Ever since i was young I was interested in world affairs and what makes the world the way it is so i can't really understand how some people live in a world with all the shutters and curtains drawn all the time. It is just me I know. but both my Thai wives gradually came over to my way of thinking - just observing the world through the nightly news, reading newspapers, both Thai and English but they do not get hysterical about it and they feel more in tune with the world and knowing that how aware of the world they are the more control of the everyday life they have .

I agree with both Kaleevala and Robblok except the Thais i know call it a syndicate and to join all members must buy a position by investing money into it if there is a vacancy and by invitation .. This gives them a right to borrow from the money jar , if there is any left, but there is an interest involved, not a percentage amount , but a fixed amount for every predetermined unit you borrow. For example it could be 200 baht for every 1000 baht borrowed and this can be calculated weekly so it adds up quite quickly . If they are not smart enough to see the dangers of this arrangement then a lot of them would also have other debts to service as well as their living expenses . Basically not smart enough to handle their own finances .
So they disappear with the money and the interest owing because they have no hope of ever repaying this debt or any of their other debts . I have had to chase up a few absconders just to prevent it escalating and to keep the peace ( usually staff in our Thai Restaurants ) so business wasn't disrupted by these disputes . . Felt sorry for them when i came knocking on their doors especially when they didn't think they would be found. At least i gave them a chance to come to an arrangement (and a lot of them were our friends too ) because there were always others (Thais or others ) who thought they were gangsters looking for them too . No legal contracts and no legal solutions.
Usually they resort to these syndicates because they are finding it too difficult to get loans from other more legit sources .These syndicates cause so many problems between friends, family, and workplaces etc. . The Thais are usually very secretive about them but they are everywhere in Thai, Chinese, Indian and Vietnamese expat communities that i know of in Australia and anywhere else there are Asian Communities no doubt, and they are always underground and they are always secretive about them in Thailand and all Asian communities as they are deemed to be loansharking by authorities . They cause so many problems .

They appear to be healthy good trees. Probably in someones way (or for the timber).

There would be work for native Thai teachers at some of the private colleges that cater for overseas students - especially the few that appear to have almost exclusively Thai students in the main Australian cities.

I am sorry to say there are a lot of people earning less than $15.00 per hour especially in the restaurant industry without any of the extras like super or holiday pay or penalty rates. One of the reasons we gave up with our restaurants in Sydney - you can't compete when your competition is paying wages like that . If you don't want to work for wages/conditions like that there are many others who will .

Plwch,
I have the same cancer (Multiple Myeloma) as you so i can identify somewhat what it must be like and how you really don't need these extra problems. I am lucky , my wife is here with me but i must admire your tenacity and will to hop on a plane and fly to Thailand. Mate, i can't give you any advice ,except take care of yourself and i sincerely hopes it all works out for you.

Try seing what you get when you ask an australian butcher for 450 gm of meat. He will give you 700. After an aprenticship and years in the trade I guarantee that he could judge to 10 gm..
It is just a silent form of up-selling . They know what is best for you .

I have had tinnitus for as long as i remember . As a kid i thought it was naturally the sound of silence , or to be more Zen, the sound when you have nothing else in your head ( like in meditation ) . But it comes and goes or perhaps i just don't notice it sometimes. i have been told that aspirin and coffee are amongst the more common items that aggravate it which i have found is true. best advice is you will learn to live with it and experiment with common foods/medicines etc to see what aggravates it.

If you regularly require a dinner suit or tux then it is cheaper to buy. I have heard some of the Tailors will also rent out dress suits (then probably put back on the shelf to sell to some unsuspecting sucker).

I would think that you will have to apply personally to the Aust Fed Police. I received mine directly from them by downloading a form off the internet. Paid a little extra for express service. There was no problem at all.
My experience last year when we applied for a partner visa was i only needed a police clearance from the Australian Feds because i had two step children under 18 on the visa application. Took about 4 weeks and was $ 40.00 AUD if i remember correctly . Got the clearance just for interest too .

A lot of the expats either work in the huge industrial complex or have retreated from the bright lights of Pattaya to a slightly more sedate envirionment . Ban Chang has the strip though if you can't stay away from the bars.
Phala Beach is about 15 minutes from Ban Chang - its not the best beach in Thailand especially if the wind is blowing in the wrong direction but it does the job. The swimming pool in Eastern Star was where we used to go swimming instead ,even though we stayed in Phala.
For major shopping etc you can choose between Pattaya and the traffic or Rayong (less traffic) . There is a immigration office a few kilometers towards Rayong too. It is not the prettiest town in Thailand but you should enjoy it.

Giddyup ,
Just an alternative suggestion for your turf but have you researched using growth regulator like Primo . There are many advantages including only needing to more less. It will also thicken your turf by reducing the length between nodes and you will have a finer turf blade whilst you continue using it . It sounds like you are using Malaysian Grass , or carpet Grass which was once a Paspalum but now is called Axonopus compressus .In Oz, i would say 80-90 % of all greens , especially ,would have Primo applied every 4-6 weeks at least through the warmer seasons . Where i work all our sporting fields and many of the high profile parks have a scheduled application program. You still need to cut of course so you will still need a mower so it will not completely solve your initial problem .
If you need more info or availability i would check out some of the Aussie greenkeepers/superintendents working on golf courses around your area . I know there are a few around Pattaya but they tend to move around as the pay is not good in Thailand compared with other countries.
Here is one article on growth regulators : http://www.lawn-care-academy.com/plant-growth-regulators.html
Anyway it is just an idea for you and may not be what you are looking for.

What we called Rubber trees in the west... don't see many, but when one does they are quite large! (Ficus ??? I've gone brain dead!)
This would be easy to root, I must take my clippers down and get some cuttings!
Jimmy, it 's Ficus elastica unless it has gone through a cultivar name change. i am sure that will prompt your memory.

Tree for religious purposes...
I remember the first tree I ever saw with the multi coloured ribbons was in Walking Street (Pattaya) back in '86 . Gave a nice little bend in the street but everybody respected the "spirituality" of the tree back then . I don't know if it is still there as it has been a few years since I have been to visit the circus in Walking street .
I am guessing this was this taken around Burriram , ?

I was once told , by a Hari Krishna devotee , that in India in the old days they used burning cow dung to ward of the mozzies, and because anything from the mother cow is sacred then it is okay to use. I never did think to ask how they got the cow dung to burn without using a accelerant like kerosene or mentholated spirits. .

About 5 kilometers from Phimai historical park there is a place called SAI-NGARM.
I went there years and years ago with my first wife and her mother. We used to do these Wat - Crawls and we went there but they would never tell me where we were or where we were going or where we had been . (Don't tell the falung too much). Now finally i know where i have been except i remember it as being really dirty with rubbish everywhere. And a river or a lake and a real picnic/party place. A real "Once i was lost and now i am found" moment . Thank you TP1.
Xen, I had the same experience like yours, about 6 years ago.
The place was a let down.
But it has changed completely.
No more picnic allowed on the grounds.
And the restaurants have really improved.
Look what they build in the past 6 years.
I remember feeling it was a special place though -I will certainly be going back to Phi Mai sometime. It is quite a pretty town as Issan towns go .

My de facto /partner / wife has just arrived in Oz after a stressful 11 month wait to see if the 809 visa was granted. The thing is , after you have lodged it you may not hear anything from them at all unless they need more information. This is the stressful part but you just need to hang in.
The other thing to consider is wether the kids would be better off in Oz getting an Aussie education. My opinion is yes and that is one of the very main reasons where are in Australia. After they have completed their education you have set them up and they can then decide for themselves wether they should be in Thailand or Oz or some place else. An Australian education , for all its faults, is still far superior ,in my opinion , to what is available in Thailand unless you have a lot of money to play with..

A few years ago you could get a renewed Thai passport at the Sydney consulate so i would imagine you could do the same in NZ . Be worth the phone call.

Just set fire to it like any decent person in Thailand would do. Plastic is especially good to burn. The villagers are probably wondering why you haven't done it already .
