  1. Although it has been said in this thread that opening an account in a Lao bank is easy, I have a different experience.

A week ago I tried to open an account in BCEL (Savannakhet Branch), but couldn't. They said that one can have an account only if one worked in Laos. As a tourist, even a regular tourist, I'm just to use their ATMs with my Thai-card. No account in Laos.

Are the branches in Vientiane different, or "more lenient"?

It's possible that they have tightened up - there was a campaign to stop money laundering going on a year or so ago so maybe since then they've bought in this rule.

It was over 5 years ago when I opened my account so lots could of changed in that time. I just walked in and asked for an account and the just wanted see my passport and where I was staying.

Maybe try a different bank - the BCEL are probably the strictest!

If they ever catch up with the rest of the world and have online banking that'll do International transfers Laos could suddenly become a very popular off-shore banking location given they don't have dual tax treaties with numerous western countries! :)

  2. Do not get your hopes up! We had an application rejected even though he had land a truck money in the bank and had traveled to Europe. Reasons............Age and poor job! I talked about this with a friend who works in The Australian Embassy and they were surprised at the rejection. In my view the Operation is poorly run with capricious staff (including Canadian Supervisor) so acceptance is a crap shoot........................

  4. I went to Bangkok Smile Clinic.

First had a cleaning from a dentist. Not impressed withh the quality of work

Then had a consultation with Dr Chatchai Kunavisarut about implant and crown. I was impressed with him but the overall impression of the Clinic was not to my liking so I decided to not get the work done there. He wanted 70,000 baht. He only works ther one afternoon a week.(Bangkok Nursing Hospital charges 90,000 baht)

Thantakit looks good on website.....................Specifically can anyone recommend name of a dentist

Anyone worked with above mentioned Dr Chat..............if so where

  5. My partner of 6 months was refused even though he had a Schwengen visa in his passport. We will try again this year as he now has land, a house under construction and a new truck. The trick is to put all your emphasis on convincing the Officer that you will not stay in Canada. My partner is Lao and many Lao think Bangkok Embassy descriminates against them. The Lao community in Vancouver has made 3 attempts to get a Lao monks to visit them..all rejected. A few years ago 2 Lao monks went to Canada and dirsobed and applied for refugee status.
