  1. You would never dream of putting a house in your girlfriend's/wife's name back in your home country, so why do it here? :) I just don't get it. :D

Coz the laws here do not allow individual foreigner to own land and building.

Then rent!!! The only reason most foreigners buy is because they are convinced by their wives/girlfriends who know it is a retirement fund for them.

  2. And this is a surprise?

    Definitively !

Suvarnabhumi Airport ranks no.3 as outstanding airports from online voters. The first and the second ranking belonged to Singapore Airport and Hong Kong Airport, respectively.

National News Bureau of Thailand, September 9, 2009

Aww c'mon. You can't take those types of biased surveys seriously. Many people voting in these online surveys have probably never even used the other asian airports, so how would they appreciate the differences? It's like a fat guy on Bangla asking his ladyfriends if he was good in bed and then proudly proclaiming that according to a survey, he was ranked most hansum and capable of farang lovers.

I don't think BKK is as bad as it's made out to be, but it has serious issues related to safety & integrity. In comparison to the airport at Lagos, BKK is a gem, but so what? BKK may not be in the same league as ICN, KUL, HKG or SIN but functions as an International airport and gets the job done. It works for me and I accept it as it is. I and the other hundreds of thousands of travelers don't go to an airport for the "experience" or the food, or a massage or chit chat with a taxi driver. We use it because we have to go somewhere. On that criteria, BKK is good enough. If I had the choice, I'd rather use SIN or KUL, but I don't, so I'm stuck with Miss Swamp Thang.

    :) good one

  3. Laughing my ass off that the guy submitted his application as a version of "cops" but in Thailand. Nowhere does the show cops show law enforcement or the system in a negative fashion... only the arrested, etc. I can tell you right now if he pulled this trick with law enforcement in the U.S. or elsewhere he'd be in a court pretty quickly. This is why he bolted from Tland.

So the guy basically lied on the application which is what I thought all along. He then proceeds to show the tourists and the Thai system in the most negative light possible for the sake of viewership.

Thanks Ahole for damaging Tourism and putting foreign film making in Thailand back 50 years so you can make a few quid.

    Pathetic.

  4. Also have to call blackboards, chalkboards now...crazy....!!!

Ridiculous. Yet we still call whiteboards, whiteboards? Being white I find that racist and insulting, I also just insulted myself by saying that I am white. I am going to sue myself for the mental trauma I caused myself.

Where will it all end. We are all people and if we need to describe something then we use whatever words are available to do so. A board that is black is a blackboard. People who take offense at these things obviously have nothing whatsoever in their lives to worry about or they are just looking for sympathy or money.

This PC stuff pisses me off. People are so terrified of repercussions that they would rather employ someone who is of 'ethnic' minority than a honky.

I have read many times in the past that the police in the U.K are trying to recruit more people from ethnic minorities. As a white person then surely that is being racist against me!

I work around the world with all races of people, if they are a good person then they are good, if they are a tosser then they are a tosser, regardless of race or religion.

It's really quite simple... Divide and Conquer.... that is what this game is all about... no one can be singularly more powerful than the elite controlling things.

  5. Yes this is very interesting. I can't imagine someone burning trash and allowing it to waft through a neighbour's windows in the early morning hours or any time of day for that matter. I don't think I could handle it. Plus I can only imagine the constant dogs barking as I have heard enough of it in populated areas. I stayed at a nice new hotel in Chiang Mai once and a house less than 30 yards away had pens with dogs in them (not sure why) and I have never heard anything like it in my life. It was like a pack of wolves as they would bark and howl through the night and it sounded like they were outside my door. Like I said lovely hotel in the afternoon but during the night it was unbearable. I can sleep through almost anything but not like that.

I still do not undertand how and why Thais put up with the dogs like they do.

  6. This from the website we are not allowed to mention.

"At 4am this morning, one of Phuket's leading American residents and business identities was mugged by three katoeys as he sought shelter from a downpour under an awning in Patong's famous Soi Bangla walking street.

He told Phuketwan that when he went to report the crime at Patong's central Kathu Police Station this afternoon, he found himself queuing behind a British backpacker who had also been rolled by katoeys overnight."

A couple of nights later the same man was crossing Rat-U-Thit when a motorcycle taxi deliberately swerved towards him seemingly with intent to do harm & yelling out f.... you farang. After having to take evasive action to avoid being run down he raised his hand in reply to the taunt & yelled out f... you too. The motorbike taxi guy then stopped, got off his bike, ran over to the man & slapped him hard on the face. The man knew better than to fight back knowing full well that if he did he would soon be pounced upon by more cowardly thugs which is the norm in Patong if a farang thinks he is going to have a one on one. It also makes sense considering the sullied reputation of motorbike taxi drivers following the recent incident of one killing someone with a gun in a 7/11 store while out on bail for another killing.

BTW this same man has been pro active in proposing a very sensible solution for the jet ski operators. There is a positive side to the slapping incident in that some local Thais came over & apologised for the shocking behaviour.

Unfortunate but the circumstances seem a bit ridiculous for someone who is a vet of Phuket. Taking shelter beside three ladyboys? Carrying around a coveted item at 4 a.m. in the morning on Bangla. Not too wise or perhaps alcohol induced actions.

This is almost beyond belief. I wonder how the sales of this product are going? An old motherboard screwed to the outside of a box. Probably a light inside?

Surely it must be a joke. I thought I'd try and crack it by running Lalita Petkijnam through the anagram machine but the best it could come up with was Pajama Lentil Kit. We can laugh but maybe Lalita has found the Holy Grail of retailing and in a few months we'll see her on Dragons' Den raising the funds to take it forward to a world shattering IPO.....

On the other hand sell two or three to gullible idiots and she's made more money than a teacher does in a couple of months. There must be a law against it? :)

Seems like it's not just being touted on TV - here's their website and in answer to all us sceptics, here is an excerpt from the helpful FAQ that comes along with the money back guarantee.

Is this a joke or a fake product ?

Boondee Magic Box is neither a toy nor a joke or a fake products. It is the real, true Hypnosis machine. The miracle was generated by a great Amulet inside the machine connecting to the secret of electronic circuit. © Copy Rights protection. The important of this machine is the assembly process of amulet and complexity of electronic

Yes, it really ends like that.

I see the billing page has a thank you to "Thaksin". Interesting. Perhaps part of a larger plot to hypnotize the remainder of the population.

  9. The first incident of the bike I can see the reason for the fine. If you are referring to Bangla being closed at night then it should be closed to all incoming vehicles and bikes. Walking a bike is still taking a vehicle past a boundary.

The second incident is clearly wrong and they should have stood their ground but odds are the guy had the passport. Sounds like desperation to me. The cop's actions are rather pathetic in this case. Perhaps a good argument to have a tourist police?

The third incident seems odd to me - not that I am saying it didn't occur. I wonder if the waitress is responsible for broken glasses and she claimed it was the customer. Of course it is ridiculous that any astute owner/manager would charge a customer for a glass even if they intentionally broke it if they were spending that kind of money.

  10. Here's a question for the forum. Has Phuket ever had an independence movement or talk of becoming its own nation? I am not advocating this but wonder if it has ever been discussed. Phuket is rather unique in Thailand (both good and bad) and suffers unfairly from a lot of the fallout from the political crisis in other parts of the nation.

  11. The U.S. will not collapse but it is in for a long rough ride. The printing presses have started. Local and State governments already in a tight spot will find themselves worse off as income tax revenues decline. This will lead to new and "inventive" forms of taxation and cutting of services. Obama has failed miserably to adopt a single payer health care system that would make U.S. business more competitive as well as help insured and uninsured Americans. It's a real mess.

As the U.S. continues to print money inflation is inevitable. The only thing preventing mass inflation right now is the fact no one is spending and the fact that during the false oil rally to $170 per barrel there was a large round of price increases in food and commodities that were never rolled back. This cannot last forever. Spending will return albeit slowly. However, there is a dark horse in all of this that is quite disturbing. It is the coupling of the U.S. dollar with unregulated offshore trading of oil. In short it is once again Goldman Sachs vs. the U.S. Gov't. Goldman appears to be winning once more. As the dollar continues to sink there will be more and more dollars placed in commodities as a hedge. As the dollar slides it will require more and more dollars to buy a barrel of oil. As oil continues to rise in an unregulated market commodities will rise correspondingly. These factors will spark inflation. It is not more than one year away in my opinion.

  12. OH, OH, my dear friend, Orang! Children have a way of grabbing your heart strings and not letting go!

Happened to me 5 years ago with a little girl I help support. If it was just her mother our relationship would have ended 4 days after we met. But, I visited the family and little Fong has truly grabbed my heart. Now she's a gangly girl of 8.

Nice photo Ian... good to see some good Canucks out there in Thailand...

  13. http://www.bangkokpost.com/travel/travelne...popularity-poll

In third place last year, Thailand has slipped twelve places to 15th in the latest "favourite destination" survey conducted by the UK edition of Conde ' Nast Traveller Magazine to determine the winners of this year's Readers' Travel Awards.

Readers of the magazine voted Italy their favourite destination, the country scoring highly for its food, restaurants, culture and climate, while Kenya and Mexico were best value for money, Brazil offered the warmest welcome and hospitality, South Africa had the greatest variety, and India the most glorious scenery.

I've been to Mexico many times. Thailand is far greater value for the money. Anywhere in Africa is dangerous and hardly any county in Africa has a stable economy. Africa is a very interesting country though, and has sights not available anywhere else in the world.

Saftey wise, I believe Brazil would not rank as high as Thailand.

I always wonder who writes these destination surveys and who is paying them.

Precisely... all major Mexican resorts are basically priced in line with San Diego, etc. However, with the downturn in the U.S. economy I'd venture to say these U.S. cities are actually cheaper than major Mexican resorts as the Mexicans will soak their guests. Must be a full page ad somewhere in the magazine for Mexico and a few other of these countries picked. Anyone see the mag just look for the ads and let us know.

  14. we know its really that your super kinky. But seriously rocks work well. If you even reach down to the street and pretend to pick up a rock then a lot of dogs will scatter.

My aim has improved quite a bit since moving to CM.

    What about pepper spray?

  15. OK, I think the OP has the picture now.

I have to admit, when I first arrived, I thought I might start a small import/export business, selling unique Thai handicrafts/textile art, etc. on a web-based site.

I have quite a bit of experience in this sort of thing- spent most of the early part of my life traveling and buying artifacts, jewelry, antique rugs, paintings, etc. worldwide and then selling them in the US (both wholesale and retail).

5 seconds after I got here, I realized that everything along this line that I might have done successfully in the past....has been done to death by about a million people now. 20 years ago, maybe even 10 years ago, you might have got your foot in the door.

The problem is, a lot of people come to Thailand, decide they want to stay, but aren't flush with cash. So they all start a business.

The above posts are spot-on; there are literally 100's of thousands of people scrapping and scrabbling for an ever-decreasing slice of the retail pie.

I do know a few successful farang here who have a successful business. They are very much an exception to the rule.

Everything you think might be a hot new idea, has been thought of by dozens before you, tried by a few, and rarely have been successful.

Not a pessimist here; just saying it like it is.
