I would do the same, (pay the fine next time I go to CW), but I'm about the file my 90 day report by mail to CW, and I don't know whether it will be rejected if I haven't filed a TM.30.

Only one way to find out, unless someone can enlighten me.

I did my 90 day report by post on 28 May, and I got my confirmation slip back on 14 June. I have never done a TM 30, but will do one before my next extension in November. There was no mention on the slip about a TM 30, but they did not send back any of my information to use next time, which is a first. I am hoping that this was an oversight on their part, and not something more sinister...!

  2. My wife and I, both British, have had retirement extensions for the past ten years, issued in Bangkok. This means that we have a good chunk of money in the bank, which was there for immigration and emergency purposes. However, with the new financial stipulations, this means we have limited access to our money for any emergencies that may occur. I therefore intend to continue with my retirement extension, but change my wife's to dependent.

As my wife will be in England when I go to CW to get my extension, does anybody know whether we can get her dependent extension on her return, and whether I need a new bank letter confirming my account balance? Lastly, is there anything else I need to be aware of, for example, I take it that she can leave and re-enter Thailand without me, provided she has a re-entry permit?

Thank you for any advice you can give.

  3. Unfortunately, this is a question that can only be answered by your bank, as it depends on the bank's policy, and the type of account you hold. For example, I am with Bangkok Bank, and my type of account can only be serviced at Bangkok Bank head office in Silom Road, Bangkok. I asked at the Bangkok Bank branch at CW, and they confirmed this was the case. Sorry I couldn't be more helpful.

You can only do your report in Bangkok if that is where you got your extension. To do it at another office you would have to formally change your address to where you wanted to do it.

You can also do your 90 day at the offices at Imperial World Ladprao or Big C Ratburana Rd. They open at 10:30 am.

    Joe,

Has immigration moved from Major Hollywood?

  5. My wife went to CW today to get a residency letter for a new driving licence. The IO wouldn't give her the letter because she did not have a "90 report card". This was because she leaves the country frequently, so never has to do a 90 report. She explained this to the officer, but all he said was that it wasn't his problem. She showed him her passport, and pointed out the retirement extension and dates of entry stamps from BKK, but all to no avail. He then gave her a leaflet which reads: "NOTICE Things are required in order to possess a driver's license and vehicle transfer documents. 1. You must have a 90 report card...."

Does anyone have any suggestions how she can get round this impasse?

  6. My wife and I went to get our annual retirement extensions and re-entry permits at CW yesterday. Despite getting up at the crack of dawn, there was a sizable queue when we got to CW. Unfortunately, we live in an area that is not very convenient for the BTS, MRT or expressway, so unless we camp out at CW overnight, I don't really see how we could get there much earlier than we did.

Anyway, by the time we were issued with our retirement extensions, the counter where we had to collect the queue number tickets had closed. As many will know, they have stopped issuing queue tickets at 3.30pm since September 1st 2015. This meant that we couldn't get our re-entry permits, so another visit to CW has to be scheduled. I know that we can get them at the airport, but that is not an option I feel comfortable relying on.

When it was approaching 3.30pm, I tried to get a queue number from the counter for the re-entry permit section, but they would not give me one without the new retirement extension. I even tried to persuade the re-entry permit section officer to issue me a re-entry permit when I got my retirement extension, but without success.

I hope that I was just unlucky this time with the amount of people waiting for an extension, but I have a feeling that I will have to allow for two visits to CW in the future; one for my extension, and a second for a re-entry permit.

  7. I was at the same office this morning without issues - my passport copies were on center of normal A4 from my home printer copies. I used Embassy letter but bank account has always required current day proof at Chiang Watanna AFAIK (they have branches of most banks one floor down so an easy process and became the norm after the move there).

They have always accepted a letter from my bank from the previous day. Unfortunately, I have an account that requires a letter from head office in downtown Bangkok, so it would be virtually impossible for me to get to the bank, sit around for an hour, or two, then get to CW. It sometimes takes a bit of explaining about what type of account is, but so far they have accepted it. As others have said, I sometimes get the impression that the "Boss Lady" is exercising her authority over her subordinates, and we are just incidental bystanders.

However, sometimes things do seem a little odd. My wife's friend recently went to CW for her first retirement extension, and they said that the bank letter she gave them was a forgery! She asked them to ring the bank, which they did, but would still not accept it. Maybe they had taken the issue too far to then back down; who knows? Anyway, she left after being there over 4 hours with no extension, but with plenty of confusion and annoyance.

You have got the wrong end of the stick here (and I suspect with your forgery tale also, but that's a separate issue.)

What the OP was discussing, that needs a same day update, is the photocopy of the last bankbook page NOT the bank letter.

Bank letters from the day before (and longer sometimes) have always been fine at CW, as long as the total in your account detailed in the bank letter is the same total as the last entry in your bankbook, which must be updated on the day you make your application.

    Thank you for the clarification.

  9. When I bought my condo in Bangkok 9 years ago, I was after a specific type of development, as I has worked in estate management and knew of many of the pit falls.

The condo I bought is in a two tower, 30 storey complex with a total of 120 units, each one being 280 square metres, and which was designed by the same architects who built The Peninsula, and I think, the Thai Stock Exchange. When I initially had a look at the common areas, I made sure that everything was functioning correctly, was well maintained, and clean, and then I inspected the annual accounts to ensure that they were in a sound condition with sufficient reserves. Lastly, I asked about the management structure, and was pleased to discover that it was run by the residents, for the residents, and that the in-house level of expertise across a whole spectrum of disciplines was outstanding.

Maybe I was just fortunate, but with due diligence a lot of problems can be spotted, although there are no guarantees. One last thing, my condo was built in 1992, so if there had been any major problems, they would have jumped right out at me.

  10. Hey Mr. Finance minister. What is your net worth? You're upset because many Thai's are selfish. Maybe they are genuinely poor and will find it difficult with all these stinking taxes. I don't agree one bit with paying more taxes on land people have already purchased. Taxes are nothing more than a money grab. People pay enough taxes as it is. Down with taxes. People pay taxes on their salaries, taxes on food, gas every god damn thing around we pay taxes for,and I'm not just talking in Thailand.

Taxes are what pay for every god damn thing around.. Hospitals, schools, roads, railways etc etc.. Only about 20% of Thais pay tax on earnings compared to other countries were it's much higher!

Not forgetting this tax would be 250baht A YEAR for a house worth up to 1 million baht.. a year, not per month!

    68 satang a day (3 US cents...2 UK pence)

Although I agree many taxes are to high in other countries. This one seems to be about right!

If what you say is correct, (and I have no reason to doubt it), in many, many cases collecting the tax will cost more than the amount billed.

  11. This is what happened to me today, and it is absolutely true.

I was on a bus going to the market, and the driver and conductor on my bus decided that the bus in the outside lane was a major problem to them. So we pulled up besides this bus, and words were exchanged. Then everything went ballistic. The driver and conductor from my bus armed themselves with machetes that were hidden under the dashboard, and they stormed the other bus, where their corresponding employees were also getting some large blades ready for their arrival. It was at this point that everyone on the two buses decided that it would probably be prudent if they adjourned to the pavement, which we did. After much shouting and gesticulating the warring parties separated, with fortunately no blood being spilled.

We all then got back on our corresponding busses, and went on our way.

I will leave you to guess whether I minded my own business, or not!
