To be honest I don't remember the name of the dentist but I had a root canal filling and a crown fitted at Elite after breaking a tooth and would highly recommend. A tall, skinny guy with glasses, early 30's (though looked younger but then maybe because I'm getting older!)

This applies to practically everyone in North America and with the exception of the descendants of British prisoners, almost all those in Australia.-snip- Why should Thailand make it easy for those economic migrants who are just looking to stay long term somewhere cheaper than their home country?
Hi, I don't consider those people economic migrants. The difference is that they don't move to Thailand expecting to receive monetary benefits. Those moving into the UK do expect that and that may be the primary reason they are moving.
Western Expats know they have to support themselves in Thailand or they will fail and perhaps have to go back home, if they are lucky. If an expat can meet the requirements to stay in Thailand he may well have more money than many Thais even if he's poor by our standards.
I would agree that at least part of the reason many expats are in Thailand is because they perceive it as cheaper, but they still have to pay their own way.
Cheers.
Yup for sure there are a huge percentage of people moving to the UK because they will be better off financially, whether simply by means of claiming benefit, or by higher salary, or it seems even a combination of both. I hear that Child Benefit or whatever it is called these days, can be claimed for their kids living in other countries.. how insane is that? But the root reason they emmigrate to the UK is for a better financial situation - meaning they are economic migrants.
economic migrant
noun 1. a person who moves from one region, place, or country to another in order to improve his or her standard of living
Whilst of course Thailand is not so stupid as dish out any of their few meagre State benefits to immigrants, there are plenty for whom the whole reason, not just part of the reason to be in Thailand is that it is considerably cheaper than living in the West. Nothing to do with 'perceiving' it as cheaper, which gives the impression of an illusion - it is a LOT cheaper. Fact. Especially so in the case of those 'expats' I am really referring to, whose biggest essential expense every week is beer, cigarettes and pootana.
So as such those people, even though they still have to pay their own way, are also enjoying a better financial situation and standard of living than they could afford in their home country, thus making them economic migrants.

It's just as well not everyone puts themselves first. I have no issue with overseas aid, nor refugees.
I am more than happy with my attitude, just like the MPs and their rich friends I will put myself first I suppose you will also be happy if you are living in Thailand when you get your pension and the UK government steals your annual pension increases from you, while giving out so much of your hard earned taxes towards overseas aid etc, etc.
Well it's just as well everyone doesn't have your attitude. I don't much like parting with my well-earned money but I very much like free education, free health care, free security (police, armed forces), good roads ........ etc, etcMizztraveller. What's for the goose is for the gander.
It's fairly obvious that we're very different people with different principles and see no point in continuing this debate further.
Over and out.

Yes, exactly! However you can't criticize them and then do the same yourself.
We can't have it all ways???? The banks certainly do. If everyone paid their taxes, so all these MPs and their rich pals do?? haha, haha, haha.
And the NHS which the previous poster suggests the OP keeps a UK address so he can continue to use it's (free) service. Come on, you can't have it all ways.
If he is then good luck to him. All he would be doing is helping to pay Foreign aid, MPs expenses and huge annual wage increases, benefitsAnother bloody tax evader.
for all the immigrants etc,etc,etc,etc.
If everyone paid their taxes, our good old NHS wouldn't be in such a sorry state.

There's a shop called Kul - 30 Chang Moi Tad Mai Road. If you can't find what you want in there, it doesn't exist! Tel no 053 233 833 or 053 233 318. There's another place just across the road with a fair selection too.

Borax

Does anyone know where I can buy borax in CM? At home it's available in chemists but the couple I've been into haven't heard of it. Alternatively, does anyone know how to eradicate these pesky little ants?!

I don't have gum disease. If anyone can recommend a dentist/hygienist where I can get a decent clean, the type that takes 25-30 minutes, I'd be grateful. I don't mind paying more if it's a proper, thorough clean.

We buy really lean stuff from Rimping. 250g for 110 baht. Not as tasty as back home but pretty good.

If you are still using toilet paper you are doing it wrong. It is so much more hygienic to use the spray, then just dry with the paper. My main issue with visiting home in UK is that I will have to use toilet paper, it literally disgusts me after years being used to the spray-away method.
Obviously the signs are because they have thinner pipes here because Asians don't clean up the disgusting western way.
Totally agree. Such an erudite post! We will be installing Thai-style squirters in our European home.
We would too if it wasn't for the temperature of the European water. Ouch!!

I had a clean at Elite. It took less than 10 minutes and cost 1000 baht. I wouldn't recommend them for cleaning.could someone who has experience there give the name of the recommended dentist for basic cleaning? thank you.
Dr Benchaporn
However, for dental work they're superb.
Was the dentist Dr. Benchaporn?
I can't remember his name. Tall, skinny bloke, early 30's, wears glasses.

Saw a microwave pressure cooker in Robinsons for 490baht including some plastic microwave dishes with lids. Appeared to be good quality and would have bought one myself but the instructions were only in Thai.

ForbiddenSorry - what is "verboten"?
Haha! Little plastic safety pins with no sharp edges! You could give them to a baby to play with (as long as they weren't put in their mouth of course)!

I've ordered from ebay companies based in China twice now and the goods haven't arrived. Received refunds so no issues there but is this common? Receiving packages from the UK with no problems and receive stuff from China ok when in the UK.
Has anyone else had this problem or can explain what the issue may be? They were just little plastic knitting accessories so nothing potentially dangerous, illegal or dodgy!
