  1. what a nice xenophobic country this is where farang is only good as walking ATM machine but can hardly own anything as land / house

thai should be forbidden to own land/house in other countries also... but 99,99% is poor and cannot afford to buy a house in our home countries, maybe that is the point of all this

Forget that approach simply disallow all ruling elite to invest in Western countries, stop all educational access and put up trade barriers until things change. Why do we put up with these double standards. Do the mentioned and things will change overnight. It only takes political balls.

  2. I would think the country with the greatest chance of overtaking the U.S. plain and simple would be China or India with South Korea having possibilities but constrained due to lack of population.

Sorry, that made me laugh out loud!

Don't understand what you are laughing about. You don't think China or India have the potential with their large populations and growing education and infrastructure as well as low production costs? As per Korea they are just too small a player but have rapidly grown in many areas including ship building in which Hyundai is completely self sufficient at the manufacturing level. Might be wise to post some rationale rather than just random comments.

  3. Goldman must have investments in those countries lol. I wouldn't trust GS farther then I could thrown them which wouldn't be very far considering how fat their asses have become by draining the public treasury in the U.S. and elsewhere.

I would think the country with the greatest chance of overtaking the U.S. plain and simple would be China or India with South Korea having possibilities but constrained due to lack of population. I also think Indonesia, Phillipines, Vietnam and Malaysia have significant room for growth but Mexico, Bangladesh or Nigeria what are they smoking?

  4. looking for beach front accommodation patong beach up to 1500 baht a night in october any advice appreciated

    Regards

    NB :)

Just travel up Nanai road if you want a really good deal. You can rent a guesthouse room for likely under 700 baht and still get king bed, sat tv, air cond and balcony. Also right near JungleCeylon there is a street with a bunch of guesthouses. Or you can stay in a hotel by the beach for double the amount and may like it less. I'd do the guesthouse and rent a motorbike. I may be doing the same in October. You can pm me if you need a listing of guesthouses. I have it somewhere on my comp as I was trying to find good internet.

  5. losworld: Thanks for the feedback. Both my friend and I consider the "remoteness" and quiet of the area to be big pluses. To us, Walking Street is a place to take visiting friend/family for a looksee. :)

When we looked at a few sample units, we didn't even know there is a gym. Where is it?

Do you have any comments about or encounters with the dogs (or cats...) mentioned above?

What were the problems with the plumbing?

Just noticed your post. Yes if you don't move around much it is a nice area. The only thing lacking outside of immediate nightlife (although there is some in Jomtien) is a large grocery store. The gym is on the second floor but sorry to say that it has not been kept up and the machines are rusted, etc. They may be repairable not sure. The restaurant downstairs is good value. As per the plumbing it appears to be a drainage problem with the toilet occasionally backing up. Don't really remember any bugs. As per dogs/cats there were a few on the nearly abandoned property next door but since you can get to the beach and road by going inside the perimeter I wouldn't think many problems. I rode in and out on my mbike daily for a month and didn't remember any problems with dogs/cats. However, I did enjoy the pool and all units are ocean view with nice sized balcony. Good luck and let me know how you make out.

  6. Switch to my preferred drink of choice white rum and coke zero or pepsi max. Actually doesn't taste too bad and very little chance of a hangover with low sugar content. If you want better taste in the mix 1/3 coke and 2/3 diet coke.

If this doesn't work vodka and coke.

If you drink enough you will forget about beer. :)

  7. Pattaya will always attract an influx of visitors and should pick up from this point onward. Interestingly, places like Soi Buakow may actually get busier as many travelers will simply downscale to better value instead of canceling the trip however very few travelers will spend more and upscale so one can understand why the high end market is down.

  8. Not to hard to figure out. The economy is depressed and the ruling elite are feeling the heat so its time for diversionary tactics. Don't worry the ruling Chinese class will always keep just enough foreigners around for situations like these. I've said all along everything from amended Visa policies to rice land would be used to confuse the Thais into thinking the economic problems and disparity are the result of foreigners and not the ruling elite.

Get ready for more they've likely just begun.

  9. So in the case of female/male social dynamics in the USA, I argue that there is relatively level playing field, it is just that the females are "winning" and have the upper-hand.

Hmmm. I'm a big feminist myself and applaud the advances in rights for women in the USA. They should go further: for example, why can't women all go topless on the beaches or anywhere else that a man can normally go topless?

On the other hand, I see most of my old male buddies, married to typical 'Mercan women, doing ALL the maintenance and yard work around the house AND at least 50% of the housework--if not more--while also meeting the lion's share of the household finances and listening to countless expressions of opinion. If they have children, the men do quite a lot of support there, too, and change just as many diapers. I'd say the women are certainly dominant in those relationships.

That said, my buds do claim they are happily married. They wouldn't lie to me. :D So there you are.

You do make some good points but I wouldn't assume so many are happy as much as they may be "trapped". I have a friend who does offshore work and many of his coworkers went to Thailand and were soon divorced to their western wives. Now many of these relationships ended badly but they did leave their previous marriage so something was missing.

Is that you in the pic? :)

  10. I don't think one can generalize. I've seen a lot of obnoxious people from all countries. However one criticism that can be leveled against Americans is that they are very inward looking. I remember growing up in Canada and our lead news stories would be either national or international. In the U.S. the breaking news was little league baseball. So this does lead to a certain degree of ignorance. However, there are many formally and self educated Americans but I find there seems to be a disparity in the education system. There is a top tier that is virtually unsurpassed than there are all the rest with substandard education (a lot like health care in the U.S). And in the U.S. this appears to be getting progressively worse as the middle class is shrinking and further disparity in income is creating two classes: rulers and serfs. Plus add in an influx of immigrants that don't really want to integrate. Many European countries are more balanced.

On a side note I have found the real Americans to be very generous and friendly people. The problem is all the immoral and greedy people that are allowed to take advantage of them.

I have pretty much had enough with my American experience and will soon be relocating to Thailand or back to Canada. Maybe see you in Bangers, Patts or Phuket for a brewski eh?

  11. Also Thai(s) in general don't like giving someone bad news, so they avoid it. So I wouldnt be surprised if you never hear from her again!

Yeah that's one good quality about thai's. Instead of ending a relationship as friends or tell a reason, lets get our boyfriends worried sick first! I almost travelled back to thailand as i thought something has happened to her. What did she expect? That i would automaticly know that the girl who said "i love you" on the phone 1 week ago suddenly decides "Well this is it! We are finished!" :)

I cannot do anything but laugh about this situation, it is so weird for me. Gonna ask for reason and why this cannot end like friends. And if it is something i did. So if she has any empathy for me she will answer. If she is the she-devil from hel_l who likes to slay farang then she wont answer.

She is 28 years old, a mature woman. Why the heck she break up a relationship like she is 14 years old? I think i will never understand thai women. They are like a own specie. You can write thousands of articles on them and still not understand them. My problem now is how the heck am i gonna date a farang woman ? :D No woman can match a thai woman.

"Me wash your clothes ok? You sleep! You can sleep alone 5 minutes? You not die ok?"

"You want sex? Ok i give you sex now!"

So many hilarious situations, i have laughed my ass off so many times falling down on the floor and struggling to breath. They say so many funny things. Its so cute ...

Nice to see you are not too tainted. Take it for what it is worth. You may simply want to pay for play from this point. I'd try and find a Thai woman that is not actively seeking a falang and take it from there.

  12. Why can't these good Thai actors get on the Thai soaps? You have been conned 100 percent. What I can't understand is that when she became angry and you left for the hotel why did you not stop the transfer?

Looks like she made up with you just in time to get the transfer through.

There are plenty of women in T'land and if they ask for money in such a way move on. Don't get too involved and keep in the back of your mind that you may be dealing with a grifter but let her prove otherwise.

  13. They must have a sense of humour, guess who the country next to them is? If the actions of that government and their people dont make you laugh nothing will lol

BTW this post is in jest. I do not want to be hunted down and have my emails and phones tapped- again!

BTW the neighbor to the south has gotten all their good comedians from us anyway:

    Dan Aykroyd

    John Candy

    Jim Carrey

    Phil Hartman

    Ron James

    Eugene Levy

    Rich Little

    Howie Mandel

    Mike Myers

    Leslie Nielson

    Martin Short.......etc, etc

I'd take a few of those out if you are using the word "good".

  14. She is not a BG, but works in the tourism industry (and I know that for a fact since she has a licence. I cannot know if she was a BG before. She has never told me! Joking! Let's be honest! No man alive can know for sure what was the dark-side of a woman IF she does not want you to know! She might tell you, but will you know for sure it is not another story! :) In her line of work, she sometimes frequents BGs.

She does not come from Isaan, but she is a farmer's daughter. She is 30. I am 47.

I am splitting the B 4000 rent as she used to pay 2000 B for 12 m2 apartment and I would have to pay minimum about B 4000 myself. So this seemed a win-win situation for both of us. I usually pay for food and give her sometimes other gifts when people do.

I am in the process of buying a car, but she wants me to put it on her name and, when I tell her, I want to put it in on my name, she does not want the car anymore. This makes me VERY suspicious, especially considering she does not have a downpayment. She asks me to trust her, but then when I ask her to trust me to put the name of the car on my name (so that she can theoretically be absolved of all the financial responsibilities and allow her to save some to have a downpayment for land/house and such, which is a good compromise since foreigners cannot own land anyway), she is not interested, saying that she is not able to save money! :D

Slap yourself twice and give your head a serious shake. Then vote with your feet. 30k is one thing but putting the car in her name spells setup. When will the falang learn? Its no wonder many girls think they have won the lottery.

  15. I booked a flight to BKK yesterday through the china airlines website whilst yapping away to my mate on the phone.

as I was reviewing the finalised booking I realised the mother of all schoolboy errors - I had entered my forename and surname the wrong way round on the booking. :)

now I was already aware airlines - in the main - do not allow name changes and as I scrutinised the ticket rules my fear was confirmed - no name changes allowed.

so I had to wait 'til today to call (monday) as the UK call centre is closed at weekends. I was convinced they were going to say I had to cancel the ticket at a charge of 150GBP and rebook. I had a white lie prepared to make out I had entered the details 100% correctly and there must be a mistake on their website (pathetic :D ).

Never had any problems with China Airlines. Allowed no penalty return flight changes. Helpful and courteous. Good value.

anyway, I phone up as soon as the call centre is open at 9am and the operator says its not a problem - apparently other airlines can get arsey about it but china airlines accept the booking if all names are present and spelt correctly.

so thumbs up to CI for customer service................and I recommend full concentration when booking flights online ie no phone calls to mates whilst punching a few hundred squid onto the plastic.

    game

    :D

  16. CANBERRA (Reuters Life!) - A former sex slave on Monday launched a global campaign against trafficking, saying the age of girls forced into prostitution keeps getting younger.

Cambodian Somaly Mam, whose eponymous foundation is dedicated to fighting the $12 billion a year sex-trafficking industry, said a four-year-old girl was found last month at a brothel in Cambodia after being reported by a male client.

The youngster had been sold to the brothel by her mother, who is also a prostitute.

She is now being cared for at one of the seven shelters run by the Somaly Mam Foundation in Cambodia, Laos and Vietnam set up to protect and rehabilitate girls rescued from sex slavery. The group also has an office in Thailand dealing with repatriation.

"You just have to hold her and stay with her and show her that you love her. Children can become children again," Mam told Reuters as she launched a joint venture with cosmetics retailer The Body Shop to raise awareness of sex trafficking.

"There is this belief that having sex with a virgin will cure you of HIV so there is an increasing market for younger and younger girls. In my time it was girls aged 15 or 16 but it has got younger and younger."

The United Nations estimates that two million women and children are trafficked every year, with 30 percent of these in Asia. Poor families sometimes sell a daughter to pay off debts.

    PERSONAL TRAGEDY

Mam personally knows the horror of a life of slavery having been sold to a brothel at the age of 16 by an abusive elderly man whom she called "grandfather." She was sold to pay off his debts.

She managed to escape the brothel with the help of a Swiss patron who paid off the owner and has since campaigned tirelessly against forced prostitution, setting up the Somaly Mam Foundation in 2007 to rescue and rehabilitate girls.

She was recently named one of Time Magazine's "100 Most Influential People."

Mam, who wrote about her journey from sex slave to crusader against prostitution in her memoir "The Road of Lost Innocence," has faced threats from pimps and organized crime syndicates over the years while her shelters have come under armed attack.

In 2006, Mam's teenage daughter was kidnapped. She was eventually rescued, but Mam still refuses to leave her work.

"All my family is safe now. We have bodyguards for my children," said Mam who refuses to give details about where her family lives.

She said global awareness about sexual slavery was extremely low and she hoped that joining forces with The Body Shop in a campaign spanning 60 nations would raise the issue's profile.

She also hoped this would lead to an increase in funds available to set up shelters were former sex workers could be trained in other industries such as sewing, weaving and even micro-finance so that they could set up their own businesses.

Over the next three years The Body Shop will campaign for governments to implement strict anti-trafficking policies and legislation, and to dedicate more resources to this cause.

"I need everyone to help our work, to open everyone's eyes to what is going on with trafficking children and what is going on in Cambodia, Asia and around the world," said Mam.

"It is not easy to get funding ... and the more people get involved the more we can stop trafficking."

Absolutely disgusting. Life in prison for anyone selling someone into prostitution. Life in prison for anyone in possession of a minor involved in prostitution. Life in prison for anyone engaging in sexual acts with a child. Reward for anyone reporting the situation. Game over.

  17. This sounds like a lot of pumping to try and get people to spend. If you look at it there is actually a depression in the U.S. but there no longer really exists a term for depression as the term recession replaced it.

Check out www.patrick.net a lot of good information if often a bit negative. However, I wouldn't rely on the mainstream media to get the truth.

This may be a bottom but it is a long way back to the top we once had.

Also if you are relying on Greenspan than you are in deep trouble. Greenspan created this mess than denied any wrongdoing. The guy is basically an egotistical ignoramus.

Hope I'm wrong but I doubt it. :)

  18. It was mentioned on another thread the problem of Thai women being bra obsessive.

Few men who come to Thailand for any length of time are not in one way or another exposed to a Thai breast. Few also fail to be impressed with the symmetry and perfection of the above mentioned body part. Why then, with their obvious assets should Thai women choose to layer their chests in padding, foam and all sorts of artificial disenhancements?

There is a villain in the story and his name is Colonel Luang Phibun Songgram. He was in power initially during the 1930's before and during WW II.

Phibun was responsible for the Victory Monument, in that he started the war against the French which got 44 or so Thai's killed and prompted the building of the monument. Of course it didn't take long to beat the French because the Thai's had Ford model T truck engines in their tanks among other things.

Phibun also arranged the alliance with the Japanese which led Thailand to declare war against the UK and the United States. Thailand wanted the poppy growing regions in Burma because back in the good old days Bangkok had more opium dens per capita than almost anywhere in the world and the Japanese supported the Thai aggression against Burma. In Burma, opium production increased from 8 tons in 1936 to an approximate 36 tons in 1942 under Thai rule.

Thailand came out of WW II almost unscathed with only a few hundred civilians killed compared to the hundreds of thousands dead everywhere else both among their allies (the Germans, Japanese and so on) and their enemies (US, UK, Burma, Vietnam, China, and almost everyone else).

But Thailand did not emerge from this period undamaged and the bra was one of the consequences of this era.

Phibun was a social manipulator. He was unhappy with the relatively idyllic stat of Thai womanhood.

Thai women before WW II were topless. Men wore skirts. Everyone ate five times a day. Opium was legal. Men didn't have to kiss their wives. People ate with their hands.

Phibun didn't like it. He mandated that women wear shirts and bras and that men wear pants. He insisted men kiss their wives goodbye in the morning (on the lips!). He ruled that Thai people should eat with spoons and forks and only three times a day.

Phibun was arrested for war crimes but returned to power shortly thereafter.

    very interesting

  19. Seems somewhat believable until the guy is rifling through his wallet with no objections. And if he was this drugged I don't think he'd be able to walk around a mall without attracting some attention. I think he should have added "they put me in a wheelchair and took me to the mall" to make things more believable.

  20. Fortune Landed On Paradise Island

Samui Island in Gulf of Thailand has prospected in the past. However past year has been exceptionally misfortunate. Despite lowered hotel rates and special promotions and discounts tourism is

Bo Put expected to fall 30 plus percent % from last year. Political unrest, economical collapse and swain flu are main reasons for this downward spiral.

Many luxury hotels and boutique villas, including that of David Beckham, have risen to this paradise island in fast pace but now shops, bar, hotels, restaurants and other businesses and holding breath and keeping thumbs up that end of the year will get better.

La Fortune junk was unlucky when winds suddenly picked up. Scale forced winds came from nowhere. In order to save the dock being pulled off, junk took off and tried to head in to deeper waters. Instead engines failed to help out enough and it was close to run into smaller speedboats and even hit a bar on the beach on its battle to stay off shore.

Eventually it landed heavy on sand with five speedboats along the Bangrak beach. Junk did get a minor damages but nothing crew couldn't handle. After four days of digging and fixing La Fortune was waiting tide to set sails back in to its regular business.

Maybe "La Fortune'" landing on Samui's will bring fortunes for its people too. At least one of the crew members saw it jokingly that way.

La Fortune is owned by two French men. It makes charters on Samui – Koh Phagnan watershttp://www.citizenside.com/en/photos/boat-accidents-sinking/2009-07-27/18379/fortune-landed-on-paradise-island.html

this looks like a holiday report from a 5 year old ??? .....

    I'd say eleventeen.
