or thought through) you miss the main driving force. The chance to stand up, in one of the uniforms so beloved in this country: military, police or civil service, and get oneself "on the telly" making an announcement which demonstrates how powerful and important you are! The big brewing/distilling magnates, who are very much part of the wealthy and influential cartel who are the real power and influence here, will let it run for a couple of weeks, to show willing; but if their business is going to be permanently affected, and particularly if bootlegging on a commercial scale looks likely, (which it will), they will make some calls.

Sale or consumption of alcoholic drinks banned in Nakhon Pathom
in Bangkok News
Posted
Some had banned it for shorter periods. Chiang Rai, where I live, banned it from the 10th to the 16th. Today they extended the ban until the 30th. The head honchos are all playing "keep up with the Joneses!'
It will be interesting to see if the big brewers/distributors, who are very wealthy and therefore wield much influence, will support/allow a longer term ban. I suspect that they will swallow 3 weeks or so, to be seen to be "taking one for the team", but may have some representations to make were it to be further extended.
