  1. Facebook’s Privacy Checkup Has Arrived

Facebook doesn’t want you over-sharing — seriously! — and it’s ready to prove it.

The social network is asking all of its 1.3 billion users to complete a privacy checkup, a short online exercise where users review who they’re sharing with on the platform. Facebook announced the checkup in May, but only tested it with a small subset of users over the past several months. Now, it’s ready for a full rollout.

The checkup includes a review of who can see your posts (categories like “public,” “friends” or “only me”), which third-party apps you’ve linked your account to, and which information you’re currently sharing in your bio. None of these privacy controls are new — Facebook is simply drawing attention to them in a new way.

For the majority of users, this will be a new experience. Earlier this year, Facebook started alerting users who share posts publicly to review their settings, but the company has never actively asked users to check their app permissions or bio information, said Paddy Underwood, a product manager on Facebook’s privacy team.

Facebook’s privacy settings — which have changed frequently over the years — are notorious for their complexity. Navigating them can be particularly difficult for new users, as there’s a slew of different settings to keep track of. For example, you can keep some parts of your profile private, share other parts with friends only, and still share other elements publicly. You can keep your friends list private — although not entirely private if you have friends with different settings — and users can tag you in photos you haven’t approved (unless, of course, you change the settings to manually approve each one). Confused yet?

This expansive list of privacy settings is why, after 10-plus years of encouraging users to connect and share with as many friends as possible, the company is now trying to clear things up. “When people are surprised by who can see their stuff, people have a bad experience,” says Underwood. “Nobody likes being surprised.”

The ultimate goal: if you fully understand which of your friends can see your post, there’s a good chance you’ll share more often.

Given Facebook’s history with privacy, the past six months have provided a noticeable change of pace. In addition to the earlier prompt for users posting publicly, Facebook changed the default post setting for new users to “friends” when it first announced the checkup tool in May. The default was previously set to “public,” meaning new users had to manually change the audience for their post.

At Facebook’s F8 developers conference in April, the company announced that it will begin unbundling app permissions, a change that allows users to pick and choose which elements of their profiles they share with third-party developers.

The underlying message, once again, centers around engagement. “The more people trust Facebook Login, the more likely they’ll be to use it,” Underwood said.

Facebook will prompt users to complete the privacy check over the next week or so on the Web, but you aren’t required to participate. Facebook will follow up at some point down the road with users who skip the checkup, or users can initiate the process at any time by accessing the Privacy Shortcuts in the upper right-hand corner of the home screen near settings.

More than 30 percent of Facebook’s 1.3 billion monthly active users visit the site on mobile only, meaning they won’t receive the privacy checkup prompt. Facebook will come out with a mobile version of the checkup after the company receives feedback from the desktop version, says Underwood.

  5. Five tourists hurt in Phuket tour boat mishap

PHUKET: Five tourists, including one Australian and one Malaysian, were injured late this morning (January 30) when their boat was hit by a strong wave about one kilometre off the coast of Chalong.

A staff member from Andawaree Co Ltd, which operated the tour, said the boat was hit by a wave just as it passed Koh Kiaw, en-route to Phi Phi island from Phuket.

On board were 40 tourists from a range of countries, but a large majority of Americans.

Five women were hurt when they fell down, after they lost their balance when the boat was hit by the wave.

A representative from the Phuket Emergency Medical Institute of Thailand (EMIT) rescue team told The Phuket News one tourist had an injury to her ear, and the other four had back and muscle pain from falling.

After the tourists fell, the boat driver turned back to the shore immediately and the five injured were sent to Phuket International Hospital.

The tour company representative said one tourist, who had a minor bruising to her head, would stay in the hospital overnight, but the rest had been discharged.

“All medical charges will be covered by the company insurance,” she said.

  6. ‘Many foreigners working illegally’, say officials

    by: Nattha Thepbamrung

PHUKET: Santi Udomkiratak, Deputy Honorary Consul of the Russian Federation for the provinces of Phuket, Krabi and Phang Nga, has spoken about yesterday’s “anti Russian business” protest in Bang Tao, saying Thai people cannot complain about Russian businesses that are operating legally.

    1359440503_1.jpg

    Yesterday's protest in Bang Tao.

But yesterday's protest has drawn attention to the issue of foreigners working illegally in Phuket, with authorities saying many foreigners are working here without work permits, or doing different jobs to what their work permit states.

The large group of mainly Thai taxi drivers protested in Bang Tao yesterday (January 28) against Russian businesses who are, they say, undercutting the market and taking business from locals.

    newsjs

The Thai protestors were not concerned about whether the Russians were operating legally or not – they just wanted them out – but they also asked officials to check the legality of the businesses.

In trying to deal with the problem, local government officials have suggested a crackdown on business licences and work permits for foreigners, which they hope might help solve the problem.

Some of the businesses targeted yesterday are suspected of operating illegally, authorities say.

Yesterday afternoon there was a meeting between the protestors and provincial officials, lead by Ma-ann Samran, the president of Cherngtalay Or Bor Tor.

The meeting concluded that to help solve the problem, authorities must ensure businesses are operating legally, and staff have work permits, Mr Ma-ann said.

Mr Ma-ann said local authorities are going to strictly enforce these requirements.

If foreigners are caught working without a work permit, they will be arrested immediately, he said.

Mr Ma-ann said there were two main issues, the first was foreigners holding a work permit but doing a different job than was stated on the permit, and the second was foreigners who didn’t have a work permit at all.

Mr Ma-ann said that the owner of Alex Tour, a Thai man named Dan Wannabaworn, visited him yesterday to confirm his business was now closed.

Mr Ma-ann said Alex Tour, targetted yesterday by the protesters, was operating legally with a business licence, but the Russian staff did not have work permits.

There were six other businesses in the same area that were also closed yesterday, which were suspected of operating illegally, Mr Ma-ann said.

Mr Ma-ann told The Phuket News, “there are only 51 foreigners who hold a work permit to work in the Thalang area,” which included the three main “foreigner areas” of Pak Lok, Cherng Talay and Bang Tao.

There were many people working illegally in the area, he said.

Many of the people who held the correct work permit were connected to hotels in high positions, so if officials saw foreigners working in jobs such as tour guides, they might be suspected of having no work permit, added Mr Ma-ann.

Meanwhile, Mr Santi told The Phuket News that another meeting will be held soon to try to find a solution, involving him, the Tourist Police, Immigration Police and Provincial officials.

“This is a complicated issue so, we must have a talk among many sectors involved,” Mr Santi said.

“When Russian businesses are operating illegally, they can be prosecuted. But the ones that are legal – we cannot complain about them. Authorities must strongly manage this issue.”

Representatives from two Russian-owned businesses had already approached Mr Santi to discuss the issue of some Thai people opposing Russian businesses.

“I agree with the cases where Russian businesses have been closed because a Thai person opens the tour business, but hires Russian staff who do not have work permits.

“But when the Russians do business legally, we cannot ask them to close.”

  7. Well, I suppose I won't be a Thaivisa user any longer. I only come to the forum when I get the e-mail notification of news articles. I never just go to Thaivisa any longer as I did when I first came here 5 years ago.

I have alternative e-mail address's, but they happen to be hotmail, so I guess they've done themselves in.

When I read the recommendation to get a g-mail address, the first thing that popped into my mind was "I wonder how much Google is paying them to get rid of Yahoo add'ys?" I don't use Google for anything since they threw the Chinese dissidents under the bus a few years back. Plus, they are in just a bit to close with the US gummit. Way to much co-operation with the NSA.

    Sorry Thaivisa...you've lost me.

TV,s dictatorial attitude between The Nation and BK post news papers is bad enough, but having to register another email address just to read TV,Forum of which half is crap anyway is going too far. You have lost me to.

You don't need to change if you don't like, but don't expect notifications, password reset and newsletter to work all the time. We don't dictate anything, this is a recommendation if you want to be sure to receive communications from us.

To use the forum with a previous yahoo email address is not a problem, you can of course continue to use our services, but new members can't sign up with a Yahoo address.

  8. The reason given for this is that the protection adopted by Yahoo (and possibly Hotmail?) brand ThaiVisa as Spam generators (because of their bulk mail) and will put them on blacklists such as Spamhaus, etc, where the IP address is stopped from sending to that Yahoo/Hotmail address. A real pain in the butt.

    You Are 100% correct!

There are apparently ways around this using a digital signing technology known as DKIM which works with your outgoing email server.

yes, that together with SPF records and sending emails through SMTP should pretty much solve the delivery problems.

(DKIM, SPF and sending through SMTP are solutions that can be implemented for FREE)

Thaivisa are using DKM, SPF and using SMTP via a professional bulk email provider.

  10. Since Thai Visa introduced the new format for the forum I find it very difficult to read on my mobile.

The forum always opens in the web format. If I scroll down to the bottom of the page and press "mobile format" (or whatever the exact wording is) then I can be lucky sometimes a get a "kind of mobile format". It's not tight fitting and when I scroll the screen wobbles all over the place.

I've almost given up trying to use my mobile for this site.

    Anyone else have these problems?

Can you please verify that the mobile skin works ok now?
