  1. So is it more expensive than Udon Thani ?

Also how do the other cities in Isaan compare?

Any tips for arriving at the Khon Kaen bus station would be helpful.........

Once you arrive at the bus station which is is a ridiculously engineered new project with no air and way the heck out of town. My advice is if you can take Chan Tours VIP they will actually go to the old bus station after they stop at the new station. Last time I did it everyone stayed on to go to the old bus station lol.

Grab a hotel somewhere in the area downtown I would suggest. Check Agoda for prices. They rent motorbikes at a couple places next to the Pullman hotel but they will want 300 per day unless you can get them down to 200 for multiple days.

  2. First regardless of what some posters say KK and Isaan is not necessarilly cheap for many items. Case in point you can rent a new Honda Click in Pattaya for instance for 100 baht per day but in KK you will pay 300 per day. Tuktuks will charge more for you if they can get away with it.

Hotels are actually better value in Phuket than in KK.

There are some nice things about KK but don't believe all the bullocks about it being cheaper than elsewhere.

  3. Not to mention this is the worst possible time to buy property. I think a stock market favorite is appropriate here... "never try to catch a falling knife". Wait a few years until the market bottoms out.

People have been saying that for over 10 years now......and the prices just keep going up every year.

There may be a correction coming (especially in the condo market) but overall the prices seem to continuously go up.

Thailand has a way of performing the opposite of what we consider to be common sense.

    b

The correction is here. Are you a real estate agent lol.

  4. I have no idea of the percentages, but I do know from personal experience that a LOT of Thai woman are good, sincere and honest. I have seen them do incredibly kind things repeatedly, over many years.

Agreed but unfortunately this is becoming an increasingly materialistic society. Generally I think Thai people are very good on average but they are succeptible to money like their Western counterparts. And why do all the Western men run around like two week millionaires if they don't want to attact gold diggers?

  5. And this study is based on your two week holiday? How about some backup on these numbers. I would probably put it 70 percent gold diggers if given the shovel and 30 percent potentially not but that is just my opinion.

Perhaps 70% of the Thai females who are interested in farangs are gold-diggers. But then only about 10% of the Thai female population are in this category. So 70% of this 10% is not a huge number. Unfortunately, these types of females are what farangs are exposed to, by and large. Hence the constant negativity.

Anyone that believes that 70% of Thai women are gold diggers is spending too much time in a bar populated by poor Issan princess'...

I had this convo with a Thai lady not 2 days ago... She asked me why so many farang wind up with the bottom end of ladies in Thai society... My only reply was that they are desparate for affection and seek solace with the first bar girl that speaks Angrit and shows them any attention... Motives are never addressed...

Easy to tell those farang that have gone down this route as they post the usual drivel about being wronged by a Thai lady and losing everything... You make your own bed, so sleep in it...

First off I only date non bargirls generally professional and educated women not that there is anything wrong with anyone outside this sphere. Remember a gold digger is someone who will chase the money first and I believe this is true with the vast majority of women if given the opportunity. Now remember I am saying a woman coming in contact with someone with money like never before say for instance a farang or rich Thai. Just because they may be with someone who does not have money does not mean they would not chase the money if given the chance. I will stick with my numbers no offense intended.:)

  6. A constitution is just a start. Not a panacea.

No a better start is not killing people and treating all equal and removing prejudice not quietly turning a blind eye. Talk is cheap. It means little or nothing when the backing is not there. Sadly South Africa is a prime eample of the "iron law of oligarchy" where a minority becomes the majority and becomes guilty of doing the same thing that was done to them. Unfortunately they seem to be taking it a step further.

Whenever I see sites about "white genocide" in South Africa most lead to neo-Nazi sites selling tee-shirts with Hitler, Himmler, and Goebbels ... I have a cousin from Derry in Johannesburg and they seem quite content there and happy....

That's a rather ridiculous statement. Deal with the issue. Rural farmers are being threatened. Is your cousin a farmer in Johannesburg? Duh.

  8. Thailand might be wise to look at the ground breaking constitution of SOUTH AFRICA:

Under the heading "Equality", the section states:
    9. (1) Everyone is equal before the law and has the right to equal protection and benefit of the law.
    (2) Equality includes the full and equal enjoyment of all rights and freedoms. To promote the achievement of equality, legislative and other measures designed to protect or advance persons, or categories of persons, disadvantaged by unfair discrimination may be taken.
    (3) The state may not unfairly discriminate directly or indirectly against anyone on one or more grounds, including race, gender, sex, pregnancy, marital status, ethnic or social origin, colour, sexual orientation, age, disability, religion, conscience, belief, culture, language and birth.
    (4) No person may unfairly discriminate directly or indirectly against anyone on one or more grounds in terms of subsection (3). National legislation must be enacted to prevent or prohibit unfair discrimination.
    (5) Discrimination on one or more of the grounds listed in subsection (3) is unfair unless it is established that the discrimination is fair.

From guidelines in constitutions, I would assume later court cases can be argued to clarify more details of law, such as the right of transgender people to change the gender on their ID card, the right of same sex marriages, etc., etc.

Somewhat bizarrely, the awareness of civil rights issues of transgender persons is much higher here than interest in gay and lesbian issues. The former is about gender identity and the latter is about sexual orientation identity.

From a human rights POV in Thailand and globally, of course BOTH are important.

From the article in the OP, it is sounding like the Thai obsession with the culturally specific idea of "third gender" (instead of just transgender persons) is all they are willing to deal with now ... and to leave out gay and lesbian equality language.

I wouldn't be quoting South Africa. Words mean little if bot backed by actions.

  9. I'm not a complete noob in financial matters, but after all those years I still don't understand why a low inflation is so bad.

Low inflation=No money in the market to drive up prices!! (very simplified)

If they got rid of the privately held Federal Reserve in the U.S. for instance (this is not a govt entitiy) that receive a commission in the form of interest on money printed by the govt Treasury they would have little inflation to worry about. Bankers love inflation.

  10. Turns out the chess master got rooked and Prez Obama with Chancellor Merkel are the ones making all the moves.

The US and Nato are playing chess while Putin and Russia continue to play checkers....Putin never played chess against anyone he couldn't put in jail and it has become patently obvious.

Note that Hollande said the sanctions will continue if Russia does not begin to cooperate to create a peaceful resolution.

The talks begin Jan 15 among Putin, Ukraine Pres Poroshenko, Merkel, Hollande and someone from the US,, perhaps SecState John Kerry. Putin and Obama who love each other so much each agreed that Prez Obama will not attend.....Putin after all thinks it will be unseemly for him to be seen down on this knees in the same room where Obama is standing.

Ridiculous post. What are you smoking lol.

  11. looks like the Saudi's are in this for the long term 2 to 5 years of low prices ,this is just the beginning. most smart oil producers put hedges on that run up to 18 months after that they will feel the pain or if they take off their hedges early. so this is just the beginning they want all future oil explorations to grind to a halt all alternative energy efforts to disappear. the next shoe to drop is oil industry workers are going to start to disappear from Thailand throwing their condos on a falling real estate market.

Do you seriously believe this is all about Saudis worried about fracturing? So in order to preserve future oil revenue they drop the price so far down they lose a fortune? Don't you find this more than a bit odd? Can people not put 2 and 2 together?

Further if you research you will find strong evidence that Saudi reserves are much smaller than they claim which gives them even more reason not to lower the price.

So Saudis are shooting themselves in the foot do you believe this?

  12. Vietnam war and American investment and infrastructure also opening up to other countries as an investment and tourism hub in asia. Thailand has been very lucky due to us and other western nations involvement. They claim they were never colonized but they reaped the benefits of being colonized. Now they will find it harder with their neighbors who will eventually surpass them such as Ph, Vietnman.
