  1. Dear all

my older sister (46) is coming out to visit me end of March to 19th April 2010, I have experienced songkran only once before in pattaya, and it is extremely dangerous to be in the city for more than 2 days, where can I take my Big Sis without her getting soaked every 5 min's .

    Anywhere will do

The Songkran dates are expected to be 12th April -20th April?

    Singapore.

but seriously, why not head to somewhere with less of a party atmosphere, hua hin? but you will get a bit wet I am sure.

I was in Hua Hin a few years ago for Songkran. It basically took place in around the bars and on a few other streets. It was actually a lot of fun. The Thais are pretty gentle people and it was interesting to see how they would softly throw the water or take care not to hit someone in the face. Probably a departure from my gfriend and I on the roof of the hotel with a water hose spraying the Chinese parade below. Some of the women in the parade did not look too happy with our antics but I think the Thais appreciated it. :)

  2. I have seen them recently doing their rounds in the Queen's Park in BKK.

I remember a young, very attractive and very much for sex, woman in Belgium who was running her shop alone. Got visited repeatedly by these guys and ended up converting and allowing sex to her husband only once a week. Lasted a few years.

A lot of Western women must already be converted.

  3. So bottom line:

    > The "Reds" want elections, the "Yellows" dont.

    > Would it be accurate to therefore define the Reds as Democratic, and the Yellows as Undemocratic?

    > That being the case, why dont they define these political movements as such, and get away from non-politically-descriptive terminology dealing with colors. It would clarify things for most casual observers, and place things into a clearer political context.

I think both sides want elections if they know they can win.

  4. When I came to thailand for the first time(about 15 years ago ) and we stayed at the little duck hotel which also have their minibars fully stuffed. My cheapskate friend got so upset about when he brought a lady companion to the room that while he was in the shower they would take a drink or a piece of chocolate.

He thought he had the solution and put the entire minibar content in his suitcase before he went out at night. He only forgot to replace it the next day so when the room service came to clean the room they charged him for a complete minibar stock list.

This happend twice to him in a two weeks holiday. :):D

Who says there is no justice in Thailand?

  5. A lot of people feel that some saturated fats such as coconut and palm oil are actually quite healthy. It is only the hydrogonated types that are unhealthy.

yes some interesting reading on this that these oils may actually be the healthy ones and that the hydrogenated oils are actually the dangerous oils... I think there may be a lot of truth to this as heart related problems have not decreased since the move away from butter and saturated fats...

  6. National Intelligence Agency... that has about as much validity as "Mexican Border"

You're underestimating Thailand's possibilities, know-how and Intelligence in general. Many agencies and military agencies are trained by US specialists in all kinds of disciplines.

France and Thailand have one thing in common....they both have around 65 million people; I realize that France is a lot more down the road than Thailand but to compare the Intelligence Agency of Thailand with the Mexican border is odd.

I think that Thailand's agencies are more sophisticated and also technologically more advanced than we assume. I think it's relatively easy to tap phones and mobile phones/cellphones :)

Reading between the lines of the article I think Thaksin advised his people indeed to refrain from using violence.

    We'll see.

    LaoPo

LaoPo - I meant it as a joke in terms of an oxymoron. I'm not comparing the security levels in Thailand to the security of the Mexican border. I think the Thai security forces are probably fairly well trained as you have mentioned

  7. I am very sure that the street vendor you talk about doesn't pay any tax - to the goverment that is.

But even though it sometimes might look as if the vendors are placed ramdomly they are not.

They will pay rent for that very spot where the vendor is. And if it is a popular spot like the one you saw, and they sell fro aprox. 5.000 baht a day, I would not be supriced if the rent was 2.500 baht a day.

2500 baht per day for a street vendor? Seems ridiculously high.

  8. It seems to me some here expect all the protection, laws and amenities they know exist in the West but at the same time still want things at Thai prices. Unfortunately, I don't think you can have it both ways. If someone knows where you can please inform us.

I agree with your general perspective...and I too have rented many a moto a various resort areas of Thailand without incident (though have heard of reports of various scams) and friends have rented jet-skis in Pattaya without incident. Unfortunately, there is a problem with some operators and some controls should be enacted to protect both the renters/tourists and owners. Basically, what it looks like to me is that the owners are trying to charge for "wear and tear" on their jet-skis that should be just a cost of doing business. The small scrapes and scratches on the sides/hulls are just what happens during normal use (hitting or skimming over stuff in the water). The operators have to accept these and not try to extort money from tourists for such things. Now, if there is major damage to a unit then compensation would be in order.

Although it may be somewhat a hassle for some why not take a few pics of the boat before the rental as everyone seems to carry a phone with a camera. Place the phone in a plastic bag and store it in pocket or on the boat. Has anyone done this? I know many people do this with car rentals.

Bingo... as much as I find many on this board to be quite well informed and not susceptible to being manipulated I have never seen ... hopefully its simply a bunch of pumpers associated with the show and reason will once again return to Thai Visa.

    Quoting GD

As you seem to have great insight. :)

Please list those of us who have been suckered and some proof please.

If I see the word "staged", again, your cred goes down the dunny again....... not that you had much to start with! :D

Just as I said, you have absolutely no credibility on this forum.

What I type here, I would gladly say to your face. :D

    Put up or shut up!

Who pissed in your cereal? :D

    You, with your infantile posts.

GungaDim glad to be of service... couldn't happen to a nicer guy... now finish your cereal and back to your coloring book. :D

  10. I think the show was a load of BS. It looks all staged and the reaction on here just shows what type of people we have on these boards.

    I completely agree! :):D:D

What's it like to be paddling in the children's pool?

    Out of your depth? :D

GungaDim... if this were a think tank you would be confined to the shallow end. :D

  12. However, there are scams all over the world every day.

The Real Hustle is a UK TV programme, it shows scams during every day locations.

OK, they are all set up I presume, but nevertheless scams everywhere, it just makes good TV.

My first trip to Thailand and I got scammed re: being taken to a Thai Craft Fair, you guessed it, ended up at a Gems Factory, I got my own back by making the Tuk Tuk driver take me back to my hotel in rush hour traffic, he wasn't happy, he kept wanting for me to get a motocy ride I didn't budge, he got more and more angry.

    Ended up making my day.

I was chilled, he was steaming :D

Perspective? I was seriously thinking about complaining about a scam the other day.........then I went to the open market and saw some severed pig heads on a table and a voice inside my head said, "and you think you are having a bad day......things could be a lot worse." :)

lol... let me give you an example of a scam here in the U.S. city of Los Angeles... for reasons unexplained but you will quickly figure out they do street cleaning twice per week even though the city is pretty much bankrupt and cost cutting measures are in order... the ticket has recently went form $40 to $60 for being parked during a "cleaning" day... my neighbour just received one... they'll never cut back on street cleaning because it is a cash cow for the city... in fact I'm sure they could reduce the city budget by cleaning three times per week instead of two... not to mention the $400 U.S. red light tickets, with intentionally shortened amber times, taken by photo boxes run by Lockhead all over the city
