Yes I know. And yes, Cambodia is much worse. drive on any side of the road, any time, and are less skilled in driving than the Thais (the Thais are reckless but usually skilled).

I was slammed into by a motorcycle at too speed walking across a crosswalk in clear daylight. When I started across, there was nit a vehicle within 200 meters of the crosswalk. They were all stopped at a red ,light some ways up, and they all clearly saw me. When their light changed, came down at breakneck speed and ploughed right into me.

I was lucky to get away with only 3 fractures, 2 surgeries and 2 weeks in hospital. The moto which hit tme's passenger probably died.

I'm not setting foot in that country ????????????

Better spend $$$ and go to Taiwan. Wonderful civilised country.

Thank you so much for sharing, Sheryl ???????????? Do take care of yourself!!!

I got my 30-day extension yesterday, Dec 8, with 7 days remaining on the 45 exempt.

What surprised me was the fact that the IO did not in the slightest check my passport number against the number I had filled in on the TM7.  I even had to point out that the TM30 was stapled into my passport!

She spent most of the time I was at her desk talking to my (Thai) wife and pointing out that I could instead have applied for a 60-day visa (with extension) or for a visa based on marriage (with "only" 400k in the bank in my wife's name).

In other words, she appeared more interested in selling a more expensive way of staying longer term than 45+30 in the country. Weird.

(Expensive?  well, the extension does cost 1900 baht!)

    Hmmmmmm... ????

TM30 is the form the hotel gave you?

And what is TM7? I forgot.....

Actually in terms of accidents it is much worse

    The "driving" is indescribably bad

Though at least in Siem Reap not as heavy traffic as in Phnom Penh

    Much worse???...

Thailand is horrible. My mother was hit by a car on a pedestrian crossing right in the centre of Chiang Mai, back in 2005. I pulled her at the last minute and she "only" had a broken leg... otherwise she would have been dead right then and there.

    Still don't follow

So you enter visa exempt 45 days.

Subsequently obtain a 30 day extension.

The flight out will not be required to obtain the extension.

The extension has nothing to do with flight out of Thailand.

An onward flight may be required by airline at departure when you fly to Thailand.

So again , why do you want the 30 day extension done straight away.

Some want to do that if staying somewhere remote.

Eg Obtain in Bangkok then travel to an island

I want to get the extension straight away to make sure that I have it!!!

If for some reason they don't give me the extension then I have to leave Thailand after 45 days, right?

So buying a ticket for 74 days is a gamble......

And yes, I want to get the extension while I'm in Bangkok. That too.

I am also an older woman and feel very comfortable walking around alone in Cambodia. One of the easiest countries for a woman on her own. Just take sensible precautions as previously described. Big vulnerability for women is handbag/purse. Either

    -  don't carry one when out walking. Use money belt or the like (but do have photocopy of uour psssport, heslth insurance detsils and   emergency Contact with you)

    Or

Carry the purse but remove valuables (passport, credit/debit cards) first and carry only what cash you need for the moment . Likewise have passport photocopy etc though. In case you have an accident (see below)

Your biggest risk is not crime. It is traffic accidents including as a pedestrian (I have scars to prove it). Be very careful on that score. Don't assume motorcycles and cars will stop for you, even in a crosswalk. In fact assume they will head straight for you at top speed. Sometimes while on wrong side of the road.  Stay well on sidewalk wherever there is one (but still beware of motos, they won't hesitate to drive on sidewalk).

And make sure you have good health  insurance at least for energrncies/accidents.

    Same as in Thailand.....

Not everywhere all the tome but it does happen occasionally.

From your qurstions you have an exaggerated sense of the dangers. Just use common sense. And observe the locals. Don't walk down a deserted street at night; a street full of people is fine.

I don't go out at night.

But I am an older woman travelling alone and I want to feel safe. I like walking around a lot. And I have never been to Cambodia.

For the 30 day extension obtained at immigration a flight out is not required.

The onward flight can be asked for by the airline at departure for your flight to Thailand by the AIRLINE.

Your return flight within the 75 days (45+30) hopefully would be accepted by the airline.

Some people use "onwardflight.com" to rent a flight for this issue.

My question was: can I apply for the 30-day extension as soon as I arrive in Thailand? Within the first week?

Two weeks is a good idea.

Can be done up till day of expiry but seriously not a good idea.

30 day extension will start from end of your current permit.

Doesn't hurt to clarify that with the io at the very start.

About the 30-day extension of the 45-day visa exemption... Can I go to Immigration and ask for the 30-day extension within the first week of my arrival in Thailand?

I am worried because I am looking at buying a flight ticket for 74 days (so I am assuming that I will get the extension). Flight tickets are so expensive now, and if I'll have to make any change to the ticket later it will cost me even more... So I would like to apply for the extension as soon as I arrive in Thailand, to make sure that I can stay for 74 days. I hope that makes sense...

There are supermarkets with western products though, if Phnom Penh is any guide,  the selection may be less than it was pre-COVID (as western presence dramatically decreased during pandemic)

    Lucky Supermarket

    Angkor Market

being the best ones to try

    There are also convenience stores/mini-marts

You will have no problem finding butter

Canned sardines and mackeral easy too but not in EVOO, doubt you will find that. Canned fish is mainly asian brands

    Not sure re corned beef

And not sure if hard boiled eggs in convenience stores. Might be.

    Thank you ????

  10. Are there supermarkets with Western products in Siem Reap? I am looking specifically for butter, corned beef, sardines/mackerel in EVOO. Also, will I find hard-boiled eggs at convenience stores (in Thailand they have them)? Any information on these specific items will be very much appreciated ????  I keep a very strict diet for health reasons and I don't know if I should set foot in Cambodia at all, as I may not find anything to eat.

    Thank you ????

    Is this a wind up.

Most areas in Bangkok are very safe.

Definitely more than many western countries

As for many hotels of good quality in Laksi area???

There are good to 5 star ..everywhere.

If you are looking for 4* hotels why even ask about cheap ways to get to immigration.

Can't think of any reason to stay Laksi area

Normally I can't afford 4* resorts but I noticed that in that area they seemed to be cheaper, and also close to BTS stations. That's why I asked about the area ????‍♀️  Sorry for the wind up!...

For a stay of under 90 days along with no intention to apply for extension or interact with immigration you would do nothing.

On other hand as one example if you entered eg tourist visa (60 days) and wanted to obtain 30 day extension then you would need to have a TM30.

I see. Thank you. Good to know.

Looking at the location of the Immigration Office in Lak Si, I realize that I have never been in those parts... and I had no idea that the Sky Train went so far north! Is that a new line?... Or new stations built in recent years?...

I see there are high-end hotels and resorts at affordable prices in that area. Is it worth staying there? I am struggling with choosing new hotels because the ones where I used to stay are all closed ????  Plus I haven't been to Thailand in 3 years....
