  1. If not a package then Tiger Airways have reasonable budget fares ... And very good planes.

Book online because different times can have very different prices.

For butget hotels, the Hotel 81 group and the Fragrance group are very cheap (in Geylang)

about S$70/night, good for a place which otherwise has very expensive hotels.

  2. I think people like 7-11 and Family Mart because they know what to expect when they walk in

as they are all almost identical.

No reason why a 'private' shop could not provide the same products/service but 7-11 and FM

have a big advantage in that anyone walking/driving down the road will recognise them immediately

and will have a good idea whether or not they sell what they are looking for.

I would guess it must be a fairly good business (in the right location) since there

are so many of them and I have'nt seen many, if any closing down.

No personal experience though, except as a shopper.

  3. Can anyone suggest a good dry-cleaner in town ? I normally get my dress, well better

stuff done at hotels while on holidays, but that's a nuisance and expensive (at hotel rates).

All the shops seem to be just wet laundry's. I guess there must be some

around as business guy's must get their suits cleaned and

the government folks who wear those brillant white ceremonial

uniforms must get them dry-cleaned somewhere.

  4. Amazing news on the Grape Nuts front!

Grape Nuts sighted at FRIENDSHIP SUPERMARKET!

I am pretty sure they have never stocked this before.

I guess they want to get in on the Villa Grape Nuts action.

    What's next? Carrefour? Tops? 7-11?

Come on Jingthing ... Admit you asked Friendship to stock them

in case Villa ran out again :o

Decided to try them after all Jt's free advertising ... quite nice.

  5. I am curious, I have noticed that many of the thai made commercials (Meaning commercials made in thailand, not dubbed) are not the same or not about what the actual product is, or they are just people singing and acting crazy yet the product is buble gum

anyone else notice this, or is it just me

    Yep!

    I noticed that too.

    But this is nothing new.

Take the good old car shows, where models in bikini are posing next to the cars. We can ask the same. What do they actually have to do with the product . This we see in many other countries as well.

Yup, there would be far fewer visitors at the auto show if they got rid of the 'lovelies' I suspect.

  6. its unfortunate that whenever many men say they are going to thailand, that people get a funny little smirk on their face which says 'haha...i know why youre going there' implying that its for the hooker bars.

for many it is true. but for many it is not.

It is usually true. Don't feel sorry for us! :D

Yes, and even if I don't partake, it's a lot better than sitting with my old

mates back in farangland, endlessly complaining about the weather, their pensions, the

price of a drink and the rowdy football fans at the other end of the bar. :o

  7. As other posters have said - best to get a pre-paid sim card upon arrival, can get them from any phone shop, 7-11 etc with photo ID.

    Why??

Looks like my comment about photo id has raised some eyebrows. I am fairly certain that for the last couple of pre-paid sim cards I purchased in Thailand - I had to show some kind of ID. I may be mistaken about the photo bit (from memory I only had my passport, so used that).

Does anyone recall a few years ago that C.A.T. introduced some legislation requiring new mobile account holders in Thailand to show ID, or at least record full name etc - when purchasing a new SIM card? Please correct me if I am mistaken. Again - this is just from memory and I may be right off the mark here, but I thought it was something to do with authorities requiring records on mobile phone SIM users in case of anything illegal being done with a mobile phone - eg using a mobile to trigger a bomb. (SVB awaits an avalanche of posts telling him he is an idiot :o )

Again - if I am wrong I will happily be corrected.

    Anyone?

That was correct a few years ago, even people who had not previously registered were then required to do so.

However the requirement no longer (seems) to apply.

  8. My recent experience.

It took 3 attempts before my wife's new ATM card arrived from Barclays UK in March this year. All together it took nearly 4 weeks and many phone calls.

A courier service was used each time, but on the first 2 occasions the package was returned "unable to deliver". I have no idea why - they have our correct address and there is someone here to receive post 24/7.

I am currently awaiting delivery of my new card and 'card reader' so that I can regain on-line access to my account. The first one was sent out in early April, the second late April and the third 7th May - nothing yet.

Add to this, that despite having an address in Thailand, and regularly phoning to tell them I am still here, the bank often 'freeze' the cards for security reasons (most embarrasing when trying to pay for the groceries with a long queue behind you at the check-out).

There, I've got it off my chest.

I wish you better luck Hans. (and suggest you have a back-up plan)

Chickenslegs. I have received courier envelopes for a number of years (DHL) and have never

had one go missing (but I live in a large well known apartment with good staff who sign for it).

Perhaps your home address is difficult to find ?. It may be better to have the

package sent to you C/O the address of your nearest courier depot, and then they can call you to collect.

This may also be a better option for the OP. You would need to find a suitable local depot depending on the carrier used

and advise the bank of their address and tell them exactly how to address it (fax it) rather than let some 16 year old

bank mail clerk in the UK decide.

Just a thought, as Iv'e done this before.

  9. Ok, This maybe a stupid question......

I have just had to transfer money to buy a car, but the rate against my pound was 60bish. I am looking to invest / develop a business idea of mine which will cost me an awful awful lot more than my car did!

Just wondering if you guys can you help me out? Do you think its likely to go up again and if so soon? Is there a trend that the rate normally follows? Or just personal opinions?

I have been here for a long time but up until I moved to CM I earned my money in Baht so the EXRate was never an issue to me.

Any help would be appreciated as the difference between 60 + 70 over a lot of money will mean a lot

    Thanks :o

The Baht has been trending higher against the Dollar for about seven years and against the

Pound for around four. Major currencies dont move all that fast, so I doubt you'll see the gains you

would like to see over the short term. And of course the the Baht could become even stronger.

  10. I have done a search of the archives and cannot find any service that fits this description. Not even sure if it exists! I am looking for a service that will pick up a document at Location A (Thai Air Office) and deliver it to Location B (my hotel). Both locations are in Bangkok and Thai Air will not courier the document to my hotel. It must be picked up in person. I am in Hong Kong which is why I need this service. Any suggestions?

    Thank you!

call the concierge at the hoteL works for me.

Good work t.s, I would not have considered that, but you probably stay at better hotels than me :o

  11. Couple of mates fom US tried to get their phones unlocked and a local SIM

fitted but the shops said the could not do this with these particular phones for some reason.

Probably best to bring your phone and try, failing that a new simple phone

is only a couple of thousand or even a thousand for a second hand job.

  12. I've been charged (by landlords) as high as 8baht/unit (didn't stay around long).

Yes, most landlords seem to charge Bt 5 and up ... Bt 8 is a bit rich :o

  13. If you us the + symbol, as in +44 xxx-- then it will default to 001 ... the most expensive.

007 is next cheapest while still good quality.

009 is the cheapest with a further reduction in quality.

Just find which one suits your requirements for cost/connection quality.

  14. my database is quite small, though, so i guess ms access could just be the right tool for the job.

It's a fairly steep learning curve compared to a spreadsheet, but may be worth it.

  15. Naka; can you clarify what you mean? The bid/offer prices are clearly stated, and as long as no design fee involved (for making jewelery) then my understanding from friends is that the bid/offer price is the actual price/payment? Is that not the case? Cheers!
Buy one day and sell in the same shop the next ... Expect to loose 10% or more regardless of

the buy price in the window.

    Naka.

I've had a bit of personal experience with this. The problem is that the re-manufacturing cost

is whatever they say it is ... And will they really re-manufacture it anyway

or just give it a bit of a polish and put it in the showcase ?

You could always buy a 1/4 Baht chain at (Buy 13,400 Sell 13,500) for 3,375 but

I'm darn sure they will not give you 3,350 for it if you wanted to sell it back to

    them the next day. :o
